    Get PDF
Only a few universities and colleges offer prosthetics and orthotics education worldwide. As of 2017, World Health Organization and the International Society of Prosthetics and Orthotics have established the standard of the prosthetics and orthotics profession. Investigating the status of the prosthetics and orthotics education in one of the high-income countries in the world will highlight an insight of the profession. This study reports on the current status of prosthetics and orthotics education on the undergraduate level in Japan. A survey was conducted among the universities and colleges offering prosthetics and orthotics programs in Japan. A total of 136 students with mean age of 21 years from 6 schools responded to the survey. Of the total number of the respondents 50 (37%) were freshmen, 41 (30%) sophomores, 23 (17%) juniors and 22 (16%) seniors. The results highlighted some difficulties mainly related to biomechanics course, upper and lower limbs prosthetic manufacturing. Understanding an update of the prosthetics and orthotics education programs in the developed countries enables some clues for strategic planning to develop teaching methods that improve the professional skills of the students

Media coverage and stress in evacuees from Fukushima of the Great East Japan Earthquake

    No full text
The Great East Japan Earthquake (GEJE), on March 11, 2011, forced many residents of Fukushima to evacuate to other prefectures. It is known as a triple disaster of earthquake, tsunami and nuclear accidents. People were exposed to repeated terrifying images of the disaster, such as footage of the tsunami and explosions at the nuclear plants, on television and every other type of media. The purpose of this study was to confirm evacuees’utilization rates of media coverage and verify the influences of that coverage on the change of their subjective stress for three years (stress3Y) from just after GEJE. Analyses were performed using anonymous self-administered questionnaires with 859 evacuees. First, comparisons among the types of media coverage consumed and age groups by gender were conducted to verify any unevenness or linear trends. Multiple regression analysis was then performed with the objective variable of stress3Y, and 24 explanatory variables : gender, age group, family structures, types of news source, and visual analogue scale (VAS) for measuring influences of media coverage. Few differences were found between the genders. The news source with the highest utilization was television, and over 70% of evacuees consumed multiple news sources. Regarding age differences, an upward age trend in newspaper utilization rate was observed, and downward trends were observed regarding mobile phone and internet usage. Stress3Ys were significantly influenced both positively (merits) and negatively (demerits) by television coverage. Information obtained via television particularly contributed to the reduction of stress, but oft-repeated scenes of disaster, such as coverage of the tsunami on television, seemed to cause evacuees and even non-evacuees to experience trauma. These results indicate that, in order to prevent disaster trauma, excessive repeated coverage of actual disaster scenes on television should be reconsidered in order to avoid exacerbating disaster-related stress and post-traumatic stress. Media organizations should restrict the airing of vivid disaster scenes in the same way that they do for graphic murder and war scenes

Special particularities of kamishibai texts : hints for making the reading of kamishibai to children more interesting

Kamishibai (stories read aloud, with pictures changed at regular intervals in a frame) are educational materials used in Japan as often as picture books, in teaching young children. The texts of these kamishibai have been reported to often differ in particular ways from picture books and other story written for children: visual details and the characters’mental and emotional states are often summarily described, with less narration, more spoken dialogue, and more onomatopoeia to facilitate omprehension of the action. However, our study discovered that in the kamishibai version of the book by Miyoko Matsutani, Mama ni Nanka Wakannai (Mommy Doesn’t Understand Me), called Chuusha ni Itta Momo-Chan (Little Momo Gets an Injection), at the story’s climax, the main character’s thoughts and feelings are actually described at greater length in the kamishibai version than in the original. It is therefore not always the case that kamishibai only give summary versions of their original stories. Hence the importance of being aware of these facts when reading kamishibai to children: when certain aspects of a character’s mental state are described in fuller detail, these passages should be read in a way conveying their importance, and rendering the reading of the kamishibai more interesting to the listeners.

In this report, an online education seminar system has been studied, which is based on the learning management system (Moodle) and added on the video conferencing system (Openmeetings). The remote seminar program was offered and twenty-three students participated from three laboratories of Niigata Institute of Technology. The results of questionnaire survey for the program show some educational effects on the activeness of the students. In the seminar, some network faults have been observed. Then, the load on the wireless network has been measured, and a link between terminal computer and access point of the wireless network is suggested as a probable cause of the fault

The philosophy of sound development of children created at the time of enactment of the Child Welfare Law is used as materializing the philosophy of the Child Welfare Act for all children. However, while health regulation policies of children in Japan are stipulated in the Child Welfare Law, there is a possibility that they have not been systematically developed. Therefore, in this paper, we summarize the classification of related sound development policies and the basic ideas and policies of the ministries responsible for the main sound development policy, in order to arrange the overall picture of the establishment and development of health promotion policy in Japan, It is aimed to classify health promotion policies of children in Japan. As a result, when classifying related health development policies, since the way to capture soundness of Japan is basically prescribed in the Child Welfare Law, it has not been systematically advanced, so the welfare labor administration It is revealed that its content and idea are different from the health development of children
