Study on the measurement system to evaluate the electrode temperature in super-high-pressure mercury lamps
Get PDFpublisherThoriated tungsten (ThO2-W) is popularly used for the electrodes in super-high pressure mercury lamps (SHPs) used in semi-conductor processing. However, ThO2-W is not desirable for the global environment because of its radioactivity. Therefore it would be very valuable to make a new non-radioactive material to replace ThO2-W as the electrode, and many research efforts have been attempted for this purpose. However, the materials which were researched till now could not improve upon ThO2-W lifetime when they were used as the electrode in the lamps. To evaluate the lamp life the electrode temperature and its distribution are very important, because the lamp life has the close relations with them. However to measure the electrode temperature of a SHP is very difficult because of its plasma radiation. We have already held eleven sessions of open lectures entitled "Astronomical Observation Meeting - You are a Future Galileo, too! - " for elementary and junior high school students. widely used for power sources such as automobiles and ships. Their thermal efficiencies are around 30-40 %,
which indicates that the rest of the fuel energy supplied to the engine is consumed as heat losses to the exhaust
gas and others. Therefore, in addition to the improvement of thermal efficiency, the recovery of the energy
wasted as these losses is also important from the standpoint of effective energy utilization. In this study,
thermoelectric power generation tests were attempted at different engine conditions in order to clarify the
availability of thermal energy included in the diesel engine exhaust gas. As a result, it was experimentally
demonstrated that thermoelectric power generation is a practical method to convert the engine exhaust heat into
