    No full text
The study is carried out as a degree project by two students studying the programme Building Technology: Building Design with Architecture at the School of Engineering in Jönköping. The work is written in collaboration with the company Skövdevillan AB, which is active in house manufacturing in the Skaraborg area. The study aims to investigate a selection of their house models and improve them based on defined achitectural housing qualities. The main methodological approach for the work is design thinking, which aims at problem solving and putting the user at the centre to approach the problem. For each research question, different methodological choices and data collection techniques will be applied to achieve the desired result. Methods used are explanatory survey, case study and design research while data collection techniques used are interviews and the MAB analysis tool resulting in design proposals supported by a questionnaire. A thematization of the interview material resulted in seven themes regarding the advantages and disadvantages of the different floor plans from a housing perspective. These themes were, for example, open floor plans and storage. The work is based on MAB, Manual for analysing housing qualities in villas, which assesses eleven architectural housing qualities. The manual is an adjusted version of MAB, Manual for analysing housing qualities, originally created by research architects from Chalmers University of Technology. All three villa recieved an overall rating of bronze based on the MAB´s limit values, which shows clear potential for improvement. The new design proposals for the three floor plans recieved an overall rating of gold based on the same limit value as previous analyses. It was noted from the interviews that some parts of the floor plans need to be improved, which was also confirmed by the MAB analyses of the original floor plans. New floor plan proposals were developed to fulfil more housing qualities. The MAB that is the starting point of the work is based on research on housing qualities, which gives the work basic premises and a method for comparison. At the same time, for example, more research on residents' perceptions of villas could have been included more to create a diverse approach. In general, the study contributes to social sustainability by creating pleasant housing and economic sustainability by efficiency improvement of floor plans in new construction

Exploring the Adoption and Challenges of BIM in Swedish Transport Administration Infrastructure project

    No full text
This study explores the implementation and challenges of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in infrastructure projects within the Swedish Transport Administration (STA). Through a combination of a literature review and semi-structured interviews with ten STA project managers, the research identifies both the benefits and obstacles associated with BIM use. The findings demonstrate that BIM significantly enhances project coordination, improves design quality, supports visualization, and facilitates better planning and decision-making particularly in complex infrastructure projects. Despite these clear advantages, BIM adoption remains inconsistent across STA projects. The results show several key barriers lack of technical knowledge, unclear internal guidelines, resistance to change, and the perception that BIM tools are too complex. Even experienced BIM users expressed uncertainty about how to apply the technology strategically. Rogers’ Diffusion of Innovations theory, shows that study BIM is perceived to offer relative advantages, low compatibility with existing workflows, high perceived complexity, and limited trialability and observability hinder its widespread adoption. To overcome these challenges, the study recommends a systemic approach that includes clearer BIM objectives, targeted training for project managers, simplification of tools, and the sharing of successful case studies. These actions are aligned with Rogers innovation attributes and are essential to realizing BIMs potential within STA. Ultimately, the findings suggest that BIMs technical value is recognized but without strong organizational support and strategic alignment, its broader adoption remains limited

Effect of microstructure on corrosion of cast aluminium alloys

    No full text
This project explores the impact of microstructure on the corrosion behaviour of cast aluminium-silicon alloys, in both primary and recycled variants of the AlSi7-alloy. It evaluates the influence of composition of the alloy and surface condition on corrosion resistance by comparing as-cast skin and polished samples. Four aluminium alloys are examined: one primary alloy and three secondary variants with varying levels of iron, zinc, cooper, and vanadium content. Microstructural characterization is performed using optical microscope, scanning electron (SEM), optical emission spectroscopy (OES), and image analysis to identify the phases of the alloys. Corrosion behaviour is examined using polarization testing and statistical analysis of pitting corrosion, with salt spray exposure used specifically to evaluate pit formation. The results reveal that alloying elements significantly influence intermetallic compounds formation and the characteristics of corrosion pits, such as their depth or distribution in the sample. The comparison between as-cast skin and polished samples revealed that surface condition has a significant role in corrosion behaviour. As-cast skin samples displayed distinct corrosion characteristics compared to polished ones. These findings highlight the importance of both composition and surface treatment in optimizing the corrosion resistance of recycled aluminium alloys

From neutrality to necessity: the language that shaped Sweden’s NATO membership : A discourse analysis of how safety, threat, security, and responsibility are constructed in Swedish media discourse during the NATO accession process

In the spring of 2022, Sweden’s application to join NATO was presented as both logical and inevitable. But how did it come to be seen that way? This study explores how the concepts of safety, threat, security and responsibility were articulated in Swedish media discourse during the intense period from January to September 2022, and how language helped shape the boundaries of security policy. Through a critical discourse analysis of 90 editorial articles from three national newspapers, we show how certain understandings of security are presented as natural, reasonable and necessary, while alternative perspectives are silenced or marginalized. NATO is framed as the obvious solution to an overarching threat, while voices advocating diplomacy or questioning militarization are portrayed as unrealistic or irresponsible. The analysis draws on securitization theory (Copenhagen School), Laclau & Mouffe’s discourse theory and Fairclough’s model of critical discourse analysis. Our results reveal how affect, moralization and repetition not only shape the content of the discourse, but define the very limits of what is perceived as politically possible. At a time of geopolitical transformation, it is not only decisions that shape the future, but also the language used to justify them.

Cultural heritage and accessibility: Challenges and solutions in the planning and implementation of adaptations in historically valuable buildings

    No full text
Introduction (and aim) – This study explores the challenges and possibilities between balancing accessibility requirements and preservation of cultural heritage during renovation of historically significant buildings. Swedish legislation demands both functional accessibility and protection of cultural values, and with these coexisting demands comes a risk of conflict. The aim of this thesis is to investigate challenges that arise in these projects, how involved parties interact to manage them, and what aesthetic and technical solutions are applied in practice. Method – The study is based on a qualitative approach, using two case studies, Kungsbroskolan and Tingshuset both located in Tidaholm, Sweden. Empirical data was collected through semi-structured interviews with architects, property owners and an engineer, as well as appropriate documents and site observations to achieve reliable results. Results – The results show three major types of challenges which include economic limitations, conflicts regarding legal requirements and technical limitations. All respondents emphasized on the excessive cost of accessibility adaptation in older buildings and the uncertainty of how far legal deviations can affect the application of these changes. Although such limitations were present, successful adaption was achieved by thoughtful planning, early collaboration between involved parties and by using design strategies and materials that aligned with the buildings historical character. These methods and strategies led to better integration of accessibility without having to compromise the building’s character. Analysis – The empirical data shows that it is possible to achieve accessibility implementations without compromising the cultural and historical value of the building nor the structure if solutions are planned early and sensitively. Material choice, placement as well as the reuse of existing building elements played a central role in achieving the goal. While economic constraints often limited ambitions, the use of traditional design techniques helped balance function and aesthetics. The analysis confirms previous research suggesting that integrating rather than compromising is possible in accessibility design for buildings with high cultural value. Discussion – The study highlights that while technical guidelines and legal frameworks exist, outcome depends on early coordination, the available resources, and the interpretive decisions made by involved actors. The findings confirm the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and suggest that accessibility and preservation are not conflicting goals. Instead of having the right stakeholders they can coexist when addressed with the right architectural awareness, planning and shared understanding of cultural values.

Caring in a digital age : Supporting women undergoing radiotherapy for breast cancer with a digital information tool addressing health literacy, distress, and self-efficacy

    No full text
A breast cancer diagnosis often brings profound emotional, physical, and practical challenges. Navigating treatment requires engagement with complex health information, yet emotional strain and differences in health literacy can hinder understanding and heighten distress. Radiotherapy, a central part of treatment, imposes specific demands that call for tailored preparation and support. The aim of this work was to develop and evaluate a digital information tool to support women undergoing radiotherapy. The focus was on how such a tool may reduce distress and support self-efficacy through tailored information responsive to diverse health literacy needs. Co-designed with stakeholders to ensure rigour, relevance, and reach, the tool combines virtual reality technology, enabling users to familiarise themselves with the radiotherapy environment, with accessible, user-friendly information. This thesis comprises four sub-studies: Paper I details the participatory design process; Paper II reports a pilot randomised controlled trial; Paper III explores women’s experiences of the tool and their broader information processes through qualitative interviews; and Paper IV applies exploratory data analysis to identify distress patterns across patient subgroups. An integrative synthesis combined these findings to reveal mechanisms through which the tool influenced understanding, emotional responses, and engagement. The findings demonstrate that digital health interventions can complement, rather than replace, in-person consultations, supporting knowledge, sense of control, and active participation in care. Participants reported clear benefits, highlighting the tool’s adaptability, its capacity to reduce uncertainty, and its shareability with loved ones. While statistical analyses did not show significant effects, the experiential benefits underscore the clinical relevance of digital solutions, indicating their potential to enhance comprehension and support patients throughout complex treatments such as radiotherapy.

Better to make one concern report too many then one too few, right? : A qualitative interview study on social worker´s and preschool teacher´s thoughts and experiences regarding mandatory reporting

    No full text
Professionals working with children and young people have a mandatory reporting duty, which means that they are legally obliged to report concerns about a child who may be at risk to social services. To ensure that the child and their family receive help at an early stage, it is crucial that there reports are submitted. Once a report, known as a concern report is made, it becomes the responsibility of social services to decide whether an investigation should be initiated. However, previous research shows that relatively fem reports are submitted from preschools, raising questions about what prevents these reports from being made. The overall aim of the study has been to examine how social workers, and preschool teachers interpret the concept of "children at risk" and to gain an understanding of their perceptions and experiences regarding the mandatory reporting duty. The study is qualitative and is based on eight semi-structured interviews with preschool teachers and social workers. The material has been analyzed using thematic analysis, where we searched for patterns. The study´s results have been analyzed using parts of Bronfenbrenner´s model, Danermark´s collaboration theory and previous research. Our findings show that several factors can influence preschool teacher´s willingness to file a report. A fear of damaging the strong relationships built over many years with both guardians and children is a significant barrier that seems to have a considerable impact. There is also concern absout the possibility of submitting an incorrect report, which kan lead to self-doubt and hesitation. A lack of knowledge about identifying children at risk, as well as limited understanding of social service´s work, can create obstacles in the collaboration that is essential for identifying children suspected of being at risk.

Tragedy as strategy : A qualitative study on non-governmental aid organizations' visual communication of various conflicts

    No full text
This study has examined the visual communication strategies employed by non-governmental aid organizations on social media in context of conflict settings of which are aimed at fostering engagement and action, with a particular focus on both established conflicts and recently escalated conflicts. By analysing the Instagram posts of specifically four non-governmental humanitarian aid organizations, consisting of UNICEF Sweden, Red Cross, Save the Children and Doctors Without Borders, the study aims to get an understanding of how these organizations visually communicate in the context of conflicts. To achieve the objective of this study, a qualitative analysis was conducted with the use of both semiotic and rhetorical frameworks to examine the nature of the organizations visual communication, and to further identify any differences in their communicative approach and strategies.  The conducted analysis reveals notable differences within the organizations visual communicative approaches, such as distinctions between how established and recently escalated conflicts are portrayed and communicated in their social media to create engagement, along with differences between the communicative strategies within the organizations themselves. The analysis reveals that posts related to recently escalated conflicts focus on visualizing the urgent situations through powerful imagery, which are depicting children or people in fear or distress, to elicit a greater emotional response in order to create engagement. In contrast, posts related to established conflicts are visualized to show the organization's efforts and progress of the aid within the conflict situation, rather than visualizing the urgency of the conflict, which perceives the conflict as less urgent due to the lack of emphasization of the acute engagement

A False Consciousness or Real Change? : A False Consciousness or Real Change? How Female Gender Norms Are Represented in Popular Culture: A Qualitative Content Analysis of Sex and the City and And Just Like That...

    No full text
Denna uppsats undersöker hur kvinnliga genusnormer representeras i de populära tv-serierna Sex and the City och And Just Like That… genom en kvalitativ innehållsanalys.
