UPO-138516Decision Trees (DTs) have become very popular classifiers due to their good performance and, most of all, their interpretability. In addition, the machine learning community is also paying attention to Random Forests (RFs) since they defy the interpretability-accuracy tradeoff. Most RFs strategies are based on univariate measures, a fact that may limit the capability of identifying the interaction among more than two features. In order to overcome this problem many multivariate approaches have been proposed. However, most of them are based on finding linear or non-linear combinations of features. In this work, we propose a novel univariate RF strategy that builds DTs using the Multivariate Symmetrical Uncertainty (MSU) measure as splitting criterion. The proposal, referred to as RFMSU, was tested on high-dimensional datasets and compared to state-of-the-art univariate and multivariate DTs and RFs classifiers. Results suggest that RFMSU is capable of finding simpler rules than other RFs approaches while keeping a high predictive power equivalent to that of multivariate approaches. The DT strategies considered obtained simpler models than RFMSU, but at the expense of degrading the classifier. Thus, we can conclude that RFMSU is a RF-based classifier that achieves a good trade-off between the performance and the complexity of the model.Data Science and Big Data LabUniversidad Pablo de Olavid

A sustainable career path for cancer survivors returning to work: New theorising from an inductive qualitative case study
Purpose: This study aims to understand the workplace challenges cancer survivors face when
they return to work, and to analyse what human resources management (HRM) professionals
and line managers can do to protect and motivate these survivors. This article opens with a
review of the literature on cancer survivors and work, from an HRM perspective.
Design/method/approach: A qualitative case study approach is adopted to understand the
experiences of and challenges faced by cancer survivors returning to work and human resource
(HR) managers’ actions to address these challenges.
Findings: This study enhances HRM theory on cancer survivors returning to work by proposing
a menu of suitable HRM practices. The article also highlights how acknowledging cancer
survivors’ talents and introducing an integration and learning perspective in organisations on
how to manage this vulnerable group may reinforce an employment relationship of mutual
investment aimed at sustainability. In addition, this study offers a sustainable career model for
cancer survivors.
Originality: The outcomes of this research are translated into a set of sustainable HRM
practices for cancer survivors (HR planning, job design, career development, compensation,
performance evaluation, and training), and guidance in the form of proposals for management
and government agencies to regulate the experience of returning to workDepartamento de Organización de Empresas y Marketin

A diverse geography of small-scale fishing in the face of capitalist expansion over the ocean
The advance of capitalism and its dynamic of accumulation by dispossession have placed artisanal fishing at a crossroads: whether to integrate into a development model based on growth and the intensive exploitation of marine resources. This process draws a physical and symbolic "abyssal line" that separates geographies recognized by hegemonic economic development from those that are not. The latter, such as traditional fishing, remain invisible due to their slower work pace, ecological values, and subsistence culture, which contrast with the dominant growth model. Based on the analysis of four fishing communities in Chile —Ventanas, Horcón, Loncura, and Higuerillas— this study shows that the spatiality of subsistence economies in artisanal fishing is rooted in an ecosystem integrated with artisanal practices, a distinct ecological and economic toponymy, and a broader appropriation of the coastal space that exceeds administrative boundaries. This spatiality, in addition to being heterodox and an alternative to the capitalist growth model, provides sustainability strategies that conceive livelihoods from a more holistic perspective, distancing themselves from a purely productivist vision.Universidad Pablo de Olavid
Gender analysis of the national health system in Chile: 70 years of hospital production
Gender diferences in the use of medical services have been studied since the 1980s, particularly in developed countries. A common early hypothesis suggested that women used more healthcare services than men, often attributed to cultural norms, gender roles, caregiving responsibilities, and reproductive health needs—especially during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period (PCP). However, many studies have challenged this assumption, particularly in the context of acute health conditions requiring hospitalization. Long-term analyses of hospital service use by gender remain limited, especially in non-developed regions such as
Latin America.
RESULTS
Hospital service utilization in Chile has historically been influenced by birth rates and PCP-related care. Over the past 70 years, women have consistently accounted for a higher number of hospital discharges than men. However, between 2005 and 2019, a decline in hospital care per capita was observed. Notably, the proportion of discharges among women unrelated to PCP has decreased relative to those of men. This trend raises a critical question: did the 2005 health reform in Chile shift priorities toward addressing male health issues? Further analysis is needed to explore this possibility.Departamento Economía, Métodos Cuantitativos e Historia Económic
