This report is based on a research carried out under the Master's Degree in Pre-School Education of the University Institute of Psychological, Social and Life Sciences and of the Higher School of Childhood Educators Maria Ulrich (ISPA / ESEIMU). Pre-school education. This is a qualitative research, where the objective is to highlight the holistic properties of a pedagogic garden in a kindergarten context. The garden brings us to outer space, compels us to reflect on the environment and children are stimulated globally. For this to be possible, we started with a review of the literature where several authors were analyzed, from which a model of analysis was developed to highlight the potentialities of a pedagogical garden. Through the use of some instruments: participant and non-participant observation (field notes, photographic records, training diary and audio recordings). Analysing the results it is possible to see that despite some challenges presented by outer space and the pedagogic garden, the benefits for children, adults and the institution are evident. It is concluded, with this study, that educators have a fundamental role in the dynamization of outer space and consequently in the pedagogical garden. There is a need for investment by professionals so that it is possible to overcome the challenges of the garden and convey to the caretakers all the benefits of it. Above all you must believe in your ideals

Fostering teachers’ resilience and well-being through professional learning: effects from a training programme

    No full text
Resilience can be fostered amongst teachers in order to sustain their well-being and commitment to quality education. This study examined the effects of a training programme focused on resilience and well-being, targeting in-service Portuguese teachers. This paper reports a study using a quasi-experimental design involving 59 teachers (35 in two experimental groups and 24 in a control group). The effects of the professional learning programme were assessed using the following measures: motivation, global resilience, commitment to the profession, self-efficacy, school support, positive and negative experiences, work well-being, and work meaning. The experimental group participated in an 18-hour professional learning programme. Results showed the effects of the professional learning programme over all the variables, with the exception of Teacher Commitment to the Profession and School Support. These findings contribute to the growing body of research conceptualising teacher resilience as a multidimensional construct and have implications for teacher professional learning programmes.Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia - FCTinfo:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Batillipes pennaki Marcus, 1946 (Arthrotardigrada: Batillipedidae): deciphering a species complex

    No full text
Batillipes pennaki has been considered a common and a cosmopolitan marine tardigrade species. However, the original diagnosis of this species is very incomplete, and consequently there is a high probability of incorrect records. Therefore, a comparative analysis of quantitative and qualitative morphological characters among eight different populations from the Atlantic basin was done in this study to investigate if B. pennaki is a complex of similar species, each with a restricted distribution range. The result of discriminant analyses showed clear morphometric differences between populations that were arranged into three main groups, distinguishing Western Atlantic populations, Eastern Atlantic populations and a Mediterranean population. Furthermore, the result of analyses of morphological structures revealed peculiarities of some traits with taxonomic relevance, such as leg IV sensory organs and primary clavae, consistent with the clusters revealed by quantitative data, allowing us to distinguish three different pseudocryptic species and supporting the hypothesis that B. pennaki is a species complex.Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia - FCT; FEDER; CAPESinfo:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

The impact of intervention programs for improving textual production in children of 4th grade

Abstract: Explicit feedback is an important factor in the revision process to give children’s clues to evaluate their own narrative text (McCurdy, Skinner, Watson, & Shriver, 2008. The aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of a narrative writing programme where the experiment gave to 4th grade children an instrument to revise their text. The participants were 71 children from 4th grade, from classrooms were teachers hardly gave them instructions about the structure of narrative texts. Children were divided in 3 different experimental groups that were submitted to 3 different types of writing programmes and 1 control group. Children were equivalent on cognitive level and on language development. Each experimental group, had to write down, 17 narrative texts, one for session. Children from experimental group 1 and 2 were given an instrument with a narrative structure to evaluate by their own means the quality of their text. Children from experimental group 3 were only asked to revise the text, without any further instruction. Control group children spent the same amount of time in math exercises and reading. The children from all experimental group improved the quality of their narrative when compared with children from control group, according PROESC criteria. However, the texts from children of experimental group, 1, 2 and 3 had not significant different in what concerns to children’s evolution from pre to post-test. This suggest the importance of the image sequence as support for children's revision process.

Factors associated with cervical cancer screening among migrant women in Europe: a systematic scoping review protocol

    Get PDF
Cervical cancer is the 4th most common cancer in women in Europe. Cervical cancer screening (CCS) reduces its incidence and mortality, but its effectiveness relies on the quality of screening and women's participation. Migrant women show low participation in CCS, which might compromise an early diagnosis of the disease. Since migration rates are high in Europe, it is important to understand which barriers and facilitators influence participation in CCS among migrants to develop strategies to increase their participation. The main objective of this study is to analyze existing evidence about the factors associated with CCS participation among migrant women in Europe,info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Changes and consistencies in marine and coastal bird numbers on Kidney Island (Falkland Islands) over half a century

    No full text
Detecting change is necessary for effective ecosystem management, yet temporal data on key ecosystem components are lacking for many polar and subpolar regions. For example, although the Falkland Islands hosts internationally important marine and coastal bird populations, few of these were surveyed until the late twentieth century. The avifauna of one small island, Kidney Island, was surveyed between 1958 and 1963, however. This typical tussac-covered island has remained free of non-native predators, so changes in its avifauna may reflect variation in the wider marine environment. In order to obtain a rare snapshot of such changes, we re-surveyed Kidney Island’s avifauna between 2017 and 2019, counting either individuals, breeding pairs or nest sites of marine and coastal waterbirds. Waterfowl, waders and cormorant populations were broadly stable, but several populations showed profound differences over the six decades between surveys. In particular, Southern Rockhopper penguins Eudyptes chrysocome collapsed from > 3000 to 200 pairs, while Sooty Shearwaters Ardenna grisea expanded by two orders of magnitude. Due to its isolation and tight fisheries management, the Falklands marine environment is assumed to be relatively pristine. Our limited results suggest that sufficient changes may nevertheless have occurred in the region’s marine ecosystem to have detectable impacts on breeding seabirds.Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia - FCTinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The importance of memory for the success of cooperation under ecological adversity

    No full text
While cooperation maximizes collective welfare, selfishness maximizes short-term individual benefits. Why should any organism cooperate? Selfishness seems to be favored by natural selection. While this presents a classical dilemma in many fields, cooperation is observed at all levels of biological organization. By preserving the common good, cooperation may guarantee better survival chances for all. Evolution and maintenance of cooperation are possible by a combination of multiple mechanisms including reciprocity, which in primates and particularly in humans is largely dependent on memory and the ability to exchange social information, a function of language. In this article, we present a multi-agent model developed with the aim of evaluating the importance of memory in cognitive and social adaptations for cooperation based on reciprocity when populations are under ecological stress. We show that in a society under ecological pressure, the reciprocity network permitted by collaborative memory promotes cooperation.Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologiainfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Seeking help for sexual difficulties: findings from a study with older adults in four European countries

    No full text
Sexual well-being is an important part of life for many people aged 60 and older. However, older adults often face barriers to seeking and receiving help for sexual difficulties. This study used data from a probability survey (n = 3820) on sexuality and ageing to examine help-seeking in 60–75-year-olds in Norway, Denmark, Belgium, and Portugal. More men (12.2%) than women (6.8%) had sought professional help for a sexual difficulty in the past 5 years. The main reason for help-seeking was that sex was important to the participant and/or their relationship. The main source of professional help was the primary care physician. Of those who had sought professional help, 48% were satisfied or very satisfied with the help received, 31.6% were neither satisfied nor dissatisfied, and 20.4% were dissatisfied or very dissatisfied. Others had sought help from informal sources, particularly partners, friends, or websites. The main reasons for not seeking professional help included not being distressed by the symptoms, and thinking that the difficulty would clear up on its own. Multivariable regression analysis revealed that significant correlates of seeking professional help for women and men were level of distress about the sexual difficulty. With regard to women, those who were married, and/or from Portugal were more likely to have sought help. And regarding men, those who attended religious services were more likely to have sought professional help. These results have important implications for healthcare and can be used to inform the development and delivery of services for older adults who experience sexual difficulties.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The present study aims to analyse the relationship between mindfulness with job satisfaction and with task performance, as well as to explore the mediating role that emotional regulation in the cognitive reappraisal component has in those relationships. The sample consists of 414 participants, in which 235 are females and 179 are males with ages between 21 and 62 years. To assess the level of awareness and attention (mindfulness) the Mindful Attention Scale (MAAS) developed by Brown and Ryan (2003) was used; The cognitive reappraisal was analysed through the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ) scale as proposed by Gross and John (2003); The job satisfaction was analysed based on The Generic Job Satisfaction scale, developed by Macdonald and Maclntyre (1997); The perception of task performance was evaluated through the Individual Work Performance Questionnaire (IWPQ) scale developed by Koopmans et al. (2012). The results revealed a positive relationship between mindfulness and task performance. However, no mediating role of cognitive reappraisal between mindfulness with job satisfaction was verified

Sexual Harassment in an Academic Contexts has been a debated topic over the past few months, due to the various cases of harassment reported by college students in United States universities. In Portugal, studies about sexual harassment in universities are scarce. However, it was recently found that people who are part of the Student Body harass university students inside Portuguese Universities. Therefore, a need has emerged to carry out a qualitative study with Portuguese University Students, based on the Giorgi Descriptive Method, to try to understand how Portuguese Students experience Sexual Harassment in Academic Contexts and how they cope with it. The results show that Portuguese Students experience Harassment is something that has an impact on their daily life and that they are mainly harassed by their colleagues. In addition, they use avoidance strategies to deal with the harassment
