Translational Dynamics in Urban Space: Exploring Battala’s Multilingual Cultural Encounter
“Battala” is a Bengali metonym for commercial print culture which gained popularity during the Bengal Renaissance. This print culture became a translational palimpsest, disseminating literary genres and leading to the creation of a site where high and low culture converged. Our paper examines the complex relationship between 19th-century colonial Calcutta and the languages in this fast-developing city. The popular print culture blurred distinctions between cultural forms, transcending geographical and literary boundaries of the colonial cosmopolis. This paper contributes to the discourse on translating otherness in the city by demonstrating how Battala intricately reflected relationships between language, memory, and urban space within the historical and cultural context of colonial Calcutta. This is done through an analysis of selected works, including Koutuk Shatak by Harishchandra Mitra, Rar Bhar Mithya Katha Tin Loye Kolikata by Pyarimohan Sen, and Ki Mojar Koler Gari by Munsi Azimuddin. Other works that highlight the blurring of cultural spaces include the translation of The Arabian Nights by Avinash Chandra Mitra (titled Sachitra Ekadhik Sahasra Dibas). Additionally, translations of Ameer Hamzar Puthi by Abdun Nabi and Shah Muhammad Saghir’s Yūsuf Zuleikhā show significant Urdu and Arabic-Persian influence.By analyzing Battala’s interactions with marketplaces, different communities, and intellectual salons, this study adds to the interdisciplinary discussion on translation and urban space. It examines the city’s symbolic representations in popular literature, as well as its geographic location and social significance
Speech Development of Premature Infants with Periventricular Haemorrhage (PVH/IVH)
Intracranial haemorrhages in neonates can be classified as perinatal complications. Among children born prematurely, periventricular haemorrhages (PVH/IVH) of varying severity (grade I to IV) are the most common. These bleedings represent a risk factor for neurodevelopmental disorders. This article presents the results of an analysis of the speech development of 37 preterm children with periventricular haemorrhages.Krwawienia śródczaszkowe u noworodków zaliczyć można do powikłań okołoporodowych. Wśród dzieci urodzonych przedwcześnie najczęściej występują krwawienia okołodokomorowe (PVH/IVH) o różnym nasileniu (od I do IV stopnia). Stanowią one czynnik ryzyka wystąpienia zaburzeń neurorozwojowych. W artykule przedstawiono wyniki analizy rozwoju mowy 37 dzieci wcześniaczych z krwawieniami okołodokomorowymi
Multisensory Ethnography in Practice: Sensory Experience Diaries as a Research Tool
The article examines sensory experience diaries as a research method rooted in multisensory ethnography and the paradigm of embodied cognition. The author discusses the theoretical foundations of this approach and its relevance to urban research, as well as analyzes five diaries kept in Warsaw between 2012 and 2014. The study shows how diary writing fosters deep self-reflection among the participants, revealing the interplay of body, space, and social context in shaping perception. While the empirical material is over a decade old, the conclusions remain relevant, demonstrating the method’s potential for contemporary qualitative research on urban everyday life.
Artykuł przedstawia sylwetki polskich laureatów literackiej Nagrody Nobla, przybliża okoliczności przyznania nagrody i towarzyszące im kontrowersje. The article presents the profiles of Polish laureates of the Nobel Prize in Literature, outlining the circumstances surrounding the awards and the controversies that accompanied them. The text focuses on their Nobel speeches, highlighting the most important themes addressed by the laureates. Henryk Sienkiewicz, honored in 1905, believed that the award demonstrated that Poland, despite being partitioned by foreign powers, was still alive. Władysław Stanisław Reymont, awarded in 1924, did not receive the prize in person due to poor health; he was embittered that he won the laurel at a time when illness prevented him from fully enjoying it. He interpreted it as a bitter irony of fate. Czesław Miłosz (laureate of 1980) sought to show the entanglement of Polish literature in history and its dependence on writers of earlier eras. The poet was not pleased with the “commotion” surrounding him caused by receiving the Nobel Prize. In 1996, the prize was awarded to Wisława Szymborska, who, in her Nobel lecture, spoke among other things about what it means to be a poet and about the wonder contained in the simple phrase “I don’t know.” Olga Tokarczuk, awarded in 2018, focused, among other issues, on explaining the idea of the “tender narrator” and reflecting on contemporary ways of reading. The second part of the text discusses the reception of the works of Polish Nobel laureates in Italy, pointing to the great popularity of Henryk Sienkiewicz and Wisława Szymborska
Edukacyjne aspekty poradoznawstwa
Counsellogy is a young subdiscipline of the social sciences and humanities. It is dedicated to the study of counseling and guidance. The paper argues that this scholarly field stands in a twofold relation to education. The very object of research is one of these links. The other is provided by the interdisciplinarity of knowledge, which is produced, accumulated and generalized by various humanities scholars, as well as researchers from other disciplines. Crucially, both the use of counseling interventions and engagement in shared interdisciplinary scholarship-generating research on counseling are intrinsically educational.
This article aims to identify the differences in customer loyalty among generational groups in the context of electronic banking. The study is based on a survey that was conducted among 321 Polish respondents. Using correspondence analysis and chi-square tests, we confirmed statistically significant generational differences in loyalty; Generation Z showed the lowest loyalty levels, while Baby Boomers displayed the highest.By applying correspondence analysis – a rarely used method in this context – we revealed distinct loyalty patterns that were linked to generational traits. The findings suggest that banks should adopt age-differentiated loyalty strategies. For younger customers (particularly Millennials and Generation Z), personalised digital experiences, alignments with brand values, and emotional engagement may be key to improving their loyalty. In contrast, emphasising service reliability, long-term trust, and security is likely to be more effective for older generations such as Generation X and Baby Boomers. This study enhances both a theoretical understanding and practical strategies for customer retention in e-banking.
Predicting Facial Anthropometry: A Novel Guide for Facial Reconstruction Using a Nigerian Igbo Sample
The present study was conducted to generate facial anthropometry baseline data for adult males and females of Igbo ethnicity in south-eastern Nigeria and to develop facial anthropometric prediction and correlation models. This cross-sectional, descriptive study design involved using 200 males and 200 females. The study criteria included subjects with no history of facial surgery and were within the age interval of 18–35 years. With the aid of spreading and digital caliper, different percutaneous facial measurements were obtained and data collected were analyzed both descriptively and inferentially. There were statistically significant sex differences in all metrics. Mandibular width (MW) correlated with both forehead width (FHW), lower facial height (LFH) and nasal width (NW) for both sexes. Total facial height (TFH) correlated with NW, upper facial height (UFH), mid-facial height (MFH), and lower facial height (LFH), while NW correlated with MW, UFH, MFH, and LFH. Predictive models developed using univariate regression analysis for both sexes showed that MW was a strong predictor of FHW, while UFH, MFH, and LFH were individually strong predictors of TFH (p<0.05). Further, MFH and LFH were significant predictors of FH for both sexes. By using multivariate regression analysis, it was revealed that the combination of both FW and FHW were strong predictors of MW, while the combination of UFH, MFH, and LFH were significant predictors of TFH. Conclusively, these new data should aid forensic and surgical efforts in Nigerian contexts. Our models can be tested on other underrepresented populations to better understand current methods in facial anthropometry
This study explores the hermeneutics of the oneiric phonosphere in three short stories— Reginetta (1846), La coltrice nuziale (1850), and La fila (1854)—by the Friulian writer Caterina Percoto (1812–1887), known as the “peasant countess” (Valussi, 1889, p. 10). Drawing on Schafer’s (1977) theory of soundscapes—which encompasses both the spatial dimension and its distinctive sonic texture, including geophonies and biophonies, as well as the anthropological sphere, namely anthrophonies (Krause, 2012) —this analysis extends to the dream world, conceived as both a “reflection” and an “inversion” of reality. Within this framework, key elements of Percoto’s work emerge: the depiction of the Friulian rural landscape, a central motif in her poetics, and her strong socio-political engagement. Percoto’s dreamlike soundscape is shaped primarily by the sounds of nature; yet, human presence is never entirely absent. The auditory dimension of dreams serves to enrich and redefine a specific historical moment, where the often harsh sounds of the countryside accentuate the struggles of daily life. Oneiric anthrophonies play a dual role, conveying both individual and collective moral tensions while reflecting the suffering of the common people and the turmoil of combatants. In this interplay between biographical elements and ideological aspirations, silence itself becomes a powerful presence, heightening the profound and unsettling nature of human suffering.
