General and abdominal adiposity and hypertension in eight world regions: a pooled analysis of 837 population-based studies with 7·5 million participants
This study was funded by the UK Medical Research Council (grant number MR/V034057/1) and UK Research and Innovation (Innovate UK grant number 10103595, for participation in the OBCT consortium funded by the EU grant agreement 101080250).Background: Adiposity can be measured using BMI (which is based on weight and height) and indices of abdominal adiposity. We examined the association between BMI and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) within and across populations of different world regions. We quantified how well these two metrics discriminate between people with and without hypertension. Methods: We used data from studies carried out from 1990 to 2023 on BMI, WHtR, and hypertension in people aged 20-64 years in representative samples of the general population in eight world regions. We graphically compared the regional distributions of BMI and WHtR and calculated Pearson's correlation coefficients between BMI and WHtR within each region. We used mixed-effects linear regression to estimate the extent to which WHtR varies across regions at the same BMI. We graphically examined the prevalence of hypertension and the distribution of people who have hypertension both about BMI and WHtR, and we assessed how closely BMI and WHtR discriminate between participants with and without hypertension using C-statistic and net reclassification improvement (NRI). Findings: The correlation between BMI and WHtR ranged from 0·76 to 0·89 within different regions. After adjusting for age and BMI, mean WHtR was highest in South Asia for both sexes, followed by Latin America and the Caribbean and the region of central Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa. Mean WHtR was lowest in central and eastern Europe for both sexes, in the high-income western region for women, and Oceania for men. Conversely, to achieve an equivalent WHtR, the BMI of the population of South Asia would need to be, on average, 2·79 kg/m2 (95% CI 2·31-3·28) lower for women and 1·28 kg/m2 (1·02-1·54) lower for men than in the high-income western region. In every region, hypertension prevalence increased with both BMI and WHtR. Models with either of these two adiposity metrics had virtually identical C-statistics and NRIs for every region and sex, with C-statistics ranging from 0·72 to 0·81 and NRIs ranging from 0·34 to 0·57 in different region and sex combinations. When both BMI and WHtR were used, performance improved only slightly compared with using either adiposity measure alone. Interpretation: BMI can distinguish young and middle-aged adults with higher versus lower amounts of abdominal adiposity with moderate-to-high accuracy, and both BMI and WHtR distinguish people with or without hypertension. However, at the same BMI level, people in South Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, and the region of central Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa have higher WHtR than in the other regions.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Pretende, desta forma, acompanhar algumas tendências reconhecíveis na contemporaneidade, entre as quais: tendência para a desmaterialização (e consequente virtualização) cénica; virtualização do actor/performer e a integração de vários media não hierarquizados.ABSTRACT - At the end of this year, at the Chiado National Museum of Contemporary Art, postgraduate students in Media & Performance: Creative Technology Laboratory will present an installation where they worked and developed laboratory relationships between performance and the various disciplines they attended throughout their studies course.
This postgraduate course is part of the contemporary context of reciprocal rapprochement between the performance and performing arts and various technological and artistic disciplines. Despite being anchored in the theatrical/performative ecosystem, this postgraduate degree aims to accompany and promote new ways of conceiving the scenic device in 3 ways:
Seizure of a comprehensive set of technological tools; Laboratory artistic experimentation; Dialogue with creatives and thinkers who develop their work in related areas (technological, or artistic, or both).
In this way, it intends to follow some recognizable trends in contemporary times, including: tendency towards scenic dematerialization (and consequent virtualization); virtualization of the actor/performer and the integration of various non-hierarchical media.Financiado no âmbito do projeto MCLDI / Motion Capture - Laboratório Digital Interativo integrado na 8ª edição concurso de projetos investigação, desenvolvimento, inovação & criação artística (IDI&CA) Instituto Politécnico Lisboainfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
The mitigation of climate change with CCUS in Europe
Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS) is a technology highlighted as one of the tools in climate change mitigation and one of the ways to reach the goal of 1.5 set by the Paris Agreement. The European Commission (EC) developed this goal by creating and implementing the European Green Deal (EGD) – the European Union's (EU) environmental policy. This paper provides an analysis of environmental policies and an overview of crucial CCUS projects of selected member states based on a benchmarking analysis of 27+ UK member states. An overal review of a total of 28 countries was undertaken based on economic and environmental factors. Afterward, a benchmarking analysis was performed ranking the countries according to the TOP10 for the selected five categories: total net emissions with international transport, percentage share of the energy sector, percentage share of fossil fuels, percentage share of fossil fuels in the Gross Electricity Production (GEP), and numbers of CCUS projects. Subsequently, a detailed and comprehensive overview of 3 selected Member States was done, with a special focus on the national energy policy towards net-zero emission goals, the role of CCUS in domestic environmental policy, with current projects and facilities development. Finaly, this paper outlines how the EGD has reformed the national energy policies of selected member states, and what is the part of CCUS technology in the national efforts towards climate neutrality.N/
A conceptual framework for higher education institutions and the circular economy
The need to investigate the knowledge and participation of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) students in sustainability issues is crucial. The working group on Circular Economy and Waste Management from the Portuguese Sustainable Campus Network (RCS) is dedicated to investigating the attitudes and comprehension of HEIs students about the principles and practices of the Circular Economy (CE). This group intends to propose a conceptual framework for collecting data from students at various HEIs to contribute to the understanding of how these institutions adopt and implement CE principles, which significantly influence student perceptions and attitudes
Abstract: Mothers of infants with secure attachments present more positive representations of pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum, and the future. Indeed, most mothers vividly remember these experiences. These data indicate that the pre-, peri-, and postnatal periods profoundly impact the construction of parenthood and the mother-child relationship (it is the origin). However, we know little about this experience for fathers (men). How do first-time fathers view these three periods in fatherhood (pre-, peri-, and postnatal)? In this context, the present study aimed to describe and compare maternal and paternal representations. For this purpose, a semi-structured interview was conducted within the first 72 hours after the newborn's birth. The sample comprises 184 participants (92 mothers and 92 fathers of full-term newborns). The interview included the following topics: pregnancy, childbirth, birth, motherhood, temperament, and future development of their infant. The results indicated that fathers and mothers present similarities and differences regarding their representations of pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum. Regarding pregnancy, mothers and fathers expressed the desire for pregnancy, planned it, and felt supported throughout this journey. Fathers were calmer than mothers throughout the pregnancy regarding the baby's health. Concerning emotions and feelings towards the child, mothers identify love for the baby earlier, and both consider their newborn to have a calm temperament. More than mothers, fathers think that caring for their children after discharge will go well. Fathers were more optimistic about their competencies. The present study reinforces the importance of the paternal role, the need to involve both father and mother in pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum, and the need to offer them professional individual support
This report aims to document the intervention and research carried out within the scope of Supervised Professional Practice II (PPSII), integrated into the curriculum of the Master's in Pre-School Education (MEPE), through the explanation and reasoned reflection of my actions and strategies developed in a preschool context, during four months, with a group of 23 three-years-old children.
With the research title “The contribution of Multisensory Stories to the development and learning of a child with Special Health Needs”, I present the following research objectives: (i) understand the contribution of Multisensory Stories (MS) to the development and learning of a child with Special Health Needs (SHN); (ii) Understand the conceptions that the disciplinary team that monitors the child with SHN has about MS; (iii) Understand how a child with SHN gets involved in the MS.
The investigation was conducted through careful and detailed observation. To achieve this, it was necessary to carry out participant and non-participant observation, the recording and analysis of field notes, interviews with the disciplinary team (i.e. Educator, Education Assistant and Speech Therapist) and also document analysis.
The research results revealed that MS plays a fundamental role in the holistic development of children with SHN in the context of Kindergarten, as it promotes the development of the physical and psychomotor, socio-emotional and cognitive domains. In conclusion, the investigation highlights the appreciation and promotion of MS as an essential activity for the development and learning of children with SHN. To this end, educators play a very important role in implementing these types of stories. Thus, the investigation emphasizes the need to incorporate the MS in reading moments as a valuable tool for the inclusion of this child
Development of a tool to assess the compliance of cafeteria menus with the Mediterranean Diet
This research was funded by PRIMA – a partnership for research and innovation in the Mediterranean Area, which is supported by Horizon 2020, the European Union’s Framework Programme for Research and Innovation. PRIMA internal reference – 1925. This research was supported by PRIMA/0008/2022, PRIMA/0009/2022, and FCT/MCTES UIDB/05608/2020, UIDP/05608/2020, UIDB/05748/2020 and UIDP/05748/2020.Background: The Mediterranean diet (MD) has been considered one of the healthiest dietary patterns, and an excellent model of sustainability. Higher Education food services present an excellent scenario to encourage students healthy eating habits and modulate food choices. The purpose of this work was to develop an index to evaluate MD compliance with cafeteria menus. Methods: Three major axes were considered: MD key points, existing indexes on individual adherence to the MD, and existing indexes on menu assessment. The index includes four levels: (I) assesses the availability (IA), variety, and frequency (IB) of food; (II) evaluates the menu's nutritional quality; (III) assesses the menu's quality through information provided in the dishes' technical specifications and (IV) allows a more detailed evaluation through on-site visits and documentation consultation. The components receive a score between - 2 and 3, according to the given answers. The final score may vary between - 33.5 and 41.5 points depending on the degree of compliance with the MD key points. The index was applied to 60 menus from different contexts using complete assessments of each menu, performed independently by 3 researchers, using the same pre-prepared Microsoft Excel® spreadsheet. Inter-rater reliability was assessed using Cohen's Kappa and internal consistency with Cronbach's alpha. Results: Assessment for level I) returned a Cohen's Kappa coefficient of 0.92 (p < 0.05) and a Cronbach's alpha coefficient of 0.88. Dimension I is mostly influenced by subdimension IB (r = 0,97). The availability of non-starchy vegetables and fresh fruits has a stronger correlation with IA (availability of foods), and the higher availability of fish, pulses, and fruit has a strong positive correlation with IB (variety and frequency of foods). Conclusion: Researchers believe that the index is a useful tool to assess compliance of menus to the MD and help identify the key points that need to be addressed and improved in cafeterias.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Environmental and occupational exposure to chemical agents and health challenges I: what message can bring to regulatory science?
Human beings live in constant contact with chemical agents—mainly through environmental exposure—and also derived from occupational settings. Environmental exposure is ubiquitous, originating from air, water, and soil. While some chemicals are short-lived in the environment and may elicit no harmful effects in humans, other chemicals bioaccumulate and/or persist for a long time in the environment or the human body due to frequent exposure. However, it is valuable to note that environmental exposure also includes diet, lifestyle, hobbies, and exposure to other substances such as drugs, food additives, pesticides, and nanomaterials, among other daily products, which are currently significant areas of research, such as bisphenols, per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), micro-nano plastics (MP-NPs), among others. Occupational exposure concerns the potentially harmful exposure to hazardous chemicals in the workplace; however, more specifically, it involves substantial contact with hazardous substances. Possible health effects can arise from these types of exposure, which can be measured and prevented by biomonitoring, and the outcome should be integrated to ensure better regulatory decision-making. This editorial provides a brief overview of the major findings of each of the research published, and taken together which information can give to surveillance health and regulatory science on the future research that should be considered.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Employees have increasingly stood out as a key audience within organizations. In this context, employee engagement has become a priority for companies. Studies indicate that employees tend to be more engaged with organizations that reflect their values and offer meaning and purpose beyond their daily responsibilities. In this context, one strategy that has gained traction in recent years to engage employees, in various organizations globally, is corporate volunteering.
The aim of this study is to understand the contribution of corporate volunteering to employee engagement from a Public Relations perspective. To achieve this, a case study was conducted on Volkswagen Autoeuropa, focusing on its corporate volunteering program RENASCER.
The methodology adopted was qualitative, using document analysis of three communication materials from the RENASCER program and semi-structured interviews. Twelve employees of Volkswagen Autoeuropa who participated in the RENASCER program were interviewed, along with the three members of the management board and the communication and sustainability specialist responsible for the volunteering program. Through the presentation and analysis of the results, a positive correlation between corporate volunteering and employee engagement was found, showing how corporate volunteering, aligned with good Internal Communication practices, can promote employee engagement
