This study is a qualitative analysis of two interviews by two generations of women from the Belmonte crypto-Jewish community. The lack of studies in the field of psychology dedicated to the crypto-Jewish community, which is the object of study in other areas of knowledge, led to the need to try to understand this community within the scope of psychology. Given its specificity, it was necessary to frame it within the framework of Ethnopsychoanalysis, a discipline that combines the knowledge of anthropology and psychoanalysis, and which promotes an understanding of the individual within a culture. The method used is a qualitative analysis of unstructured free association interviews, FANI - Free Association Narrative Interview, developed by Hollway and Jefferson (2000, 2001, 2013), anchored in psychoanalytic theory and the premise of the defended and contradictory subject. The choice of the qualitative method is related to the need for a free, non-directive collection that would allow the subjects to express themselves without conditioning. The analysis of the narratives highlighted the themes of identity and the female-male relationship, which provided information on the quality of intergenerational and transgenerational content and the ways in which it is transmitted. The conclusion of this study highlights a field of possibilities yet to be explored that would enhance a better understanding of this population, which, although circumscribed, can help to shed light on issues that have been little explored throughout history, such as the trauma of the isolation to which they were subjected, silencing, and the psychic maintenance of transgenerational dynamics

Desta forma, a intervenção psicológica deverá estar assente no crescimento pós-traumático. Face às diversas limitações encontradas, os dados obtidos carecem de mais informações obtidas a partir de estudos futuros.ABSTRACT: When a woman undergoes a mastectomy, there is a prospect of a real mutilation of her breast that refers to a narcissistic wound, since it vehemently calls into question her self-esteem and body image. Ahead of the woman is the work of mourning the loss she has suffered, that is, the psychic apparatus must be able to connect the traumatizing impressions. Thus, psychological intervention should be based on post-traumatic growth. Bearing in mind that the existing literature has highlighted contrasting information regarding the influence of breast reconstruction on the grieving process, the main objective was to investigate this relationship and its intervening variables, by comparing two groups – with and without breast reconstruction. The present study included 74 female participants who had undergone mastectomy (M= 45.23; SD= 9.23). Participants answered self-report scales about Body Image (CI), Grief Work (ELI) and Post-Traumatic Development (PTID). The results suggest that Breast Reconstruction (or not) does not significantly influence Grief Work or Post-Traumatic Development. In addition, it was not possible to verify whether Body Image mediated the relationship between breast reconstruction (or not) due to a failure of the assumptions. In view of the various limitations found, the data obtained require more information from future studies

Its prevalence directly correlates with persisting gender inequality and the prevailing influence of patriarchal values within our present society. This study aims to investigate femicide and its protective factors from the perspective of the ecological model. Employing a qualitative approach, this research conducts a meticulous thematic analysis of reports sourced from the Equipa de Análise Retrospetiva de Homicídio em Violência Doméstica (EARHVD), accessible online between 2017 and 2021. The findings extracted from ten (10) reports unmask significant flaws and shortcomings in the battle against femicide, spanning the dimensions of Health (H), Justice (J), Security (S), and Community (C). The objective is to analyze the flaws in femicide prevention strategies, aiming to identify the essential elements for preventing this phenomenon

Os resultados não corroboram as nossas hipóteses.ABSTRACT: A lucid dream is a dream in which the dreamer is aware that they are dreaming. Several authors have studied the possibility of using lucid dreams therapeutically to treat nightmares. Based on this idea, we put forward 2 hypotheses: lucid dreams correlate negatively with levels of anxiety caused by dreams - and lucid dreams correlate negatively with levels of propensity to have nightmares. Our sample included 325 participants, 252 female and 73 male, aged between 18 and 75. As for the instruments, we used the LuCiD to assess lucidity in dreams (along with other dimensions of dream awareness), the Van Dream Anxiety Scale (VDAS) to understand the levels of anxiety associated with dreams and the Nightmare Proneness Scale (NPS) to understand the levels of propensity to have nightmares. The results did not support our hypothese

There is a vast literature that explores the relationship between religion and emotional well-being, as well as the strategies used to regulate emotions adaptively. This study seeks to deepen the association between distinct types of religions, the use of different emotion regulation strategies and the mental health of a total of 257 participants from three religious’ groups (Christian/Catholic, Protestant/Evangelical, Hindu/Ismaili/Islamic) and a control group of Atheists/non-religious. Self-report scales were used to assess perceptions of emotional invalidation, emotion regulation strategies (expressive suppression and cognitive reappraisal) and mental health (depression, anxiety, and stress). Differential and correlational analyses suggest that there are differences in the use of cognitive reappraisal, indicating that evangelicals use this strategy more and report better mental health compared to atheists/non-religious, just as Christians/Catholics have better mental health than Hindus/Ismailis/Muslims. The data also suggest an association of the use of suppression with poorer mental health only for the Protestant/Evangelical and Atheist/non-religious groups. The results also suggest an association between perceived emotional invalidation and use of more suppression and poorer mental health in all religious groups except the Hindu/Ismaili/Islamic group. Finally, there was a negative association between cognitive reappraisal and mental health only in the atheist/non religious group. Overall, this study highlights the importance of understanding how different religious and non-religious groups apply emotion regulation strategies, providing important clues for more effective approaches to mental health promotion in diverse contexts

Oxytocin and state attachment responses to secure base support after stress in middle childhood

    Get PDF
We tried to replicate the finding that receiving care increases children’s oxytocin and secure state attachment levels, and tested whether secure trait attachment moderates the oxytocin and state attachment response to care. 109 children (9-11 years old; M = 9.59; SD = 0.63; 34.9% boys) participated in a within-subject experiment. After stress induction (Trier Social Stress Test), children first remained alone and then received maternal secure base support. Salivary oxytocin was measured eight times. Secure trait and state attachment were measured with questionnaires, and Secure Base Script knowledge was assessed. Oxytocin levels increased after receiving secure base support from mother after having been alone. Secure state attachment changed less. Trait attachment and Secure Base Script knowledge did not moderate oxytocin or state attachment responses to support. This might mean that, regardless of the attachment history, in-the-moment positive attachment experiences might have a beneficial effect on trait attachment development in middle childhood.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Evidence-based interventions targeted at behavioral inhibition, shyness, and anxious withdrawal during the preschool years: A rapid review

    Get PDF
High and stable behavioral inhibition (BI) during early childhood may place individuals at increased risk of experiencing anxiety during the COVID-19 crisis. Prior knowledge syntheses showed that selective prevention interventions were efective in reducing child BI and anxiety. However, the efectiveness of preschool-based universal and selective prevention interventions targeted at BI to improve child social outcomes remains unclear. Due to the vulnerability of highly inhibited children, this rapid review aimed to (1) synthetize the characteristics of evidence-based interventions targeted at BI, and (2) summarize intervention outcomes in domains of child individual and social functioning. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs), published between january 1991 and december 2021, conducted with highly inhibited children aged 3 to 5 years, were included in the review. Thirteen RCTs on four evidence-based interventions targeted at BI were retained. Most studies were conducted in samples of married/cohabitating and highly educated mothers and almost half of them described parent-only interventions. Three pilot RCTs on child-only and multimodal interventions found signifcant post-intervention improvements in observed child social competence and positive peer interactions. Pre-to-post intervention changes in parent and teacher ratings on child social outcomes were less consistent across studies. Further large-scale RCTs with medium-to-long term follow-ups are needed to examine intervention outcomes in domains of child social functioning, using a multi-informant and multi-method approach. After the COVID-19 crisis, preschool-based universal interventions targeting BI may enhance the engagement of inhibited children from diverse communities and contribute to the generalization of intervention efects to naturalistic peer settings.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The validity of the Violence Risk Scale (VRS) in a Portuguese sample of remand prisoners

    Get PDF
This study aims to test the psychometric properties of the Violent Risk Scale (VRS) in a sample of Portuguese remand prisoners. A total of 133 subjects participated in the present study. We carried out a Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) to test the originally proposed two factor structure. Results showed evidence to support the VRS's psychometric qualities. The CFA tested the two-factor structure and showed evidence of the goodness of fit of the original two-factor model. Also, our findings indicated acceptable internal consistency for both sub scales. The correlational analyses supported both convergent and discriminant validity of the VRS. Finally, this study also tested known-groups validity. The VRS score showed a satisfactory postdictive accuracy, which means that it is able to demonstrate distinctive scores for groups known to vary on the variables being measured. We consider this work represents an essential support for decision-makers to evaluate the appropriateness of different judicial measures.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

We read/listened to these dreams, analyzing the intertwining of the crossings of adolescence and the pandemic from the perspective of these dream narratives, supported by the ethics of psychoanalysis. Guided by floating attention, we allowed ourselves to be influenced by the transferential criterion in the selection of 16 out of the 45 adolescent dreams in the collection that challenged and raised questions for us. In these dream plots, we observed the intensity of the adolescent's psychic work to reposition themselves in their relationship with the discursive universe. We recognized manifestations of the invasive and unpredictable nature of the pandemic, portraying the suffering resulting from the deprivations imposed by the pandemic context, such as social isolation, whose effects are especially dramatic during adolescence. We noticed representations of anguish and images of helplessness, as well as manifestations related to the various losses involved in this context, to the transformations of the body, and to the drive reorganization typical of the adolescent passage. We also identified that in this dream plot, there is something paradigmatic of what was being experienced during the pandemic period in Brazil. We understand that the dream operates as a resource for crossing the night, that dream narratives carry within them the possibilities of transmitting shared experiences, and that the function of dreaming – through the work of language that makes up the dream and its consequent significant polysemy – can produce an opening of meanings that establishes a dimension of both testimony and creation, in the direction of an ethics of awakening

Crenças parentais, práticas parentais e comportamentos externalizantes em crianças em idade pré-escolar (3-6 anos)

    Get PDF
The parental information processing model establishes that the parents’ beliefs regarding children’s (mal)adaptative behaviours, such as physical aggression, are one of the factors that can be directly or indirectly associated (via parental practices) with children’s externalizing behaviours. However, few studies have examined the associations between these variables, recognizing the multidimensional nature of parental beliefs (i.e., emotional reactions, causal attributions, socialization goals, anticipated strategies). The main aim of this thesis was to examine the associations between the multiple dimensions of mothers’ and fathers’ beliefs about physical aggression, parental practices, and externalizing behaviours at preschool age. The sample consisted of 169 mothers and 52 fathers of preschool-aged children (3-6 years), recruited in private preschools in Lisbon Metropolitan Area. All the parents completed the Parental Beliefs Questionnaire, the Child-Rearing Report Questionnaire and the Social Competence and Behavior Evaluation Scale to assess parental beliefs about aggression, parental practices, and children’s externalizing behaviours. Our results showed that positive associations were observed between negative emotional reactions and reports of parental restrictiveness, particularly for mothers. Parental reports of greater use of anticipatory strategies involving emotional appeal were associated with reports of lower nurturance and greater restrictiveness. Reports of children’s externalizing behaviors were negatively associated with emotional reactions of surprise from both mothers and fathers. However, reports of anticipatory strategies involving punishment or suggestion and short-term child-centered socialization goals were only positively associated with reports of externalizing behaviors for fathers. Contrary to previous research that highlighted the importance of causal attributions, our results seem to suggest that the affective and cognitive dimensions of parental beliefs related to parental expectations are those that are associated with reports of parental practices and, to a lesser extent, with reports of children’s externalizing behaviors
