Interference of difficulties in mindful acceptance and emotional intelligence, added to perseverative negative thinking, in emotional balance: A study with a low/high emotional symptomatology clinical sample.
Background: Mental health conditions, that exhibit high prevalence within the Portuguese population, can impact individuals' functioning and adversely affect their performance across various aspects of life. Thus, it is crucial to enhance our comprehension of the psychological processes that contribute to the onset or persistence of mental health problems. Recent studies have indicated that mindfulness, emotional intelligence, and perseverative negative thinking could potentially influence emotional symptomatology. However, their relationships and the extent of their association with psychopathology symptoms remain unclear. This study aimed to examine the relationship between mindfulness, perseverative negative thinking, emotional intelligence, sociodemographic factors, and the symptoms reported by patients attending a Portuguese mental health clinic. We expect that lower levels of mindfulness and emotional intelligence along with the presence of perseverative negative thinking would contribute to explain the emotional symptomatology experienced by these patients. Participants and procedure: The clinical sample included 390 individuals (M age = 34.33; SD = 9.99; 66.4% women) receiving cognitive-behavioral therapy at a Portuguese mental health clinic. They completed a self-report questionnaire with scales assessing mindfulness (Philadelphia Mindfulness Scale), perseverative negative thinking (Perseverative Thinking Questionnaire), emotional intelligence (Wong and Law Emotional Intelligence Scale), and emotional symptomatology (Brief Symptom Inventory). Results: The results of the logistic regression model revealed two important findings. Firstly, a negative association between mindfulness (specifically acceptance) and emotional intelligence (particularly the use of emotions and emotion regulation) with emotional symptoms among the patients. Secondly, higher levels of perseverative negative thinking (specifically interference and unproductivity) were linked to a greater manifestation of emotional symptoms. Conclusions: The incorporation of mindfulness, emotional regulation and management of perseverative negative thinking might be considered as contributes to improve results on clinical interventions for patients dealing with emotional symptomatology.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
"Menopause – Representantions, predictors and management of vasomotor symptoms, and impact on the couple’s sexual functions"
Tese de Doutoramento apresentada no Ispa - Instituto UniversitárioABSTRACT: The experience of menopause, despite being a natural physiological phenomenon and
transversal to all women, can facilitate the emergence of vasomotor symptoms (VMS) and
is influenced by representations, lifestyles, sociocultural context (among others) and,
therefore, idiosyncratic for each woman.
As such, the study of menopause representations proved to be relevant through: 1)
development of an instrument guided by the Common-Sense Model of Self-Regulation
(CSM-SR); 2) assessment of couples at middle-age, as well as the study of predictors of
menopause symptoms’ (MS) perceived severity and the application of an intervention
intended to modify these predictors and, thus, decrease their perceived severity.
Four studies were carried out (3 transversal and descriptive-observational and 1
longitudinal and quasi-experimental) with Portuguese women aged between 45 and 65
years. The status, the representations and MS were variables common in all studies.
The MenoSentations-Questionnaire, a culturally validated instrument, was developed to
measure representations of menopause in 309 Portuguese women. It was based on the 5
cognitive components of the CSM-SR (identity, consequences, control, duration and
cause), demonstrating adequate psychometric qualities. It proved to be useful both for the
assessment of (mis)adjusted menopausal beliefs as well as for delineating cognitivebehavioural interventions (CBI) aiming to improve the menopause experience (Chapter 2).
Knowing that genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM) and VMS (hot flushes and
night sweats) are the most prevalent and problematic MS in middle-aged women’s daily
life, and that the representations of menopause can determine the GSM’s management and,
therefore, impact on women’s and the couple sexual functioning, the middle-aged couples
were evaluated. We explored whether 28 Portuguese couples' representations of menopause
influenced their sexual functioning, concluding that only men's negative representations
impaired in their own sexual functioning (Chapter 3).
Subsequently, a structural model was developed to understand the predictors of MS’
perceived severity in 505 Portuguese women (with special emphasis on potentially
modifiable behaviours/aspects of diet and lifestyle). It was concluded that women with
obesity, iatrogenic menopause, psychological problem, alternative complementary
medicine’s users and frequent users of caffeinated beverages experience greater MS’
severity (Chapter 4). These results proved to be relevant to guide the intervention that
followed, in the course of this doctoral thesis, for MS’ attenuation.
Thus, in order to alleviate the problematic VMS’ experience in Portuguese women,
MENOS2 (group CBI, effective in VMS’s reduction in English women) was adapted to the
Portuguese language and culture (MENOS-PT), taking also in consideration the results
obtained in Chapter 2 and 4. The MENOS-PT was applied and their effectiveness was
tested in 8 Portuguese women, evaluating them in 4 times: T0–before MENOS-PT; T1–
after the implementation of MENOS-PT; T2–3 months later; T3–6 months later. The results
of this pilot study revealed the decrease of problematic VMS’ experience and frequency of
hot flushes over time (T0-T3); the frequency of night sweats decreased only between T0-
T2. Participants reported improvements in perception and perceived severity of MS,
decreased perception of negative consequences (T0-T3) and greater perception of
menopause’s control, awareness, and cause (T0-T2). Women showed improvements in
quality of life only at T1, with no improvements in the perceived positive consequences of
menopause, nor in the quality of sleep at any evaluation moment.
This set of studies aimed to contribute to a better understanding of menopause based on a
bio-psycho-socio-cultural perspective, namely in the measurement of menopause’s representations, its impact on sexual functioning, the determinants of exacerbation of MS’
severity, as well as on the CBI availability that demonstrated improvements in problematic
menopause experiences.
resultados obtidos no Capítulo 2 e 4.
As mulheres
Psychometric Properties of the Portuguese Version of The PERMA-Profiler
This study evaluates the psychometric properties of a Portuguese version of The PERMA Profiler in a sample of 1258 Portuguese adults (72.3% females) with a mean age of 36.74 years (SD = 11.313). The PERMA Profiler is a questionnaire that assesses the five dimensions of psychological flourishing, according to Seligman’s well-being theory. According to this theory, the well-being pillars known by the acronym PERMA are positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning, and accomplishment. Confirmatory factor analysis was conducted to test Seligman’s model. Results support a reasonable model fit for the five-factor model, but based on the results of bootstrap sample analysis the model was not confirmed. There is also a lack of discriminant validity between PERMA constructs and a lack of validity and reliability of engagement factor. Internal consistency was satisfactory for all five sub-scales, except for engagement. Concurrent validity was demonstrated through the strong and very strong correlations between the PERMA factors and Flourishing Scale. A Portuguese version of The PERMA Profiler is a new tool to assist researchers to refine the measurement and understanding of well-being in Portuguese cultures. Future recommendations and limitations are highlighted.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Contrasting patterns of population structure of Bulwer’s petrel (Bulweria bulwerii) between oceans revealed by statistical phylogeography
The patterns of population divergence of mid-latitude marine birds are impacted by only a few
biogeographic barriers to dispersal and the efect of intrinsic factors, such as fdelity to natal colonies
or wintering grounds, may become more conspicuous. Here we describe, for the frst time, the
phylogeographic patterns and historical demography of Bulwer’s petrel Bulweria bulwerii and provide
new insights regarding the drivers of species diversifcation in the marine environment. We sampled
Bulwer’s petrels from the main breeding colonies and used a statistical phylogeography approach
based on surveying nuclear and mitochondrial loci (~9100 bp) to study its mechanisms of global
diversifcation. We uncovered three highly diferentiated groups including the Western Pacifc, the
Central Pacifc and the Atlantic. The older divergence occurred within the Pacifc Ocean, ca. 850,000
ya, and since then the W Pacifc group has been evolving in isolation. Conversely, divergence between
the Central Pacifc and Atlantic populations occurred within the last 200,000 years. While the Isthmus
of Panama is important in restricting gene fow between oceans in Bulwer’s petrels, the deepest
phylogeographic break is within the Pacifc Ocean, where oceanographic barriers are key in driving and
maintaining the remarkable structure found in this highly mobile seabird. This is in contrast with the
Atlantic, where no structure was detected. Further data will provide insights regarding the extent of
lineage divergence of Bulwer’s petrels in the Western Pacifc.Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia - FCT; CESAMinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Maternal cancer and perception of child psychological adjustment: The role of mother’s anxiety, depression, and parenting stress
A mother’s cancer diagnosis may have consequences for all family members, particularly for children, since it makes a parent less physically and emotionally available, with effects on the relationship with the child and his/her development. The main aim of this study was to analyze children’s psychological adjustment in the context of maternal cancer by considering factors related to the child (i.e., age and sex), the mother (psychological adjustment), and cancer (i.e., time elapsed from the diagnosis and current oncological treatment). Self-report questionnaires investigating mothers’ parenting stress, depression, anxiety, and children’s emotional and behavioral problems were administered to 124 mothers (mean age = 44.52 years; SD = 7.22) diagnosed with cancer. A hierarchical regression analysis highlighted that time since diagnosis and mothers’ anxiety and parenting stress accounted for almost 44% of the variance of the children’s difficulties. Maternal depression, current oncological treatment, and the child’s age and sex were not statistically significant. Higher mothers’ parenting stress and anxiety and a longer time elapsed since the first diagnosis predicted higher levels of children’s emotional and behavioral problems. These findings highlight the need to identify precursors of childhood distress in the context of maternal cancer and to develop structured programs to support both mothers and children.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Testing motivational and self-regulatory mechanisms of action on device-measured physical activity in the context of a weight loss maintenance digital intervention: A secondary analysis of the NoHoW trial
Background: To date, few digital behavior change interventions for weight loss maintenance focusing on longterm physical activity promotion have used a sound intervention design grounded on a logic model underpinned by behavior change theories. The current study is a secondary analysis of the weight loss maintenance
NoHoW trial and investigated putative mediators of device-measured long-term physical activity levels (six to 12
months) in the context of a digital intervention.
Methods: A subsample of 766 participants (Age = 46.2 ± 11.4 years; 69.1% female; original NoHoW sample:
1627 participants) completed all questionnaires on motivational and self-regulatory variables and had all devicemeasured physical activity data available for zero, six and 12 months. We examined the direct and indirect
effects of Virtual Care Climate on post intervention changes in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity and
number of steps (six to 12 months) through changes in the theory-driven motivational and self-regulatory
mechanisms of action during the intervention period (zero to six months), as conceptualized in the logic model.
Results: Model 1 tested the mediation processes on Steps and presented a poor fit to the data. Model 2 tested
mediation processes on moderate-to-vigorous physical activity and presented poor fit to the data. Simplified
models were also tested considering the autonomous motivation and the controlled motivation variables independently. These changes yielded good results and both models presented very good fit to the data for both
outcome variables. Percentage of explained variance was negligible for all models. No direct or indirect effects
were found from Virtual Care Climate to long term change in outcomes. Indirect effects occurred only between
the sequential paths of the theory-driven mediators.
Conclusion: This was one of the first attempts to test a serial mediation model considering psychological
mechanisms of change and device-measured physical activity in a 12-month longitudinal trial. The model
explained a small proportion of variance in post intervention changes in physical activity. We found different
pathways of influence on theory-driven motivational and self-regulatory mechanisms but limited evidence that these constructs impacted on actual behavior change. New approaches to test these relationships are needed.
Challenges and several alternatives are discussed.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Deontic signs increase control monitoring: Evidence from a modified traffic flanker task
Deontic norms are expected to impose individuals’ control over their behavior. In this paper, we address such norms presented
in trafc signs and test their infuence over executive control functions. For Experiment 1, we develop a trafc fanker task
in which the typical neutral arrows are replaced with trafc prohibition/obligation signs. Experiment 2 isolated the deontic
aspect of the signs using simple arrows on red, blue, and green backgrounds and either primed them to be interpreted as trafc
signs or as elements of a gaming console controller. Results in both studies show evidence of controlling context interferences
more efciently when dealing with deontic (trafc) signs than with simple arrows (Experiment 1) or with similar perceptive
targets when primed with a deontic context than with a gaming context (Experiment 2). In both studies, obligation/blue signs
mitigate fanker efects less than prohibition/red signs. Stimuli color afects the alertness of the cognitive system, with the
color red being, by itself, a cue for increased control. Based on temporal analysis, we further discuss these results as evidence
of an increase in proactive control that aims to prevent the occurrence of undesirable infuence.
apresentado no ISPA – Instituto
This report focuses on reflecting on the organization of the educational
environment and the role of the educator in fostering children's autonomy in early
childhood education settings. The aim is to build a comprehensive understanding based
on the literature regarding the practices and strategies that promote this competence.
A study was conducted in a kindergarten classroom with a diverse group of 20
children aged 4-5 years and their respective educator. Two guiding axes of analysis were
defined throughout this study: (1) Behaviors of the kindergarten teacher that promote
children's autonomy, and (2) Characteristics of the organizational aspects of the
educational environment that foster autonomy.
This research employed a qualitative methodology, utilizing techniques and
instruments such as observation supported by field notes, as well as an interview
conducted with the cooperating teacher.
The findings revealed the significance of promoting autonomy in children from
an early age. It emphasized that this competence is enhanced when educators motivate
and encourage children to take initiative, while providing assistance and support for their
choices. These principles should be integrated into the organization of the educational
environment, taking into consideration children's perspectives, and enabling them to
pursue their interests and make choices. These elements are central to the development
of autonomy. The study also concluded that the construction of children's autonomy relies
on the educator's beliefs, necessitating reflection, knowledge, and intentionality in their
educational practice to provide opportunities that value children's choices and
perspectives
Abstract: Physical punishment is the use of physical force to cause to body pain or discomfort, to
correct children’s misbehaviour (Gershoff, 2008) and negatively impacts children’s development
(Gershoff, 2002). To overcome limitations in the current state-of-art knowledge in Portugal, this study
aimed to describe the maternal reports about the use of different physical punishment practices in the
last year and to analyse the predictive role of child, maternal and household characteristics in the use
of different physical punishment practices in the last year. A total of 289 Portuguese mothers of children
aged 5 to 14 years completed the Escala de Crenças sobre a Punição Física (Machado et al., 2003)
and the Inventário de Práticas Educativas Parentais (Machado et al., 2015). According to results,
spanking child at the buttocks with the hand and slapping child’s hand, arm, or leg were the most
reported punishment practices. Maternal tolerance toward physical punishment was the strongest and
most consistent predictor of spanking child at the buttocks with the hand and slapping child’s hand,
arm, or leg during the last year. Future cross-cultural studies may continue to explore the most used
physical punishment practices and the characteristics that predict their use.

o 3º ciclo do ensino regular.
Emotional Availability of Parents (LEAP), Emotion Regulation Questionnaire for Children and
Adolescents (ERQ-CA) e Kidscreen-27.
As raparigas apresentam menos
expressiva (no contexto familiar) e a reavaliação cognitiva (no contexto escolar) mediaram
adolescentes.ABSTRACT: This study aimed to explore the perception of children related to the emotional
(un)availability of parents and the understanding associated with the use of emotion regulation
strategies in young adolescents, with results associated with the subjective multidimensionality
of quality of life related to health, and in different contexts. Considering that the study on youth
quality of life related to health and positive affect needs further study and investigation.
Specifically, it was intended to understand whether emotional regulation helps to explain the
association between the emotional (un)availability of parents perceived by children and their
quality of life for health. The presented study included 202 adolescents aged between 12 and
17, attending the 3rd cycle of regular education. These answered the following self-report
scales: Lum Emotional Availability of Parents (LEAP), Emotion Regulation Questionnaire for
Children and Adolescents (ERQ-CA) and Kidscreen-27. It was found that girls show more
expressive suppression at home compared to boys. Children of married/cohabiting parents
suppress their emotions at home less and have a better quality of life compared to children of
divorced/separated parents. Girls have less perception of parents' emotional availability
compared to boys, and boys have a better quality of life for health than girls. It was also found
that there are no differences in emotional regulation depending on the context. Finally, the
results indicated that perceived emotional availability is positively associated with a better
quality of life related to health. Furthermore, it was found that expressive suppression (in the
family context) and cognitive reappraisal (in the school context) partially mediated this
association. These results have important implications for both practice and research,
highlighting the importance of parents' emotional availability and the role of emotional
regulation in improving adolescents' health-related quality of life
