This paper aimed to understand how literary education is held in an institution for young people and adults with “Intellectual and Developmental Difficulty” (IDD). Specifically, it was intended to 1) Characterize the institutional context with regard to intervention in the area of literacy regarding the environment and literacy activities; and 2) Characterize the institution's clients regarding their literacy skills and reading motivation. The research strategy adopted was the case study, in which the unit under analysis corresponded to a particular social solidarity institution (IPSS), entitled “Quinta-essência – Qe, Uma Nova Linguagem para a Incapacidade”, constituted under the non-profit civil association for young people and adults with IDD. Eight clients from Qe's Occupational Activities Center (OAC) participated in this study. The data collection methodology used was the participant observation, complemented by a structured register (two pedagogical observation grids in the field of reading and writing) and a set of tests developed in the emerging literacy research. In general, it is considered that this study responded to the objectives set. The results showed that Qe values the literary education of its clients, because, for this purpose, it invests in different organized work areas, in diverse and frequent projects and activities, facilitating the necessary resources for its development. In addition, it was found that the clients analyzed are able and motivated for the acquisition and development of literacy

Adaptation to Portuguese of the short version of the Supervisory Relationship Questionnaire

Abstract: The main objective of this study was the adaptation to Portuguese of a questionnaire of supervisory relationship – short version of the Supervisory Relationship Questionnaire (supervisee version). The lack of national measures on this construct and its importance to the satisfaction with the supervision, development of the trainee and to the effectiveness of supervision motivated this investigation. Ninety clinical psychologists/psychotherapists in supervision were recruited. To adapt this questionnaire we made a translation, a retroversion, a pretest. The participants also completed the Short-scale Eysenck Personality Questionnaire Revised (adaptation Almiro & Simões, 2013) to ascertain divergent validity and the CASES (adaptation Lamares & Conceição, 2012) to determine the predictive validity. A small adjustment was made, in the confirmatory factorial analysis. The results show a measure composed of 17 items divided by the same three subscales of the original measure. Adequate psychometric properties (internal consistency, factorial validity and divergent validity) have been demonstrated. The utility and practical application of this measure and suggestions for future research are discussed.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Lifelong conviction pathways and self-reported offending: Towards a deeper comprehension of criminal career development

    No full text
This article investigates to what extent life-course self-reported offending is related to the four developmental pathways model of criminal careers. Self-reported offending from ages 10 to 48 years is analyzed in the Cambridge Study in Delinquent Development, which is a prospective longitudinal survey of the development of offending. Vandalism, shoplifting, assault and fraud were selfreported by more than half of the non-convicted males; however, individuals in convicted pathways had significantly more self-reported offences. In particular, versatile serious recidivists had a large number of self-reported offences, an earlier age of onset and a later age of desistance. A theoretical approach to criminal careers is proposed, which relates childhood vulnerabilities to lifelong selfreported offending and official criminal careers. The findings suggest that the key criminological research issue is how and why any person exceeds normative levels of offending, between the expected beginning in childhood/adolescence and the expected ending during middle adulthood.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The “ins” and “outs” of person perception: The influence of consonant wanderings in judgments of warmth and competence

    No full text
In five studies (N=638), we extended the in-out effect to person perception, examining the influence of oral approach-avoidance movements activated by word articulation, on preference, sociability and competence judgments of mock-usernames. Users with inward, in contrast to outward-usernames, were always preferred and judged as warmer. However, they were judged as equally competent. The differential impact of the in-out effect in the core dimensions of social perception suggests that the phenomenon relies on the affective mechanism of approach-avoidance that is only pertinent to judgments related to the warmth dimension. The present research provides further support for the link between the activation of oral muscles and impression formation, emphasizing the relevance of the in-out effect for the person perception domain and embodied social cognition.

This study aimed to evaluate the importance of sound-musical expression in the development and evaluation skills in children and young people with special educational needs. It was intended to collect and analyze data in order to empirically contribute to a mapping of the individual sound-musical development profile of children and young people with special educational needs. This study proceeded with the translation, adaptation and implementation of a specific music program, the Sounds of Intent, which works the development and evaluation of musical behavior in children and young people with special educational needs. It was intended, therefore, to focus as measuring target distal, proximal, cognitive and emotional behaviors in children and young people with special educational needs. The study participants were children and young people diagnosed with special educational needs placed in structured teaching units, multiple disabilities public teaching units and institutions, as well as the teachers/specialists in special needs. Keeping in mind the purpose of the study and to clarify, an action research of a longitudinal multiple case study methodology was made, this methodology assumes a qualitative and experimental nature. This methodology as requiring a detailed description of the participants, was also used as instrument for data collection, matrices of development designed to evaluate this type of intervention, interviews addressed to teachers and documental analysis process. The results suggested that it is possible to systematically observe and evaluate the development of students with special educational needs over a given period of time, through the manifestation of sound-musical behavior through a program such as Sounds of Intent. The data collected through the grid and the concentric profile of the students demonstrated a wide variety of sound-musical manifestations throughout the intervention period. All students demonstrated different levels of progress with regard to their musical behaviors

The complexity of relations between dimensions of social perception: Decomposing bivariate associations with crossed random factors

    No full text
Theories of social perception argue that there are two underlying dimensions of social judgment, variously labeled competence/agency and warmth/communality. How these relate to each other has been the focus of extensive empirical work with research showing both a ‘halo” relation (targets rated more positively on one dimension are rated more positively on the other) and a “compensatory” relation (targets rated more positively on one dimension are rated more negatively on the other). We argue that these divergent findings result from different comparative contexts under which participants judge social stimuli and on the underlying factors that contribute to variance in the resulting judgments. In two studies, we vary the comparative context under which perceivers made judgments and we decompose the variance in such judgments (and their covariance) into components due to the random factors of participants, targets, and their interaction. Halo relations emerge for participant means, regardless of comparative context. On the other hand, the covariance between target means changes signs under different comparative contexts, as does the interaction covariance.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Loneliness in adolescence: Confirmatory factor analysis of the relational provisions loneliness questionnaire (RPLQ) in a Portuguese sample

    No full text
The present study assesses the factor structure, psychometric adequacy, and invariance across sex and age of the Relational Provisions Loneliness Questionnaire (RPLQ). Discriminant validity with an external criterion was also tested. In a sample of Portuguese adolescents, from 7th to 9th grade (N ¼ 817), Confirmatory Factor Analyses (CFA) were conducted to test a four-factor model of loneliness (lack of integration and/or intimacy in peer group and/or family). Results evidenced empirical support for the structure of the RPLQ loneliness scale, which fitted very well the proposed model, and provided adequate fit to the Portuguese data. There was substantial support for the construct validity (factorial, convergent, and discriminant) and reliability of the RPLQ. Measurement invariance (configural, metric, and scalar) was established across sex and age. Finally, it was assured discriminant validity, provided by the contrast with the social functioning dimensions in peer group. Overall, our findings support the conceptualization of loneliness in adolescence by peer- and family-related loneliness through lack of integration and intimacy. In a single instrument, the RPLQ loneliness scale combines measures of four important aspects of adolescents’ social life. This seems to be an adequate instrument to be used in the study of adolescents’ loneliness, in its different forms and across relational contextsinfo:eu-repo/semantics/submittedVersio

The relevance of the SESII-W/M in establishing a relationship between sexual difficulties and sexual excitation/inhibition

    Get PDF
Aims: The main purpose of this study is to analyse the relationship between sexual difficulties and factors of sexual arousal, excitement, and sexual inhibition among men and women. Method: A total of 1,878 participants, of whom 983 were men (52%) and 895 were women (48%), with a mean age of 35.9 years (SD = 11.9; range = 18-79), were recruited online. The study’s instruments included a socio-demographic questionnaire, a questionnaire about sexual difficulties, and the Sexual Excitation/Sexual Inhibition Inventory for Women and Men (SESII-W/M). Results: Women with and without sexual difficulties differed significantly on all subscales of the SESII-W/M. Men with sexual difficulties scored significantly higher in the dimensions of Inhibitory Cognitions and the Dyadic Elements of the Sexual Interaction than men without difficulties. Inhibitory Cognitions was the strongest predictor of sexual difficulties for both men and women. Relationship Importance was also a strong predictor of sexual difficulties in women. Conclusions: Sexual inhibition serves as a predictor of sexual difficulties. The SESII-W/M seems to work better in determining the factors of sexual inhibition as predictors of sexual difficulties among women, than in identifying causes of sexual difficulties among men.
