There are several programs of explicit teaching of reading comprehension nationally and internationally. In this sense, the main objective of this study is to make known the existing reading comprehension programs internationally intended for students of the primary school, with aged between 6 and 10 years old.
In this study, 26 studies were analyzed and programs for reading comprehension were reviewed using the Scopus database and the Google search engine. Most of these programs include a control group and an experimental group and are aimed at students in the 4thgrade, being scarce for students in the 2nd grade. The activation of previous knowledge, the elaboration of summaries, the extraction of main ideas, the answer to questions and the finding of the meaning of unknown words are some of the cognitive strategies used in these programs. The use of the “annotations” reading strategy, the Cloze technique, the use of software, underlining the main ideas, using different symbols and colors to mark ideas are examples of activities used to improve reading comprehension. The results of this study indicate that students improve reading comprehension and the variables under study, when intervened with reading comprehension programs.
The absence of a concrete definition of the concept of operating lease in the regulations in place until 2019 – IAS 17 – gave institutions the possibility of recording these leases in their financial statements as costs arising from their normal activity.
To avoid distorting the financial statements, the IASB published IFRS 16, which came into effect on January 1st, 2019. This new standard aims to ensure that companies record operating leases in the same way they record financial leases. With the application of this standard companies: record in the Balance Sheet the assets on rights of use and lease liabilities; and in the Income Statement the amortization and interest, under the same headings.
The adoption of IFRS 16 led to major changes in all companies' financial statements, impacting practically all the indicators analyzed by managers, shareholders and analysts.
Following the application of the standard, this study aims to analyze the impacts of the application of IFRS 16 not only on the capital structure and financial balance, but also on the remaining ratios that are demonstrated to be impacted by the standard.
The case study of the Jerónimo Martins, SGPS, S.A. group will be presented, due to its size, international component and business characteristics. Similarly, data from Banco de Portugal for the sector will be used for the analysis.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Focusing on sustainability: a practical exercise in creativity
Our daily lives today are a kaleidoscope of circulating images. Souza and Zordan (2020) argue that the proliferation of photographic images causes a certain anesthesia of the senses that greatly influences creative output, making us more prone to act as task executors and less as creators. In a world where environmental consciousness is becoming increasingly urgent, it is imperative to employ creative and participatory approaches to engage individuals in a profound and meaningful manner. Pedagogical methods must therefore strive to incorporate innovative strategies that inspire and motivate young people to actively safeguard the environment.
This work presents the result of a creative experience that combines creative writing and photography, directing attention to the theme of sustainability. In the Creative Writing Workshop course, a challenge was proposed to first-year students of the Advertising and Marketing Undergraduate degree at the School of Communication and Media Studies of the Polytechnic Institute of Lisbon, with the university campus and its surroundings as the experiential field. This practical exercise was aligned with the 1st Sustainable Bootcamp of School of Communication and Media Studies (March 8,2024) under the theme of Circular Economy.
In this pedagogical approach, the teacher acts as a facilitator, drawing attention to the topic of sustainability and framing it in a familiar environment. By promoting a discovery-based method that encourages creativity and the exploration of diverse perspectives, hands-on learning is fostered. Working in small groups, students are encouraged to observe, listen and feel, reflecting and adapting their sensitive perception of the subject. The process entails spontaneous experimentation, guided by the teacher, ultimately culminating in purposeful rediscovery.
By encouraging creativity and active participation, these experiences offer an inspiring approach to engaging people in building a more balanced and healthy world.N/
cotadas no índice Euronext.
European entities are suffering the economic and social consequences of the war in Ukraine.
The disclosure of this event in the entities' annual report can be carried out in various ways and, consequently, there may be an attempt to obfuscate this event or emphasize positive news, using impression management (IM) strategies. This master thesis aims to assess the use of IM strategies in the context of publicizing the war in Ukraine, namely the manipulation of readability and thematic manipulation, based, in the latter case, on the analysis of both the tone and the feeling of the message. The data was obtained from the 2021 report and accounts of 212 entities listed on the Euronext index. It was possible to verify that most entities disclosed
the event assessment, mainly in voluntary disclosure components. However, one-third of those entities did not mention this event. The information presents reduced readability. In turn, the use of the thematic manipulation strategy was only partially verified, in that, although the neutral tone of the messages prevailed, the feelings expressed some uncertainty combined, however, with the demonstration that they are immune to the impacts of war. Differences depending on the country and sector of activity of the entities were occasionally identified. The
study contributes to the literature on IM by assessing a theme that is still little explored in studies in this area, also identifying the country and the sector of activity of the entities as potentially relevant analysis factors.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
The silent persuasion of fashion advertising
There is scientific evidence that the images broadcasted by the media have a negative effect on young people, particularly regarding their body image satisfaction (Grogan, 2021; Hurst et al., 2016). The consequences more frequently pointed out are body dissatisfaction and low self-esteem, besides the increased risks of depression and eating disorders (Brechan & Kvalem, 2015; Sohn, 2009; Holmström, 2004; Agliata & Tantleff-Dunn, 2004; Nezlek, 1999; Botta, 1995; Newman & Dodd, 1995; among others).
Because this is a complex phenomenon, we believe that a multitude of converging influences coexists. As underlined by Karazsia et al. (2013), it is likely that this phenomenon has a ‘constellation of variables’ moderating the relationship between the influence of society
and body dissatisfaction
Interpolating CTS specimens' mode I and II stress intensity factors using artificial neural networks
Fracture mechanics parameters, such as the stress intensity factor (SIF), are fundamental for the analysis of fracture, fatigue crack growth and crack paths. SIFs of a cracked body can be determined either experimentally or numerically. Analytical solutions of SIF are very useful, but their determination from discrete values can be extremely complex when there are many independent variables. In this paper, artificial neural networks (ANN) are proposed to predict mode I and II stress intensity factors in a CTS specimen under mixed mode loading conditions. Trained with numerical data, the performance of different network architectures and backpropagation algorithms was assessed. Using at least 10 neurons, in the hidden layers, made it possible for the designed solution to match the performance of analytical solutions. Increasing the number of neurons, allowed the model performance to improve up to 90%, when compared with previous analytical solutions. This increases the quality of fracture and fatigue studies done with the CTS sample
Freeze-in as a complementary process to freeza-out
There are many extensions of the Standard Model with a dark matter (DM) candidate obtained via the freeze-out mechanism. It can happen that after all experimental and theoretical constraints are taken into account, all parameter points have a relic density below the experimentally measured value. This means that the models solve only partially the DM problem, and at least one more candidate is needed. In this work we show that it is possible to further extend the model with a DM candidate obtained via the freeze-in mechanism to be in agreement with the relic density experimental measurement. Once the relic density problem is solved with this addition, new questions are raised. This new model with at least two DM candidates could have a freeze-out undetectable DM particle both in direct and indirect detection. This could happen if the freeze-out DM particle would have a very low density. Hence, a collider DM hint via excess in the missing energy with no correspondence in direct and indirect detection experiments, could signal the existence of a Feebly Interacting Massive Particle (FIMP). Conversely, if a DM particle is found and a particular model can explain all observables except the correct relic density, an extension with an extra FIMP would solve the problem. The freeze-in DM candidate, due to the small portal couplings, will not change the remaining phenomenology

This study aimed to assess the exposure of woodworking employees and customers to fungal load in 13 “Do It Yourself” (DIY) stores in the Lisbon metropolitan area (Portugal). An active sampling method (MAS-100 air sampler) was applied in different store areas, collecting 200L at a flow rate of 140 L/min. Regarding the occupational exposure assessment and considering the threshold suggested by the WHO of 150 CFU.m-3, the cutting area and the wood display surpass this limit in all the stores included. As for the threshold suggested by OSHA for fungi in non-industrial workplaces (1.0 x 101-1.0 x 104 CFU/m³), all the sampling sites from all the stores are within the limit, although indoor/outdoor ratio showed a higher indoor load compared to the outdoor counts in most of the stores. Regarding the Portuguese Indoor Air Quality legal framework, although the ratio I/O complied in two out of 13 stores, it was possible to identify one of these two toxigenic species with a quantitative cut-off above the legal frame. The results of this assessment raise health concerns regarding workers´ and customers ‘safety and support the need to implement measures to prevent exposure and protect workers' and customers' health. Additionally, it is known that wood dust and shavings from DIY stores may be used in animal bedding and agriculture, promoting fungal contamination in other settings. This highlights the need for a One Health approach.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Novel COVID-19 biomarkers identified through multi-omics data analysis: N-acetyl-4-O-acetylneuraminic acid, N-acetyl-L-alanine, N-acetyltriptophan, palmitoylcarnitine, and glycerol 1-myristate
This study aims to apply machine learning models to identify new biomarkers associated with the early diagnosis and prognosis of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Plasma and serum samples from COVID-19 patients (mild, moderate, and severe), patients with other pneumonia (but with negative COVID-19 RT-PCR), and healthy volunteers (control) from hospitals in four different countries (China, Spain, France, and Italy) were analyzed by GC-MS, LC-MS, and NMR. Machine learning models (PCA and PLS-DA) were developed to predict the diagnosis and prognosis of COVID-19 and identify biomarkers associated with these outcomes. A total of 1410 patient samples were analyzed. The PLS-DA model presented a diagnostic and prognostic accuracy of around 95% of all analyzed data. A total of 23 biomarkers (e.g., spermidine, taurine, L-aspartic, L-glutamic, L-phenylalanine and xanthine, ornithine, and ribothimidine) have been identified as being associated with the diagnosis and prognosis of COVID-19. Additionally, we also identified for the first time five new biomarkers (N-Acetyl-4-O-acetylneuraminic acid, N-Acetyl-L-Alanine, N-Acetyltriptophan, palmitoylcarnitine, and glycerol 1-myristate) that are also associated with the severity and diagnosis of COVID-19. These five new biomarkers were elevated in severe COVID-19 patients compared to patients with mild disease or healthy volunteers. The PLS-DA model was able to predict the diagnosis and prognosis of COVID-19 around 95%. Additionally, our investigation pinpointed five novel potential biomarkers linked to the diagnosis and prognosis of COVID-19: N-Acetyl-4-O-acetylneuraminic acid, N-Acetyl-L-Alanine, N-Acetyltriptophan, palmitoylcarnitine, and glycerol 1-myristate. These biomarkers exhibited heightened levels in severe COVID-19 patients compared to those with mild COVID-19 or healthy volunteers.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
