Effects of Simple Reminiscence on Reminiscence Functions in Older Adults with Mild Cognitive Impairment Due to Alzheimer's Disease
Objectives: Simple reminiscence has been used as a non-pharmacological strategy to improve emotional well-being and adaptation in older adults, particularly those with mild cognitive impairment due to Alzheimer's disease. This study examined the effects of a simple reminiscence-based intervention on different reminiscence functions in this population. Methods: A total of 113 participants were randomly assigned to either an experimental group (n = 61) or a control group (n = 52). The intervention consisted of 16 structured reminiscence sessions conducted over eight weeks. Reminiscence functions were assessed before and after the intervention, as well as during a follow-up. The eight subscales of the Reminiscence Functions Scale served as the study's primary outcome variables. Intervention effects were analyzed using 2 × 3 mixed ANOVAs (group × time). Results: The results showed significant improvements in adaptive reminiscence functions, including identity, problem-solving, and preparation for death, as well as in the prosocial functions of conversation and teaching/informing in the experimental group compared to the control group. Conclusions: These findings suggest that simple reminiscence can be an effective strategy for preserving and enhancing adaptive reminiscence functions in older adults with mild cognitive impairment due to Alzheimer's disease, promoting their emotional adaptation and quality of lif
Purtse Tarakallas hill fort in North-East Estonia: archaeological excavations validating the results of geophysical studies
The fieldwork conducted in 2024 at the Purtse Tarakallas hill fort extended our knowledge about the architecture of buildings in the courtyard as well as the chronology of the site and the trade connections of its inhabitants. The excavations were guided by prior geophysical surveys (GPR and magnetometry), which indicated the presence of buried structures across the courtyard. Geophysical prospection proved valuable as charred remains of a 12th-13th century wooden pit house were uncovered. The context was well-preserved due to later inf ill. The uncovered building remains were of an uncommon type in Estonian archaeology, challenging previous generalisations about architecture at Iron Age hill forts in Estonia. The discovery of postholes suggests the presence of other buildings not visible in geophysical data. A fragment of Rhenish proto-stoneware, dated to the first half of the 13th century, raises the possibility that local elites using the hill fort in the post-crusade period had started to culturally integrate with the emerging Hanseatic trade networks. The faunal remains show that the main source of meat was from the typical domesticated animals (pig, goat/sheep, cattle and chicken). This was supplemented by fishing from the nearby Purtse River and the Finnish Gulf. Archaeobotanical remains from soil samples include a seed of barley (Hordeum vulgare) and rye (Secale cereale). Radiocarbon dating and artefact finds indicate continuous use of the site from the 7th century to at least the second half of the 13th century, if not the 14th century
Revealing the Mechanisms That Contribute to Anger Expression Proneness in Patients with Brain Damage: The Importance of Executive Dysfunctions and Alexithymia
Background: The ability of scientists and clinicians to detect the therapeutic needs of patients with brain damage has increased in recent years. In this sense, many studies have signaled that individuals tend to experience an increase in irritability after suffering brain damage, with some patients even showing sudden aggressive outbursts. This increase in anger expression in these patients could be explained by executive functioning alterations (or executive dysfunctions), given their role in goal-oriented behaviors, along with emotional dysregulations such as alexithymia (e.g., difficulties recognizing and verbalizing feelings) and anger rumination (e.g., tendency to recall thoughts regarding experiences of frustration or anger). Therefore, it is essential to understand the mechanisms that contribute to and/or facilitate anger expression in patients with brain damage. Methods: In this regard, the main objective of this study is to assess whether executive dysfunctions (assessed with the Frontal Systems Behavior Scale) would explain anger expression (measured with the Reactive and Proactive Aggression Questionnaire) in patients with brain damage (n = 23; mean age: 56.61 ± 10.68; 57% men) compared to controls (n = 24; mean age: 60.96 ± 9.25; 33% men), paying special attention to potential moderators of this association such as alexithymia (analyzed with the Toronto Alexithymia Scale-20) and anger rumination (assessed with the Anger Rumination Scale). Results: The results of the current investigation led us to conclude that anger expression in patients with brain damage was partly explained by executive dysfunction, especially in those patients who scored high in alexithymia. This model was not significant among controls. Conclusions: Thus, we highlight the importance of targeting certain psychological alterations, such as alexithymia, when implementing psychotherapeutic programs as an adjuvant to cognitive training focused on cognitive deficits (e.g., executive dysfunctions). This, in turn, would support the full recovery of individuals who have experienced brain damag
Between Substance and Symbolism: How Resources and Organizational Facades Interact in Voluntary Climate Commitments
Firms increasingly disclose their climate action strategies through voluntary initiatives, yet concerns persist about the substantive impact of such disclosures. This study investigates how internal resources interact with organizational facades¿symbolic mechanisms designed to reinforce legitimacy to stakeholders¿in shaping corporate climate commitments. Using multivariate econometric regressions on a sample of 271 Colombian companies participating in the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), we assess how governance, information, systems, and technology (GISTe) resources influence reported Climate ActionCommitments (CAC) aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Our results show that governance, information, and R&D resources are most strongly associated with higher CAC and that facades exert significant direct and moderating effects, especially on governance and information. These findings contribute novel empirical evidence to the literature on symbolic corporate environmentalism. Practically, they suggest that firms in weakly regulated contexts may use stakeholder engagement not only to comply symbolically but also to enhance the perceived credibility of their environmental commitments. The study offers valuable insights for policymakers and sustainability advocates aiming to strengthen monitoring mechanisms and reduce the gap between reported and actual climate performance in developing economies
