Between Crisis and Normailty : Crisis Communication in a Slowly Emerging Socioeconomic Crisis: A Study of the Swedish Grocery Chain ICA’s Public Communication
In recent years, rising food prices have become a central societal issue in Sweden, placing the grocery retail sector and particularly market-leading actors such as ICA at the center of public debate and criticism. This study aims to contribute to an increased understanding of how responsibility is communicatively constructed in slowly emerging socio-economic crisis, through an analysis of ICA´s public communication concerning rising food prices. The study is conducted as a qualitative analysis of ICA and is based on a reflexive thematic analysis combined with a critical discourse analytical interpretative perspective (CDA). The empirical material consists of 24 public statements in the form of press releases and media interviews published between 2023 and 2025. The analysis draws on Situational Crisis Communication Theory (SCCT), the concept of Creeping Crisis and a constitutive perspective on communication, enabling an examination of how communication not only reflect the crisis but actively contributes to shaping its meaning. The findings show that ICA´s communication both describes the food price issue and actively shapes how the crisis is understood and how responsibility is distributed among different actors. Through expressions of empathy, responsibility shifting, normalization and advisory communication, ICA is gradually positioned as a co-affected actor rather than as directly responsible for the price increases. The study also demonstrates how responsibility shifting changes over time, moving from more explicit attributions of consumer responsibility toward an indirect legitimization of price levels through global and structural explanations. Overall, the study contributes in-depth knowledge of how commercial actors discursively construct responsibility and legitimacy in slow-moving societal crisis, an area previous research has primarily examined through the lens of acute crises and public-sector actors
Man’s Best Friend or feminism’s worst enemy? : A thematic analysis followed by a critical discourse analysis of comments on Sabrina Carpenters album cover Man’s Best Friend.
Sabrina Carpenter is one of the most popular artists today with 73.8 million monthly listeners on Spotify in 2025. In June 2025, Carpenter presented her new album cover for Man’s Best Friend, which sparked debate in the media. This study examines the themes and discourses that emerge in the audience’s interpretations of the album cover from an Instagram comment section. It also analyzes how feminism, power and norms are constructed in the comments. Based on Stuart Hall’s theory of encoding and decoding, a thematic analysis was conducted followed by a critical discourse analysis based on Fairclough’s model and Rosalind Gill’s theory of postfeminist sensibility. The result show two dominant feminist discourses. The first one is a postfeminist discourse where the cover is interpreted as self-determination and empowering. The second one is a critical feminist discourse where the cover is interpreted as harmful and reproduces patriarchal norms. Negotiating discourses also emerge where ambivalence is expressed around the boundary between self-determination and sexualization. This study also shows how power in the comments is constructed as both individual choice and structural, and how norms around female sexuality are shaped through discussions about responsibility and morality. In addition, this study highlights how the debate is not only about the artist or the image, but about broader discussions about feminism, power and norms. It also highlights the audience’s active role in creating meaning around representations in social media.
Digital Judges or Engaged Audiences? : A Qualitative Study of Gender, Morality, and Negative Evaluations in Online Comment Sections about Robinson
Digital comment sections have become important spaces where audience opinions and values are made visible. Reality television often creates strong reactions, and participants in these programs are frequently judged and discussed on social media. This study examines how language is used in comment sections connected to the Swedish reality television program Robinson to express, reinforce, and sometimes question negative views of the participants. The aim of the study is to analyze how misogynistic expressions, moral judgments, and other forms of negative language are created through interaction between users. The study focuses on how language is used to judge participants’ behavior, performance, and personal value, and how these judgments are strengthened when other users agree or repeat similar comments. The material consists of comments collected from posts on Robinson’s official Facebook page. The analysis is based on critical discourse analysis and focuses on how language shapes meaning, norms, and social boundaries in the comment sections. The study is guided by earlier research on reality television, audience participation online, gender, and evaluative language. The results show that the comment sections work as social spaces where participants are judged based on ideas about morality, performance, and gender. Negative comments do not only focus on what participants do in the program, but also describe them as certain types of people. Female participants are judged more harshly, especially when they show emotions or make strategic choices. The study also shows that repeated comments and agreement help make negative language seem more normal, although some users question or challenge these views. In conclusion, the study shows that language in comment sections does not only reflect audience opinions, but also plays an active role in shaping and spreading ideas about gender, morality, and value in a reality television context

From Invisible Risk to Serious Consequences : Unit Managers’ Descriptions of the Risk of Insider Leaks and Its Potential Implications for Social Services and Social Work
The purpose of the study was to examine how unit managers, within social services, describe the risk of insider leaks and the potential consequences this risk may have for social work. The empirical data were collected through five semi-structured interviews with unit managers working in social services who exercise statutory authority. The data were further analyzed using a thematic analysis approach, initially forming two main categories based on the study's two research questions: Factors and Consequences. During the analysis, six themes were identified: Individual and organizational context, Systems, control, and responsibility, Descriptions of risk in relation to one’s own organization, Client trust in social services, Trust within the organization, and Work environment. The results show that unit managers within social services describe insider leaks as a real but difficult-to-assess threat. Furthermore, the results indicate a tendency to associate insider risk with specific organizational or structural conditions rather than with one’s own organization, along with recurring references to organizational control systems. The results also highlight how an insider leak is perceived as potentially having serious consequences for both the internal work environment and clients’ trust. Based on the study, it can be concluded that the risk of insider leaks affects trust between social services and the public, as well as the work environment. Internal trust plays a crucial role in enabling safe social work within social services and in managing and preventing risks such as insider leaks
From Hero to Controversy : Collective Memory in Debates of Three Swedish Statues
The essay analyses statues and monuments contested during the Black Lives Matter movement through the lens of collective and agonistic memory. By examining the statues and the debates surrounding them, it explores how collective memories of the figures or events commemorated are constructed, challenged, and negotiated. Particular attention is given to the actors involved, the symbolic meanings assigned to the statues, and the actions proposed within these debates. The study analyses newspaper articles from June 2020 that address the public debate on statues in Sweden during the Black Lives Matter movement, with a focus on monuments depicting Carl von Linné, Louis de Geer, and Karl XII. Using material collected through targeted searches in the Mediearkivet/Retriever database, the study examines opinion pieces, debate articles, and journalistic texts that reflect a range of actors and perspectives. The analysis applies Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis to identify recurring arguments in the debates, allowing for a comparative examination of how collective memory is constructed and contested across different statues. Statues and monuments are not just historical markers but expressions of collective memory and identity. By emphasizing certain figures and events, they shape narratives of the past that gain meaning in the present. When these narratives are challenged, as seen in the Black Lives Matter movement’s critique of colonial and racist legacies, debates over statues become arenas where competing memories, power, and representation are negotiated rather than simple disputes over physical preservation. The findings show that the debate over controversial statues is characterized by conflicting historical interpretations and values, rooted in competing collective memories. The statues are not perceived as neutral objects but as active carriers of meaning that can be experienced as either inclusive or exclusionary depending on perspective. The study also demonstrates that there is no single agreed-upon solution for how such statues should be handled, with proposals ranging from removal or relocation to museums to preservation combined with contextualization. Overall, the debates reflect broader questions about how history should be interpreted, whose voices are prioritized in public space, and how society engages with the past considering contemporary values.
#Tobaccofree = unharmful? : A quantitative content analysis of the communication from four leading nicotine pouch brands on Instagram
Professionals' views on youth crime
The purpose of the study is to investigate how professionals view juvenile delinquency among young boys and girls. To carry out the study, a qualitative interview study with thematic analysis as the analysis method was used. The study had five interviewees who formed the study's data base and these people all had connections to social work and young people in juvenile delinquency. The study used a semi-structured interview as the interview method and where the interview questions were based on an interview guide. The theories that have been used to analyze the study's data base are Bronfenbrenner's developmental ecology model and Lipsky's theory of Grassroots Bureaucracy. In the results, there are various themes that will be discussed. Based on the themes that emerged, the young girls' exposure to prostitution and their path into gang crime was one of the most important contributions to this study. The professionals sees an increase in prostitution among young girls, which they also express concern about. Another theme that also stood out was that the professionals considered that gang crime was high among young people. Although gang crime is not a new phenomenon, it was considered important to portray it because it was a major problem based on the professionals' experiences. Other themes that appeared in the study were challenges but also areas for development. When it came to challenges, it was the increasing prostitution among young girls that worried one of the professionals in the interviews but also creating relationships with young people. Finally, what can be seen as the smallest theme was attitudes among young people, the professionals said that there were to some extent differences in attitudes between the sexes, and where boys could be perceived as nice while girls as arrogant and renunciative
