Title Market Reactions to Share Repurchase Programs : A Quantitative Study of Swedish Listed Companies

    No full text
Share repurchase programs have become increasingly common among Swedish listed companies. However, it remains unclear how investors react to different types of motives communicated in repurchase announcements. While international studies often report positive market responses, the Swedish context remains underexplored. The purpose of this study is to examine how the stock market reacts to share repurchase announcements, depending on the motive communicated by the company at the time of disclosure. The study focuses on short-term price reactions surrounding the announcement date. A quantitative event study was conducted using data from repurchase announcements made between 2020 and 2024 by companies listed on Nasdaq OMX Stockholm. Cumulative abnormal returns (CAR) were calculated within a short event window. The motives were identified and categorized using qualitative content analysis of press releases and annual reports. Repurchase announcements generally lead to positive market reactions, particularly when the communicated motive involves undervaluation or signaling. However, differences between motive categories are not consistently statistically significant. The study highlights the importance of how motives are communicated and their influence on investor perception

    No full text

Framing the Feed : A Framing Analysis of the 2024 Syrian Power Shift by CNN, BBC, and Al Jazeera English on Instagram

    No full text
This thesis explores how international news outlets frame their conflict reporting on Instagram’s multimodal format. The study uses a quantitative content analysis to analyse CNN, BBC, and Al Jazeera English’s Instagram coverage of the HTS offensive and the fall of Bashar al-Assad in Syria in late 2024 to discover dominant framing practices on social media. Frames were analysed across text, visuals, and audio, focusing on three framing dimensions: war and peace, thematic and episodic, and Semetko and Valkenburg’s generic frame types. Findings show that conflict, war, and episodic frames remain dominant, echoing traditional reporting styles. However, modality-specific patterns show that audio elements often introduce more thematic and human narratives, and visuals are more likely to depict peace-oriented imagery. These results suggest that Instagram’s multimodality influences framing practices. Each outlet largely maintains its established editorial identity. CNN emphasises war, conflict, and episodic frames, while the BBC is slightly more balanced. Al Jazeera, on the other hand, foregrounds human interest and peace frames. Nevertheless, cross-modality analysis likewise shows that while outlets continue their established strategies, there is also an editorial awareness of Instagram’s platform affordances

Local News in Transition : A Comparative Study of a Local British Newsletter and a Local British Newspaper

    No full text
This thesis explores the differences between local platform-based newsletters, such as The Mill, and traditional local newspapers, such as the Manchester Evening News, with a focus on how each outlet sets the news agenda and maintains journalistic quality. As local newspapers face ongoing challenges, newsletters have emerged as a growing alternative in the UK’s local media landscape. Through a combination of a quantitative analysis of themes and qualitative framing analysis, this study compares the topics prioritized by each outlet and evaluates their reporting against quality criteria of journalism, including relevance, contextualization, professionalism, diversity, and interactivity. The findings show that The Mill, operating through a reader-funded newsletter model, emphasizes slower, more in-depth journalism with greater attention to context and a broader range of perspectives. In contrast, the Manchester Evening News tends to publish more frequent, shorter stories, often centered on crime and breaking news. This research contributes to the understanding of how digital formats may shape the future of local news

Pulse, interaction and timing in the music class : A eurythmics teacher´s analysis of three lessons in middle school

    No full text
This master's thesis examines three scenes from primary school music classes from the perspective of a eurhythmic and music teacher. The thesis is written as a scientific essay using a method that has been developed at the Center for Studies in Practical Knowledge at Södertörn University. Over my years as a primary school teacher, eurhythmic pedagogy has proven a great asset for improving classroom interplay and discovering latent musicality in students. The analysis of the three scenes found that pulse, interplay and timing can mean different things in different situations. Writing the essay has led to an insight into the importance of being able to read a group´s physical and musical timing and movement. A sense of timing is key to notice when something stands out, stops the flow, takes over or when someone disappears into the crowd.   The thesis finds that timing and pulse are two musical actions that can be tools in creating a we. However, in the three scenes analysed there are different kinds of ‘we’, an inclusive one and an exclusive one. Sometimes the interplay in music classes can enhance a feeling that ´we´ can accomplish things together, while in another context, it can create a strong group bond that excludes and pushes people away. Pulse and timing can at times be coercive, while in a different situation it can be more open and accepting. The thesis presents three different types of pulse: the metric, the accelerating and the agogic pulse. The scenes are analysed with the help of texts on matters such as subjectification, plurality and empathic timing

    No full text
Authenticity is a hard to grasp concept, and what this essay is aiming to achieve is to clarify what authenticity actually entails for people who have traveled to Bali. What we have done to reach this conclusion is through qualitative interviews with nine Swedish people who have visited Bali. Apart from that we have made a netnographic investigation through both images and comments on social media. The reason we have done this is to determine the difference between experienced authenticity and mediated authenticity. The main point of the study has been that authenticity is indeed subjective, which is why we have decided to research empirical evidence from different standpoints. We have chosen to analyze these facts by categorizing common factors to achieve the conclusion that authenticity is experienced through actual experiences, rather than just through theoretical ideas about what it entails. We strive to create newfound understanding within the concept of authenticity by limiting the geographical area affected for a more coherent and in-depth study. The results shows that visitors have a common perception about authenticity on Bali and that social media have an impact on authenticity

    No full text
This following study explores the experiences of licensed social workers, volunteers and employees of a social enterprise in Bangkok, Thailand. The focus is on the different challenges the participants face while working in the social work field, what resources they lack and what motivations drive them forward. This research aims to gain a deeper understanding of the participants' realities in an urban Thai context.  Using a qualitative perspective, with semi structured interviews, eleven interviews were conducted with a diverse group of participants who all work in the social work field in Bangkok. The theories this study focuses on are Street-Level Bureaucracy and ecological systems theories. The data reveals several recurring challenges through all groups, such as limited funding, staff shortage, emotional strains and bureaucratic constraints. A significant gap was identified between the increasing social needs and the institutional support available to address them. Despite these difficulties, the participants all express a desire to keep working in the field for the foreseeable future. Internal motivations rooted in compassion, a sense of community and personal values are some of the things that keep the participants active.  These insights might help and contribute to future discussions about how to better support social workers, in all fields, in Southeast Asia.

Living Among Ticks: Behavioral Patterns and Risk Consideration in the Stockholm Archipelago : Exploring Human Exposure and Protective Strategies Against Tick-Borne Diseases

    No full text
Tick-borne infections are an increasing concern in Northern Europe, particularly in regions with high levels of outdoor activity. This research examines the behavioral factors that influence an individual's exposure to ticks in the Stockholm Archipelago, with a focus on the gap between awareness and protective action. Using a survey conducted with 141 respondents, including permanent residents, seasonal visitors, and occasional guests, the research explores outdoor habits, use of protective measures, and knowledge of tick-borne infections. Findings show a high degree of engagement in tick-prone environments like forests and meadows, with common activities including hiking, gardening, and dog walking. Despite a strong general awareness of tick-related risks and high TBE vaccination coverage, nearly half of the participants reported having contracted a tick-borne infection, most commonly Lyme borreliosis. Protective behaviors were inconsistently applied, where many participants wore shorts or slippers in the forest and rarely used repellents, often citing comfort or habit as barriers. The Health Belief Model was used to frame the analysis, revealing that while most respondents recognized the risk, this did not always translate into consistent protective actions. Factors such as perceived discomfort, cultural norms, and lifestyle habits emerged as key barriers to behavior change. Dog ownership, frequency of visits to nature, and prior tick exposure were stronger predictors of risk than gender or age. This study underscores the importance of complementing public health education with interventions that address practical and cultural barriers to behavior change. Tailored strategies that consider local traditions and promote feasible protective behaviors are essential to reducing incidences of tick-borne infections in endemic regions

    No full text
As one of the largest demographics of political prisoners in Turkey and among the most incarcerated women politicians in the world, Kurdish women are able to share precious knowledge about anti-imperialist feminist struggle. Framed by Adriana Cavarero’s (2005) theory of vocal expression, Patricia Hill Collins’ (2000) notion of self-definition, and Saidiya Hartman’s (2019) critical fabulation of the Black chorus, I have conducted a text analysis of imprisoned Kurdish women MPs’ letters to understand how they practice a vocal resistance in contradiction to the binary economy that privileges political speech to Man and relegates Woman to silence or the maternal lullaby. Instead, this thesis argues that Kurdish party women practice a politics of song. Meaning, that the sound of the Kurdish party women’s voices communicate their uniqueness in excess of patriarchal scripts, creating in-between them a co-sonorous, democratic space where speech itself becomes the embodied site of political subjectivity and freedom affirmed through the sensuous act of reciprocal listening. Emerging from the rupture between their lips is a voice of “I am”, neither confined to the domestic sphere nor distanced in the guerrilla mountains, but “here”.

    No full text
This study examines how corporate capital structure changes before, during, and after the IPO-year within the Nordic context between the years 2000 and 2020. By analyzing both external and internal factors, the study aims to understand which variables explain changes in firms' debt ratios. A longitudinal research design was adopted, and panel regression models were used to isolate these effects within the same firms over time. The results indicate that the debt ratio is highest prior to the IPO, decreases during the IPO-year, and increases again post-IPO-year, findings that align with theories such as Market Timing Theory (MTT), Trade-Off Theory (TOT), and Pecking Order Theory (POT). Industry-specific differences and market conditions also influence capital structure decisions, highlighting the contextual nature of capital structure. This study contributes to the understanding of financing strategies in relation to IPOs in the Nordic context and emphasizes the importance of both internal and external factors in explaining these structural changes.
