Systematics investigations and experiment in chemistry and science education : Teachers’ perspective on opportunities and challenges in grade 4-6
This study investigates the use of practical work, such as experiments and systematic investigations, in chemistry and science education in grades 4–6. It explores the motivations behind teachers’ incorporation of such activities and the structural factors influencing their decisions. The study seeks to answer: (1) How do teachers perceive the role of experiments and systematic investigations in science education? and (2) What factors affect their ability to implement practical work in their teaching? The research adopts a mixed-methods approach, including online surveys with 197 participants and semi-structured interviews with selected teachers. The analytical framework used in this study is Lundgren’s (1960) theory of Frame Factors and Wright's (1989) Action Logic to understand external and internal determinants affecting teaching practices. Findings suggest that teachers view practical work as essential for students’ engagement, understanding, and the development of scientific skills. However, structural limitations such as large class sizes, insufficient materials, and time often hinder the effective implementation of these activities. Despite these challenges, many teachers adapt their practices, favoring demonstrations or simplified experiments when resources are limited. The study concludes that practical work is highly valued, but better resources, teacher training, and organizational support are needed to fully fulfill its potential in science and chemistry education
Det reellas estetik : En Lacaniansk tolkning av David Lynchs Blue Velvet
This paper, The Aesthetics of the Real: A Lacanian Interpretation of David Lynch's Blue Velvet, examines Jacques Lacan’s concept of the real and its portrayal in Lynch's Blue Velvet (1986). Using a psychoanalytic approach, the paper focuses on three key scenes to demonstrate how the elusive real manifests through auditory and tactile elements, such as the blue velvet, the singing voice, and recurring soundscapes. The opening scene creates a tactile sense of the world in its immediate and indefinable proximity. The becoming of the subject is explored through Lacan’s mirror stage and the confrontation with the real. Additionally, the feminine and “extra-linguistic” dimension of the voice is addressed, contributing to the sense of the real. This analysis shows how Lynch's film constructs a complex aesthetic in which the real appears as the excluded, the elusive, while being constituted in the ability of filmic images to embody tactility. In addition, the paper helps to further incorporate the real into Lacanian film theory, which has previously focused on the imaginary register.
This bachelor thesis aims to examine how Palestinian women are portrayed in Swedish media discourse. The study is delimited to the presentation of Palestinian women in Gaza, focusing on the period from the events of October 7th, 2023, to the current date, 20th of november 2024. In this research, I analyze 14 articles from two prominent Swedish newspapers to understand how Palestinian women are portrayed, depicted, and presented. The thesis seeks to answer the two following research questions: How are Palestinian women portrayed in Swedish media reporting after October 7, 2023, and to what extent do trends of invisibility, stereotypical portrayals, or silence around their experiences and agency manifest? What colonial power structures are reflected in the media discourse about the occupation in Gaza, and how do these structures influence the portrayal of Palestinian women? By applying feminist postcolonial theory and the three-dimensional model of critical discourse analysis, the study delves into these research questions by identifying trends in their representation. This involves examining key aspects such as who is speaking, who the intended audience is, whose stories are being highlighted, and how these stories are conveyed. The thesis identifies four discursive themes: Silences and women as anonymous victims, Women’s own stories, Women’s experiences of vulnerability and loss, and The power of representation
Religious diversity as a challenge and opportunity: RE teachers’ strategies and needs : An interview study on a teachers’ perspective
This essay explores how RE teachers in Swedish schools address and navigate religious diversity in the classroom. The study focuses on the challenges and opportunities teachers encounter, the strategies they employ, and the support they need to better manage religious diversity. Using a qualitative method, semi-structured interviews lasting 45–60 minutes were conducted with five RE teachers working at five different schools in Sweden. The findings of the study reveal that teachers face numerous challenges related to students’ polarized opinions and attitudes, as well as strong views on sensitive topics such as LGBTQIA+ issues, antisemitism, and abortion. The dominance of the secular norm versus students’ strong religious beliefs is evident among the teachers. Factors such as time constrains and limited resources further complicate teachers’ efforts to handle religious diversity. Despite these challenges, teachers perceive religious diversity as an asset that enriches discussions, broadens perspectives, and prepares students for a life in a pluralistic society. Teachers use various strategies to manage religious diversity: working proactively, creating safe classroom environments, and establishing clear rules and guidelines to encourage students to share their experiences, exchange perspectives, and enhance their learning. However, the teachers express a need for additional training, resources, support from the school management, and collegial support to effectively handle religious diversity. This study, theoretically grounded in intercultural pedagogy, contributes to research by providing a teachers’ perspective on the challenges and opportunities presented by the multireligious classroom
The auditing profession faces several challenges in the future, particularly regarding the integration and use of new tools in the audit process. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is an example of a technology that is rapidly transforming how various industries operate, including the auditing profession.Through advanced tools for data analysis, risk assessment, and the automation of repetitive tasks, AI can help companies as well as auditors streamline their workflows, reduce manual errors, and improve accuracy in audits. This technological advancement allows auditors to focus on more complex and strategic aspects of their profession. However, the adoption of AI is not without challenges. Issues such as data security, ethical concerns, over-reliance on automated systems, and the need for human supervision in critical decisions remain significant obstacles to its seamless integration. This study investigates how Swedish auditors perceive the benefits and risks associated with using AI in their work. Through a nationwide survey, the research explores how AI affects efficiency, workload, and audit quality. The findings reveal that a majority of auditors hold a positive view of AI, citing its ability to enhance productivity and improve accuracy as key advantages. Nonetheless, the study also uncovers significant concerns, particularly around the risks of erroneous AI analyses and the handling of sensitive data. Respondents consistently emphasized the importance of ongoing education and training to ensure the effective and responsible use of AI technologies. The results of this study aim to provide valuable insights for practitioners and policymakers, helping them navigate the challenges and opportunities presented by AI in the auditing profession.
This study examines how the legacy of the entailed estate Sundby gård has shaped the local community on Ornö, with a focus on identity, power structures and collective memories. By applying Henri Lefebvre's theory of perceived, planned and lived spaces in combination with empirical data from in-depth interviews, it highlights how historical power structures still affect contemporary relations and societal dynamics. The study shows that the influence of the trustee, although formally ended, is deeply integrated into decisions concerning land use, social relations and cultural traditions. The results point to a complex balancing act between tradition and change, where the former trust functions both as a cultural resource and a structural limitation. At the same time, new collective memories and traditions are created in resistance to these structures, illustrating how the lived space can become an arena for the renegotiation of power and community. The study identifies a tension between older generations' strong connection to the entailed estates heritage and younger and newcomers' more distant views of this heritage, which affects Ornö's collective identity. The conclusion emphasizes the importance of uniting the historical and the contemporary through inclusive dialogue and responsibility for the past. This can create a foundation for sustainable development and strengthen the island's identity, where different perspectives and needs can be accommodated. The study contributes to research by highlighting subtle power dynamics and the complex relationship between history and the present in an archipelago context
The purpose of this study, which is based on the theory of the pedagogical cultural borderlands, has been to investigate how the national minority Tornedalians is made visible within Swedish public libraries and what kind of knowledge exchange that takes place between the monority and public librarians, as well as in what ways public libraries can be said to be pedagogical cultural borderlands. Current choice of topic is relevant, for both the research field and the profession, since it sheds new light on a prioritized user group and contributes concrete knowledge to a library sector that, according to older research, has worked very little with national minorities. The empirical material is derived from four semi-structured interviews. Two participants are public librarians from different parts of the country, but both work within the administrative area of the Meänkieli language. Remaining participants hold other types of library-related official roles. The interviews, which were conducted digitally, were manually transcribed an analysed using the thematic analysis method. This resulted in four thematic categories. These themes were then yet again analysed, based on the theoretical framework, and the study concluded, among other things, that the visibility in the library room can be divided into inward and outward approaches. The latter is further distinguished by being either active or passive. When it comes to exchange of knowledge, this can be described as a three-link chain. Information is collected from the minority, passes through the library and is passed on again. Overall, the study presents a complex picture of the role of the public libraries as pedagogical cultural borderlands. There are both positive examples, such as the visibility, and more negative elements. The latter involve unfavourable power structures, which reinforce the notion of a homogeneous cultural landscape. This includes, for example, how the monolingual norm still prevails in the public libraries.
Mahsa (Jina) Amini was arrested by the Iranian morality police on September 13, 2022, for violating the country’s dress codes, and died three days later after being beaten. Her death sparked widespread protests, and Iranian security forces responded with violence against the demonstrators, resulting in numerous deaths and injuries. Many Kurds, who faced persecution in Kurdistan, were forced to flee to Europe, with Germany becoming a refuge for many of them. My study focuses on Kurdish refugees in Germany and their experiences of oppression and involvement in the "Women, Life, Freedom" movement. By examining their identity, activism, and integration in Europe, the study highlights their struggle for justice and belonging in exile. The purpose of the thesis is to investigate how Kurdish demonstrators in Germany are influenced by their experiences of oppression and exile in relation to their identity and commitment to rights. This thesis uses phenomenology as its theoretical foundation, drawing on concepts from thinkers like Alfred Schutz, Peter L. Berger, and Thomas Luckmann to explore how Kurdish demonstrators' experiences of oppression and exile affect their identity and activism. Through the theory of lifeworld, action, typification, and meaning provinces, the thesis aims to understand how these experiences shape their perceptions of the world and their societal engagement. The method for this thesis consisted of individual interviews via Zoom with five Kurdish refugees in Germany, selected through a previous contact, including both men and women between the ages of 23 and 43. The results of the thesis show that Kurdish demonstrators in Germany, who became involved after the murder of Jina Amini, highlight experiences of oppression in Iran, particularly gender discrimination, patriarchal structures, religious repression, and ethnic conflicts, as a driving force for their fight for freedom and justice. The informants describe a life in Germany where they balance integration with preserving their Kurdish identity, while facing challenges such as language learning and trauma from their homeland. They find support in solidarity and activism based on the slogan "Women, Life, Freedom," which has become a symbol of their collective struggle. My thesis explores how exile shapes Kurdish identity, solidarity, and activism, emphasizing cultural expressions as symbols of political struggle. Keywords: Jina (Mahsa) Amini, Kurdistan, Kurd, protesters, “woman, life, freedom”, Iran, Germany, integration, ethnic, discrimination
