Leadership research is, therefore, a growing field of study that explores how leaders generate positive outcomes for their organisations. However, not all managers have a positive impact. As different studies show, in certain sectors, such as the hotel industry, so-called ‘destructive leadership’ is a common phenomenon which generates significant negative effects for organisations and their members. The aim of this paper is to examinea selection of leadership styles and to analyse some of their effects on hotel workers, in order to account for the high rates of absenteeism and turnover common in the sector nowadays and which have made it more difficult for hotel companies to attract and retain human capital. The study focuses in particular on the impact of abusive supervision and despotic leadership styles on employee motivation to continue working in the hotel industry. Primary data were collected from a sample of employees currently working in hotels with Q-mark quality certification from the Spanish Institute of Tourism Quality. The results of the study demonstrate the negative influence of these dark leadership styles on motivation to continue working in the hotel sector

Over the last decades progress has been made in the introduction of digital resources in the different educational levels, however, in the stage 3-6 years of Childhood Education its integration is not widespread. Some factors that help to understand this situation are problems in the provision and adequate selection of resources, inadequacy of specific training for teachers of this educational stage and, especially, the prevalence of conceptions that question their use in these ages, as it is understood that they limit manipulation and experimentation, which are considered as fundamental aims in this stage. This study is a qualitative research project with case study in which the perspectives and practices of uses of digital resources in a Galician infant education school are addressed, this is a school that stands out for its commitment to the integration of ICT. The results allow us to identify some of the aspects related to good practices with digital resources, namely: a collaborative approach among teachers; the active role of students in the creation of digital content; the contribution of the school library as the focal point of digital content creation; and families’ participation in the school, taking also into account the role of technologies at home

This article belongs to the Special Issue Recent Molecular Biology on Ovarian Cancer and Prostate Cancer[Abstract] Human high-mobility group-B (HMGB) proteins regulate gene expression in prostate cancer (PCa), a leading cause of oncological death in men. Their role in aggressive PCa cancers, which do not respond to hormonal treatment, was analyzed. The effects of HMGB1 and HMGB2 silencing upon the expression of genes previously related to PCa were studied in the PCa cell line PC-3 (selected as a small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma, SCNC, PCa model not responding to hormonal treatment). A total of 72% of genes analyzed, using pre-designed primer panels, were affected. HMGB1 behaved mostly as a repressor, but HMGB2 as an activator. Changes in SERPINE1, CDK1, ZWINT, and FN1 expression were validated using qRT-PCR after HMGB1 silencing or overexpression in PC-3 and LNCaP (selected as an adenocarcinoma model of PCa responding to hormonal treatment) cell lines. Similarly, the regulatory role of HMGB2 upon SERPINE1, ZWINT, FN1, IGFPB3, and TYMS expression was validated, finding differences between cell lines. The correlation between the expression of HMGB1, HMGB2, and their targets was analyzed in PCa patient samples and also in PCa subgroups, classified as neuroendocrine positive or negative, in public databases. These results allow a better understanding of the role of HMGB proteins in PCa and contribute to find specific biomarkers for aggressive PCa.This research was funded by the Plan Estatal I + D + i, Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII, Spain, grant no. [Abstract]: Background: As increasing antibiotic resistance in Acinetobacter baumannii poses a global healthcare challenge, understanding its evolution is crucial for effective control strategies. Aim: We aimed to evaluate the epidemiology, antimicrobial susceptibility and main resistance mechanisms of Acinetobacter spp. in Spain in 2020, and to explore temporal trends of A. baumannii. Methods: We collected 199 single-patient Acinetobacter spp. clinical isolates in 2020 from 18 Spanish tertiary hospitals. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) for nine antimicrobials were determined. Short-read sequencing was performed for all isolates, and targeted long-read sequencing for A. baumannii. Resistance mechanisms, phylogenetics and clonality were assessed. Findings on resistance rates and infection types were compared with data from 2000 and 2010. Results: Cefiderocol and colistin exhibited the highest activity against A. baumannii, although colistin susceptibility has significantly declined over 2 decades. A. non-baumannii strains were highly susceptible to most tested antibiotics. Of the A. baumannii isolates, 47.5% (56/118) were multidrug-resistant (MDR). Phylogeny and clonal relationship analysis of A. baumannii revealed five prevalent international clones, notably IC2 (ST2, n = 52; ST745, n = 4) and IC1 (ST1, n = 14), and some episodes of clonal dissemination. Genes blaOXA-23, blaOXA-58 and blaOXA-24/40 were identified in 49 (41.5%), eight (6.8%) and one (0.8%) A. baumannii isolates, respectively. ISAba1 was found upstream of the gene (a blaOXA-51-like) in 10 isolates. Conclusions: The emergence of OXA-23-producing ST1 and ST2, the predominant MDR lineages, shows a pivotal shift in carbapenem-resistant A. baumannii (CRAB) epidemiology in Spain. Coupled with increased colistin resistance, these changes underscore notable alterations in regional antimicrobial resistance dynamics. This work was supported by Projects PI20/01212 and PI23/00851 awarded to AB, Project PI21/00704 awarded to GB, and Project PI22/01212 awarded to JA-S, funded by the Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII) and co-funded by the European Union. Estos resultados pueden utilizarse para crear programas de mejora de lamemoria de trabajo, con el fin de ayudar al alumnado de conservatorio a maximizar su potencial yla eficacia de su aprendizaje.[Abstract] The aim of this research is to analyse the relationship between working memory andmusical training, as well as its impact on academic performance, and the influence of gender andinstrument family. The sample for the study comprised 300 students aged 10-18 years from aprofessional public conservatory in Spain. The measurement instruments used were the Wechslerscales WISC-IV and WAIS-IV, and a task (PMTM) designed specifically to assess the performanceof musical working memory. Positive and statisticallysignificantcorrelations were found betweenmusical training (measured as low, medium and high, based on years of study) and academicperformance (musical and general), and between the phonological loop of working memory andboth types of academic performance. Positivecorrelations were also observed between musicaltraining and phonological loop, and with musical working memory. Gender was not found toaffect performance. By contrast, descriptivepatterns varied systematically by instrument family, with students of bowed string instruments obtaining higher scores in musical working memory, followed by polyphonic instruments and finally wind instruments. These findings can be used tocreate programmes to enhance working memory, to help conservatory students to maximise theirpotential and the effectiveness of their learning

Methodology for obtaining the relative orbit and individual masses of Gaia astrometric binaries

    Get PDF
[Abstract]: Context. The recent Gaia Data Release 3 has revealed a catalogue of more than eight hundred thousand binary systems. The release provides orbital solutions for half of the systems, with the majority of them being unresolved astrometric binaries. However, some astrophysical parameters are still unknown for most of them, such as the spectral type and the mass of each companion, since they can only be derived from the relative orbit and spectroscopic data. Aims. The purpose of this work is to develop a methodology that would allow us to obtain those fundamental stellar parameters, along with those related to the geometry and the ephemeris of the system, to find out whether it can be optically resolved. Methods. To obtain precise values for each component, we proposed an analytic algorithm to estimate the only two possible relative orbits and pairs of masses of main sequence (MS) astrometric binaries using all the available astrometric, photometric, and spectroscopic data from Gaia DR3. In some cases, it is possible to select the solution that is more aligned with the rest of the data. Results. We deduced two possible values for the individual absolute magnitudes, masses, and effective temperatures for each binary, as well as the size of the telescope necessary to resolve their components. We present the workflow of our algorithm applied to the Ephemeris, Stellar Masses, and relative ORbits from GAia (ESMORGA) catalogue, along with the individual masses, absolute magnitudes, and effective temperatures derived for 49 530 binaries. The authors thank the referee, Andrei Tokovinin, for his valuable comments and suggestions that have served to improve the performance of the algorithm. [Abstract] The construction materials of the Santalla de Bóveda Monument, one of the most studied buildings in Galicia (Spain), are analysed to date the mortars and bricks of walls and vaults by combining three dating techniques: optically stimulated luminescence, radiocarbon and thermoluminescence. Petrological characterisation of the mortars themselves is carried out. Until now, the paintings on the vault have been interpreted as Roman, early Christian or Pre-Romanesque, depending on the interpretative framework used by the researcher who studied them. There is also no consensus on their functionality. A total of 21 samples were collected, and 39 datings were made. The results are conclusive: the original building dates from the second half of the fourth century AD, the paintings date from the beginning of the seventh century or the upper floor from the tenth to twelfth centuries. These results make it necessary to review the history of Galician architecture between Late Antiquity and the Early Medieval Ages.Open access funding provided by FCT|FCCN (b-on).

    Get PDF
Some examples of UAV uses are surveillance and security at borders, inspection of critical infrastructure (power lines, pipelines…), search for survivors, monitoring or irrigation of crops, delivery of packages and supplies in hard-to-reach areas, recording for the entertainment industry, etc. To know the state of the UAV, various sensors are used, which are subject to multiple sources of noise. This fact can lead to an estimated trajectory that differs from the actual trajectory. In all the mentioned applications, ensuring accurate and real-time tracking of the UAV’s trajectory is essential to maximize the effectiveness of the performed task and safety in operation. With this objective, this project addresses the problem of tracking the trajectory of a UAV that presents sensors subject to noise. To do this, the coordinates and altitude of a UAV are obtained during different flights by using a GPS module and a barometric altimeter. Using these data, which contain a certain level of noise, the performance of both the Kalman filter and recurrent neural networks is tested in the estimation of the UAV’s actual trajectories, also making a comparison between both approaches, so that the strengths and limitations of each technique are identified.
