No full textWhat does the discourse on nomadism say about anthropological concepts of western societies? This edited volume relates historical instances of nomadism to the role of »the nomad« in political discourses and recent theoretical debates. The figure of the nomad was and still is constructed as an antagonist within a (neo-)liberal frame of narratives about sedentarism, productivity and improvement. Whereas the discourse about nomadism in the 18th and 19th century was entangled with colonial contexts and ideas about so called »primitive« societies, it became even more multifaceted in the 20th century, considering ideas about »nomadic thinking« of Deleuze or Guattari, and different forms of »modern nomadism« on the rise: from travelling day laborers to refugees of war, to scientists, to a global managerial class. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0/legalcod
Pathways into and out of Youth Cybercrime
No full textThis book provides a multi-disciplinary understanding of pathways into and out of youth cybercrime, and evidence-led ways to tackle the cybercrime epidemic, drawing on theoretical perspectives and insights from the largest European H2020 study of youth cybercrime undertaken to date. As societies are incorporating cyberspace into daily routines, people are increasingly at risk of exposure to cybercriminal activity. Many young people today are never truly offline; there is no dichotomy of being online and offline. This exposure – coupled with the criminogenic potential of digital technology – has led to an explosion of cybercrime perpetration and victimisation; impacting youth in particular. This book seeks to address critical gaps in knowledge, support evidence-based interventions, and inform future digital safety and prevention strategies by bringing together research, policy discussions, and the voices of experts, convicted cybercriminals, and young people. It draws upon key theoretical perspectives and new research conducted in the context of a H2020 project exploring the drivers of cybercrime. It is underpinned by the voices of the youth, experts, and convicted cybercriminals who took part, whose perspectives are key to shaping evidence-led recommendations for policy and practice. This book is intended for academics, frontline professionals, policymakers, child protection professionals, law enforcement, and technology developers committed to creating safer digital environments for children and young people. Rethinking Critical Race Theory
No full textThis open access book outlines a framework to explain how a world system of white supremacy is reproduced through education at national and local levels. This contribution thus addresses the important need for critical race education scholarship that is not limited by nationally-framed or American-centric perspectives. Written in an accessible manner, the framework recognises that racism takes hold in diverse ways in local and national educational contexts, but is ultimately rooted in global white supremacy. Forging links between Critical Race Theory and decolonial thought, this framework explains how national racialized social systems are reproduced through global structures, knowledge, and feelings; and articulates how anti-racism in education relies on forging transnational solidarities. To illustrate the relevance and significance of this framework, the book engages with how educational systems throughout the world are implicated in sustaining global anti-Muslim racism in a time of Palestinian genocide. Addressing a timely topic and gap in the literature, this book will provide an invaluable resource to postgraduate students and academics developing critical scholarship that explains and resists the global nature of race and racism in education
