Difficulties in Translating Xenophon’s Fictional Correspondence into Polish — an Analysis of Selected Issues

    No full text
The fictional correspondence of Xenophon has survived to our times in a fragmentary form, thanks to Stobaeus, whose Anthology contains excerpts from the Socratic letters. This correspondence is also part of the collection Socratis et Socraticorum Epistolae. Translating these texts poses significant challenges due to the peculiarities of the epistolary language, particularly its Atticization, as well as the presence of allusions and quotations that reflect the authors’ intellectual processes. The translator’s task, therefore, is to unveil the implicit knowledge embedded in the original text for the reader. This raises the question of what translation techniques should be employed to achieve this. Is a footnote always the only solution? How can one create a comprehensible and faithful translation for the modern reader of texts rooted in the Second Sophistic movement, which reference the realities of the classical era and Socratic thought – texts marked by a third culture? The article pays special attention to the Greek particle δέ, seen as a characteristic element of Attic speech, particularly in Xenophon’s language, as well as the dualis form.

A quarter of a century after Susan Bordo. Ways of presenting masculinity and male bodily practices in selected Polish lifestyle magazines for men between 1990 and 2020

    No full text
The article discusses the representation of masculinity and male bodily practices in Polish lifestyle magazines for men in the thirty-year post-transition period (1990–2020). The analysis is based on empirical material from the project „Cultural practices related to the body in everyday life of four generations of Polish men. A sociological analysis” (NCN). It is aimed, among other things, at verifying the observation made by Susan Bordo, according to whom the male image is invariably accompanied by a context of power, money, the requirement to be physically strong, and a broadly understood ability to subdue and use violence. The process of qualitative content analysis encompassed 31 men’s magazine titles. It focused on three analytical categories: the types of masculinities promoted in the magazines, the representations of the male body, and the narratives surrounding the body, particularly about grooming, health, aesthetics, and identity practices. The analyses showed that post-1989 men’s lifestyle magazines played an important role in shaping patterns of masculinity, offering models of identity based on body aesthetics and success but rooted in traditional, hegemonic norms. In them, modern bodily practices were redefined as ‘masculine’ through rhetorics of strength, pain, and domination, allowing them to be integrated without violating the conservative gender order. Despite their apparent openness to new forms of masculinity, the magazines reproduce oppressive patterns by subordinating the male body to a consumerist logic, allowing us to conclude that Bordo’s observations remain valid.

A Commentary on the Development of the Neo-Latin Vocabulary with Reference to Recent Linguistic Studies

    No full text
The practical use of Latin is uncommon in the 21st century. Since the collapse of the Roman Empire, it has been considered a ‘dead language’. The main reason for this is that there is no nation for which Latin is a mother tongue. However, there are still people who can speak Latin fluently in everyday communication. Thus, we can ask ourselves where this idea originated and how it is possible to speak an ancient language in modern times. The aim of this paper is to briefly describe the history of Latin’s development, focusing on the coining of vocabulary related to breakthrough discoveries after the collapse of the Roman Empire. This should lead to answering the question of whether the continuous interest in Latin and its growth throughout the centuries was a natural evolution of the language or rather an artificial attempt to keep it alive. Furthermore, it is also worth considering whether it is appropriate to refer to Latin as a ‘dead language’ in every sense of the word. To support the thesis of Latin’s continuous growth, several lexical examples with word-formation analysis will be provided, demonstrating that the analogical processes observed within Latin also appear in modern languages

Zdezorientowana osoba ucząca się. Poszukiwanie informacji dotyczących zdrowia w internecie przez pacjentki z rakiem piersi

The aim of this study was to reconstruct online health information seeking behaviors during oncological treatment. The qualitative research, in the interpretive paradigm, was conducted in Poland and Croatia. Purposive sampling was used. The participants were breast cancer patients after the oncological diagnosis obtained no more than 5 years before the study. A total of 24 participants aged 34 to 76 were enrolled in the study. In-depth interviews were conducted. Reflexive thematic analysis was used. Five strategies of involvement or non-involvement in online information-seeking required by health crisis used by research participants were identified: overly active/obsessive online information-seeking, active online information-seeking, withdrawing from online information-seeking, avoidance, non-involvement. The strategies are also ways of coping with illness and learning during a health crisis. They are associated with many burdens. That is why some cancer patients become confused learners.Celem badania było zrekonstruowanie strategii poszukiwania w internecie informacji dotyczących zdrowia podczas udziału w leczeniu onkologicznym. Badania jakościowe, w paradygmacie interpretatywnym, zostały przeprowadzone w Polsce i Chorwacji.

Urban transport system changes during and after COVID-19: Łódź and Bratislava (dataset)

The repository contains processed and harmonized datasets supporting the empirical analyses reported in the article “Are the changes in the functioning of urban transport systems arising from the COVID-19 pandemic just temporary change or a permanent transformation? Examples of Lodz and Bratislava” published in Moravian Geographical Reports. The deposited materials are prepared as analysis-ready tables that enable replication of the main comparisons and indicators presented in the paper, while respecting third-party constraints on redistributing operational records. The package includes a core spreadsheet (XLSX) with day-level public transport service-supply indicators, organised by date and day type (weekday/Saturday/Sunday). Variables describe both the structure and intensity of service provision, including the number of bus and tram lines, the daily number of vehicle journeys, and analogous counts for selected time windows reflecting peak and inter-peak periods (e.g., morning peak, midday, afternoon peak). A complementary ZIP archive provides aggregated Excel tables (XLS) summarising ticket validations (“skasowania”) in non-identifying form, offered in three analytical perspectives—by hour band, by line, and by stop—with totals reported in a way that supports reconstruction of temporal profiles and structural shifts without exposing individual transactions. In addition, a macro-enabled workbook (XLSM) supports the harmonised workflow by structuring hourly aggregations and calendar attributes (e.g., date, hour, day-of-week labels and trading/non-trading indicators) and by providing descriptive statistics used to compute the comparative metrics applied in the study. Because the source information originates from operational systems managed by external institutions, the repository releases only aggregated, replication-focused outputs, while raw records remain with the data owners. Access to files has been restricted, but metadata remains open under the Creative Commons Zero license. The package is designed to support reproducibility of the paper’s empirical steps, while avoiding disclosure of raw operational records. The deposited files provide analysis-ready tables derived primarily from urban public transport operations in Łódź, prepared consistently for the study timeframe and analytical phases considered in the paper. A core spreadsheet dataset (XLSX) contains day-level service-supply indicators, with observations indexed by date and day-type (weekday/Saturday/Sunday). Key variables describe the structure and intensity of service provision, including the number of bus and tram lines, the daily number of public-transport vehicle journeys, and comparable counts for selected time windows reflecting peak and inter-peak periods (e.g., morning peak, midday, afternoon peak). Due to third-party data-sharing conditions, only aggregated, non-identifying, replication-focused outputs are released; the raw monitoring and transactional records remain with the source institutions. The datasets deposited in the repository were prepared in connection with the implementation of projects co-financed by the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA) under the 2% subsidy mechanism for higher-education institutions participating in the IDUB (‘Excellence Initiative – Research University’) programme, and by the National Science Centre, Poland (grant no. 2023/49/B/HS4/01406)

Międzypokoleniowe praktyki troski. Perspektywa synów na relacje troski z ojcami

    No full text
This article aims to present and discuss the author’s research, individual in-depth interviews conducted with 10 young college-aged men on the understanding and practice of caring in their relationships with their fathers. The article refers to the notion of caring (Kitwood 1997, Philips 2007), theories of masculinity (Connell 1995, Anderson 2009, Elliott 2016) and fatherhood (Kluczyńska 2009, Suwada 2015, 2017) and describes the relationship between these concepts. Based on the literature review and research findings, the author attempts to problematise the forms of caring between sons and fathers, the reasons that shape this caring, and to capture what a son can learn about caring from his father and how this knowledge is commented on and used in a practical sense.

    No full text
The main goal of the considerations presented in the article was analysis the causes and effects of social exclusion according to the opinions of customers of cooperative banks.Survey research according to the interview questionnaire was conducted in 2023 on an sample of 1502 customers of cooperative banks. The research sample was of a quota-targeted nature. The quantitative survey of cooperative bank customers was carried out according to the Mixed Mode Design procedure.Research results indicate that income, socio-professional status and age mainly cause social exclusion. However, according to the respondents, poverty, unemployment and disability mainly contribute to social exclusion. In turn, the effect of social exclusion, according to respondents, is the development of pathological social phenomena, fewer opportunities and a worse economic situation, and the loss of competences enabling a return to the labor market.Social exclusion is phenomenon that has many causes. The novelty of the study is the fact that it was conducted on a sample of customers of cooperative banks, because this group often declares low net income and is socially, financially and digitally excluded.Głównym celem rozważań zaprezentowanych w artykule jest analiza przyczyn i skutków wykluczenia społecznego według opinii klientów banków spółdzielczych.

Monopol emisyjny Narodowego Banku Polskiego w przepisach konstytucyjnych i ustawowych

    No full text
Wzorce konstytucyjnego monopolu emisyjnego Narodowego Banku Polskiego zauważalne są w polskim ustawodawstwie z lat 1918–1939. Dotyczą one statusu prawnego i zadań Polskiej Krajowej Kasy Pożyczkowej, a następnie Banku Polskiego SA. Monopol emisyjny NBP wyrażono w Konstytucji RP szerzej, gdyż dotyczy on „pieniądza” (gotówkowego i bezgotówkowego), natomiast w ustawie o NBP został ograniczony tylko do „znaków pieniężnych” (pieniądza gotówkowego).
