Self-Efficacy as a Moderator of the Effectiveness of a Sleep Hygiene Intervention

    No full text
Interventions that address sleep hygiene knowledge and behaviors have yielded inconclusive results. The aim of the current study was to assess the effectiveness of an online sleep hygiene intervention on modifying sleep hygiene behavior and sleep quality, hypothesizing that the use of a sleep hygiene intervention will be more effective at increasing sleep hygiene behaviors and sleep quality compared to the control. In addition, we hypothesized that self-efficacy may moderate this effect, with the intervention being more effective among those with high levels of self-efficacy compared to those with low levels. Participants included 66 college students (78.3% female). Participants were randomly assigned to either a sleep hygiene intervention or a service skills intervention and completed measures of sleep hygiene self-efficacy and sleep hygiene intentions immediately before and after their assigned interventions. Participants also completed measures of sleep hygiene knowledge, sleep hygiene, behaviors, and general self-efficacy immediately before their assigned intervention. One week after completing the intervention, participants completed all measures again. A 2 X 2 mixed repeated measures ANOVA was run and indicated a significant effect for the condition and time interaction on sleep hygiene, with the sleep hygiene intervention causing greater improvements in sleep hygiene compared to the control group. Self-efficacy significantly moderated the effectiveness of the intervention at altering sleep hygiene behaviors No significant results were found for sleep quality, self-efficacy for sleep hygiene, general self-efficacy. The authors discuss the implications of healthy sleep hygiene on college students physical and mental well-being

Sexual Education Topics Recalled by Students from Public and Private Schools

    No full text
This research aimed to determine which comprehensive sex education principles (as recommended by the Sexual Education Information Council of the United States (SEICUS)) were recalled among people who attended private and public schools. We surveyed 80 participants at a private, religiously affiliated university to see what they recalled from their sexual education in public vs. private schools. Only two topics (sexual anatomy and puberty) were recalled by more than 70% of the participants. All other SEICUS standards were recalled by fewer than 30% of the participants, with the fewest recalling sexual fantasies, sexual dysfunction, sex and the law, sex and society, and sex across the lifespan. While students who attended public schools were more likely to recall being taught about puberty and sexual assault/abuse, students who attended private schools were more likely to recall being taught about sex as it relates to religion. This is important because the data highlights a small number of topics that are being effectively taught in schools, along with a large number of comprehensive sex education standards that are being neglected in both public and private schools

Swimming long, and swimming high: a case study on the physiology and training behind a record-setting swim across Lake Tahoe

    No full text
Purpose: We described the physiological adaptations evoked during a 4 month training block in an elite female swimmer building towards two ultraendurance races: (1) a 16.1 km solo swim at sea level, and (2) a 34.3 km solo swim at 1900 m (~6200 ft) of elevation. Methods: The athlete underwent regular physiological assessments including measures on resting metabolic rate, peak oxygen uptake (V̇O2peak), exercise economy, and grip strength. In addition to training and pre-race measures, we captured the physiological responses immediately following completion of the 34.3 km distance. Results: The athlete completed 1.8 km of the 16.1 km ultraendurance swim in San Francisco before dropping out with symptoms of vertigo. One month later the participant completed the 34.3 km ultraendurance race across Lake Tahoe in a record-setting 10:34:48—the fastest time ever recorded for a woman and the second fastest time for an athlete of any sex. From the beginning of training to the weeks preceding the Lake Tahoe swim, RMR increased from 1382.9 kcal∙day-1 to 1720.6 kcal∙day-1. Exercise economy improved at low intensity workloads (28.0 ml∙kg-1∙min-1 to 25.8 ml∙kg-1∙min-1) but worsened at moderate intensity workloads (38.7 ml∙kg-1∙min-1to 40.8 ml∙kg-1∙min-1) with no change in V̇O2peak. Following the 10.5 h swim, body mass remained unchanged (59.9 kg), while grip strength declined (69.3 kg to 64.7 kg). Conclusions: This study provided new insights into the training regimen—and subsequent physiological adaptations—adopted by an elite female ultraendurance swimmer leading towards a record-breaking performance

Lost in Translation: The Case of Muslim Minorities in India and Myanmar

    No full text
This study examines the rise of religious nationalism in a two-case historical analysis of India and Myanmar. Sharing similar historical and cultural ties, each country’s regime and institutional framework influence the lives of the Muslim minority population. India’s backsliding democracy and Myanmar’s dubious democracy under military rule target religious diversity under the hands of Hindu and Buddhist nationalists. At the institutional level, religious nationalists’ broader efforts to persecute Muslims, burn identification cards to deem them as ‘illegal’, and discriminate against cultural and religious norms give rise to and motivate political actors to define national goals at the expense of religious minorities. India and Myanmar’s trends in pre- and post-colonial legacies, shifts in regime and institutional frameworks, religious nationalism, electoral incentives, and manipulation of civic engagement determine the current role of Muslim minorities. This research aims to show how religious freedom under different regimes can diverge under institutional frameworks, and in the case of India and Myanmar, cause political instability

Carbon Black Nanoparticle Disruption of the Endocytic Pathway

    No full text
Carbon black (CB) is an environmental toxin and component of particulate matter created primarily from the incomplete combustion of petroleum products. This project investigates the impact of carbon black (CB) nanoparticle endocytosis on cell survival, with a focus on lysosomal integrity and stress signaling. We hypothesize that CB accumulation within cells disrupts the vesicular system in a dose-dependent manner, triggering pro-apoptotic stress signaling. Using three cultured mammalian cell lines, we observe a time-dependent increase in CB accumulation through an incorporation assay, confirming endocytic entry. WST-8 metabolic assays reveal a significant decline in cell viability at increasing CB concentrations. Preliminary immunofluorescence imaging suggests early signs of apoptosis, including nuclear condensation, while immunoblot analysis indicates disruption of the endolysosomal system, marked by elevated levels of the autophagy marker LC3-BII. Future assessments of the endocytic pathway will include assessing membrane integrity in endocytic vesicles and upregulation of stress signaling. This research highlights the cellular mechanisms underlying CB toxicity, with implications for understanding nanoparticle-induced environmental health risks
