Norges musikkhøgskole. Masteroppgave. The network was founded in January 1994 when it launched its first Nordic conference at Schaeffergaarden in Copenhagen. Only a handful doctoral students were doing their research in music education in the Nordic countries at that time, and they were nearly all present at the conference. The doctoral students came from Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Norway and were all given a lot of space and time to present and discuss their work with the senior researchers in the field. The idea of establishing a Yearbook to publish Nordic music education research was presented at the Network’s second conference in Piteå in 1995, and the present Nordic Research in Music Education Yearbook Vol. 15, shows the sustainability of this idea. Since 2007 the Yearbook has been ranked as one of the journals at the highest scientific levels in Norway. The present volume includes fifteen articles. The first three articles discuss various aspects of the education of and the professional practices of music teachers. The following ten articles present results from research on a variety of formal and informal music education contexts. The last two articles are philosophically oriented

Vocal and tangible interaction in RHYME

In this article we explore the voice in tangible interaction design and its possibility to strengthen health by reducing isolation and passivity. Our approach is to use knowledge about the voice from music therapy and multi-sensory stimulation for designing computer-based tangible interaction. We argue that the use of resource-oriented methods by these two fields strengthens all participants involved and is particularly interesting for interaction design and computer-based interactive sound design when working with a diverse mix of people with or without disabilities. In two design cases we explore vocal, bodily and tactile interaction as input, and music, tactile sensations and lighting as output. The two cases are first and second generation of interactive, tangible installations in the on-going research project RHYME (Rhyme, 2010). To analyse and integrate the findings in the design we have followed user-oriented research-by-design methods conducted as cycles of actions with design, interviews and video observations of families with children who have severe disabilities

Norges musikkhøgskole. Masteroppgave. MusikkpedagogikkAbstract. - In the April 2013 a questionnaire was conducted among school band musicians in Telemark county (Norway). The main goal of the stydy was to evaluate how the perceived quality in school band drive musicians’ satisfaction with playing in the band, as well as their intentions to continue playing. The research involved a survey of 153 school band members in 8 school bands in Telemark county. The answer percentage of 83,7% indicates high reliability. Data analysis was done in SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) where totally 9 hypotheses were tested. 5 of those were significant. More specifically, a series of multiple regressions analysis were performed to predict whether musicians’ satisfaction with school band is based on their perceived quality in the band. Findings show that the perceived attributes of band quality were significantly related to members’ satisfaction with the band and their intentions to continue playing in school band. Firstly and foremost, the attribute school band memebers care most about is trust to band’s conductor. Next up is feedback they get from band’s conductor followed by band’s repertoir, which is significantly less predictive. The results of study show further that musicians’ satisfaction with school band has strong impact on their intentions to continue playing in school band.

An interactive technology for health: New possibilities for the field of music and health and for music therapy? A case study of two children with disabilities playing with ‘ORFI’

Digital music technology represents new challenges as well as new possibilities for the discipline and practice of music therapy. When such technology also incorporates interactivity, even further steps are taken in our efforts to improve health and wellbeing through musical means. This article explores how interaction with a new type of interactive musical tangibles can contribute to health and life quality for certain children with disabilities and developmental disorders. Its point of departure is the multidisciplinary research project RHYME, which explores a new treatment paradigm based on collaborative and interactive netbased musical ‘smart things’ with multimedia capabilities, positioned within a broader perspective upon the definition of health. The article is an extended in that we discuss theory, method, and results deriving from the first first test situations in RHYME. Following a short introduction of the RHYME project, part 1, which is theoretical, we will define our position with regards to various concepts of ‘music’ as well as ‘health and wellbeing’. We also briefly relate the RHYME technology to traditional as well as digital instruments within music therapy practices. In part 2, we introduce our methods of sampling and evaluation in this study, including our applications of action research and video analysis. Our process of data collection is reviewed in part 3, which includes two video analyses. In the first analysis, we focus on the relationship and interaction between the child and the co-creative tangibles, and in the second analysis on the interactions among the child, the co-creative tangibles (CCTs) and the close others who assist the children in their exploration of the CCTs. We also introduce the tool called Assessment of the Quality of Relationship (AQR), which we applied in the first analysis. In part 4, we consider the potential health benefits for children who interact with the CCTs. We also look at the ways in which music therapy might benefit from the use of this kind of music-interactive digital health technology. After presenting the background for RHYME, we will discuss aspects of data deriving from the experiments involving the CCTs called ORFI (see later). We will discuss the results deriving from our video analysis of two of the participating children, ‘Frode’ and ‘Ulla’. Our research question is threefold: How do the children relate to and interact with the co-creative tangibles; in what ways can their interaction become potentially health promoting; and how could music therapy profit from such interactive music therapy

    Tidligere FoU-virksomhet i Libanonprosjektet

    Get PDF

Connecting aural training and choral singing

    Get PDF
This presentation is based on a paper given at the GEFFF conference in October 2012, which in turn was based on the present author’s dissertation (Jaakkola 2012), where methods for connecting aural training and choral singing were explored. The study focused on choral aural training, which is understood as activities in choirs intended to improve the music literacy and aural training skills of choral singers. The research was a qualitative content analysis of sight-singing books (n = 41) written for amateur adult choral singers. These books were published in the Nordic countries, central Europe and North America between 1980 and 2007. The material included a number of sight-singing books with very different approaches, and the six books that stood out from the rest were discussed as case studies. These six featured a diversity of perspectives on aural training that led to the outlining of six approaches or ‘pathways’ to choral aural training. These pathways are briefly introduced in this presentation. Keywords: choral aural training, music literacy, aural training, sight-singing, choral educatio

    Erfaringer fra utdanningsprogrammet X-art

    Get PDF

Broadening the notion of aural skills through peer learning, instruments and student-framed assignments. A course with music performance students

    Get PDF
Aural-skills educators are increasingly subscribing to a broad notion of musical ’hearing’, which recognises both formal and informal contexts of musical learning. The role of musical instruments has also garnered increasing attention, as well as open-ended types of musical tasks, which invite the students to explore different solutions rather than to pursue single ‘correct’ answers. Such development is also connected to wider discussions on future musicianship, which suggest the inadequacy of too fixed curricular contents, and emphasise students’ readiness to accept challenges and develop into lifelong learners. The present article describes a pedagogical project that developed ways to integrate peer learning and the use of the students’ instruments or instrumental repertory into regular aural-skills learning in higher education and to involve the students in the design of their aural-skills tasks. The text maps some of the theoretical underpinnings of the project and describes a course for music performance students. Building on previous practitioner research projects, the course sought to develop practical solutions that support a broad view of musical awareness and musicianship. The text describes the teacher’s experiences of the course as well as some challenges when moving from a tradition with fixed aims and precisely framed exercises towards a pedagogy that gives more responsibility to the students in framing their aural-skills practice. Keywords: aural skills; ear training; peer learning; action research; curriculum developmen
