Vahad, tnen, tleti, arbaa! En studie om flerbruksarrangement i en flyktningleir.
Norges musikkhøgskole. Masteroppgave. MusikkpedagogikkSammendrag -
Summary -
This master thesis explores the teaching concept of flerbruksarrangement, also called multifunctions- score, and how this is used in music activities in a refugee camp. Multi-functionsscore has been used as a method of teaching and been further developed in connection with the music activity of the Norwegian Academy of Music in the Lebanon project, which takes place in the refugee camp Rashedieh in southern Lebanon where the concept is used as a central part of the teaching. The purpose of the master's thesis is to gain insight into, and develop knowledge about multi-functions-scores, the music activity in the refugee camp and how they influence each other.
The data in the thesis is gathered through four trips to Lebanon and the refugee camp Rashedieh during the period 2018-2019. The data were collected using an ethnographic approach where participant observation and semi-structured interviews were central.
The results and the discussion following create connections between community music, didactic theory and sociocultural learning theory. The findings from the work suggest that multi-functions-score as a teaching method succeed with its intention of inclusion because of its adaptability to each participant, whether through the adaptation of individual musical voices or music games. To achieve this, the findings show that there is a collaboration between different teachers in the music activity, which includes both the adult teachers and participants as temporary teachers. The results also show that there is required many skills of the person leading a multi-functions-score, as he or she may, among other things, need musical skills such as improvisation, composing, arranging and hearing games as well as instruction, planning and leadership skills
A new circle of modes. Revisiting the concept of diatonicism
Norges musikkhøgskole. Masteroppgave. Komposisjon. - Theoretical work delivered to the Norwegian Academy of Music as part of the final assessment of the Master of Music in Composition, under supervision of Professor Lasse ThoresenIntroduction - It is no accident that, amid the multitude of scales that can be extracted from the 12- tone equal temperament (2048, according to Keith;1 1490, according to Zeitler),2 one in particular has dictated the pitch material of such a large number of leading Western composers.3 The diatonic scale – because that is what this is all about – has been subject in the last 40 years of increasing scholar inquiry, in part thanks to the work of mathematicians such as John Clough and David Rothenberg. Inspired equally by Milton Babbitt and Allen Forte’s mathematically-based approach to serial music and by the music of the Common Practice Period, these and other mathematicians, computer scientists and music theorists paved the way for the assertion in music set theory of a new field of inquiry, that of diatonic set theory. --- Although this thesis is best encapsulated as an enquiry on the field of diatonic set theory, I still reserve its epilogue to address what a composer should expect when approaching the previously mentioned scales not so much as cold bricks belonging to the rigidly beautiful, lofty architecture of a modal system, but as raw material to be crafted into concrete pieces of music
Music and health promotion in Danish/ Nordic hospitals – who and how? An essay.
Abstract --
The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of health promotion through music activities and interventions in Danish/Nordic hospitals over the last twenty years, with particular emphasis on paediatrics. The article also discusses theoretical rationales and practical challenges related to these relatively new initiatives. The methodology is a mixture of heuristics and literature review. The author has been an active agent in this field – as a clinician, researcher, supervisor and teacher – and has taken part in the development of the theoretical concept of “health musicking”, which serves as a framework for many of the professionals (‘agents’) in the field. Findings include a presentation of the present evidence base for music interventions in Nordic hospitals and a systematic overview of agents in the field. There is a growing body of evidence from different types of research studies in the Nordic countries. However, the evidence base tailored to this specific field is still limited. Two different approaches or roads to the implementation of music therapy/music medicine in hospitals are identified and discussed, and practical implications are highlighted in a number of recommendations for professionals in the field.

Educating teachers - the X-art programme
One of the objectives of the Lebanon project1 is to develop arts provision for children and young people in Palestinian refugee camps in South Lebanon and to promote different forms of art and culture in Lebanese schools. During NMHs engagement in Lebanon we have found that there is a significant shortage of local, qualified personnel capable of teaching music and movement as a school subject or leisure activity. One key objective of the X-art programme has been to help raise skills levels amongst Palestinian and Lebanese teachers and social workers in respect of using music to educate children and adolescents. In addition to skills development in Lebanon, the education programme has also helped raise the professional skills of the Norwegian participants. Participation in X-art has also added valuable skills and experience in terms of how music and other forms of cultural expression can help reduce tensions and differences between different ethnic and religious groups such as the Lebanese and Palestinians.publishedVersio
Music Therapy on the Inside. A qualitative study of music therapy in a Norwegian high security prison
Norges musikkhøgskole. Masteroppgave.

The examination is based on observations made through a clinical training project in Ila Detention and Security Prison in 2019. Following the project, semi-structured interviews were conducted with the participants, which provides the data material for this thesis. Central themes that have showed up during the analysis of the participants experience with the music therapy are trust and confidence, acceptance and recognition, a sense of accomplishment, and the sense of a different daily life. The thesis argues that music therapy and the music therapist may have an impact on persons serving a prison sentence by facilitating changes within each individual in relation to their rehabilitation back into society, strengthening their hopes for the future, and by creating a more satisfactory daily life within the prison. The thesis also argues that the music therapist, by displaying a flexible approach may increase the clients’ codetermination both in and outside therapy sessions. Finally, the music therapy may provide the clients with a new perspective on themselves, allowing them to create a new identity or self-image.

This master thesis explores what important moments may entail for children with multiple disabilities in music therapy. The study has a qualitative design and data are collected using semi-structured interviews. As a part of the interview the six participants are three music therapists, as vel as three parents of children with severe disabilities. The data were analysed using Thematic Analysis which resulted in four categories: The Informants Moments, Characteristics of the Moments, Determinants which Promote Moments, and Effects of these Moments. The informants' moments describe what the informants emphasise in their understanding of important moments, and their moments revolved around love, belonging, relationship, recognition, mastery, joy, humour and laughter. The characteristics of the moments seemed to consist of small changes in the child, which had to be interpreted. Determinants which promote moments include listening to and following the child as well as the characteristics of music. Effects of these moments could be overwhelming emotions, significant experiences, increased expectations, interaction, and activation. The findings of the analysis were discussed considering theories of severe disabilities, inter-subjective perspectives on child development, significant moments, experiences of mastery, empowerment, happiness, and regulation. Based on the findings, I propose that important moments for children with multiple disabilities in music therapy entail: The experience of belonging, recognition, mastery and regulation in an improvisational and playful interaction, characterised by mutual dialogue, joy and laughter.

Musikalsk-digital danning. Om grunnskolens musikkundervisning og det digitale
Norges musikkhøgskole. Masteroppgave. MusikkpedagogikkSammendrag -
Abstract -
This master's thesis is a study of the phenomenon of digital Bildung as it appears in the Norwegian elementary school's music education. The thesis contains a review of previous research on digital tools in music education contexts and a theoretical framework on musical-digital Bildung that shows how the self is constructed in a culture where music as thinking and language is embedded in (digital) tools. The data used to describe digital technology in music education came from the survey DYNAMUS, group interviews with pupils in primary school and consultation statements given in connection with the development of the LK20 curriculum. The study shows that digital technology is a significant factor in music education, but to a small extent in the form of students' own use of digital tools. Exploring the digital in a multimodal music education focusing on critical reflection and interdisciplinarity is suggested as the way elementary school music education can contribute to digital Bildung
Summary -
This study focuses on the repertoire in Norwegian youth bands. A concert program is often put together by the musical directors, but what choices does the conductor make when finding repertoire? What is being looked after and what needs focus? Considering the variation in programming for a youth band, it seems like the conductors have varied opinions on what they believe to be a good youth band programme. The banding movement has a tradition of playing written music, and the conductors mostly kept to playing note based arrangements and original music from the music publishers. That spiked my curiosity as of what the music publishers has in mind when working with repertoire. By conducting interviews with six musical directors and Norsk Noteservice (a Norwegian music publisher), I try to see what a good youth band repertoire looks like and how this regulates the didactic work of repertoire.
The theoretical framework has consisted of the discourse theory from Laclau and Mouffe and in the form of the didactic relation model. The research methodology employs qualitative research and the discourse theory, and the data collecting consisted of semi structured interviews with six youth band conductors from the NMF regions Hordaland, Rogaland and Øst, with the addition of one music publisher.
The analysis revealed nine different discourses that tried to fill «a good youth band repertoire» with content. These discourses were 1) a broad music education, 2) Norwegian music, 3) target group, 4) the conductors competence, 5) good music crafting, 6) the conscious and independent music student, 7) music for the bands line up, 8) mastering and development and 9) the influence from the music students.
The results of this study indicates that a good school band repertoire is adjusted to the music students, considers the bands line up and reflects the competence of the music conductor within genres, styles, period music, methods and arranging/composing

An essay / Lars Ole Bonde.Music can be a significant health resource for children and their families in paediatric hospitals. Music therapy, music medicine and other music approaches are developing as part of children’s hospitals in the Nordic countries. Positions are established in some countries, and there is a growing interest in the field, both among politicians and health professionals. Still, the inclusion of music in paediatric hospitals is not a matter of course and the process of integrating music in Nordic hospitals could be said to be in an early phase. This anthology is a contribution to the growing evidence base for music approaches in paediatrics – with a unique focus on Nordic perspectives. It is of value to both practitioners and researchers interested in how music can be integrated in paediatric hospitals. At the same time, it is an invitation to hospital managers and health politicians to use the potentials of music therapy, music medicine and other music approaches and the competencies of professionals in these fields in a steady improvement of paediatric health care. The anthology covers a range of topics and perspectives. The articles, written by authors from across the Nordic countries, give insights into both selected practice areas within the paediatric hospital setting, research, theory, and core concepts. Although Nordic contexts are highlighted, the insights are also highly relevant to the international community. "This state-of-the-art music therapy anthology highlights the depth of theory and clinical practice taking place in pediatric hospitals. The insights so generously provided from a vast array of Nordic perspectives will certainly influence global music therapy research and practice.” Joanne V. Anglican choral evensong and the church of Norway. Aspects of integration and worship practice
Norges musikkhøgskole. Masteroppgave. KirkemusikkAbstract -
Anglican choral Evensong was introduced into the Church of Norway in the late 1960s by Norwegian church musicians. The inspiration for this came from high quality performances in English cathedrals and university colleges; these were the primary encountered sources. Evensong is also widely practised by parish church choirs across the UK and the Anglican Communion and has several recognised and established variations. Only a limited range was introduced to Norway so that current practice does not reflect the full breadth of Evensong from the Church of England.
The purpose of this study is four-fold. It is undertaken in order to understand the context into which Evensong is now placed, how the process of introducing Evensong has taken place, through an examination of the changes to the liturgy and performance practice which have occurred, and finally, it is an exploration of possibilities leading to further integration, so that it might be incorporated into the liturgical tradition of the Church of Norway.
The material in this investigation is gathered from secondary and empirical sources, including interviews and personal experiences, and information from relevant literature regarding liturgical history. A practical project was set up to explore ideas about choral repertoire and musical identity which could assist in the progression of integration.
A key finding of this research is that the parish church choir can be a valuable resource for the integration of this liturgy into the Norwegian context, linking together the cultural and spiritual life of the local Norwegian parish church
