In an era of increasing sustainability demands and accelerating digitalization, organizations face the challenge of integrating technological solutions with long-term sustainability goals. This bachelor's thesis explores how digital transformation influences sustainability work within IT-dependent work systems, adopting a sociotechnical perspective. The aim is to analyze the opportunities and challenges that emerge from the interaction between technology, organizations, and human actors, as well as how responsibility for sustainability initiatives is distributed and coordinated across IT, operations, and sustainability units. The study employs a qualitative research approach based on in-depth interviews with professionals from organizations operating in a Swedish context. The theoretical framework combines five established theories: the Integrated Sustainability Framework, the Belief–Action–Outcome framework, the Digital Transformation Process Model), sustainability integration through socio-environmental indicators, and the affordance theory for sustainability practices. A deductive conceptual model is developed to guide the analysis. Findings indicate that digital technologies can act as enablers of sustainability by supporting automation, information dissemination, and organizational transformation. However, organizational silos, unclear responsibility structures, and cultural resistance pose significant barriers. The study highlights that functional affordances—such as sensemaking and sustainable practices—are critical for realizing the potential of digitalization in sustainability initiatives. This thesis contributes to the field of information systems by providing insights into how IT-dependent work systems can be structured to support sustainable development, emphasizing the need for integrated efforts across organizational levels in digital transformation processes.
Exploring the Accessibility of Self-Service Navigation Terminals : A qualitative study on user experiences and design strategies for accessible self-service navigation terminals
Accessibility and equal opportunities have increased in importance since the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to the introduction of the European Accessibility Act. This directive mandates compliance by June 28, 2025, to ensure that digital solutions are accessible to everyone. However, the directive has limitations regarding selfservice navigation terminals. This raises the question of how a global real estate company addresses accessibility when designing these self-service navigation terminals in their shopping centers to meet the needs of people with disabilities (PWDs), and whether this work adequately addresses users’ needs. Through interviews and observations, this qualitative study explores how people with mobility impairments experience the accessibility of these navigation terminals and whether their needs are being addressed. It also assesses how the company’s accessibility efforts align with user requirements. The findings show that people with mobility impairments perceive these terminals as inaccessible, primarily due to height and size issues. While the company focuses extensively on digital accessibility, physical factors are also considered, although they are limited by budget constraints and the need to prioritize certain user groups. The study concludes that although digital accessibility is a priority, gaps remain in fully meeting the needs of users with mobility impairments
This study explores how upper secondary school teachers of religious education experience manage and reflect upon teaching sensitive issues in multicultural classrooms. The research is guided by three questions: what challenges teachers face, which strategies they employ, and how they understand their professional role and responsibility in such contexts. The theoretical framework is based on Hans-Georg Gadamer´s hermeneutics, particularly the concepts of fusion of horizons, history of effects, and the hermeneutic circle. Empirical data was collected through eight semi-structured interviews with certified upper secondary school teachers in religious education. The material was analysed using qualitative content analysis within a hermeneutic approach. The findings indicate that teachers view the teaching of sensitive topics as both meaningful and demanding. Challenges arise not only from the complexity of the content, but also from the emotional dynamics and interpretive tensions that emerge when classroom discourse intersects with students' worldviews. Both religious and secular norms may contribute to exclusive climates, extending the scope of previous research. Teachers describe strategies that focus on creating safety, building relationships, and avoiding representational burdens. Teaching is not perceived as a neutral transmission of knowledge, but rather as an ethically grounded, relational and interpretive practice. The professional role is understood as enabling meaningful dialogue while protecting students´ interpretive space. The study concludes that religious education in intercultural classrooms requires a form of professional competence in which didactic and ethics are deeply intertwine
This study examines the relationship between institutional factors and the number of reported money laundering cases in European countries. Focusing on three key variables – corruption levels (CPI), financial market efficiency, and AML risk (Basel AML Index) – the research analyzes data from 19 European nations to identify patterns and possible explanations for variations in money laundering reports. Using quantitative secondary data and descriptive statistics, the study compares countries with varying degrees of institutional strength. The findings indicate that countries with higher levels of corruption and weaker financial institutions tend to report fewer money laundering cases, which may reflect deficiencies in detection and reporting mechanisms. The study concludes that institutional quality plays a significant role in how effectively money laundering is identified and addressed across Europe
Data Journalism as “Terra Incognita” : Newcomers’ Tensions in Shifting Towards Data Journalism Epistemology
This article investigates data journalism epistemology through Michel Foucault’s definition of power. The growing demand for data-savvy reporters with computational skills has been proven to shift the newsrooms’ culture in media companies across the globe. Previous research has documented journalists’ shift towards a data-centred epistemology and the increasingly important role of computation and data-driven practices in newsrooms. By focusing on inexperienced journalists as they mobilise data journalism for the first time, this research openly discusses its epistemology as a form of Foucauldian power: which epistemological tensions–individual or structural–emerge among newcomers when reporting extensively with data? The article presents the case of a newly formed data journalism team at taz, a German cooperative media company. It is based on qualitative data collected through action research, namely six in-depth interviews, auto-ethnographic notes and self-reflective inquiries. Data are framed through Foucault’s concepts of power and will to truth. Results show the discord between data journalism epistemology and its practical implementation. Despite prioritising democratic access to data, technologies and non-hierarchical forms of cooperation, data journalism remains largely dependent on traditional methods and culture.
Environmental sustainability and climate action in Sweden : Do the Swedish legal and institutional strategies deliver the climate goals in SDG-13?
Aim:Sweden consistently ranks highly in global sustainability and climate change indices. This presentation aims to critically examine the country’s legal and institutional frameworks to understand the strengths and weaknesses of its strategies in achieving the targets under Goal 13 of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By analyzing Sweden’s approach, the study seeks to uncover key factors contributing to its performance in environmental sustainability and climate action. Main Arguments:Achieving the targets of SDG 13 requires robust national efforts in climate mitigation and adaptation. This analysis explores how Sweden integrates climate change into national policies and planning (Target 13.2), enhances education and institutional capacity (Target 13.3), and contributes to global resilience and adaptive capacity (Target 13.1). It also examines Sweden’s role in operationalizing the Green Climate Fund (Target 13.a) and supporting vulnerable countries (Target 13.b). The study provides insights into the alignment of Swedish legal instruments and institutional mechanisms with these global objectives. Conclusion:Sweden has adopted a comprehensive Climate Policy Framework, including a Climate Act, defined climate goals, a Climate Policy Council, and a national adaptation strategy supported by green investments. However, assessing actual progress remains challenging due to the lack of measurable indicators specific to SDG 13. To enhance effectiveness, Sweden should prioritize climate adaptation, strengthen local capacity-building efforts, and establish clearer links between SDG 13 and other relevant goals to facilitate more accurate progress tracking
