This essay examines two Swedish legal cases related to Nazism, with the aim to investigate if there are influences of Satanism and The Sinister Tradition from groups such as, The Order of Nine Angles and Atomwaffe Division. Currently, various media reports that young people are drawn into online groups connected to Nazism and Satanism. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether this has developed in Sweden and to what extent. The method used i this study is qualitative analysis of ideas and ideological content, as well as visual analysis of the language of images and semiotics. I have used several theories, including understanding solitary perpetrators, ritual and power, and analysis of propaganda image, to gain the best possible insight into the theme. The symbols present in the empirical material, along with what emerges through investigation and interrogation, indicate influences of this. The analysis reveals interesting aspects of how influences from Nazi German occultism persist, and how Satanism and The Sinister Tradition have been adopted and influenced one of the legal cases being studied
Susan and Barbie: Linguistic constructions of gender in the television series Scrubs
This study investigates how gender is linguistically constructed in the television series Scrubs, focusing on the characters JD and Elliot. Drawing on Butler’s theory of performativity and Harré and van Langenhove’s positioning theory, the analysis examines dialogue from the first season and aims to reveal how explicitly gendered terms, implicitly gendered language, recurring forms of address, and references to normative behavior function as discursive strategies of identity construction. Through both quantitative and qualitative methods, the study shows how JD and Elliot are portrayed, revealing how sitcom dialogue both reinforces and challenges traditional gender norms. By situating the analysis within the broader context of popular culture, the essay highlights how scripted television dialogue reflects and reinforces cultural ideas about masculinity and femininity, while also offering audiences moments of resistance of gender norms. The findings underscore the pedagogical potential of using popular culture texts to promote critical media literacy, encouraging students to question everyday language practices and recognize the social structures they uphold
Förbättrad handledning, större framgång : Hässelby-Vällingby stadsdelsförvaltnings handledning av Stockholmjobbare
The study aims to examine which measures the Hässelby Vällingby district administration can implement to strengthen motivation within municipal workplaces to receive Stockholm job participants. The study has also reviewed the effects of the initiative Enhanced Guidance within Stockholm Jobs on the district administration so far, focusing on implemented measures and achieved outcomes in strengthening supervisory roles within its municipal workplaces. In this study, a qualitative method has been used to collect data. The empirical material consists of nine semi-structured interviews with individuals employed at Jobbtorg Nordväst, Hässelby-Vällingby cityadministration, and various department heads and employees of its municipal operations. The informants narratives in this study have been linked to cultural-ethnic sensitivity theory, and thematic analysis as well as the stakeholder evaluation model have been applied to enable a grounded analysis of the perspectives from the informants. The study's results show that the initiative Enhanced Guidance of Stockholmjobbare has been positive so far. The administrative burden for the operations has decreased, and the appointment of a head supervisor responsible for the improved introduction, training, and guidance of Stockholmjobbare during internship and base employment has contributed with positive effects in strengthening the municipal operations' motivation in Stockholmjobb. Despite these advances, several challenges remain, such as unclear role distribution between Jobbtorg and the head supervisor, staff turnover within the Stockholmjobb team, certain operations’ continued low willingness to receive Stockholmjobbare, Stockholmjobbare’s difficulties in adapting to workplace culture, the need for a more practical and culturally sensitive supervisor training, lack of public recognition and financial incentives for operations and supervisors, as well as insufficient knowledge about the work differentiation of Stockholmjobbare compared to other staff at the workplace. The study’s results indicate that the city administration should continue to support the role of the head supervisor and municipal operations through administrative assistance. Recommendations to the Hässelby-Vällingby city administration are to clarify the role distribution between the head supervisor and Jobbtorg, establish a sustainable Stockholmjobb team, refine supervisor training with practical knowledge, continue the dialogue with the city commissioners and the SFI operations, and consider providing public recognition to committed municipal workplaces, Stockholmjobbare who have moved on to self-sufficiency, as well as financial incentives for workplace mentors.
"En udda fågel" : En diskursanalytisk intervjustudie av skolbibliotekariens yrkesroll i spänningsfältet mellan pedagogiska ideal och organisatoriska villkor
The aim of this qualitative interview study is to examine how school librarians understand their professional role in a time where the conditions that govern the role are changing. As the legislative reform regarding school libraries went into effect in July of 2025 it is of interest to understand how these changes are perceived by the profession. The empirical material was collected through semi structured interviews with four school librarians active within the greater Stockholm area. The data has been thematized and later analyzed using discourse analysis through the conceptual framework of Chantal Mouffes's theory of agonistic pluralism. Mouffe's understanding of the terms conflict, consensus, power and hegemony were used as analytical tools. The key findings of this study show that on top of legislature, policy documents and local expectations from administrative staff, there are three primary discoursesof the that affect the school librarians in their professional lives. These are: the discourse of visibility, or lack thereof, the discourse of the library as a safe space and the discourse of professional agency and demarcation. Thus, this study concludes that the role of the school librarian, as it is, cannot be presupposed and needs to be negotiated locally. Advocating for the profession is therefore often deemed a necessity, rather than a coincidence. The inclusion of school librarians in the school organizations is currently not guaranteed, and the professional role is often characterized by loneliness and organizational exclusion. In this study the role is portrayed as an odd bird in the school hierarchy, where hegemony affects the professions visibility, angency, as well as legitimacy.
This study aims to explore how employees with a hybrid work arrangement divide their professional role from their private role, as well as how they manage the boundary between work and leisure time. The study is guided by two research questions: How do employees with a hybrid work arrangement manage the division between professional and private roles? And how do employees with a hybrid work arrangement manage the boundary between working hours and leisure time? A qualitative method, based on semi-structed interviews with seven employees working in a hybrid arrangement, was used for the investigation. Erving Goffman’s (2013) dramaturgical perspective was applied as the theoretical framework. The results showed that the management of boundaries and roles can take the form of various strategies, such as having a separate workspace at home, shutting down the computer at the end of the day, distancing from family members during the workday, and choices of clothing. The strategies varied among the informants, and the need for boundary management and role separation proved to be individual
"Det finns också en risk att de inte tränar på att använda svenska fullt ut" : En kvalitativ och kvantitativ studie om lärares implementering av transspråkande i den flerspråkiga undervisningen.
In today's Swedish schools, the number of multilingual students continues to grow due to globalization, migration and forced displacement due to conflicts and instability. These students draw on their strongest languages as resources for learning Swedish and shaping their identities. This study examines how teachers working in multilingual classrooms perceive and use translanguaging as a pedagogical tool for supporting students' Swedish language development. It also explores whether teachers' own multilingual backgrounds relate to specific views or discourses on translanguaging, based on their questionnaire responses. The following questions have been answered to fulfill the purpose of the study:1.What perspectives on translanguaging emerge from the teachers’ questionnaire responses in the multilingual classroom?2. To what extent do teachers report using translanguaging as a didactic/pedagogical tool?3. Is there a relationship between teachers’ linguistic backgrounds and the discourses on translanguaging reflected in their questionnaire responses? The study is based on a questionnaire distributed to teachers through email, Linkedeln, and social media. In total, 26 responses with sufficiently detailed answers were included in the qualitative analysis. Approximately half of the respondents reported having a multilingual background. The analysis draws on translanguaging theory and critical discourse theory. The results show that most teachers hold positive views toward translanguaging. When translanguaging is not used extensively, the reasons often lie beyond the teachers’ control, such as school policies or students’ reluctance to use their strongest language in the classroom. Teachers who expressed more hesitation mainly feared that translanguaging might limit students’ development of Swedish. The study does not indicate a clear relationship between teachers’ linguistic backgrounds and the discourses expressed in their responses
Navigating the Nexus of Biodiversity and Global Trade : Challenges and Priorities for Future Research
The relationship between European trade and biodiversity is complex and multifaceted. Trade flows impact biodiversity both directly and indirectly, and are dependent on ecosystem services that are underpinned by biodiversity. Evidence shows that global trade flows currently contribute to substantial environmental pressures and associated biodiversity loss. This also implies that gains can be made for biodiversity if these pressures are reduced or removed. Environmental provisions are increasingly being included in trade policies and agreements to achieve this, but their effectiveness is constrained by a poor understanding of biodiversity-trade interactions and effects, and a lack of measurable metrics and targets. Moreover, environmental policies aimed at mitigating the adverse effects of trade often risk merely re-directing trade flows, and the associated environmental pressures, to other regions. The challenge of understanding and addressing the effects of trade, environment and biodiversity interactions is further exacerbated by siloed analytical and policy domains dealing with trade. We present a research agenda that synthesises insights from diverse scientific disciplines, policy sectors, and recent scholarly advances in biodiversity and trade. The research agenda was developed through an iterative process that drew on Delphi methodologies to gather input and expertise from the Partnership for European Environmental Research (PEER), a network of eight leading environmental research institutes across Europe. This was combined with inputs from a workshop with policymakers, particularly from the European Commission. Although our research agenda draws on examples of global trade with the European Union (EU), the identified research topics apply generally to global trading systems. The proposed research agenda comprises four research topics: two aimed at understanding the effects of biodiversity-trade interactions, and two focused on responses that reconcile biodiversity outcomes in trading systems. In the first two, on understanding the effects of biodiversity-trade interactions, we highlight the need for complex systems analysis that takes account of a diverse range of disciplines and includes a deeper examination of the underlying causes of ecologically harmful trade. In the second, on considering responses to improve biodiversity outcomes in trading systems, two key topics of research were identified: the first topic focuses on financial flows and supply chains, and the second on effective and equitable policies for the biodiversity-trade nexus. Together, the four research topics provide information to critically assess where and under what conditions trade can be beneficial from a broader societal perspective – a perspective that accounts for a range of environmental, social and economic outcomes across geographic scales, sectors and social groups. With this research agenda we aim to foster critical inquiry, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary collaboration, and science-policy initiatives that enhance the knowledge, data and capacities necessary for a more sustainable and equitable approach to global trade and biodiversity governance
Different yet complementary : A systematic literature review on data journalism in visualization research and journalism studies
This article surveys and compares literature on data journalism from two areas of inquiry: journalism studies and visualization research. As digital interfaces become an important access point for news, journalism and visualization scholars have begun to share a common research interest: data journalism. Given their radically different traditions and histories, these areas follow very different rules in how the topic is approached. The result is two parallel scholarships on data journalism with little points of contact. Arguably, developing research space for encounters and exchange of the two is an opportunity for expanding the academic discourse on data journalism. This study aims at opening this space of exchange through a systematic literature review. 121 articles, published between 2010 and 2023, are analyzed. Findings show that the two areas of research approach data journalism with very different aspirations. In relation to data journalism, journalism studies and visualization research could be compared with Lazersfeld’s distinction between critical and administrative research. These aspects cause various differences at an epistemic level, namely what, how and when knowledge about data journalism is produced.
Making Sustainability Meaningful : Exploring Reporting and Accountability in Swedish Nonprofit Organizations
As nonprofit organizations (NPOs) face increasing demands to demonstrate their societal relevance and impact, sustainability reporting (SR) has emerged as a key tool for accountability. However, SR in the nonprofit sector remains fragmented and conceptually ambiguous, particularly when corporate-oriented frameworks are applied to mission-driven organizations with distinct values and stakeholder relationships. This study explores how Swedish NPOs understand and communicate sustainability through their reporting practices and how these practices reflect broader accountability logics. Drawing on a qualitative research design combining document analysis of reports from 30 organizations and semi-structured interviews with representatives from eight of them, the study reveals substantial variation in both the content and form of sustainability disclosures. SR is shown to range from minimal mentions to comprehensive reporting, shaped less by standardized frameworks and more by internal values, mission, and strategic orientation. Three thematic orientations emerged, internally oriented, mission-aligned, and system-oriented sustainability, each expressed through either formalized or narrative expression. While some organizations adopt SR to meet compliance demands, others use it to advance stakeholder engagement, ethical reflection, or advocacy efforts. By integrating document and interview data, the study contributes to two key research streams: sustainability reporting in NPOs and nonprofit accountability. It challenges the dominance of compliance-based models and highlights the role of adaptive and mission-driven accountability practices. The findings underscore the need for flexible and context-sensitive approaches to SR that align with nonprofit values and long-term goals. Future research should investigate stakeholder involvement in reporting, the evolution of SR over time, and cross-national comparisons of accountability frameworks in the nonprofit sector
Background: This research investigates the connection between non-performing loans (NPL) and the capital adequacy ratio (CAR) in a group of banks from Sweden and Italy over the years 2018–2022. Special attention is given to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Purpose: The aim of the thesis is to examine if a rise in NPL levels correlates with a decrease in CAR, and whether this connection varies among countries with differing banking conditions. Also to examine whether the pandemic had a significant impact on the relationship between NPL and CAR. Theory: The theoretical framework relies on Capital Buffer Theory and Signaling Theory. The first describes how banks modify capital buffers to withstand losses and ensure adherence to regulations. The second explains how managers may under report credit risk by reducing loan loss provisions (LLP) in order to protect capital ratios. Method: The research utilizes a quantitative method, utilizing secondary data from the yearly reports of 20 chosen banks (10 Swedish and 10 Italian). Descriptive statistics and regression analysis are employed to assess the relationship between NPL ratios and CAR in both countries. Results: The findings showed that NPL and CAR in both countries had a negative relationship. Banks that have a strong CAR also tend to increase their LLPs during the pandemic. However no significant effect of the pandemic on NPL levels was found. Conclusion: The study confirms a negative link between NPL and CAR, while no significant COVID-19 impact was found
