No full textAls vom 22. bis 24. Februar 2024 die wissenschaftliche Wohnungslosigkeitsforschungskonferenz „Fragile Behausungen. Prekäres Wohnen und Wohnungslosigkeit in Zeiten multipler Krisen“ (#wolokon24) an der TH Nürnberg mit 160 Teilnehmer*innen stattfand, konnten nicht nur – wie in diesem Format sonst üblich – Forscher*innen unterschiedlicher Disziplinen untereinander in Austausch treten bzw. ihre Erkenntnisse mit Vertreter*innen aus Verwaltung, Politik und Praxis der Sozialen Arbeit diskutieren. Vielmehr war die Konferenz von Anfang an so angelegt, dass fünfzig (ehemals) wohnungslose Erfahrungsexpert*innen das Programm aktiv mitgestalteten und eigene Schwerpunkte setzten, die für sie bedeutsam waren

Agent-based modeling in cancer biomedicine: applications and tools for calibration and validation
No full textComputational models are not just appealing because they can simulate and predict the development of biological phenomena across multiple spatial and temporal scales, but also because they can integrate information from well-established in vitro and in vivo models and test new hypotheses in cancer biomedicine. Agent-based models and simulations are especially interesting candidates among computational modeling procedures in cancer research due to the capability to, for instance, recapitulate the dynamics of neoplasia and tumor – host interactions. Yet, the absence of methods to validate the consistency of the results across scales can hinder adoption by turning fine-tuned models into black boxes. This review compiles relevant literature that explores strategies to leverage high-fidelity simulations of multi-scale, or multi-level, cancer models with a focus on verification approached as simulation calibration

No full textDieses Buch zeigt die wichtige Rolle und Systemrelevanz der Distributions- und Handelslogistik vor dem Hintergrund des zunehmenden Einflusses der Convenience, der Digitalisierung, der Nachhaltigkeit und der Resilienz auf Prozesse, Strukturen und Systeme in den logistischen Netzwerken des Groß- und Einzelhandels. Durch die besondere Transportintensität, die Lagerkomplexität und erhebliche Flexibilitätsanforderungen in der Auftragsabwicklung entstehen hohe Logistikkosten. Gleichzeitig steigen die Serviceanforderungen der Kunden, u. a. durch das langfristig wachsende Onlinegeschäft im Groß- und Einzelhandel, weiter an. Daraus ergibt sich ein dauerhafter und immer herausfordernder Zielkonflikt aus notwendigen Kostenoptimierungen und kundenseitig erwarteten Serviceerweiterungen in der Distributionslogistik des Omnichannel-Handels.
Mit der dritten Auflage liegt eine völlig überarbeitete und erneut erweiterte Ausgabe des Buches vor, die 125 Abbildungen, 22 Tabellen, hunderte Praxis- und Fallbeispiele sowie umfassende themenspezifische Hintergrundinformationen enthält. Lernziele und Kontrollfragen zu jedem Kapitel ergänzen die Ausführungen und ermöglichen eine optimale Prüfungsvorbereitung.
Das Konzept der größtmöglichen Anwendungsorientierung trägt dazu bei, dem Anspruch an eine sich verändernde Lern- und Arbeitsdidaktik von Studierenden, Lehrenden, Forschern und Praktikern gerecht zu werden. Simulations of Anti-Resonant Waveguiding In Hollow Core Fibers
No full textStandard optical fibers guide light through total internal reflection in high refractive index material such as glass or polymers surrounded by low index material. Guiding light in optically dense matter however has some major disadvantages: Absorption, dispersion and Rayleigh-scattering place a lower bound to attenuation. In this work, a photonic crystal structure based on interference was studied, where light is guided in air surrounded by optical dense media. An attenuation of sub 0.1 db/km has been simulated numerically by optimizing the geometry of the fiber cross section. Ultra low-loss optical waveguides open up many possibilities for the design of laser resonators on the one hand and optical interfaces between atoms, quantum dots, NV-centers and light sources and detectors on the other hand. Those technologies require highly efficient light-coupling that can be directed at will
With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility - Integrating Data Ethics into Computing Education
No full textMost computing students enter the industry once they graduate. As
future software engineers, they will be in powerful positions, making decisions that impact their personal lives, others, and society. Thus, preparing graduates for their careers is crucial by addressing ethical considerations, decision problems, and other concepts related to morals, values, and legal aspects (e.g., data protection, privacy, security, etc.) as part of computing curricula. In this paper, we propose the integration of data ethics into computing programs and provide a framework for an ethics module, including relevant competency-based learning objectives. The proposed module is based on a curricular analysis of all 71 German data science degree programs focusing on ethics courses. The course contents and competency goals were analyzed and classified based on their cognitive complexity. As the results proved the lack of competency-
based learning outcomes, we designed observable competency goals, meaning knowledge, skills, and dispositions taken in the context of a task. In addition, we provide suggestions for contents, pedagogical instructions, and assessments in such a course. The proposed module serves as a first draft and resource to support other educators aiming to design such a course and who are willing to integrate it into computing curricula
Students' Perceptions of Behaviors Associated with Professional Dispositions in Computing Education
No full textDispositions, skills, and knowledge form the three components of
competency-based education. Moreover, dispositions are considered crucial for students to succeed in the workplace. Few studies investigate how dispositions manifest in the form of observable behaviors, which causes challenges for both students and educators. Computing students, for example, may not understand what is expected of them, and how to achieve dispositions. This paper presents the results of a qualitative, multi-institutional study on students’ understanding of the dispositions adaptable, persistent, self-directed, meticulous, and professional. Perceptions were gathered by asking for exemplary situations of students applying each of the five dispositions in the context of assignments within computing courses. Students who indicated they did not apply the disposition were asked to describe the hindering circumstances. The data was evaluated by using Mayring’s content analysis technique, resulting
in the development of deductive-inductive categories of observable
behaviors reflecting the student’s perspective. For meticulous and
professional, new categories representing observable behaviors were
developed. For adaptable, persistent, and self-directed, the authors
confirmed and extended prior work. Moreover, factors hindering
students in applying the investigated dispositions are identified. The resulting categories with observable student behaviors are an important step toward the operationalization of competency-based learning outcomes including dispositions. A common understanding of dispositions will also help with the design of new forms of instruction and measures to foster the application of dispositions in the context of computing education
Where's the Data? Finding and Reusing Datasets in Computing Education
No full textComputing education research (CER) is a rapidly advancing discipline, offering vast potential for data-driven, secondary research or replication studies. Although gathering and analyzing data for research seem straightforward, making research data publicly available to the community remains a challenge. Likewise, finding and reusing high-quality, prominent, and well-documented research data proves to be a daunting task. In this working group paper, the authors present their search for available datasets in the CER context (e.g., in databases and repositories). The available datasets are further analyzed using a newly developed metadata scheme and presented to the community as a resource. The second component of this work is a summary of the community’s perspective and concerns on publishing their research data, which has been gathered through a survey among 52 computing education researchers. Based on this status quo, this report presents recommendations for measures and future steps for the community to become more accessible and establish open data practices. We thus emphasize the potential of making research data available to enhance productivity, transparency, and reproducibility in the CER community
Zugang zu wohnungslosen Migrant*innen (ZuWoMi)
Get PDFMigrantinnen und Migranten sind überproportional häufig von Armut betroffen, doch Wohnungslosigkeit ist bei dieser Zielgruppe bisher wenig erforscht. Aufgrund intersektionaler Benachteiligungen kann sie als schwer erreichbar angesehen werden, was eine sozialwissenschaftliche Forschung in diesem Feld erschwert. Daher erprobt und bewertet das Projekt ZuWoMi niedrigschwellige Zugangsmöglichkeiten zur Zielgruppe. Es zeigte sich, dass ethnografische Ansätze und die Kontaktherstellung über Gate Keeper den Zugang zur Zielgruppe erleichtern können. Mittels Kurzbefragungen kann zudem verdeutlicht werden, dass der Sprache ein besonderer Stellenwert zukommt. Insgesamt ist zu konstatieren, dass aktiv teilnehmende Beobachtungen über einen längeren Zeitraum benötigt werden, um eine authentische Vertrauensbasis zu schaffen
