What distresses sexual well-being among older adults in different cultures? A qualitative study with Slovenian and Portuguese older adults
Objective To analyze the perspectives of sexual unwellness (SU) of Portuguese and Slovenian older adults was the objective
of this study. A qualitative research was carried out, in which these perceptions were analyzed at a cultural level.
Methods The sample of this study consisted of 136 older participants, between 65 and 96 years of age. Participants were
of two different nationalities and lived in the community. Participants were interviewed, and all interviews were carried out
through the process of literal transcription and subsequent content analysis.
Results Eight key mutually exclusive themes emerged from the interviews: unavailability of partner; traditional values; body
restrictions; low self-esteem and well-being; poor social support; dissatisfaction with physical appearance; pain during sex;
and difficulties meeting new people. Unavailability of partner was the most important theme (17.9%) for the studied sample
and specifically among Portuguese participants. Conversely, difficulties meeting new people were the least reported theme
(6.8%) for the entire sample. For Slovenians traditional values were most relevant with respect to feeling sexually unwell.
Conclusions Older adults from two different countries reported diverse sexual experiences. Eight mutual-exclusive themes
were extensively illustrated.
Policy Implications These findings are evidence for cultural-adapted interventions and policy making in the context of older
adults’ sexual well-being, particularly in terms of its relation with aging well.Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia - FCTinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Applying genomic approaches to delineate conservation strategies using the freshwater mussel Margaritifera margaritifera in the Iberian Peninsula as a model
Efective conservation actions to counteract the current decline of populations and species require a
deep knowledge on their genetic structure. We used Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) to infer
the population structure of the highly threatened freshwater pearl mussel Margaritifera margaritifera
in the Iberian Peninsula. A total of 130 individuals were collected from 26 locations belonging to 16
basins. We obtained 31,692 SNPs through Genotyping by Sequencing (GBS) and used this dataset to
infer population structure. Genetic diversity given as observed heterozygosity was low. Pairwise FST
comparisons revealed low levels of genetic diferentiation among geographically close populations. Up
to 3 major genetic lineages were determined: Atlantic, Cantabrian and Douro. This structure suggests
a close co-evolutionary process with brown trout (Salmo trutta), the primordial fsh host of this
mussel in the studied area. Some sub-basins showed some genetic structuring, whereas in others no
intrapopulation diferentiation was found. Our results confrm that genetic conservation units do not
match individual basins, and that knowledge about the genetic structure is necessary before planning
recovery plans that may involve relocation or restocking. The same reasoning should be applied
to strictly freshwater species that are sessile or have restricted dispersal abilities and are currently
imperiled worldwide.Instituto para a Conservação da Natureza - ICNF; Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia - FCT; SELFLOWinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Psychometric evaluation of Persian version of Diabetes Acceptance Scale (DAS)
Background: Acceptance of diabetes is a psychological adaptation to the potential limitations of the disease. Poor
acceptance of diabetes impairs efective self-management of diabetes, leading to worsening metabolic control. This
study aimed at determining the psychometric properties of the Persian version of the Diabetes Acceptance Scale.
Methods: This cross-sectional methodological study was performed on diabetic patients in Iran in 2021. The ques tionnaire consisted of two parts: demographic characteristics and Diabetes Acceptance Scale. The questionnaire
was translated into Persian through the forward–backward translation method. The face validity and content validity
were performed qualitatively and quantitatively. Exploratory (n=200) and confrmatory (n=200) factor analysis were
performed to evaluate the validity of the structure. Internal consistency and temporal stability were estimated to
determine reliability.
Results: Exploratory factor analysis on the polychoric correlation matrix obtained three factors: Rational dealing,
Resentment and Avoidance, which explained 68.8% of the total DAS variance. Confrmatory factor analysis showed
that the 3-fractor model had a good ft to a second independent data set. Finally, Ordinal Cronbach’s alpha coefcient
was 0.96, 0.94 and 0.93, respectively for the Rational dealing, Resentment, and Avoidance factor. Also, using intraclass
correlation coefcient, the stability of the instrument was 0.97.
Conclusion: Based on the fndings of this study, the Persian version of DAS has sufcient validity and reliability to
measure the admission of Iranian diabetic patientsinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Emotion regulation and job satisfaction levels of employees working in family and non-family firms
The purpose of this paper is to explore the differences between employees working in
family and non-family firms regarding their emotion regulation and job satisfaction levels. Moreover,
focusing on family firms, we assess the relationship between the employees’ emotion regulation and
job satisfaction levels. The empirical evidence is provided by a sample of 178 Portuguese employees,
80 employees of family firms, and 98 non-family firms’ employees, who responded to a questionnaire
that included emotion regulation and job satisfaction measures. All respondents work in smalland
medium-sized private companies. Although the results do not confirm the first hypothesis,
suggesting that employees working on family firms show higher levels of emotion regulation than
those of non-family companies, the idea that employees of family companies show higher levels of job
satisfaction than employees of non-family companies is confirmed (i.e., Hypothesis 2). Moreover, the
results also support the third hypothesis, confirming that emotion regulation levels have a significant
and positive relationship with the job satisfaction levels of employees working in family firms. This
paper makes several contributions to the research literature by addressing two organizational aspects
still under-addressed in the comparison between family and non-family firms, while pursuing to offer
insights on the relationship between the emotion regulation and job satisfaction levels of employees

Should my username be easy to read? The influence of username fluency in online person perception
Master's dissertation presented at ISPA -
Instituto Universitário de Ciências Psicológicas,
Sociais e da Vida, for the degree of Master in Social
and Organizational Psychology.
as pessoas interagem afetam as primeiras impressões.
social online. Concluindo, a fluência promove benefícios independentemente do contexto
online, o que se aplica a diferentes traços de personalidadeNowadays, digital environments are a critical component of human interactions and a context
where first impressions are made with little information. In this dissertation, we address how
the fluency of the information (easy- or difficult-to-pronounce names) that is available about
a person, and the nature (social vs. professional) of online apps where people interact, affect
first impressions generated online. We also study if the first impression of different
personality traits are differently affected by the online social vs. professional contexts. Using
Instagram (social) and LinkedIn (professional) as the online contexts, a total of 212
Portuguese volunteers were asked to judge user profiles in two personality traits
(trustworthiness and competence) and questioned about their intention to interact with them.
Overall, results indicated that Instagram users, users with easy-to-pronounce usernames and
male users were perceived as having higher levels of trustworthiness and competence.
Participants also showed higher intention to interact with male profiles on LinkedIn. Finally,
the professional vs. social online contexts did not affect how differences in fluency impacted
the generation of impressions of trustworthiness and competence. In conclusion, fluency
yields benefits regardless of the app environment, and they apply to several trait
