Clothing Disposal Methods and Intention Among Nigerian Consumers : An exploratory study of common clothing disposal Practices in Nigeria

    No full text
Background: Fast fashion promotes the buying of cheap, stylish clothes that are quickly disposed of. Despite the global focus on sustainable clothing practices, little research has addressed the realities in developing countries. In Nigeria, there is a deluge of second-hand clothing bought in bulk from the developed countries that saturates local markets with less expensive options, fueling the rate of textile waste. These lower cost options lead to an increasing environmental problem, with a majority of such clothes being dumped or burnt. This underscores the need to explore the clothing disposal practices and the promotion of sustainable practices that are specific to Nigeria’s context. Purpose: Previous research on clothing waste management has mainly focused on large-scale industrial textile disposal and recycling systems while less is known about everyday consumer disposal practices in developing economies. This research explores how Nigerian consumers dispose of their clothing and the intentions to use various clothing disposal methods. Method: A qualitative study design was employed with semi-structured interviews as a primary data collection method. Twenty participants were recruited based on their diverse demographic backgrounds. The sample comprised of male and female participants 20 years and above living in Nigeria. The data from the interview were coded systematically and analyzed using thematic analysis to identify themes.   Conclusion: The findings show that the Nigerian consumers' clothing disposal is affected by a constant intention–behavior gap, which is influenced by cultural norms and infrastructural challenges. Although numerous individuals wish to recycle or donate, the reality is that many end up incinerating due to limited access and convenience. The research also indicates that disposal options differ based on variables like clothing condition, ecological consciousness, and social impact. Consequently, sustainable waste disposal strategies should be customized to fit individual circumstances by providing local infrastructure, awareness, and motivation to effectively assist their goals and encourage more sustainable practices

Online versus Offline : An Exploration of Perceived Value and Consumer Purchasing Behaviour of Running Shoes

    No full text
Background: Since the outbreak of Covid-19, online sales have skyrocketed. More people than ever choose to make their purchases online instead of from a store, due to the wide variety of products and information available, and the low effort required from a consumer. However, it is believed that for some products, such as running shoes, it is more beneficial to visit a physical store. The study will investigate if consumers now prefer purchasing running shoes online, or if offline is still the preferred channel.   Purpose: The study’s purpose is to provide retailers with sufficient information based on the results of the research to help them tailor their marketing and retailing strategies to consumers and sell running shoes as efficiently as possible. Method: To answer the research question, the study followed a quantitative approach by distributing a survey to all genders and ages. The data was analysed using frequency statistics, descriptive statistics, and Pearson Correlation to determine if there is a relationship between the five perceived values and preference for purchasing running shoes offline.   Conclusion: Results of the study show that the functional and emotional values, and partly the social and epistemic values, are the perceived values that influence consumer’s preferences for purchasing running shoes offline the most. Furthermore, the variables comfort, fit and quality, trying on shoes, help and personalised information, attachment, excitement, and knowledge are of high importance.

    No full text
Background: In the modern world, consumers are faced with an endless number of choices on online retail platforms, potentially resulting in choice delay or abandonment. This presents a significant challenge for retailers operating in a rapidly evolving digital environment, where Artificial Intelligence (AI) increasingly influences consumer behavior. To maintain a competitive advantage retailers must develop an understanding of the changing dynamics of consumer purchasing behavior and their influence on online retail platform selection to adapt their platform strategies accordingly.  Purpose: The aim of the study is to explore how consumers perceive AI-driven personalization when shopping online, and consequently, how this influences the retail platform selection, driving the evolution of online retail.  Method: To investigate the research questions, exploratory research with a mixed-method design was employed. Data was collected through a Google Form survey of online consumers who purchased in the last 12 months and semi-structured interviews with AI or Retail experts.  Conclusion: The results showcased a trend that AI-driven personalization influence consumer purchasing interest by making the decision-making process simpler and more efficient through personalized recommendations. Followingly, the concept of hyper-personalization is introduced as a driving force for the increased use of social commerce for greater tailored online shopping. Lastly, based on the findings, “Unichannel” retailing emerged as a suggestion for the future evolution of online retail, where platforms are further interlinked, easing consumers decision-making process.

The Impact of EU's CSRD on Sustainable Business Model Innovation : An exploratory study on how companies in Denmark and Sweden respond to EU’s CSRD through sustainable business model innovation

    No full text
Background: The European Union's (EU) Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) is a mandatory framework aimed at enhancing corporate transparency and aligning business practices with sustainability goals. Introduced in 2023, the CSRD requires large companies to report on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors through the double materiality assessment (DMA). While primarily focused on transparency, comparability, and accountability in sustainability reporting, the CSRD's influence may extend beyond compliance. The directive facilitates a more systemic approach for the integration of sustainability and creates conditions that may lead companies to explore their business models.  Purpose: The purpose of this study is to understand how the EU's Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive influences sustainable business model innovation (SBMI).  Method: This qualitative stduy follows an abductive approach and is based on eight semi-structured interviews with sustainability managers from large companies with over 1000 employees in Denmark and Sweden, which are subject to the CSRD as well as the requirements introduced through the Omnibus directive. The data was analysed through a thematic analysis approach.  Conclusion: The study contributed to research on how the CSRD influences SBMI in the initial stages of the implementation of the directive. The CSRD was acting as a driver for change, which strenghtens companies' capacity for integrated and systemic sustainability practices. SInce the cases were establsihed comapnies with mature business models, incremental change appeared more likely than radical change. Notably, its influence is most evident in how organizations approach value creation and delivery such as the allocation of ressources, data management, internal processes and capability development. This reflects a shift in strategic focus rather than altering their fundamental value proposition and market position.

Green Tags, Real Impact : A study on the impact of Eco-Labeling on Swedish Consumers’ Purchase Intentions: A mixed method study in the fashion industry

    No full text
Background and Problem: With growing awareness of environmental challenges, consumers are increasingly inclined to consider sustainability in their fashion choices. Eco-labels and sustainability certifications have emerged as tools to guide ethical consumption. However, consumer skepticism, particularly toward green washing and limited understanding of label credibility present barriers to sustainable purchasing. In Sweden, a country known for its environmental consciousness, the actual impact of eco-labels on consumer behavior remains under-researched. Purpose: This study aims to explore how eco-labeling and sustainability certifications influence Swedish consumers’ attitudes, purchase intentions, and willingness to pay for sustainable fashion. It investigates how certified eco-labels shape consumer decision-making by assessing key behavioral variables, including attitudes toward sustainable brands, likelihood of purchase, and price sensitivity. Additionally, the study examines the role of consumer trust, awareness of sustainability issues, and perceived credibility of third-party versus self-declared eco-labels. Focus is placed on consumers’ understanding of the environmental and social impacts of the fashion industry and their susceptibility to green washing. Method: A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining quantitative and qualitative data to explore consumer responses to eco-labeling in sustainable fashion. The quantitative component consisted of a Choice-Based Conjoint (CBC) survey, administered through Qualtrics, with a final sample of 186 responses. Data were analyzed using SPSS, applying multiple analytical techniques including Multinomial Logistic Regression (MLR), One-Way ANOVA, and cross-tabulations to examine the influence of attributes such as price, material, brand, and type of eco-label on purchase likelihood. The qualitative component included 13 semi-structured interviews, thematically analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s (2006) framework. Data triangulation was used to cross-validate findings and provide a comprehensive understanding by integrating statistical results with contextual insights from consumer narratives. Conclusion: This study concludes that while Swedish consumers’ express strong interest in sustainable fashion, their purchasing behavior is largely influenced by trust in certified eco-labels, perceived brand transparency, and awareness of environmental impacts. However, price sensitivity and confusion about label credibility often hinder action, revealing a gap between sustainable intentions and actual behavior. Strengthening certification credibility and brand communication may help bridge this gap and support more ethical consumer choices

This study addresses monologic oral presentations in the Swedish subject at upper secondary school, with a particular focus on speech anxiety. It is based on the problem that many pupils experience nervousness and self-consciousness when speaking in front of the class, which can negatively impact their performance. The aim is to explore pupils’ experiences of oral presentation and whether a rhetorical exercise in characterization, drawn from the classical progymnasmata tradition, can reduce their speech anxiety by creating distance from the self. The study was conducted in an upper secondary class, where pupils first completed a questionnaire about their experiences with oral presentations. Following this, they participated in a lesson involving characterization exercises, which was then complemented by a focus group interview. The theoretical framework of the study is grounded in a sociocultural perspective, with particular attention to cultural artifacts. The study shows that oral presentations in the Swedish subject are often characterized by nervousness and self-consciousness, linked to the fear of being judged. These feelings are not solely individual but have a social dimension, as pupils experience a sense of solidarity in their challenges. Rhetorical exercises such as characterization can serve as cultural tools to reduce speech anxiety by creating distance from the self and shifting focus toward content. In this way, they can support a more inclusive pedagogy that frames speech anxiety as a shared challenge rather than a personal failure

Short-Term Rentals And The Swedish Housing Market : An Empirical Investigation of Airbnb's Impact On Property Prices

    No full text
This thesis examines how short-term rental (STR) activity, proxied by Airbnb listing intensity, affects housing prices in Sweden. Using municipality-level monthly data from 2014 to 2019, merged with Airbnb activity measures, the analysis employs pooled OLS, fixed effects, and then a Bartik-style instrumental variable approach to address endogeneity. While OLS suggests a positive association, fixed effects models reveal no significant relationship after controlling for time-invariant factors. The IV estimates indicate a significant positive effect, implying Airbnb growth may increase housing prices in the Swedish context. A heterogeneity analysis explores differences across rural, mixed, and metropolitan municipalities. The findings highlight the importance of robust methods in STR research and contribute new evidence from the Swedish housing market. Policy implications and directions for future research on supply dynamics and rental markets are discussed

Estimating the Elusive Costs of Poor Data Quality in MNCs:A Hybrid Model Approach

    No full text
Abstract This thesis explores the hidden costs of poor data quality in multinational organizations and proposes a practical model for estimating these costs. While prior research has addressed the technical dimensions of data quality, less attention has been given to the operational inefficiencies, time losses, strategic setbacks that often go unmeasured. The study adopts a pragmatic research philosophy and uses a qualitative, exploratory design to address this gap. Primary data was collected through nine semi-structured interviews with data management and governance professionals, while secondary data was drawn from academic frameworks (including TDABC and COLDQ) and industry reports. Qualitative content analysis was applied to identify key cost drivers such as rework, hidden time loss, opportunity costs, governance gaps, and organizational fragmentation. These findings were triangulated with secondary sources to develop and refine the Hybrid Data Quality Cost Model (H-DQCM), a scenario-based tool designed to help organizations estimate hidden costs even in decentralized or fragmented environments. The study concludes that poor data quality imposes significant but underestimated burdens on organizations and that even rough cost estimation can improve cost visibility, governance effectiveness, and strategic decision-making. The findings offer both practical recommendations for managers and theoretical contributions to the field of data quality management

Today's advancement in technology have increased the use of digital surveillance in the world. It is a trend that's seen all over the world and this thesis will explore the increasing digital surveillance within the EU. The reasoning behind these new measures is often stated as to protect citizens and combat crime, which in this case is child sexual exploitation online. The question then becomes, are the measures an overreach and how do they affect citizens privacy and fundamental rights? In addition, the aim of this paper is to examen how the EU is striving to improve its monitoring under the guise of security and safety, additionally how his will affect citizens' rights. It explores whether the EU's Chat Control legislation marks a shift toward a surveillance-oriented state and how it affects the balance between surveillance and fundamental rights. For this bachelor-thesis semi-structured interviews with legal and technical experts were utilized and data was analysed through a thematic analysis. The EU has implemented protection in the form of the general data protection regulation (GDPR) however, there are new legislations that are being pushed forward that raises doubts, including the proposed “Chat Control”, which will be further discussed in this thesis. Chat Control’s main aim is to detect the spread of illegal material mainly child pornography. This is done by automatically scanning private communication, which may lead to the end of end-to-end encrypted messages. Many argue that this legislation constitutes mass surveillance which is in direct violation with EUs fundamental rights and declaration of human rights specifically the right to privacy and the right to freedom of expression among many others. Another concern is that the technology for this legislation may be misused, in the form of spying on citizens.  In conclusion, the findings highlight a conflict within the EU over digital security and human rights, as the Chat Control debate highlights the challenges of technology outpacing legal and social framewor
