This pedagogical case study explores a commercial negotiation between GMED, a leading medical technology company, and HSP, a prominent private healthcare group in Portugal. The case illustrates the transition from a transactional, reactive maintenance model based on On Demand Services (ODS) to a long-term Technical Assistance Contract (CAT), emphasizing the strategic shift towards a value-based, integrative negotiation approach.
The negotiation was triggered by a critical equipment failure at HSP, creating an opportunity for GMED to present a high-value proposal combining immediate repair with a structured service agreement. Over five months and three negotiation rounds, both parties engaged in a dynamic process involving tactical concessions, mutual trust-building, and the application of key negotiation tools such as BATNA, ZOPA, and interest-based bargaining.
Through real data and business scenarios, the case provides a platform for discussing the creation of mutual value, negotiation power asymmetries, and strategies for long-term client retention in B2B service sales. It also highlights the strategic relevance of service contracts in the healthcare industry and their impact on operational continuity, cost predictability, and competitive advantage.
Designed for graduate-level students and professionals in management and commercial negotiation, this case encourages analytical thinking, strategic planning, and effective communication skills by simulating a real-life negotiation process with high financial and operational stakes
Exploring the cultural and attitudinal factors contributing to acceptance of intimate partner violence against women in Kazakhstan: A mixed-methods study examining the role of sexism and culture of honour
Intimate partner violence against women remains a critical issue, particularly in Kazakhstan,
which stands among the highest in Asia for tolerating such violence. Employing a mixedmethods approach, this study, investigated the cultural and attitudinal factors underlying the
acceptance of intimate partner violence against women in Kazakhstan. Thematic analyses
revealed prevalent themes highlighting the dominance of hostile sexism, perpetuation of
patriarchal mentalities and gender role stereotypes, as well as the pervasive influence of honour
culture, specifically “uyat”, contributing to societal acceptance of violence against women.
Additionally, the quantitative phase revealed significant positive associations between hostile
sexism and the acceptance of intimate partner violence. Notably, mediation analysis identified
honour culture as a competitive mediator for the overall sample as well as Kazakh and Russian
speakers. This points to the possible existence of an omitted second mediator which should be
explored in future research. The study underscored the interplay of these factors, shedding light
on their collective impact on societal attitudes and justifications for intimate partner violence
against women in Kazakhstan. These findings could be valuable for evidence-based violence
prevention programs.
A typology of peer-reviewers: Role, characteristics, and egoistic and altruistic perspectives
There is a growing amount of research on peer reviewing, not only to obtain a better understanding of it as a key pillar of contemporary science but also because the peer review system is increasingly perceived to be in a state of crisis. Based on a sample of researchers in a variety of scientific fields and geographical locations, this study contributes to a better understanding of who engages in peer reviewing activities. It uses three measures of peer reviewing activity (i.e. number of peer reviews, length of the referee report, and review-to-publication ratio) to create a typology of peer review engagement, and identifies three disproportionally sized clusters of peer review engagement: selfish reviewers (accounting for almost two-thirds of the sample), diligent referees (∼30%), and prolific reviewers (<4%). This typology also permits the identification of a specialization of peer reviewing based on the two main purposes of peer reviewing. Specifically, diligent referees focus on development and improvement, and prolific reviewers focus on gatekeeping and quality control. Demographic (age, gender), professional (academic inbreeding), organizational (resources), and dimensions of the strategic research agendas of researchers characterize all three of the clusters, often in diverse manners. The findings underline a concerning prevalence of an egotistical perspective, even among researchers who engage in peer reviewing.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
A cross-cultural perspective about the Ripple effect of corporate social responsibility on internal brand commitment through corporate reputation
This study, grounded in social identity theory, aimed to examine the mediating role of corporate reputation in the relationship between corporate social responsibility (CSR) and internal brand commitment. Additionally, it sought to investigate whether individualistic versus collectivistic cultural orientations moderate this indirect relationship. This research consisted of two complementary studies. The first study employed a qualitative approach, utilizing interviews to explore employees' perceptions of CSR practices (N = 14). The second study adopted a quantitative approach, using an online survey to collect data from 506 participants distributed across Portugal (a collectivistic culture) and France, Italy, and Spain (characterized as individualistic cultures). The findings from the first study revealed that employees perceive CSR practices as enhancing an organization's reputation. Additionally, these practices are seen as positively influencing employees' performance, job satisfaction, and commitment by boosting their morale and strengthening their sense of organizational identification. The results from the second study showed that CSR improved employees' internal brand commitment through increases in corporate reputation. It also demonstrated that the degree of individualism or collectivism affected how employees perceived the organization's reputation and influenced their internal brand commitment. Finally, it was also shown that national culture moderated the indirect effect of CSR on internal brand commitment through corporate reputation, in such a way, that this relationship was stronger in collectivistic countries (versus individualistic). The present study contributes to reinforcing the importance of adapting CSR initiatives to the national culture, as a strategy to improve employees' commitment toward their brand.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
Fractal decision-making: Leading in a fragmented and complex world
This thesis discusses Fractal Decision-Making, a model that may enhance and enrich our
understanding of management and ethical leadership while providing a comprehensive
foundation for academic inquiry. Drawing from management theory, moral philosophy,
systems theory, and fractal organization theory, this model demonstrates its adaptability and
relevance across various cultural and business contexts. The thesis showcases empirical
evidence from organizations like Buurtzorg, FAVI, and NRG Flow B.V., offering valuable
insights and suggesting avenues for future research, making it a critical resource for
scholars.
The global business environment today is strangely enough both fragmented and
interconnected, marked by regional distinctions and global networks. Traditional, centralized
decision-making frameworks struggle to adapt swiftly to local conditions or address broader
impacts across these interconnected markets. Fractal Decision-Making offers a solution by
integrating decentralized decision-making with ethical governance, promoting
responsiveness to local needs while maintaining alignment with global objectives.
Fractal principles, known for their self-similarity and scalability, provide insights into
organizational structures that emphasize adaptability and ethical decision-making. By
applying fractal geometry, as seen in natural phenomena like coastlines and galaxies,
organizations can build resilient, agile systems. These ideas converge with Teal
organizational principles, which prioritize self-management, wholeness, and evolutionary
purpose, creating a shift from hierarchical to network-based structures.
The effectiveness of Fractal Decision-Making is supported by case studies from Buurtzorg,
FAVI, and NRG Flow B.V., which demonstrate improved performance and employee
satisfaction through decentralized decision-making. These organizations embody the valuesdriven
culture seen in Teal organizations, where ethical considerations guide decisionmaking.
However, the thesis also explores possible pitfalls, particularly through the
experience of NRG Flow B.V., raising important questions about the limitations of
decentralization.
Finally, this research opens the door to further exploration of how AI and blockchain may
enhance or challenge fractal organizations. While these technologies offer potential for
greater scalability and transparency, they also introduce ethical dilemmas that require careful
examination, leaving open the question of how organizations will balance these new tools
with ethical governance
The hotel sector in Portugal is a key pillar in the national economy, contributing significantly to economic growth and job creation. In an increasingly competitive context and rapid technological evolutions, innovation and increased competitiveness have become imperative for hotel companies that aspire to stay relevant and thrive. It is in this scenario that government support programs, such as Portugal 20/30, play a crucial role in providing incentives and resources to boost the development and modernization of the sector.
This research focused on the use of Portugal 20/30 in the hotel sector, with a special focus on promoting innovation and business competitiveness. Through three case studies in portuguese hotel companies, it was intended to understand the impact of funds on investment strategies, innovation processes and the competitive positioning of organizations. The research highlights the relevance of non-reimbursable funds in the implementation of productive innovation projects and in the improvement of operational efficiency.
However, significant difficulties were identified, such as excessive bureaucracy associated with application processes and the exclusion of large companies in the early stages of the programs. Based on these conclusions, suggestions were made to improve the effectiveness of incentive programs, aiming to increase accessibility, reduce bureaucracy and promote collaboration between companies of different sizes and sectors.
It was concluded that, although the funds have a positive impact on the operations and competitiveness of hotel companies, there is room to improve the structure and criteria of the support programs, in order to maximize their benefits for the sector

This paper analyzes the impact of the housing crisis in Portugal on access to Higher Education
(HE). In recent years, the country has been facing a housing crisis that has negatively affected
the lives of many citizens. Due to the high purchase and rental prices of real estate, many people
have difficulty finding a suitable place to live, which has negative implications in different
areas, namely access to education. This study aims to understand how high housing costs
influence the access and persistence of young students in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs).
Many students are forced to move to urban areas due to the concentration of HEIs and the
variety of courses offered. However, the disproportionate increase in housing prices in relation
to average household income has created significant barriers for students. This study seeks to
complement the literature by analyzing how the housing crisis directly affects educational
decisions and equity in access to HE. In addition, it investigates the opportunity costs faced by
families and the strategies adopted to enable students to continue their studies. To this end, a
survey was conducted using online questionnaires, in which participants were asked about their
housing conditions and how the housing crisis influenced their opportunities to access higher
education. The results indicate that the housing crisis has a significant impact on access to
higher education for young people from regions outside large cities
Lived experiences of youth with dwarfism in Ghana
This study explores the lived experiences of youths with dwarfism in Ghana, focusing on the
challenges they face, the coping strategies they employ, the social support services available to
them, and the influence of Ghanaian cultural norms on their identities. The objective of this study
is to investigate the lived experiences of youths with dwarfism in Ghana, with a specific focus on
understanding the challenges they encounter and identifying potential avenues for support and
intervention. A qualitative research design was employed, utilizing semi-structured interviews with
10 youths with dwarfism and two social service providers. The Snowball Effect sampling
technique was used to identify participants, and data were collected through audio-recorded
interviews conducted in locations convenient to the participants. Data analysis involved
transcription of audio files, followed by coding and thematic analysis using NVivo software. The
findings of the study revealed multifaceted challenges faced by youths with dwarfism in Ghana,
including societal stigma, discrimination, and practical barriers to education and employment.
Despite these challenges, participants exhibited resilience and resourcefulness through their
coping strategies and utilization of social support networks. The study also highlighted the
influence of Ghanaian cultural norms on shaping the identities of individuals with dwarfism,
emphasizing the need for awareness and advocacy to combat societal biases. Based on the findings,
it is recommended that policymakers and practitioners prioritize initiatives aimed at promoting
awareness, inclusivity, and advocacy to address societal barriers faced by youths with dwarfism.
Additionally, targeted interventions should be developed to improve access to education,
employment, and social services for individuals with dwarfism in Ghan
