“Men who love the oak trees”: services and care in the cork oak forests of Southern Andalusia

    No full text
Our article is aligned with the growing interest from the sustainability science in the need to broaden our view of the connections between humans and nature for better understanding them that helps to improve environmental governance systems. Our work aims to provide evidence that helps to overcome the dualistic and utilitarian prejudices that the ecosystem services framework presents on this issue, hindering its potential, both theoretically and practically. To this end, it is essential to incorporate the affective dimension that often permeates this relationship and turns it into care. Moreover, we do this in a social-ecological context such as that of the European Mediterranean, which is different from that of the non-western indigenous populations, of which we have examples that demonstrate the proactive role that people have played and continue to play in the construction and conservation of valuable ecosystems. We take as a case study the activities carried out by the people who work in the cork oak forests of southern Andalusia for their maintenance and for the extraction of cork. Drawing on the knowledge gained from a long period of mainly ethnographic re-search, we advocate incorporating the care practices, knowledge, and feelings that permeate the relationships that these workers have with the trees and the forest into the governance spaces of these landscapes as fundamental elements to achieve the sustainable management of cork oak forests. This is particularly relevant in a context marked by the decline in the socio-environmental conditions of these agroforestry social-ecological systems due to ageing of the trees and the diseases affecting them as a result of changes in use and management, aggravated by climate change.

Over three decades of archaeological research in the Sierras of San Francisco and Guadalupe, Baja California Sur, Mexico, have shed significant light on the social processes and cultural adaptations of the hunter-gatherer-fisher groups that once thrived in this region. These groups traveled between the Gulf of California, the mountains, and the Pacific Ocean in search of food, raw materials, and water. The availability of fresh water for extended periods allowed for longer stays in ideal settlements, fostering periodic gatherings of specific lineages for trading goods, socializing, and performing group rituals. Based on ethnohistorical, ethnographic, archaeological, and symbolic evidence—such as rock art—certain permeable and diffuse boundaries have been identified among the substyles of the Great Mural Tradition. These symbolic transitions align to some extent with the areas where Northern and Southern Cochim ́ı dialects were spoken, suggesting distinct social identities that also correspond with specific geological, geomorphological, and climatic regions typical of these mountains.Área de Historia del Art

Tourism and Witchcraft: The Sonoran Market

    No full text
In the popular imagination, the Mercado de Sonora is one of the main centers of witchcraft in Mexico City. Although it is true that this place offers a large number of goods aimed at solving health, sentimental and even economic problems, it is also true that this space has become a multicultural place, a focus of attraction for many people who seek to satisfy their curiosity about “hidden knowledge”, and is currently conceived by many people as a tourist market. The proposed paper addresses two phenomena that occur in the capital, and perhaps in very different cities of the country: on the one hand, the “touristification of urban life”, with its chain of commodification of cultural and non-cultural goods; and on the other hand, the reproduction of knowledge, myths and traditions linked to the esoteric: a modernized magical thinking. Both phenomena shape and feed a system of beliefs that help certain social groups to confront the violence, inequality and uncertainty that are already common to all large contemporary Latin American cities.Área de Historia del Art

The western and semi-desert strip of the Sierra Gorda was, since pre-ceramic times, a region of habitation and refuge for hunter-gatherer societies. In this area, we can observe significant samples of the ancestral practice of rock art. As a result of work carried out over several years in locating, recording, and documenting rock painting and petroglyph sites, we have developed a proposal for the distribution of rock art traditions and styles. Most of the styles are contemporary and apparently well defined in the territory, so it is worth questioning why the ancient hunter-gatherer societies in the same semi-desert region expressed themselves differently through rock art.Área de Historia del Art

Employment Relationships and Firm Innovation: The Double Role of Human Capital

    No full text
We examine how employment relationships and human capital influence innovation in a sample of Spanish firms. Previous research has indicated that human capital directly affects innovation, but few studies have considered human capital as a variable that mediates or moderates the effects of other variables on innovation. We tested our hypotheses using a sample of 150 innovative Spanish firms and confirmed that, while human capital favours innovations, employment relationships are not directly associated with innovation unless they take human capital into account. Specifically, our analyses suggest that human capital mediates the relationship between a mutual investment employment relationship and innovation, which is characterized by high levels of incentives and expectations. However, we also found that human capital plays a moderating role when organizations develop an employment relationship characterized by low investments in personnel but high expectations from their work (the underinvestment model). We discuss the theoretical and practical implications of these results. © 2011 The Author(s). British Journal of Management © 2011 British Academy of Management
