The aim of this study was to evaluate the relation between Cyberbullying and Perceived Performance in Portuguese football and futsal referees. Furthermore, this study also tested the relation between Emotional Intelligence and Perceived Performance as well as the role of Emotional Intelligence as a moderator of the relation between Cyberbullying and Perceived Performance. This study counted with a total of 398 Portuguese referees of both football and futsal with ages between 16 and 58 years old (M = 29.82, DP = 8.34), with 350 being male and 48 female subjects. Three instruments were used to assess the different variables. To evaluate the levels of Cyberbullying, the Cyberbullying Questionnaire was used, based on the behavioural patterns of victimization (CCB-V) (Pinto & Cunha 2011). The Trait Metal Mood Scale was used to evaluate the Emotional Intelligence levels. Lastly, the Perception of Sports Yield Questionnaire was used to evaluate the Perceived Performance (Gomes, 2016). Results obtained in this study evidenced a non-significant relation between the levels of Cyberbullying and the referees’ Perceived Performance, with the role of Emotional Intelligence being non-significant as well. There was, however, a significant relation between Emotional Intelligence and the referees’ Perceived Performance

Fibropapillomatosis and the chelonid Alphaherpesvirus 5 in green turtles from West Africa

    Get PDF
Fibropapillomatosis (FP) is a tumorigenic panzootic disease of sea turtles, most common in green turtles (Chelonia mydas). FP is linked to the chelonid alphaherpesvirus 5 (ChAHV5) and to degraded habitats and, though benign, large tumours can hinder vital functions, causing death. We analyse 108 green turtles, captured in 2018 and 2019, at key foraging grounds in Guinea-Bissau and Mauritania, West Africa, for the presence of FP, and use real-time PCR to detect ChAHV5 DNA, in 76 individuals. The prevalence of FP was moderate; 33% in Guinea-Bissau (n = 36) and 28% in Mauritania (n = 72), and most turtles were mildly affected, possibly due to low human impact at study locations. Juveniles had higher FP prevalence (35%, n = 82) compared to subadults (5%, n = 21), probably because individuals acquire resistance over time. ChAHV5 DNA was detected in 83% (n = 24) of the tumour biopsies, consistent with its role as aetiological agent of FP and in 26% (n = 27) of the ‘normal’ skin (not showing lesions) from FP turtles. Notably, 45% of the asymptomatic turtles were positive for ChAHV5, supporting multifactorial disease expression. We report the first baselines of FP and ChAHV5 prevalence for West Africa green turtles, essential to assess evolution of disease and future impacts of anthropogenic activities.Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia - FCTinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Communicative gestures in 7–12‐month infants: A phylogenetic comparative approach

    No full text
Different methodologies applied in human and non-human primate studies limit the comparisons that can be made. The early communicative gestures of 10 children between 7 and 12 months were analysed using a descriptive approach usually found in non-human primate studies. Silent-visual gestures were the most used, followed by contact and audible gestures. The use of the different modalities of gestures did not differ with the infants' gender or age, unlike findings from studies on great apes. However, signalers chose different gestural sensory modalities according to the attentional state of the audience, similarly to other great apes: more silent-visual gestures were used when the visual attention of the recipient is present. Thus, intentionality in gestural communication was not only detected through behavioural cues but also supported by the use of different strategies according to the attentional state of the recipient. Importantly, this study suggests that human infants consider the attentional state of their partners during communication earlier in ontogeny than previously thought.Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia - FCTinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Understanding spectator sustainable transportation intentions in international sport tourism events

    Get PDF
It is vital to study spectator responses to environmental campaigns to advance environmental sustainability initiatives. Therefore, this investigation aimed to identify which factors influence spectator sustainable transport intentions and perform a spectator segmentation based on their responses. Data were collected from 355 spectators at an international surfing event hosted in a renowned surfing destination. The data were analysed in two stages. First, through the sport sustainability campaign evaluation model to infer spectator sustainable transport intentions. Second, through non-hierarchical cluster analysis, to segment the sample based on those intentions. The results added a direct relationship between the points of attachment and sustainable transport intentions. Furthermore, the results highlighted the effect of constraints, points of attachment and past sustainable behaviours as predictors of spectator sustainable transport intentions. In addition, differences in needs (i.e., aesthetic), attachment to the community, lack of time, lack of access and past sustainable behaviours were found within the three analysed clusters. Organisers of sport tourism events should develop sustainable transport campaigns promoting the destination’s aesthetic features, strengthening the connection between the local community and the event spectators, and improving the availability of information on transport services to increase spectator commitment to more sustainable modes of transport.Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia - FCTinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Cross-cultural adaptation and psychometric assessment of the Portuguese language version of the Eating and Appraisal due to Emotions and Stress (EADES) Questionnaire in Brazilian adults

    Get PDF
Purposes To develop a Brazilian Portuguese version of the Eating and Appraisal due to Emotions and Stress (EADES) Questionnaire and estimate the psychometric properties of the EADES factorial model for young Brazilian adults and also to assess the association between EADES factors and age, body mass index (BMI), and economic level. Methods The cross-cultural adaptation was performed using a standardized protocol. The psychometric properties were assessed separately for each sex. A structural model for each sex was developed to investigate the influence of age, economic level, and BMI on the EADES factors. Results A total of 1240 participants completed the study [65.8% female, mean age 23.91 (SD = 5.03) years]. The EADES original factorial model did not present good psychometric properties. Then, a factorial model proposed for a Mexican sample was tested and a different model was fitted for each sex. The results showed that younger women have lower self-efficacy and self-confidence and poorer assessment of resources and coping skills. Women with a higher economic level have lower self-efficacy. Higher BMI was associated with lower self-efficacy and self-confidence in both sexes. Younger men have lower self-efficacy and poorer assessment of resources and coping skills. Conclusions The Brazilian Portuguese version of the EADES provided valid and reliable data after refinement, and a different model was fitted for each sex. Sex, age, BMI, and economic level were significantly associated with the EADES factors. Level of evidence Level V, descriptive cross-sectional study.FAPESPinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Operationalizing intentionality in primate communication: Social and ecological considerations

    Get PDF
An intentional transfer of information is central to human communication. When comparing nonhuman primate communication systems to language, a critical challenge is to determine whether a signal is used in intentional, goal-oriented ways. As it is not possible to directly observe psychological states in any species, comparative researchers have inferred intentionality via behavioral markers derived from studies on prelinguistic human children. Recent efforts to increase consistency in nonhuman primate communication studies undervalue the effect of possible sources of bias: some behavioral markers are not generalizable across certain signal types (gestures, vocalizations, and facial expressions), contexts, settings, and species. Despite laudable attempts to operationalize first-order intentionality across signal types, a true “multimodal” approach requires integration across their sensory components (visual-silent, contact, audible), as a signal from a certain type can comprise more than one sensory component. Here we discuss how the study of intentional communication in nonlinguistic systems is hampered by issues of reliability, validity, consistency, and generalizability. We then highlight future research avenues that may help to understand the use of goal-oriented communication by opting, whenever possible, for reliable, valid, and consistent behavioral markers, but also taking into account sampling biases and integrating detailed observations of intraspecific communicative interactions.Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia - FCTinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Tracking data and the conservation of the high seas: Opportunities and challenges

    Get PDF
    1. Biologging technology is rapidly advancing—scientists are obtaining data on movement and behaviour for a range of species, more accurately than ever before. With this information, it is possible to understand more about important areas and their connections across the open ocean including the high seas, beyond national jurisdictions. But an absence of a global governance framework has so far hindered a coordinated approach to conservation action on the high seas. 2. We showcase a candidate high seas MPA in the Northeast Atlantic identified primarily from seabird tracking data and being taken forward under a regional process: the North Atlantic Current and Evlanov Seamount (NACES) MPA, under the OSPAR Commission. It provides a unique case study to learn about the intricacies of implementation when applying tracking information for conservation. From this, we identify the facilitating conditions and challenges faced from identification to designation and highlight actionable opportunities for future area-based management of the high seas that will be made possible under a new agreement. 3. Policy implications. The North Atlantic Current and Evlanov Seamount (NACES) MPA demonstrates the power of translating tracking data into usable geospatial knowledge to inform conservation and policy and provides an exemplar for a data-driven approach to high seas conservation that can become a reality under the forthcoming governance framework (under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction (known as the BBNJ Agreement)). This new agreement presents a unique conservation opportunity both for the application of tracking data to conservation outcomes and for the protection of migratory species.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Reading is an essential skill for the integral development of the individual and a fundamental instrument for the exercise of full citizenship in society. Therefore, developing this skill early on is to provide the child with the means for a successful academic career and an autonomous and empowered future life. With this work, we intend to demonstrate the benefits of the early introduction of reading and writing in a preschool context. We organized simple activities in the classroom to approach these skills, of a playful-pedagogical nature, which involved educators, assistants, children and families, with the aim of promoting contact with books and developing expression and creativity. The activity started with a reading exercise and culminated in the production of a book by the children
