    Thermal lens spectrometric detection of ▫Mn2+Mn^{2+}▫ in aqueous solutions

    Manganese (Mn2+) is an essential trace element required for normal body functions, but high levels can be toxic to organs as it can damage liver and heart or introduce disorders to fetus and cause disfuntionality of reproductive system [1]. Thus, it is of high importance to monitor its amounts in the environment. In the work the thermal lens spectrometry (TLS) was applied to detect the trace amounts of Mn2+ in water [2]. The detection is based on the adsorption of Mn²⁺ ions onto the surface of silver nanoparticles (Ag0 NPs), which were synthesized by the reduction of Ag⁺ ions to Ag0 using BH4- as a reducing agent and a stabilizer. Manganese solutions with concentrations ranging from 0.5 µM to 10 µM were prepared. The calibration curve showed good linearity over the examined concentration range (Fig. 1). The obtained limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) were 20 and 68 nM, respectively and confirmed high sensitivity of the method. Furthermore, the method shows both good repeatability and reproducibility, as well as high precision and accurcy with RSD not exceeding 3%. The maximum contamination level (MCL) of Mn2+ in water is 0.91 µM (0.05 mg/L), wich indicates values higher than LOD [3]. The results indicate that the proposed TLS-based method is a simple and reliable technique for determination of metal ions in water

    Acquisition of English speech rhythm by monolingual children

    We investigated how English rhythmic patterns develop in the course of first language acquisition by children between four and twelve years. We have empirically confirmed that rhythm becomes increasingly more stress-timed as acquisition progresses, which is revealed by higher durational variability of syllables, vocalic sequences and consonantal clusters in speech delivered by older children compared to younger children. The development of speech rhythm was studied using the same speech material produced by children at various ages, while controlling for the differences in phonotactics and syllable structure. The tendency to deliver speech with higher durational variability at later stages of language acquisition emerges even when the phonological differences in speech material — inevitable in uncontrolled speech delivered by children of different ages — are controlled for. This finding indicates that the language-specific phonetic timing patterns are established as a function of age, probably as a result of the motor control development

    Towards a foundation model for astrophysical source detection

    The increasing volume of gamma-ray data demands new analysis approaches that can handle large-scale datasets while providing robustness for source detection. We present a Deep Learning (DL) based pipeline for detection, localization, and characterization of gamma-ray sources. We extend our AutoSourceID (ASID) method, initially tested with Fermi-LAT simulated data and optical data (MeerLICHT), to Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO) simulated data. This end-to-end pipeline demonstrates a versatile framework for future application to other surveys and potentially serves as a building block for a foundational model for astrophysical source detection
