When Words Lose Their Edge : Analysing Keyword Loss of Specificity in Swedish and UK Information Security Policies

    No full text
This section presents the abstract of the thesis. Background: Information Security Policies (ISPs) guide employee behaviour in protecting organisational information assets. Clear communication through directive keywords (such as "must", "shall", "should") is fundamental for policy effectiveness. Previous research by Rostami and Karlsson (2024) found that Swedish public agencies frequently use keywords for purposes other than providing clear actionable advice, potentially reducing policy clarity. Purpose: This study examines how directive keywords convey actionable advice in operational ISPs from Swedish and UK higher education institutions. The research investigates whether keyword usage patterns differ between linguistic contexts and measures the extent of keyword loss of specificity in both countries. Method: Using qualitative content analysis, we analysed 30 operational ISPs (15 Swedish, 15 UK) from higher education institutions. We developed a custom tool, the ISP Keyword Analyzer, to extract and classify 2,314 sentences containing predefined keywords. Each sentence was classified as either Actionable Advice (AA) or Other Information (OI). We calculated keyword loss of specificity metrics to compare effectiveness across languages. Result: Swedish ISPs demonstrated lower keyword loss of specificity (33.7%) compared to UK policies (49.7%), indicating more consistent use of keywords for actionable advice. Swedish policies relied heavily on two keywords ("ska" at 45.5% and "inte" at 35.1%), while UK policies showed more balanced distribution across four main keywords ("must" 28.6%, "should" 25.3%, "not" 21.9%, "shall" 19.3%). Individual keyword analysis revealed that equivalent terms function differently across languages, with some showing minimal difference (e.g., "måste"/"must" at 0.8 percentage points) while others varied substantially (e.g., "behöver"/"need" at 53.1 percentage points)

A PE teacher’s tale : journeying from teacher education to teaching practice in physical education

    No full text
As part of a longitudinal research project on the transition from physical education teacher education (PETE) to school physical education (PE) in Sweden and exploring whether and how PETE matters, this article uses narrative inquiry to ‘represent’ a PE teacher’s professional journey from PETE to the induction phase of PE teaching. The study focuses on his use of, and reflections on, ‘assessment for learning’ (AfL) at different stages of his teaching experience. The purpose of the study is to contribute knowledge about how positive experiences of AfL during PETE can enable the use of AfL in school PE for a newly qualified teacher. This is done by analysing one male PETE student’s reflections on AfL in the context of a campus-based course on PE assessment, his use of and reflections on AfL during his practicum, and in school PE as a newly qualified teacher. The data generation consisted of recordings of a PETE seminar, a stimulated recall interview with the participant during his final school placement, and two interviews with him in his role as a newly qualified PE teacher at two different schools. Through the PE teacher’s tale, we show how the campus-based course on PE assessment in PETE and the student teacher’s positive experience of using AfL during his practicum seem to have inspired him in his later positions. The results are discussed in relation to the perspective of occupational socialisation theory. This narrative inquiry suggests that PETE can make a difference for student teachers who are prepared to face the challenges of the induction phase of PE teaching and are able to navigate between the barriers that get in their way. We conclude the paper with some considerations regarding the study’s potential strength (trustworthiness), sharing (transferability) and service (usefulness).Transitions from Physical Education Teacher Education to School P

Global citizenship as taken-for-grantedness : reflecting on Swedish students’ trip to Tanzania

    No full text
Swedish students regularly take part in school partnership trips to Tanzania. Yet, little research looks at the extent to which these trips support global learning. This paper is interested in the discourses that enable and constrain ethical relationality in these educative encounters. It considers existing research on global citizenship education and school partnerships in relation to decolonial engagements then analyses interview data with four students who participated in an entrepreneurship themed trip to identify discourses available to them. Students articulated an overarching discourse of taken-for-grantedness. Several sub-discourses could enable but tend to constrain an ethical relationality in these educative encounters

Young Children’s Lives at Domestic Violence Shelters : Mothers’ Perspectives on Their Children’s Experiences

    No full text
Purpose: The aim of this study is to analyze mothers’ narratives about their children’s life situation while living at domestic violence shelters in Sweden. More precisely, the analysis focuses on determining what aspects are highlighted as being most important for the children’s living situation during their stay. Method: This study is based on interviews with mothers who have experience of living at a domestic violence shelter together with their young child/ren. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the narratives. Results: The analysis resulted in seven themes important for the children’s lives during their shelter stay. These are: safety, isolation, a child-friendly environment, shared living space, social relations at the shelter, children’s health during their stay, and support at the shelter. Conclusion: In the narratives, safety was highlighted as the most important issue, and as something that also affects other aspects of the children’s lives during their time at the shelter. A child-friendly environment, access to activities and support, and positive social relations at the shelter are also important. In addition, positive experiences regarding these aspects can be understood to counteract the feeling of isolation and improve children’s ability to process their experiences.

    No full text
This study aims to investigate male engineers´ perceptions, reflections and actions on gender equality work. Previous research shows a gender inequality within engineering education and male dominated professions. Some men believe that gender equality is important, some show resistance and invisibility of this problem. Women are often more aware of these issues. There is a knowledge gap regarding male engineers´ reflections, perceptions and actions to gender equality work. We intend to fill this knowledge gap. This is done by using a qualitative approach by conducting reflexive interviews. This study shows that there is an inequality within engineering professions. The study also shows that men have an awareness of gender equality work and that it is an important topic to talk about. However, there were stereotypical perceptions of women which maintained the traditional gender order. This perception prevented men from acting for equality in certain situations. It also emerged that companies play an important role in getting men involved in gender equality work.

    No full text

    No full text

Legitimating ball games : The recontextualisation of ball games knowledge in Swedish physical education and physical education teacher education

    No full text
This thesis is about ball games as content within physical education teacher education (PETE) and physical education (PE) in a Swedish context. The focus of the study is on how knowledge related to ball games becomes legitimate in PETE, and how this knowledge is transformed and used in pedagogic practice in PE. This thesis consists of four articles investigating these questions in different educational contexts. In Article I, I examine how PE teacher educators define legitimate ball games knowledge in PETE through the lens of Shulman’s theory on teachers’ knowledge. The findings suggest that PE teacher educators define legitimate knowledge as a combination of content knowledge related to participation in sports and pedagogical content knowledge related to learning for all pupils. In Article II-IV the focus is on how knowledge is recontextualised in transitions from PETE to PE and the analysis is done through Bernstein’s theoretical framework. The findings in Article II show that the pre-service teachers’ pedagogic discourse of ball games involved substantial changes and transformations in the transition from university to school placement. These changes can be explained by recontextualising rules that either constrain or enable the use of knowledge. The findings in Article III indicate that beginning teachers had different aims in their teaching, some aimed to develop pupil’s understanding of games while others used ball games as a means to develop movement or cooperative capabilities. The teachers employed different strategies to handle challenges of the cultural influence from competitive sport. The findings of Article IV suggest that beginning teachers consider knowledge from PETE useful and relevant and were able to reproduce this knowledge in PE practice. They were also missing important knowledge, and their teaching was affected by contextual factors. The thesis contributes to existing scholarship with knowledge about the recontextualisation process in which the pedagogic discourse of ball games is constructed within PETE and transformed and reproduced into PE practice

Reshaping Social Work Education : A Combined Scoping Review of Critical Perspectives in Nordic Curricula with Swedish Student’s Reflections and Global Readiness

    No full text
Neoliberal globalization has transformed societies, deepening systemic inequalities, exacerbating environmental crises, and sidelining vulnerable populations. Social work, as a human rights profession, is tasked with addressing these challenges. However, due to these neoliberal influences, Nordic countries, and specifically Sweden have faced a changing welfare state and a shift in social work education increasingly prioritizing technical skills and market-driven efficiency over critical engagement with global and structural power dynamics. An ongoing governmental review of Swedish social work education further reinforce this trend, emphasizing employability and measurable outcomes, while neglecting critical and transformative professional training addressing systemic injustices thorough critical perspectives. This study critically examines the extent to which global, structural, and critical perspectives on power dynamics are integrated into Swedish social work education. Employing a multimodal qualitative approach, it combines a scoping review mapping the coverage of these issues in Nordic social work curricula with focus group interviews to capture Swedish social work students' perceptions of global, structural and critical perspectives in their own education and their preparedness for future professional practice. The findings reveal significant gaps in curriculum content, including limited critical engagement with systemic inequalities and a disconnect between theoretical learning and practical application. Students’ express concerns about their readiness to tackle complex societal challenges such as globalization, and sustainability in their future roles. These insights underscore the need for a curriculum that consistently foster both analytical and practical skills, equipping students to tackle structural challenges effectively and work with multifaceted social issues. In response, this study advocates for transformative curriculum reforms that integrate critical, global, and structural perspectives as central pillars of social work education. By integrating these frameworks with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, educators can better prepare students to address systemic injustices, bridge theory and practice, and advance sustainability and social justice. It is argued that these findings offer actionable insights for policymakers and educators, aiming to align Swedish social work education with the profession's ethical commitment to equity, sustainability, and social justice in an increasingly globalized world

Implementation of OEE: : Challenges and conditions in manufacturing industry

    No full text
Bucher Emhart Glass (BEG) in Örebro is planning to implement the performance indicator Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) to improve data collection in its CNC-based production. The company currently uses Overall Labor Effectiveness (OLE) to measure workforce efficiency, but this metric provides limited insight into machine utilization and results in difficult-to-interpretate data. To improve the measurability of efficiency, refine cost analyses, and facilitate maintenance operations, the management intends to introduce OEE as a complement to OLE. The aim of this thesis is to support the implementation process and serve as a decision-making basis for the upcoming introduction of OEE in the existing CNC machining environment. The study investigates potential challenges, required conditions for success, and how OEE may influence production efficiency, operational control, and sustainability. The methodology combines a literature review with a qualitative case study based on observations, interviews, and document analysis. The results are analyzed and compared using the Pattern-Matching method. The literature review identifies established success factors and challenges related to OEE implementation in the manufacturing industry. The case study maps the current state at BEG and identifies local conditions, which are then compared to theoretical findings. The analysis shows that a successful implementation is influenced by technical, organizational, cultural, and leadership-related factors. For example, a reliable and automated data collection system, standardized procedures and definitions, continuous improvement processes, employee engagement, and management support are essential. The findings indicate that OEE can expose hidden losses and contribute to increased actual production efficiency. Ongoing follow-up also strengthens data-driven production management and decision-making. In the long term, more efficient resource use and waste reduction can contribute to improved sustainability. In summary, the study provides decision-makers with practical insights on how OEE can be effectively implemented in a CNC environment and emphasizes the importance of combining technical solutions with active improvement efforts for long-term success
