Positive youth development, mental stress and life satisfaction in middle school and high school students in portugal: outcomes on stress, anxiety and depression

    Get PDF
Abstract: The relation between positive youth development and stress, anxiety and depression was studied considering the mediator role of psychological symptoms and life satisfaction. A total of 3109 students included in the “Psychological Health and Well-being” study of the School Observatory participated, including 1618 females and 1491 males aged between 11 and 18 years old (M = 14.45; SD = 1.88), belonging to different school groups in different regions of the country. Adolescents with higher stress, depression and anxiety levels reported lower levels of competence, confidence and connection, as well as more psychological symptoms and lower life satisfaction. The results also showed that adolescents with higher levels of competence, confidence and connection reported less psychological symptoms and more life satisfaction. Two separate mediation analyses were performed to analyse the role of mental distress and life satisfaction on the relationship between positive youth development indicators and stress, anxiety and depression. These analyses confirmed the predicted relationships and partial mediations between mental distress and life satisfaction. These results should be taken into account in public policies concerning young people’s health and education that should involve both targeted and indicated prevention strategies, including school and community-based interventions, in order to be effective.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Recruitment and selection process using artificial intelligence: How do candidates react?

    No full text
Abstract: This study aimed to study the association between organizational attractiveness, intrinsic motivation, perceived novelty, trust in the process, and the intention to apply, engage, and finish an artificial intelligence recruitment and selection process. It was also tested whether having already had the experience of having been involved in a recruitment and selection process using artificial intelligence moderated these relationships. The sample for this study consisted of 299 participants. The results indicate that organizational attractiveness and perceived novelty are positively and significantly associated with applying to, getting involved in, and completing the recruitment and selection process using artificial intelligence for participants aged between 45 and 54. For participants aged between 35 and 44, trust in the process significantly affects their intention to apply to, get involved in, and complete the recruitment and selection process using artificial intelligence. Intrinsic motivation did not prove to be a significant predictor of the intention to apply to, get involved in, and complete the recruitment and selection process using artificial intelligence.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Adaptation of the Revised Environmental Identity Scale to Adult Portuguese Native Speakers: A Validity and Reliability Study

    Get PDF
Environmental identity is a dimension of personal identity that reflects an individual’s sense of connection with nature and personal view of nature as part of her/his identity. There is a need to adapt and validate measures that assess environmental identity, namely in Portuguese. This study analyzed the validity and reliability of the Revised Environmental Identity Scale (Revised EID) in a sample of native speakers of Portuguese from 18 to 83 years old. The survey included the Portuguese translation of the Revised EID, measures of eco-anxiety, adult attachment, affective neurobiological systems, psychological symptoms, and sociodemographic information. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were conducted to assess the construct validity of the scale. It was tied to a two-factor solution (Connectedness with Nature and Protection of Nature) found in prior research. The Revised EID was positively related to feelings of anxiety about personal impact on climate change and positive emotional systems (SEEKING, CARE, and PLAY). Older participants reported higher levels in the overall environmental identity score and the Protection of Nature factor. The results indicate that the Revised EID is an appropriate measure to assess environmental identity in adult Portuguese native speakers and should be used to conduct cross-cultural studies to drive environmental and health policies.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Me-wel: Menopause and weight loss – development of model, measure, and intervention

    No full text
ABSTRACT: Middle-age significantly impacts a woman´s life, primarily due to menopause and its associated changes, such as weight gain, which poses a complex challenge. Understanding the behaviours and beliefs surrounding this phenomenon is crucial. The ME-WEL (MEnopause and WEight Loss) Project aimed to expand knowledge about weight management in middle-age and menopausal transition, employing both qualitative and quantitative methods and comprising three phases entailing eight distinct objectives. In Phase 1 (cross-sectional), quantitative instruments were developed and validated (n=1,921 middle-aged women aged 45-65 years) to assess cognitive/behavioural weight management strategies based on the Oxford Food and Activity Behaviours (OxFAB) Taxonomy (Objective 1) and weight management based on the Health Action Process Approach (HAPA) model (Objective 2). The Three Factor Eating Questionnaire-R21 was also validated (Objective 3). A quantitative study also explored the pandemic´s impact on eating behaviour and psychological symptoms in peri and postmenopausal women (Objective 4). Phase 2 (cross-sectional) used qualitative methods (n=62 postmenopausal women) and highlighted the health beliefs associated with different weight experiences during the menopausal transition (i.e., weight gain or maintenance), based on the Health Belief Model (HBM; Objective 5), the factors contributed to weight gain among women who gained weight during the menopausal transition (Objective 6), and the successful weight management strategies employed by women who maintained a healthy weight during this specific phase (Objective 7). Phase 3 (longitudinal) included the development, implementation, and evaluation of the efficacy of an intervention to promote weight management strategies and subjective well-being among postmenopausal women (BMI≥25kg/m2 ), using a randomised control trial design (nIntervention=13; nControl=14). The intervention drew upon models and taxonomies of behavioural change – HBM, HAPA, Behaviour Change Techniques (BCT), and OxFAB. The ME-WEL findings suggest that i) the HBM is suitable for gaining an in-depth understanding of the weight differences among middleaged women during the menopausal transition, and ii) promoting knowledge and anticipatory strategies regarding menopause and weight management, specifically among premenopausal women, is an important preventive approach (desirably conducted by a multidisciplinary team). Also, iii) strategies like regulation-rule setting or energy compensation can be implemented and maintained over time, and iv) short eHealth group interventions are beneficial to promote weight management (in terms of cognitive and behavioural change) and well-being.

There is still little knowledge about this association in the period of transition to adolescence, as well as the influence of other parental characteristics, namely conscious parenting. This study aims to assess whether parenting style and conscious parenting influence the quality of attachment in the transition to adolescence, from the perspective of parents and children. The sample consisted of 80 dyads of mothers/fathers and their children, aged between 8 and 12, Portuguese and Brazilian, from public and public schools. Data was collected on paper and online. The results show that from the parents' perspective, the more authoritarian or permissive they perceive their parenting style to be and the greater their acceptance without judgement, the higher their perception of ambivalent attachment. As for the children, the more they perceive non-judgemental acceptance from their parents, the higher their perception of avoidant attachment. These results reveal how parents and children have different perceptions of aspects that contribute to different attachment styles. Conclusion: Authoritarian and permissive parenting styles and conscious parenting, especially parents' non-judgemental acceptance, have a significant impact on children's insecure attachment (ambivalent and avoidant)

    Trabalho remoto e isolamento social

Estes resultados configuram-se relevantes para organizações que queiram implementar o trabalho remoto.ABSTRACT: "Social isolation" and "Remote working" are two constructs that have gained relevance in recent years. On the one hand, teleworking has gained popularity among organizations and employees. On the other hand, it makes us reflect on the impact it has on employees in terms of "Social Isolation" and "Job Satisfaction". As such, the aim of this study is to understand what impact "Social Isolation" has on the relationship between "Social Support" and "Satisfaction". At the same time, it seeks to understand the extent to which the worker's "Mode of Work" affects the association between "Social Support" and "Social Isolation". To this end, the study was carried out in the light of the "Job Demands-Resources" Model (JD-R) by Bakker and Demerouti (2007). The sample of this study consisted of 190 participants, whose necessary requirement was to be active employees at the time they answered the questionnaire. The results showed that “Social Isolation” had a partial mediating effect on all but one of the "Social Support" and "Job Satisfaction" relationships. On the other hand, the moderations showed that the variable "Work modality" has a moderating effect on the relationship between "Organizational Support" and "Social Isolation", where individuals in hybrid modality had higher levels of "Isolation" compared to individuals in face-to-face modality. These results are relevant for organizations wishing to implement teleworking

    No full text
The literature suggests that Deliberate Self-Harm (DSH) have significantly increased over the years, especially in adolescents. Understanding what facilitates and prevents adolescents from asking for help to stop these behaviours becomes increasingly important. Therefore, this study was carried out with the aim of investigating the role of family cohesion and identity development with the barriers that prevent adolescents from asking for help. 763 adolescents aged between 12 and 21 years old (M = 16.6; SD = 2.0) participated in this study, responding to a protocol with self-report questionnaires that measured the variables described above. Adolescents with and without a history of DSH were compared in relation to family cohesion and identity development. Relations were revealed between variations in family cohesion and identity development, and barriers to asking for help for DSH. Finally, the dimensions of family cohesion were analysed with the barriers to asking for help mediated by one of the dimensions of identity development, identification with commitment. The results showed that adolescents with history of DSH show signs of belonging to less cohesive families compared to adolescents without history of DSH and show characteristics of a more diffuse identity, especially in the exploratory cycle. It was also found that adolescents in more cohesive families report fewer barriers to asking for help for DSH and that identification with commitment, an exploratory dimension of identity development, plays an important role as a mediator of the relationship between family cohesion and one of the barriers to asking for help, minimizing the problem and emotional containment

The present Supervised Teaching Practice Report is part of the completion of the Master's degree in Early Childhood Education and Primary Education (1st Cycle). Its objective was to investigate the complexity and richness of a mixed-age classroom, which included students from all four years of primary education, and to explore what this organizational structure can offer to the students' learning process. The internship practice was carried out at a Private Institution of Social Solidarity, and the research topic arose from classroom context observations. A qualitative methodology was employed to conduct the research at the internship site, using semi-structured interviews, direct participant observation, and field notes as research instruments. With this approach, we aimed to understand the dynamics between students of different ages and grade levels, as well as the significant role that the teacher plays in encouraging and facilitating the management of student learning. The reflective analysis conducted helped to understand how dynamics in mixed-age classrooms enhance students' cooperation, interaction, and teamwork. It was also understood that the teacher acts as a mediator in the students' learning process, and it is essential to create a differentiated and inclusive learning environment that meets their needs, whether individually, in small groups, or large groups. ABSTRACT: The information gathered allowed for a more in-depth and reflective perspective on the internship experience and provided answers to the research questions. Thus, through the study conducted, it was understood how the dynamics present in a mixed-age group are crucial to the students' teaching and learning process, with cooperation standing out as fundamental for the group's personal and social development

    Get PDF
The VIPP-SD (Video-feedback Intervention to promote PositiveParenting and Sensitive Discipline) program has been shown topromote positive interactions between parents and children withbehavior problems. This study evaluated an adapted version forteachers (VIPP-School) through a parallel-group randomized con-trolled trial involving 58 teacher–child dyads from kindergarten tosecond grade. Teacher–child dyads were randomly assigned toVIPP-School (n = 28) or an active control group (n = 30). Intention-to-treat analyses showed improvements in teacher sensitivity (d =0.87) and supportive teacher classroom interactions (d = 0.53) inthe VIPP-School condition compared to the control condition. VIPP-School had no significant effect on teachers’ observed sensitivediscipline (although changes were in the expected direction), noron reported child externalizing behavior, overall relationship qual-ity, school happiness or teacher self-efficacy. These findings showthat the intervention, originally developed for families, could beeffectively applied to early elementary education. The limited num-ber of sessions increases the feasibility of VIPP-Schoolinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
