Measuring efficiency and effectiveness improvements, when implementing machine learning in supply chain planning practices in engineer-to-order settings
Engineer-to-Order (ETO) settings present unique challenges for Supply Chain Planning (SCP) due to their inherent complexity, high customization requirements, and data scarcity. While machine learning (ML) offers promising opportunities to improve planning processes, its implementation in ETO environments remains limited. This paper investigates the relationship between performance measurement and ML adoption in SCP processes within ETO settings. Through a conceptual framework based on literature review and empirical observations from nine industrial cases, the initiation and evaluation of ML implementation in complex planning environments is explored. Our findings reveal that, contrary to traditional improvement frameworks, ML adoption in ETO settings is not primarily driven by existing performance metrics. Instead, organizations implement ML based on perceived challenges, contradictions in planning processes, and exploratory interest. We identify a bidirectional relationship where performance measurements can drive ML implementation, but also where ML implementation necessitates the establishment of new or refined metrics to evaluate its impact. This relationship is particularly critical for building trust in ML applications, as appropriate performance measurements provide mechanisms for developing both cognitive and emotional trust. The study contributes a refined conceptual model that integrates perspectives from performance measurement, technology adoption, and trust theory. For practitioners, it offers guidance on initiating ML implementation when performance measurement maturity is low, emphasizing the importance of establishing appropriate metrics even when adoption is driven by challenges rather than measurements. For scholars, this study touches multiple domains and extends current understanding of technology adoption pathways in SCP and highlights the need for ETO-specific approaches to performance measurement when implementing ML solutions in environments characterized by customization, variability, and limited historical data

District nurses' experiences of acute situations when patients' health status deteriorates in home healthcare : A qualitative interview study
Background: Home healthcare manages an increasingly complex and multimorbid population, increasing the risk of acute deteriorations in the home environment. Despite district nurse’s central role, research has largely overlooked their specific experiences and challenges in acute situations, motivating this study. Aim: To describe district nurses’ experiences of acute situations when patients’ health conditions deteriorate in home healthcare. Method: A qualitative design with an inductive approach was used. Through purposive sampling, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 district nurses (8 women, 2 men, aged 30–63) with experience in home healthcare from three municipalities in Sweden. Data were analyzed with Graneheim and Lundman’s content analysis. Results: Three main categories emerged: The district nurse’s professional competence in acute situations, focused on professional confidence; Systemic conditions for safe care in the home, where the importance of equipment and care plans was highlighted; and the significance of interprofessional collaborations in managing continued care during acute situations, emphasizing cooperation with primary care and ambulance services. Conclusion: District nurse’s competence is central in acute home healthcare situations but is impeded by structural deficiencies. Ensuring safe, person-centered care requires adequate resources and interprofessional collaboration
Child health service nurses' experiences of supporting breastfeeding among mothers : - A qualitative interview study
Background: The World Health Organization recommends exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of life, as it provides important health benefits for both mother and child. Despite this, breastfeeding rates in Sweden continue to decline. Breastfeeding can be challenging for mothers, and child health service nurses’ play a key role in providing breastfeeding support. Aim: The aim of the study was to explore child health services nurses’ experiences of supporting mothers with breastfeeding. Method: A qualitative design with an inductive approach was used. Twelve child health services nurses’ from southern and central Sweden were interviewed, and the data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis according to Elo and Kyngäs. Results: The analysis generated three main categories: meeting each mother based on her individual circumstances, guiding and supporting breastfeeding, and collaborating with others in the mother’s surroundings. The child health service nurses’ identified mothers’ needs through dialogue and observation. Encouragement, hope, and advice were central to the support. Partner involvement and collaboration with other professionals and services were important. Conclusion: Breastfeeding support should be tailored to mother’s needs. This requires child health service nurses’ to listen and respond accordingly. Despite challenges, trust, communication and collaboration underpin effective support
Resilient Heritage: The Role of Swedish Native Breeds in Sustainable Agriculture and Social–Ecological Resilience : A Qualitative Study of Breeders’ Perspectives in Sweden
This thesis explores how Swedish native livestock breeds contribute to sustainability and resilience within agriculture and society. As industrial farming has favored uniform, high-yield breeds, many native varieties have declined, despite their ecological, cultural, and economic importance. Using a qualitative research design, the study draws on semi-structured interviews with breeders, associations, and conservation practitioners to examine how these animals function within a social–ecological systems framework. The findings show that native breeds strengthen ecological resilience through genetic diversity, climate adaptation, and biodiversity maintenance in semi-natural pastures. They foster social and cultural resilience by preserving traditional knowledge, sustaining rural identity, and connecting people to landscapes. Economically, they support local diversification and niche markets, though limited policy and market support continue to pose challenges. Overall, the study concludes that conserving and actively using native breeds should be recognized as a key strategy for sustainable development. Beyond safeguarding genetic resources, these animals represent living biocultural heritage that bridges ecology, economy, and culture. Supporting their continued use and conservation will enhance Sweden’s capacity to build resilient, sustainable agricultural systems for the future.
Zero Trust Micro-Segmentation in Cloud Environments: A Systematic Literature Review of Strategies, Challenges, and Future Trends
Cloud environments, with dynamic scalability and distributed architecture, face security challenges such as lateral movement, unauthorized access, insider threats, and Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs). Traditional perimeter-based defences struggle to address these risks, as they lack visibility and control over east–west traffic between cloud endpoints (VMs/containers). Zero Trust Architecture (ZTA) mitigates these risks through least privilege access and continuous verification. Micro-segmentation, a pillar of ZTA, divides networks into fine-grained isolated segments to enforce granular security policies, thereby reducing the attack surface, containing breaches, enhancing control over east-west traffic, and mitigating lateral movement. This systematic literature review (SLR) analyses 39 primary studies (2016–2025) to summarize the latest techniques and algorithms used to implement ZTA micro-segmentation to secure cloud environments and prevent attacks, while highlighting their security benefits and operational challenges. This review identified 8 different techniques with dominance of 29.1% Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and 27.3% Artificial Intelligence (AI). Research trends point towards techniques such as AI-driven adaptive segmentation and security policies, blockchain-based decentralized trust models, and quantum computing-based anomaly detection, enabling more autonomous, resilient, and context-aware ZTA micro-segmentation in cloud environments
How Do Independent Artists Market Their Music In Today’S Era?
Streaming platforms have radically changed the music industry, placing algorithmic systems at the center of artists’ visibility. This thesis studies how independent artists adapt to this new dynamic and use it to market their music. Guided by the Resource Dependence Theory, Attention Economy, and Signaling Theory, we conducted qualitative research with 16 independent artists to gain in-depth insight into release planning, encouraging fan engagement, and converting fan enthusiasm into on-platform behaviors. Rather than digging into analyzing the algorithmic performance, the study documents artists’ practices and interprets uneven outcomes through the lenses of attention capture versus retention and observable, credible signals under resource constraints. The results provide a grounded account of how artists navigate platform dynamics and offer practical implications for focusing limited effort on fewer, better-timed signals while protecting the artist's credibility. To synthesize the insights gained from interviews and leverage the theoretical frameworks, we also introduce the RSA Cycle Model, which maps a three-stage loop: developing quality and resources, encoding and delivering signals, and receiving feedback
Nurses’ Experiences of Pain Assessment in People with Dementia
Structural enablers of Organizational Ambidexterity: A Multi-Case Study on Balancing Innovation and Efficiency in Global Firms
Background. Organizational ambidexterity—the capacity to balance operational efficiency (exploitation) with innovation (exploration)—is increasingly vital for firms operating in today’s dynamic, globalized markets. While prior research has predominantly explored ambidexterity from leadership or strategic angles, less attention has been paid to how formal organizational structures enable this balance in real-world settings, especially in fast-changing environments. Purpose. This thesis addresses the need for a more contemporary and practice-oriented understanding of ambidextrous design. It investigates how multinational firms structure themselves to pursue innovation and efficiency simultaneously, and how they evolve these structures to remain adaptive over time. By doing so, the study contributes to theory by updating traditional frameworks of ambidexterity with new insights from hybrid, flexible, and digitally enabled organizational forms. Method. A qualitative multiple case study design was used to analyze two global firms from the sportswear and textile retail sectors. Data were gathered through 14 semi-structured interviews and supported by secondary sources. Thematic analysis followed the Gioia methodology to identify patterns and structure findings. Conclusion. The study identifies seven structural dimensions—covering from cross-functional collaboration to digital infrastructure and formal governance—that enable dynamic ambidexterity. A multi-layered model is proposed, showing how firms reconfigure these elements in context-specific ways. Ethical implications include the need to balance structural control with inclusivity and fairness, while sustainability emerges as an embedded goal within innovation structures. These findings advance ambidexterity theory by emphasizing a configuration-based perspective grounded in practice
Nurses’ fight against deadly bacteria: Experiences of caring for patient with multidrug-resistant bacteria : A literature review with a qualitative approach
Background: Multidrug-resistant bacteria cause great suffering for patients and represents a growing global issue. The resistance of the bacteria reduces the efficiency of antibiotics, leading to prolonged hospital stays, increased healthcare costs, and approximately 700 000 deaths globally each year. The number of deaths is expected to increase if no measures are taken to reduce the spread of multidrug- resistant bacteria. By working proactively with the prevention of transmission, nurses can enhance patient safety. Aim: To illuminate nurses’ experiences of caring for patients with multidrug-resistant bacteria in inpatient care. Method: Literature review with a qualitative and inductive approach. Articles published between 2013 - 2024 were identified using databases CINAHL and PubMed, generating 10 articles after quality assessment. The articles were evaluated using Jönköping University’s quality assessment protocol. The articles were analyzed following Friberg’s five steps (Friberg, 2022a). Results: The literature review identified three main categories with subcategories. Nurses’ dilemma (lack of knowledge and guidelines regarding multidrug-resistant bacteria, as well as fear of spreading the infection). Organizational deficiencies (increased workload as a result of extended routines and challenges in providing care). Stigmatization (barriers caused by protective equipment and consequences of isolation). Conclusion: Nurses face significant challenges in caring for patients with multidrug-resistant bacteria. Insufficient knowledge, limited information, and excessive use of protective equipment contribute to unnecessary patient suffering. Increased education can increase nurses’ awareness and thereby reduce these challenges
