The PAU Survey: The quasar Lyα and UV luminosity functions at 2.7 < z < 5.3
Get PDFWe present the Lyman-α (Lyα) and ultraviolet (UV) luminosity function (LF) in bins of redshift for quasars selected in the Physics of the Accelerating Universe Survey (PAUS). A sample of 915 objects was selected at 2.7 1044 erg s‑1. In order to obtain corrections for the LF estimation, and assess the accuracy of our selection method, we produced mock catalogs of 0 < z < 4.3 quasars and galaxies that mimic our target population and their main contaminants. Our results show a clear evolution of the Lyα and UV LFs, with a declining tendency in the number density of quasars toward increasing redshifts. In addition, the faint-end power-law slope of the Lyα LF becomes steeper with redshift, suggesting that the number density of Lyα-bright quasars declines faster than that of fainter emitters. By integrating the Lyα LF, we find that the total Lyα emitted by bright quasars per unit volume rapidly declines with increasing redshift, being subdominant to that of star-forming galaxies by several orders of magnitude by z ∼ 4. Finally, we stack the NB pseudo-spectra of a visually selected 'golden sample' of 591 quasars to obtain photometric composite SEDs in bins of redshift, enabling us to measure the mean intergalactic medium absorption using the Lyman-α forest as a function of redshift, yielding results consistent with previous spectroscopic determinations

Get PDFThe possibility of an infectious origin in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has been postulated since the first description of Crohn's disease (CD). Many observations implicate bacteria as a trigger for the development of CD: lesions occur in regions with higher bacterial concentrations; aphthous ulcers occur in Peyer's patches; inflammation resolves when the fecal stream is diverted and is reactivated following reinfusion of bowel contents; severity of the disease is correlated with bacterial density in the mucosa; granulomas can contain bacteria; and susceptible mice raised in germ-free conditions develop inflammation when bacteria are introduced in the 1990's, several studies sought to establish a relationship with viral infections and the onset of IBD, finally concluding that no direct link had been demonstrated. In the past fifteen years, evidence relating IBD pathogenesis to Mycobacterium avium paratuberculosis, salmonella, campylobacter, etc., has been found. The tendency now under discussion to regard microbiota as the primary catalyst has led to the latest studies on microbiota as pathogens, focusing on Escherichia coli, mainly in ileal CD. Pressure-driven phase transformations on Mg3Ca(CO3)4 huntite carbonate
Get PDFMagnesium and calcium carbonate minerals are significant reservoirs of Earth's carbon and understanding their behavior under different conditions is crucial for elucidating the mechanisms of deep carbon storage. Huntite, Mg3Ca(CO3)4, is one of the two stable calcium magnesium carbonate phases, together with dolomite. The distinctive cation coordination environment of Ca atoms compared to calcite-type and dolomite structures makes huntite a comparatively less dense phase. Here we examine the behavior of a polycrystalline natural huntite sample under room-temperature compression up to 38 GPa. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy experiments were carried out in a diamond-anvil cell using He as a highly hydrostatic pressure transmitting medium. XRD results suggest that the initial R32 huntite structure persists up to 21 GPa. The Raman experiment agrees with this result but also suggests the appearance of structural defects from 10 GPa on. Birch-Murnaghan equation of state parameters were fit to the pressure-volume huntite data resulting in zero-pressure volume V0 of 611.7(2) Å3, a bulk modulus B0 of 99.5(11) GPa and a pressure derivative of the bulk modulus of Image ID:d4cp04200j-t1.gif. At 21 GPa, huntite transforms to another trigonal phase (R3), designated here as huntite II. This phase persists up to at least 38 GPa, the maximum pressure reached in this study. The major structural differences between huntite and the huntite-II phase involve the tilting of the [CO3] units with respect to the basal plane and a rotation, which cause a progressive change in the coordination number of the Ca atoms, from 6 to 9. Un decálogo para el Estatuto del Trabajo del siglo XXI
No full textEl trabajo analiza cuales son los retos a los que se enfrenta el Derecho del Trabajo en los próximos años y cuales son pilares en los que deberia sustentarse una reforma integral del Estatuto de los Trabajadores. La autora va más allá de los presupuestos clásicos y, con sólidas argumentaciones, plantea la necesidad de que el nuevo Derecho del Trabajo refuerce y consolide los derechos sociales, dando respuesta a las necesidades reales a las que actualmente se enfrenta la economía y la sociedad. La normativa laboral debe estar preparada para acomodarse a los cambios constantes de las formas de producir y de entender el mundo y por eso debe estar redactada y configurada de modo que garantice siempre el trabajo digno de todas las personas lo que exige que se formule una nueva conceptualizacion de persona trabajadora, capaz de aglutinar todas las formas posibles. Deben establecerse garantias más efectivas ante los riesgos que supone la multiplicidad empresarial y deben establecerse garantias efectivas ante las crisis de empresa. La autora propone, asimismo, una formula de estabilidad en el trabajo que se acomode al art. 24 de la Carta Social Europea y un trabajo que otorgue derecho a la adaptación del trabajo no solo a las necesidades de la empresa sino tambien de las personas trabajadoras, particularmente a las personas didcapacitadas y a quienes tienen responsabilidades de cuidado. Se plantea tambien la necesidad de que la nueva normativa laboral otorgue una adecuada proteccion en materia de tiempo de trbajo (para asegurar jornadas limitadas y derechos de desconexion) y que el derecho colectivo de respuesta adecuada a las situaciones actuales.8 - Treball Decent i Creixement Econòmi
Comparison of two chemicals for removing an entocytherid (Ostracoda: Crustacea) species from its host crayfish (Cambaridae: Crustacea).
Get PDFEntocytherids are epifauna on larger crustaceans. We assessed the effectiveness of chlorobutanol and carbonated water for removing entocytherid, Ankylocythere sinuosa, from crayfish, Procambarus clarkii. This was done using different exposure times and by assessing entocytherid and crayfish survival, together with the number of entocytherids removed. According to our results, chlorobutanol submersion of crayfishes in shorter time periods is more effective for removing entocytherids without killing the crayfish host. However, carbonated water submersion is better to extract larger amounts of living entocytherids. Finally, both chemicals are appropriate tools to establish standardised protocols for removing entocytherids from crayfish for ecological studies because the proportions of removed entocytherids per crayfish become constant whatever the entocytherid load of the crayfish

En la primera parte, se aporta una breve aproximación histórica y cultural de la obra, así como también a la importancia de la indumentaria en época renacentista, y más concretamente en el entorno áulico de la corte virreinal valenciana del duque de Calabria y Germana de Foix. La segunda parte consiste en el estudio de varios ejemplos donde nos centraremos en el color de las vestimentas y su interpretación simbólica dentro de la obra.
