Microstructural characterization and corrosion-resistance behavior of friction stir-welded A390/10 wt% SiC composites-AA2024 Al alloy joints

    No full text
This study examined the effect of traverse speed on the mechanical properties, corrosion-resistance behavior, and microstructure of friction stir-welded A390/10 wt% SiC composites AA2024 Al alloy joints. The laminar flow of both materials was found to diminish in the stir zone (SZ) when the traverse speed of the tool increased from 40 to 80 mm/min, lowering their mixing rate. Large aspect ratio Si particles are broken by the tool pin-induced applied plastic strain, which turns them into refined equiaxed particles. Their aspect ratio remains unchanged in the SZ, despite their decreasing size. SiC and Si particles progressively come into view when moving from the AA2024 alloy’s SZ to the composite workpieces. These changes happen abruptly as traverse speed increases due to the lack of an interfacial layer structure. The advancing side (AS)’s SZ grain size drops from 4.2 ± 0.3 μm to 1.2 ± 0.2 μm as the traverse speed drops from 80 to 40 mm/min. Increased traverse speed from 40 to 80 mm/min will result in a 5.8% decrease in elongation percentage (EP) and 8.4%, 36%, and 10.3% increases in the ultimate tensile strength (UTS), corrosion resistance, and yield strength, respectively.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

This report was developed as part of the Supervised Teaching Practice II curricular unit, integrated into the Master's Degree in Teaching 1st Cycle of Basic Education (CEB) and Portuguese and History and Geography of Portugal in the 2nd CEB, at the Lisbon School of Education. The report is organized into two distinct parts: (i) characterisation and analysis of the teaching practice developed in the 1st and 2nd Cycles of Basic Education; and (ii) presentation and exploration of the study carried out. The study, entitled Promoting reading habits: the role of literature for children and young people, justifies itself after the students' lack of reading habits was realised, which inevitably made it necessary to understand the impact of the students' interests on their reading habits, giving rise to the problem question: How can the students' interests promote reading habits? Based on this problem, the aim is to: (a) characterise the reading habits of a 2nd cycle primary school class; (b) identify the strategies that stimulate reading habits in childhood and youth; (c) analyse the changes in reading habits following the implementation of reading motivation strategies. . This study was carried out in accordance with the principles of action research, using quantitative and qualitative data collection techniques. During the course of the study, we also carried out participant and non-participant observation, as well as analysing the students' productions. The results showed that most of the students considered themselves to have reading habits. The strategies and activities implemented, based on their interests, proved to have a positive impact on promoting reading habits

Developed within the scope of the Master’s Degree in Teaching for the 1st Cycle of Basic Education and Portuguese and History and Geography of Portugal for the 2nd Cycle of Basic Education, this Supervised Teaching Practice II report emerged from the analysis and reflection of our experience as a student and from the observation of the pedagogical relationship established between a teacher and her students in a 3rd grade class. This report is divided in two parts: a first part that describes and reflects on the pedagogical practice developed in the 1st and 2nd Cycles; a second part that encompasses a study centered around the theme “The pedagogical relationship as fundamental part of the teachinglearning process”, that tried to answer the following question: “What is the perception of students and teacher about the pedagogical relationship established in the classroom e about its influence in the teaching-learning process?”. Regarding methodology, this study fits in the qualitative paradigm, namely the Case Study. In terms of the techniques and instruments of data collection, we opted to conduct a semi structured interview with the class’s head teacher and to apply a questionnaire to the students. According to the results, it is possible to verify that the pedagogical relationship developed in the classroom is considered fundamental in the teaching-learning process. The students value the teacher’s pedagogical, didactic, and relational skills. The teacher has a critical view of her role as a stimulator of the pedagogical relationship, since, despite giving more emphasis to the facilitating factors of the relationship, she also indicates the factor that might hamper it

This report is part of Supervised Professional Practice II course, included in the curriculum of the Master's Degree in Preschool Education at the School of Education of Lisbon the Polytechnic Institute of Lisbon , and its main purpose is to frame in a reflective, critical, and well-founded manner the intervention process developed as a trainee educator in a Kindergarten (JI) context, in the period from October 2nd, 2023, to January 31st, 2024, with a group of 24 children, aged between three and six years. The report also includes research developed around families' perceptions of the environment as an influencing factor on play in kindergarten (JI), outlined based on the performance of both parents and the children under study, through which I sought, more specifically: (i) to understand parents' perceptions of the environment (barriers and/or facilitators) in promoting play in Kindergarten; (ii) to understand how these same parental perceptions influence their behavior towards their child's playful action; and (iii) to analyze how parental behavior promotes and/or conditions the child's playful action, identifying possible parental barriers to play. Methodologically, the research assumes a qualitative nature, based on the case study method, using different data collection techniques and instruments, aimed at analyzing their content and subsequent triangulation, namely: direct participant and non-participant observation, observation records, a questionnaire survey, semi-structured interviews, and the "The Children’s Physical Environments Rating Scale" (CPERS5) (Moore, 2012). Through this study, the importance of experiences and outdoor living spaces for children's development and learning is understood, highlighting the role of adults as facilitators or conditioners of play, as well as the importance of the quality of the environment where these plays occur. The way adults act directly influences how children play, so it is crucial to make them aware of the risks that arise when children are deprived of the freedom to play outdoors and connect with nature. This report also describes the importance of training and experiences in PPS I and PPS II, related to Nursery and Kindergarten contexts respectively, in the construction of my professional identity.N/

This report, of a critical and reflective nature, emerges from the study carried out in Supervised Teaching Practice II, developed in a 2nd Cycle of Basic Education context. The study took place specifically within the scope of Exploratory Mathematics Teaching. It demonstrates a journey in which I played and assumed the role of teacher-trainee-researcher, reflects the learning and knowledge acquired during my academic training and reports on the research carried out. After characterizing the socio-educational context and getting to know all the participants in the action, it was important to carry out an investigation focused on small group tasks in the context of Exploratory Mathematics Teaching, with the aim of analyzing the relationship that students establish between themselves in these moments of discussion and sharing of ideas. This gave rise to the aim of the study: to understand the dynamics of group work in the context of Exploratory Mathematics Teaching. This is a qualitative investigation in which a variety of data collection techniques were applied: direct-selective-participant observation, interviews, and documentary collection. The activities implemented were based on the principles of constructivism, collaboration, and curriculum integration. In general, the students taking part in the study are very positive about the type of tasks and the learning achieved. This research has made it possible to understand that students associate collaboration and mutual help with group work, and that they can recognize that they don't always work in the same way, since they are influenced by their colleagues. The change in the composition of the working groups contributed to a change in the students' behavior, which consequently led to a change in group dynamics. Not everyone reacted in the same way, as some students showed improvement, greater concern and participation, while others behaved negatively, with more sloppiness and less participation and interaction with the group.N/

Predicting attachment in Portuguese infants born very or extremely preterm: Understanding the roles of infant regulatory behavior, maternal sensitivity, and risk factors

    No full text
A growing body of research shows that early attachment relationships are foundational for children's later developmental and psychosocial outcomes. However, findings are mixed regarding whether preterm birth predicts later attachment, but insecurity is generally more prevalent among infants at higher medical and/or social/familial risk. This longitudinal study aimed to identify specific relational, familial/demographic, and perinatal predictors of attachment in a sample of 63 Portuguese infants born very or extremely preterm (VEPT, <32 gestational weeks) and their mothers from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. One‐third of the mothers had social/family risk factors (e.g., single parent, immigrant, unemployed, low education, and/or low income). At 3 months (corrected age), dyads were observed during social interaction in the Face‐to‐Face Still‐Face paradigm (FFSF) and during free play. At 12 months, mother‐infant dyads were observed in Ainsworth's Strange Situation. Over half (58.7%) of the infants were classified as insecurely attached. Social‐Positive Oriented regulatory behavior pattern, higher maternal sensitivity, higher infant cooperation during free play, number of siblings and an absence of social/family risk factors were associated with attachment security. Perinatal variables were unrelated to attachment. Findings indicate that both relational and social contextual factors contribute to attachment in this biologically vulnerable sample. This study was funded by the Portuguese Fundaçãopara a Ciência e a Tecnologia FEDER (PTDC/MHC-PED/1424/2014)

As part of the Supervised Professional Practice II curricular unit, this report describes the work carried out over four months in a pre-school classroom with twenty-five children aged between two and six. The Socio-Educational Organization adopts the Pedagogy-in-Participation pedagogical approach, which, as the name suggests, takes great care with the participation and inclusion of children in their development and learning process. In this way, the report covers, on the one hand, the characterization of the socio-educational context, more specifically, the environment, the group of children, their families, the teaching team and the educational environment, as well as the reflective analysis of the internship intervention, namely my intentions for the action with the children, families and team, and the process of intervention of the practice. On the other hand, it also includes research focused on the voice of the child in Pedagogy-in-Participation, which allowed us to reflect on Transmissive Pedagogies vs. Participatory Pedagogies, to learn about Pedagogy-in-Participation, namely its principles and foundations, the importance of the educational environment, children as the center of action, planning as a dimension that promotes children's free choice and, finally, to analyze the profile of the educator and the educational team in this pedagogical approach. The objectives of the study led to a case study that allowed us to reflect on the value of participatory pedagogies, specifically Pedagogy-in-Participation, in promoting the autonomy of pre-school children, as well as an analysis of the profile of the educator and the educational team in valuing the children's voice and understanding the children's representations of the value of their choices in organizing their daily actions.N/

Effects of apigenin on gastric cancer cells

The H&TRC authors gratefully acknowledge the FCT/MCTES national support through the UIDB/05608/2020 and UIDP/05608/2020. This work was part of the IPL/2021/GATumor_ESTeSL project.Gastric Cancer (GC) is one of the most prevalent cancers worldwide. As the currently available therapeutic options are invasive, new and more benign options are being explored. One of which is Apigenin (Api), a natural flavonoid found in fruits and vegetables, such as celery, parsley, garlic, bell pepper, and chamomile tea. Api has known anti-inflammatory, -oxidant, and -proliferative properties in several diseases, and its potential as an anticancer compound has been explored. Here we systematize the available data regarding the effects of Api on GC cells, in terms of cell proliferation, apoptosis, Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection, and molecular targets. From the literature, it is possible to conclude that Api inhibits cell growth in a dose- and time-dependent manner, which is accompanied by the reduction of clone formation and induction of apoptosis. This occurs through the Akt/Bad/Bcl2/Bax axis that activates the mitochondrial pathway of apoptosis, resulting in the restriction of cell proliferation. Additionally, it seems that the anti-proliferative potential of Api on GC cells is particularly relevant in a more aggressive GC phenotype but can also affect normal gastric cells. This indicates that this flavonoid must be used in low-to-moderate doses to avoid side effects induced by disturbance of the normal epithelium. In H. Pylori-infected cells, the literature demonstrates that Api reduces inflammation by diminishing the levels of H. pylori colonization, preventing NF-kB activation, and diminishing the production of reactive oxygen specimens (ROS). Accordingly, GC Api seems to regulate different hallmarks of cancer, such as cell proliferation, apoptosis, cell migration, inflammation, and oxidative stress, demonstrating its potential as an anti-GC compound.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

It has been found in different occupational environments, such as sawmills and waste sorting. Its cryptic species show intrinsic resistance to several antifungals. Resistance in A. fumigatus is emerging due to selective pressure caused by the prolonged use of azoles. It is often associated with mutations in the Cyp51A gene. The fungal priority pathogens list (WHO), includes A. fumigatus with critical priority. Further analysis to identify potential resistance mechanisms and mutations is needed. Objective: This evaluation aims to offer a protocol for mutation detection in Aspergillus section Fumigati isolates. It will contribute to the development of guidance that can support future occupational exposure assessments.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
