In fulfillment of the requirements for the Supervised Teaching Practice II Curricular Unit, which is a component of the second year of the Master's Degree in Teaching, this Final Report has been prepared. The degree program in question is the first cycle of basic education and mathematics and natural sciences in the second cycle of basic education. The initial section of the report provides a concise overview of the pedagogical approaches that have been developed in the first and second cycles of basic education. It also presents a critical and reflective comparison of these two practices. The second part of the report presents the research component, which is based on an investigation into the impact of establishing mathematical connections on the learning of first-grade students. In this regard, research questions were formulated as follows: (a) What is the contribution of establishing mathematical connections to the consolidation of previously taught content? (b) In what ways do mathematical connections facilitate the acquisition of new mathematical knowledge? The study is qualitative in nature, and for the purposes of data collection, direct participant observation, photographic records, field notes, and student productions were employed. The data were subjected to content analysis. To assess the students' knowledge before and after the research, a pre-test and a post-test were developed, respectively. Furthermore, four activities were devised to address the objectives assessed in the pre-test and post-test. The findings indicate that students demonstrated enhanced learning outcomes when mathematical connections were established, encompassing both mathematical content and its interrelationship with other domains, as well as its integration with real-world contexts. Additionally, the impact of fostering mathematical connections on the consolidation of existing knowledge and the acquisition of new concepts was discernible.N/

The internship took place at the Escola Profissional do Balleteatro, in Porto, for students in the 11th year of the Professional Contemporary Dance Interpreter Course, during the 2022/2023 academic year. The pedagogical action was based on various strategies and ideas from Contemporary Dance, specifically Improvisation, drawing on the review of literature on this subject. The intervention was deepened, in the dance class, by applying the Continuous Feed In improvisation format mentioned by the authors Lynne Anne Blom and L. Tarin Chaplin, and in a co-teaching practice with musicians who provided a pedagogical experience using live music. The Action Research methodology guided our theoretical-practical approach, allowing us, through data collection, to adapt, improve and transform our pedagogical intervention in view of the progress of our research and the artistic, creative and technical needs of the 11th grade students. The data collected through the logbook, audiovisual recordings and questionnaires served to amplify our perception of the methodologies and strategies used in class and their impact on the students. From the analysis and final reflection, we realized that the structure of our class and the methodologies and tools applied can be replicated in other contexts and in our future teaching practices. We concluded by noting positive results in the students' learning in Contemporary Dance, namely in the development of a more investigative and creative relationship with movement improvisation, and a more conscious and profound relationship with Music and live music. We also suggest, briefly, a curricular reflection on the Referential of Training of the Professional Course of Contemporary Dance Interpreter, with regard to the insertion of a new Short Duration Training Unit (UFCD) concerning Music.N/

We present the case of a 78-year-old male with a history of ischemic stroke and multiple comorbidities, who was underweight and weakened. Over a 10-month follow-up period, a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube was placed, and nutritional management was carried out based on biochemical and nutritional status assessments. Anthropometric and blood biochemical parameters confirmed the need to adjust protein and energy intake to the patient's requirements. Personalized nutritional intervention, including a caloric surplus and dietary adjustments, resulted in weight gain, improved muscle mass, and biochemical blood parameters. This case report highlights the comprehensive nutritional management of a post-stroke patient to improve outcomes and quality of life.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Unraveling the root causes of faults in mobile communicatios: A comparative analysis of diferente model explainability techniques

    No full text
The escalating demand and complexity of monitoring services handled by Network Operations Centers (NOCs) have led Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to prioritize automated solutions for network fault detection and diagnosis. Consequently, various Machine Learning (ML)-based Root Cause Analysis (RCA) systems have been developed, however their lack of explainability poses a challenge due to the predominantly black-box nature of ML models. This paper addresses this issue by presenting a supervised clustering methodology capable of integrating both glass-box and black-box models, the latter complemented by post-hoc explainability techniques. While black-box models excel in predictive capabilities, necessitating post-hoc techniques for explainability, glass-box models prioritize transparent decision-making, fostering a clearer understanding of the model’s behavior. This work delineates a methodology for performing RCA of faults in the User Downlink (DL) Average Throughput Key Performance Indicator (KPI), simultaneously comparing the performance of black-box models (Light Gradient-Boosting Machine (LightGBM) and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost)) with glass-box models (Logistic Regression (LR) and Explainable Boosting Machine (EBM)). Results revealed that the LightGBM black-box algorithm coupled with the SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) method demonstrated superior performance in fault detection and diagnosis, without compromising the overall explainability. Consequently, it was possible to identify faults related to radio conditions, low network usage in specific user groups, low network capacity, and mobility issues. The paper concludes with practical mitigation strategies for each identified fault cluster. The escalating demand and complexity of monitoring services handled by Network Operations Centers (NOCs) have led Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to prioritize automated solutions for network fault detection and diagnosis. This work was supported by the project “Youth Breakdown in the post-COVID era and their Vaccination Intention” (IPL/2021/Vaccin2You(th)_ESTeSL), funded by Instituto Politécnico de Lisboa, Portugal. The H&TRC authors also acknowledge FCT/MCTES for the funding by UIDP/05608/2020, and UIDB/05608/2020.Social distancing and the use of masks are crucial to prevent the spread of SARS-COV-2. Knowledge of the determinants of this behavior is essential to promote effective communication with the public in future public health crises that require mass public compliance with preventive behaviors. This systematic review focused on scientific evidence related to cognitive factors that underlie young adults’ intention to adhere to preventive social behavior (distancing and/or the use of facial masks) against COVID-19. A systematic literature search on the electronic databases, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and EBSCO was performed in December 2022 according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis guidelines. The PEO (Population: young adults, Exposure: COVID-19, and Outcome: cognitive factors that underlie the intention of young adults to adhere to social distancing and/or the use of facial masks) was developed to identify search terms and inclusion/exclusion criteria. Eight studies met the eligibility criteria. None of the studies were seriously flawed according to the quality assessment, and they were considered to have a low risk of bias for selection. Several cognitive determinants emerged in the analysis. For social distancing and the use of masks, the most relevant factors related to adherence include risk perception and perceived severity, the moral value of fairness, social responsibility, trust in the government, respect for authority, and the quality of institutional communication. Adherence to social distancing was found related to self-efficacy. These results reinforce social cognitive models showing the relevance of cognitions to adherence behavior and highlight the responsibility of official institutions in the development of contexts and in adapting the communication for the effective promotion of adherence to the recommendations they launch.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

GILM's multistakeholder model for media literacy in Portugal

    No full text
In Portugal, the Informal Group on Media Literacy (GILM) represents a unique multistakeholder approach to fostering media literacy. For over 15 years, GILM has brought together an alliance of stakeholders from diverse sectors—including education, regulation, and media—to collectively enhance the public's media literacy. This session will delve into GILM's collaborative workings, emphasizing its strategy of pooling resources and expertise to promote media literacy across all societal strata. We will unpack how GILM operates without a centralized hierarchy, how it upholds the autonomy of its members, and how it fosters regular interaction through monthly meetings and working groups. There will be a discussion about how it responds to the challenges that media literacy assumes today as one of the key literacies for empowering all citizens. Ethics and technology, the fight against online misinformation and hate speech, algorithms and social media, digital transformation and public policies have been some of the issues brought to the public debate by GILM. The session will also reflect on GILM's notable initiatives like the Literacy, Media and Citizenship Congress and "7 Days with the Media," and discuss the group’s role on the new strategy for a National Media Literacy Plan.N/

The aim of this dissertation is to distinguish between the tax and accounting treatment of intangible assets in the Portuguese tax system. Intangible assets have become very important for companies today, playing a crucial role in terms of innovation, economic growth and value creation. A few years ago, companies' wealth was mainly associated with tangible assets. Today, value creation is strongly linked to the identification of intangible assets, such as software, patents, intellectual property, and brands, among others. Goodwill is particularly important in the assets of many companies. The introduction of the Accounting Standards by the IASB brought with it new measurement rules for intangible assets, representing a departure from the rules of the Accounting Standardization System. In the tax field, the treatment of these assets is also defined, often diverging from the accounting standards. Special attention should be paid to these points, which are still the subject of some disagreement and a topic that is constantly under discussion. As for the methodology, the accounting and tax regime for intangible assets was analysed, leading to an analysis of the Spanish and Irish tax system, as well as a case law analysis in Portugal. The jurisprudential analysis includes the analysis of cases from the Administrative Arbitration Center to identify defects and irregularities on the part of taxpayers and the Tax Authority, related to the subject under study.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Como resultado desta caracterização foram desenvolvidos dois artigos científicos: (1) “Initial medication adherence in newly diagnosed glaucoma patients: three adherence measures” no International Journal of Ophthalmology; (2) “Persistence with anti-glaucoma therapy in newly diagnosed patients in Primary Health Care Units of Lisbon and Tagus Valley Region, Portugal” submetido no European Journal of Ophthalmology. This project aims to characterize the initial adherence and persistence to therapy in a cohort of new users of anti-glaucoma medication carried out in primary health care (PHC) units of Lisbon and Tagus Valley Region. Through a retrospective observational approach, the Information System of the Lisbon and Tagus Valley Region Health Administration (SIARS) was used for consultation of medication prescription registration and collection records in the community pharmacies in Lisbon and Tagus Valley Region. As a result of this characterization, two scientific articles were developed: (1) “Initial medication adherence in newly diagnosed glaucoma patients: three adherence measures” in the International Journal of Ophthalmology; (2) “Persistence with anti-glaucoma therapy in newly diagnosed patients in Primary Health Care Units of Lisbon and Tagus Valley Region, Portugal” submitted on European Journal of Ophthalmology. Initial adherence to therapy: A total of 3548 new glaucoma patients were included in this study, of which 1133 (31,9%) patients were classified as non-adherent. Additionally, 277 (11,5%) patients discontinued their treatment early, acquiring only their first prescription. Combining the two previous measures the initial non-adherence was 39.7%. Persistence to therapy: During a 3-year time period, 2138 new anti-glaucoma drug users were studied. The global persistence rate decreased from 91.9% in the first year to 67,7% in the third year. Even with better persistence values, the older age groups decreased from 92.7% in the first year to 70.4% in the third year and participants with monotherapy maintained greater persistence (1st year with 92,4% Vs 3rd year with 70,2%). This project suggests the need to implement individual or group strategies that enable patients with glaucoma to correctly perform their treatment and provide the importance and necessity of monitoring patients over the years.N/
