    Informal feedback in the workplace : A qualitative study

    Syftet med denna studie var att undersöka medarbetares upplevelser av informell feedback i arbetet. Studien genomfördes med en kvalitativ forskningsansats och totalt 12 deltagare valdes ut genom ett bekvämlighetsurval. Kravet för urvalet var att alla skulle motta informell feedback i organisationen de var verksamma i. Data samlades in genom semistrukturerade intervjuer som spelades in och transkriberades. Därefter utfördes en tematisk analys av data som resulterade i tre huvudteman. Studiens resultat visade att deltagarna upplevde att informell feedback bidrog till deras motivation, främjade deras professionella utveckling och gjorde att de kände sig uppskattade. Resultatet diskuterades i relation till tidigare forskning, där tydliga överensstämmelser identifierades som sedan diskuterades. I diskussionen framkom det att informell feedback, speciellt positiv och konstruktiv motiverade och utvecklade medarbetare. En feedbackvänlig organisationskultur där feedback gavs med respekt och var en del av det dagliga arbetet, bidrog till främjandet av informell feedback.

    Enhancing Material Flow Efficiency : A case study at Cummins in Lindesberg

    Cummins in Lindesberg has identified a need to improve the efficiency of the material flow for front axle beams, a process that has been deprioritized in favor of other, more value-adding flows. Currently, the material is handled manually by operators and transported using forklifts, which poses both efficiency challenges and significant safety risks. As a result, the company is considering the implementation of Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV). The purpose of this study was to analyze the current state of the material flow and evaluate whether the necessary conditions for implementing AGV are met. Data collection was conducted through observations, interviews, literature review, and informal discussions. The analysis combined empirical findings with theoretical frameworks related to internal logistics and automation. The study reveals that relocating the sequencing area, currently situated in the center of the factory, can shorten transport distances and eliminate two handling points. This would lead to a more streamlined and efficient flow. Additionally, the analysis shows that Cummins meets key requirements for AGV implementation, including environmental, operational, and economic conditions. The conclusion is that the implementation of a AGV system is both feasible and potentially cost-effective for the front axle beam flow at Cummins. It is recommended that the company first carries out the proposed layout and process changes to prepare for automation, which would contribute to improved efficiency and workplace safety.Cummins i Lindesberg har identifierat ett behov av att effektivisera materialflödet för framaxelbalken då detta flöde blivit eftersatt till förmån för andra mer värdeskapande flöden. Dagens hantering sker manuellt av operatörer och transporten sker med truck, vilket innebär både ett ineffektivt flöde och en säkerhetsrisk. Mot denna bakgrund har företaget övervägt möjligheten att införa förarlösa automatiserade fordon (AGV). Syftet med studien har varit att analysera det nuvarande materialflödet och undersöka om det finns förutsättningar för att implementera AGV i materialflödet för framaxelbalken. Datainsamling har skett bland annat genom observationer, intervjuer samt litteraturstudier. Studien har även kopplat nuläget till relevant teori kring internlogistik och automatisering. Analysen visar att en omplacering av sekvenseringsområdet, som idag ligger centralt i fabriken, kan minska den totala transportsträckan och eliminera två hanteringspunkter. Detta förenklar materialflödet och skapar bättre förutsättningar för en framtida automatisering. Vidare visar studien att Cummins uppfyller grundläggande krav för en implementering av AGV gällande miljömässiga, hanteringsmässiga och ekonomiska faktorer. Slutsatsen är att en AGV-lösning är möjlig och ekonomiskt lönsam för hanteringen av framaxelbalken hos Cummins. Det rekommenderas att företaget genomför de föreslagna förändringarna i layout och processer som ett första steg mot automatisering, vilket kommer att förbättra både effektivitet och arbetsmiljö

    Learning and Change.A Comparative Study of Gothenburg Municipality’s Reception of Syrian and Ukrainian Asylum Seekers, 2015-2025.

    This study examines the strategies and learning processes that the municipality of Gothenburg developed for its shelter policies in the face of refugee influxes respectively from Syria in 2015 and Ukraine in 2022. The focus of the study is to understand how their responses evolved and how their housing strategies were shaped in these two situations. To this end, semi-structured interviews were conducted with municipal staff, and policy documents were analyzed. Thematic analysis was chosen for the analysis of the findings. As a result, organizational adaptation and learning, top-down dynamics in multi-level refugee governance, challenges in implementation and responses in local government, feedback mechanisms, institutional burdens and responsibility sharing, and multi-stakeholder collaboration and collaborative solutions were reached. While the findings show that the municipality was more coordinated in 2022 than in 2015 and had developed certain regular structures with agreements with various stakeholders, they also highlighted the constant variability of practices due to certain constraints. Examples of these constraints include the variability of national policies, the variability in the legal status of refugees, the variability of refugee size and the lack of housing in Gothenburg. This study contributes to the migration management and organizational learning literature on refugee reception. Specifically on how large municipalities responded to this two focusing influxes.

    The passive continent? : How Africa is portrayed in Swedish history books in upper secondary school

    The aim of this study is to examine how Africa is portrayed in a selection of Swedish history textbooks during the period 1995-2018 in upper secondary school. The questions that the study is based on is how Africa is portrayed during the period, how it changes during the period and why it changes. The main method used in this study is qualitative content analysis, meaning different themes have been identified in the textbooks. Earlier research shows that there exists a pattern in how Africa is portrayed in educational texts where the continent and its people is seen as less developed than Europe. Furthermore, the theoretical framework that has been used in the study is postcolonial theory. The result shows that Africa is seen as the origin of the human species and that the earliest humans differentiated from the modern one because of the simpler way of life. When it comes to the era of colonialism and imperialism Africa is mostly portrayed as a passive continent who does not contribute to moving history forward. Furthermore, Africa is portrayed as a continent struggling with poverty, famine, disasters and lack of democracy, which is explained by the postcolonial struggle Africa has suffered and how the countries have failed to implement western capitalist models. The result also shows that textbooks portray ancient Egypt as a highly developed, complex society which differs from how the rest of Africa is portrayed. South Africa also gets a lot of recognition in the textbooks even though it is mostly the European history that is being told. Some of the newer textbooks highlights Africa’s history before the European involvement in the continent, and former African kingdoms such as Mali, Ghana, Songau, Hausa, Kanem and Zimbabwe, portraying Africa as a continent who has rich history and who has had developed societies before the Europeans involvement. Overall, the result of the study is in line what with previous research shows and when the result is analysed with postcolonial theory it highlights some of the issues that postcolonial theory points at.     Language development methods in a multilingual classroom : A qualitative study on which strategies social studies teachers use to promote language development of multilingual students

    Studien undersöker hur lärare i samhällskunskap arbetar språkutvecklande i ett flerspråkigt klassrum i årskurs 7–9. Syftet med studien är att bidra med kunskap om hur lärare i samhällskunskap arbetar för att främja språkutvecklingen hos flerspråkiga elever i årskurs 7–9, samt vilka möjligheter och utmaningar lärarna ser med det arbetet. Studiens frågeställningar lyder: Vilka strategier använder lärare i samhällskunskap för att främja språkutvecklingen hos flerspråkiga elever? Vilka möjligheter och utmaningar ser lärarna med det språkutvecklande arbetet? För att besvara frågeställningen har en kvalitativ forskningsmetod använts i form av semistrukturerade intervjuer med åtta samhällskunskapslärare som arbetar i olika mångkulturella skolor i Sverige. Det insamlade materialet kodades och sorterades i teman efter transkribering utifrån studiens syfte och frågeställning. Studien utgår från ett sociokulturellt perspektiv med fokus på stöttning, interaktion och användning av språkliga redskap för att förstå hur lärandet sker i samspel med andra. Studiens resultat visar att de åtta lärarna använder olika språkutvecklande strategier i undervisningen såsom begreppsförståelse, begreppslistor, gemensam läsning, digitala verktyg, bildstöd och modelltexter. Lärarna betonar även betydelsen av att anpassa undervisningen så att den gynnar alla elever och inte enbart flerspråkiga. Framträdande möjligheter med arbetet är bland annat inkluderande klassrumsmiljö och ett ökat ordförråd. Utmaningarna pekar dock på varierande språkliga nivåer hos elever, tidsbrist, brist på resurser och ett behov av fortbildning kring språkutvecklande arbetssätt.The study investigates how social studies teachers work on language development in a multilingual classroom in grades 7–9. The purpose of the study is to contribute knowledge about how social studies teachers work to promote language development in multilingual students in grades 7–9, and what opportunities and challenges the teachers see with this work. The study's questions is: What strategies do social studies teachers use to promote language development in multilingual students? What opportunities and challenges do teachers see with language development work? To answer the question, a qualitative research method has been used in the form of semi-structured interviews with eight social studies teachers who work in different multicultural schools in Sweden. The collected material was coded and sorted into themes after transcription based on the purpose and question of the study. The study is based on a sociocultural perspective with a focus on support, interaction and the use of linguistic tools in order to understand how learning occurs in interaction with others. The results of the study show that the eight teachers use different language development strategies in their teaching, such as conceptual understanding, concept lists, shared reading, digital tools, visual aids and model texts. The teachers also emphasize the importance of adapting teaching so that it benefits all students and not just multilingual ones. Prominent opportunities with the work include an inclusive classroom environment and an increased vocabulary. However, the challenges point to varying language levels among students, lack of time, lack of resources and a need for further training in language development methods

    We are Nature, Nature is Us : A Quantitative Study of Swedish Outdoor Enthusiasts' Religious Relationship with Nature

    This study explores the religious relationship to nature among Swedish outdoor enthusiasts, with a particular focus on how this connection is expressed through experiences, perceptions, and practices related to time spent in nature. Drawing on Bron Taylor’s theory of dark green religion, the study analyses the extent to which these nature-related worldviews can be understood as religious. The research is based on a quantitative survey with qualitative elements, including 75 participants. The collected data shows that the majority perceive nature as inherently meaningful and valuable, often expressing feelings of reverence, connectedness, and existential reflection. The results reveal clear tendencies of dark green religiosity. A naturalistic view of nature is especially common, but various forms of spiritual tendencies also emerge. The study concludes that, for many outdoor enthusiasts, nature functions as a site for meaning-making, presence, and reverence—an expression of religiosity in a broad and functional sense. Denna studie undersöker svenska friluftsmänniskors religiösa förhållande till naturen, med särskilt fokus på hur dessa relationer tar sig uttryck i upplevelser, förställningar och praktiker kopplade till naturvistelser. Utifrån Bron Taylors teori om mörkgrön religion analyseras i vilken mån friluftsmänniskors natursyn kan förstås som religiös. Studien bygger på en kvantitativ enkätstudie med kvalitativa inslag med 75 deltagare. Insamlade data visar att majoriteten uppfattar naturen som meningsbärande och värdefull i sig själv, ofta med uttryck för vördnad, samhörighet och existentiella reflektioner. Resultatet visar tydliga tendenser av mörkgrön religion. Särskilt förekommande är en naturalistisk syn på naturen, men även olika former av spirituella tendenser framträder. Studiens slutsats är att naturen för många friluftsmänniskor fungerar som en plats för meningsskapande, närvaro och vördnad, uttryck för religiositet i en bred och funktionell bemärkelse.

    What Does a Scent Look Like? : Visualising Fragrances On E-commerce Websites

    Purchasing perfumes online imposes multiple challenges, the main one being the inability to sample the scent. However, current ways of communicating perfumes online are not developed enough to provide proper support. This thesis, therefore, addresses this gap and aims to contribute to a better online perfume buying experience, especially for less experienced e-shoppers. The research included literature review, focus group, and usability testing in which a new alternative platform design was compared against a standard e-commerce layout. The findings suggest that e-shoppers prefer context and easily interpretable, often simplified cues, and that perfumes can be visualised well enough to give users a mental image of the scent. The challenge, however, lies in communicating the correct impression and evoking realistic expectations

    Risk Management and Accounting of Short Positions : Analysis of Challenges and Transparency in financial reporting

    Background: Short selling contributes to market efficiency but also raises transparency and risk management challenges, particularly during periods of financial instability. Despite formal transparency requirements under IFRS, US GAAP, and UK GAAP, reporting practices vary considerably due to differences in standard structure and contextual discretion, making it difficult to ensure comparability and investor confidence.  Purpose: This study aims to examine how financial firms demonstrate transparency regarding short-selling risks under IFRS, US GAAP, and UK GAAP, and how differences in these standards affect transparency. It also explores how firm characteristics and external pressures shape transparency practices.  Method: Employing a mixed method approach, the study combines systematic content analysis of financial reports from firms operating under the three standards with semi-structured interviews with industry professionals. Institutional and stakeholder theories are applied to interpret how contextual and strategic factors shape transparency choices beyond technical compliance.  Conclusion: The study finds that short-selling risk transparency varies notably across accounting standards, influenced not only by their structure but also by institutional and stakeholder pressures. While US GAAP promotes standardization, IFRS and UK GAAP allow more flexibility. Overall, transparency is shaped by a complex mix of regulation, market demands, and professional judgment.

    Livslektioner : En reflektiv utforskning av bildning i engelskämnet

    This essay explores Bildung in the English subject in Swedish Upper Secondary School. The term “Bildung” is not entirely easy to define concretely, and it is used in the official national curriculum for Swedish upper secondary school, without an official definition. This essay engages Bildung as a philosophical tradition in dialogue with teacher interviews through hermeneutic methods with a reflective approach. The purpose is to illustrate and exemplify what Bildung can be and how it comes to concrete expression within the English subject.  A theoretical framework in which Bildung is considered a narrative form of knowledge, mediates the interaction between my prior understanding of Bildung as a philosophical tradition with the teacher interviews, by emphasising the relationship between formative experiences and didactic practices of practicing English teachers. The discussion presents how formative experiences, reflections and didactic practices may constitute manifestations and affordances of Bildung. The conclusions indicate that teachers’ Bildung related work is complex and multifaceted and that teachers use and expand their own Bildung in their professional practice through reflections on experiences. In sum, Bildung is identified in the English subject with individual reflections, on the part of both teachers and pupils, on social, emotional, vocational and existential aspects of learning the English language.Denna uppsats utforskar bildning i engelskämnet inom svensk gymnasieskola. Begreppet "bildning" är inte helt enkelt att definiera konkret, och används i läroplanen för gymnasieskolan utan någon officiell definition. Denna uppsats sätter bildning som filosofisk tradition i dialog med lärarintervjuer genom hermeneutiska metoder med reflektiv ansats. Syftet är att illustrera och exemplifiera vad bildning kan vara hur det tar sig konkreta uttryck i engelskämnet. Ett teoretiskt ramverk som betraktar bildning som en narrativ kunskapsform präglar interaktionen mellan förförståelse av bildning som filosofisk tradition med lärarintervjuerna, genom att betona förhållandet mellan formativa upplevelser och didaktiska praktiker hos praktiserande engelsklärare. Uppsatsens diskussion presenterar hur formativa upplevelser, reflektioner och didaktiska praktiker kan ses som uttryck och förmedlanden av bildning. Uppsatsens slutsatser indikerar att lärares bildningsrelaterade arbete är komplext och mångfacetterat samt att lärarna nyttjar och vidgar sin bildning i sin professionella praktik genom att reflektera på erfarenheter. Sammanfattningsvis identifieras bildning inom engelskämnet med individuella reflektioner av såväl lärare som elever på de känslomässiga, yrkesmässiga och existentiella aspekterna av att lära sig det engelska språket.

    Diagnosis as a Prerequisite for Support - When Children's Difficulties are Individualized in Response to Systemic Demands : A qualitative interview study on the inclusion of trauma and attachment in ADHD assessments from the perspective of professionals

    The interest of the study stemmed from a national increase in ADHD diagnosis, where an overlap in symptoms between ADHD, trauma, and disorganized attachment may create difficulties in differential diagnostics. In this respect, the study aimed to research how, and to what extent, trauma and attachment styles are incorporated in ADHD screenings for children under the age of 18. Empirical data were collected through eight semi-structured interviews with professionals working within three separate Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Clinics (BUP). Using thematic analysis within an abductive approach, the study has moved iteratively between professionals’ experiences and interpretations with existing research and Foucault’s discourse theory, as applied with Bacchi and Goodwin’s “What’s the Problem Represented to be?” (WPR) approach. The results indicated that organizational conditions such as time pressure, unequal task distribution, and insufficient inter-agency collaboration affect the extent to which trauma- and attachment-related factors are included in the screening and diagnostic process. To this effect, all interviewees highlighted the importance of a comprehensive understanding of the child – though this is often hindered by organizational conditions and handled differently across clinics. Drawing on the WPR approach, the findings demonstrated how biomedical discourse tends to dominate over more relational or contextual understandings, which risks individualizing children’s difficulties. The study thus critically examines and brings attention to how discourses and structural conditions influence and affect the ability to recognize and provide adequate resources in line with The Best Interests of the Child.Studiens intresseområde grundades i en nationell ökning av ADHD diagnoser. Utifrån symtomöverlapp som existerar mellan ADHD, trauma och desorganiserad anknytning syftade studien till att undersöka hur, och i vilken utsträckning, barns trauma och anknytning beaktas i utredning och diagnostisering av ADHD hos barn under 18 år. Genom semistrukturerade intervjuer med fyra kuratorer och fyra psykologer verksamma inom tre BUP-mottagningar har det empiriska materialet analyserats i en tematisk analys. Inom ramen för en abduktiv ansats rör sig studien iterativt mellan intervjupersonernas erfarenheter och tolkningar, tidigare forskning och Foucaults diskursteori. Med hjälp av Bacchi och Goodwins diskursteoretiska ”What’s the Problem Represented to be?”-modell visades olika problemrepresentationer som inom empirin, samt hur dessa har skapats, upprätthålls och vilka konsekvenser de fått. Flera intervjupersoner beskrev svårigheter i att särskilja ADHD från trauma, och betonade därför att differentialdiagnostiska överväganden kräver noggranna och helhetsbaserade bedömningar. Resultatet visade att trauma och anknytningsrelaterade faktorer beaktas i varierande grad mellan mottagningar och intervjupersoner. Organisatoriska villkor som tidspress, arbetsfördelning och bristande samverkan utgjorde ofta hinder för att se barnet ur ett helhetsperspektiv, där en ofta dominerande biomedicinsk diskurs riskerar att barns svårigheter individualiseras. Studien undersöker därmed kritiskt hur diskurser samt strukturella och organisatoriska villkor inverkar på möjligheten att identifiera och tillhandahålla adekvata resurser i enlighet med principen om barnets bästa.
