    The effect of cliffhanger technique on speaking anxiety and listening skills in primary school second grade Turkish course

Araştırmada tek grup ön test – son test deneysel desen kullanılmıştır. Veriler Sınıf Önünde Konuşma Kaygısı Ölçeği ve Dinleme Becerisi Değerlendirme Ölçeği kullanılarak toplanmıştır. Araştırmanın çalışma grubunu Niğde ili merkez ilçede bulunan bir ilkokulda 2. sınıfa devam eden 26 öğrenci oluşturmaktadır. Veri toplama araçlarıyla elde edilen veriler, SPSS istatistik paket programı kullanılarak bağımsız gruplar t-testi ve ilişkili gruplar t-testi ile analiz edilerek yorumlanmıştır. Araştırmanın sonuçlarına göre ilkokul öğrencileri Türkçe dersinde konuşma kaygısı yaşamaktadırlar. Türkçe okuma metinlerinin arkası yarın tekniği kullanılarak işlenmesiyle öğrencilerde konuşma kaygısının azaldığı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Konuşma kaygısına ilişkin kız ve erkek öğrenciler arasında anlamlı bir farklılığın olmadığı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Öğrencilerin Türkçe dersinde dinleme becerileri ise orta düzeydedir. Aynı zamanda Türkçe okuma metinlerinin arkası yarın tekniği kullanılarak işlenmesiyle öğrencilerin dinleme becerinin olumlu anlamda geliştiği sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Dinleme becerisine ilişkin kız ve erkek öğrenciler arasında anlamlı bir farklılığın olmadığı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır.The aim of this study is to examine the effect of processing the reading texts in primary school 2nd grade Turkish textbooks using the cliffhangers technique on students' speaking anxiety and listening skills in front of the class. A single group pretest - posttest experimental design was used in the research. Data were collected using the Classroom Speaking Anxiety Scale and the Listening Skills Assessment Scale. The study group of the research consists of 26 students attending the second grade in a primary school in the central district of Niğde. The data obtained through data collection tools were analyzed and interpreted with independent groups t-test and related groups t-test using the SPSS statistical package program. According to the results of the research, primary school students experience speaking anxiety in Turkish lessons. It was concluded that the speaking anxiety of the students decreased by processing the Turkish reading texts using the cliffhangers technique. It was concluded that there was no significant difference between male and female students regarding speech anxiety. Students' listening skills in Turkish lessons are at an intermediate level. At the same time, it was concluded that students' listening skills improved positively by processing Turkish reading texts using the cliffhangers technique. It was concluded that there is no significant difference between male and female students regarding listening skills

    An analysis on Gül İrepoğlu's novels from the perspective of new historicism

    Sosyal Bilimler Enstitüsü, Türk Dili ve Edebiyatı Ana Bilim Dalı"Gül İrepoğlu'nun Romanlarına Yeni Tarihselci Bir Yaklaşım" adlı tez çalışmasında yazarın romanları basım tarihine göre sırayla incelenmiştir. Bu değerlendirmelerdeki ölçütler ise Yeni Tarihselcilik kuramı doğrultusunda oluşturulmuştur. Bunun yanında eser incelemesinde klasik roman çözümlemesinden de yararlanılmıştır. Ayrıca eserler basım yıllarına göre kronolojik olarak incelenmiştir. Son dönem Türk edebiyatı yazarlarından biri olan Gül İrepoğlu, çıkış noktasını tarihten alarak yazdığı altı romanını, hayalî unsurlarla zenginleştirmiştir. Bu tez çalışmasında da romanlarda yer alan unsurlar Yeni Tarihselcilik kuramına göre incelenmiştir. Romanların çözümlenmesinde kurama göre belirlenen on bir başlık kullanılmıştır: Bu başlıklar "Romanın Tanıtımı", "Tarihin Kurgusallığı ve İdeoloji ile İktidarın Tarih Yazımına Etkisi", "Yeni Tarihselci Anlayış Bağlamında Zaman Kurgusu", "Yeni Tarihselci Anlayış Bağlamında Mekân Kurgusu", "Yeni Tarihselci Anlayış Bağlamında Anlatıcı/Yazarın Konumlandırılışı", "Metinlerarasılık", "Üstkurmaca", "Hiper-metinsel Tasarım", "Çoğulculuk", "Kolaj", "Yeni Tarihselci Anlayış Bağlamında Dil ve Üslup"tur. The criteria in these evaluations were created in line with the New Historicism theory. In addition, classical novel analysis was also used in the review of the work. In addition, the works were examined chronologically according to the years of publication. Gül İrepoğlu, one of the writers of recent Turkish literature, enriched her six novels with imaginary elements, taking their starting point from history. In this thesis, the elements in the novels were examined according to the New Historicism theory. Eleven titles determined according to theory were used in the analysis of the novels: These titles are: Introduction of the Novel, Fictionality of History and the Effect of Ideology and Power on Historiography, Time Fiction in the Context of the New Historicist Understanding, Space Fiction in the Context of the New Historicist Understanding, Positioning of the Narrator/Author in the Context of the New Historicist Understanding, Intertextuality, Metafiction, Hyper-textual Design, Pluralism, Collage, Language and Style in the Context of New Historicist Understanding. As a result of the analysis, it was seen that all six novels contained very rich materials in terms of their content in the context of New Historicism.     Lepiota castanea mushroom growing in Turkiye does not contain phallotoxins and amatoxins

    The number of poisoning cases caused by the Lepiota genus is globally increasing. This genus has more poisonous species than the Amanita genus, and many Lepiota species can cause severe toxicity and death if ingested. As recognized in the literature, L. castanea is a toxic species containing amatoxin. Although crude analytical methods have shown that L. castanea contains amatoxins, more recent and sensitive analyses suggest otherwise. Toxin concentrations can vary even among the same fungal species due to geographical and climatic differences. Therefore, this confusion can be resolved by analyzing L. castanea toxins from different geographical regions. This study aimed to demonstrate the toxin levels of L. castanea collected from forests in different regions of Turkiye (Istanbul and Kocaeli) using sensitive methods. The collected mushrooms were analyzed for alpha amanitin, beta amanitin, gamma amanitin, amanin, phallacidin, and phalloidin levels using RP-HPLC-UV and LCESI-MS/MS methods. L. castanea mushroom was found to be free of amatoxin and phallotoxin. Our study revealed for the first time that L. castanea mushrooms from different geographical regions of Turkiye do not contain amatoxin and phallotoxin.     Ontogenetic morphological changes of the venom apparatus in 4 eupelmid egg parasitoids

    Parasitoid wasps, notably egg parasitoids of the family Eupelmidae (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea), a key natural enemy of insect pests, offer a sustainable approach to pest management in agriculture. This study investigated the venom apparatus's developmental dynamics across 4 species of eupelmid egg parasitoids: Anastatus. japonicus, Anastatus fulloi, Mesocomys trabalae and Mesocomys albitarsis. A comprehensive anatomical investigation revealed differences in the dimensions of the venom apparatus across different developmental stages in adult females. We found that the venom apparatus of these 4 studied species consists of a venom gland and a reservoir with an associated Dufour's gland. As the length of post-emergence increases, a significant enlargement in the venom apparatus is evident across all the studied parasitoid species. Notably, M. albitarsis consistently exhibites the shortest venom gland length, whereas that of A. fulloi is the longest among the observed species. At the high day age, the width of venom glands of the 2 Mesocomys species surpasses those of the Anastatus species; for the volume of the venom reservoir, there is a steady increase in all 4 species before the age of 6-7 days, with a decline on 8th day, especially for A. japonicus.     Clinical Difficulties Related to Direct Composite Restorations: A Multinational Survey

    Aims: Composite materials are widely used in dentistry for direct tooth restorations. However, they are highly sensitive to the working technique employed during the restorative procedure. Even minor procedural errors can have a significant impact on the quality including the longevity of the restoration. Hence the aim of this study was to determine the material preferences and analyse the clinical problems associated with direct composite restorations in a cohort of dentists. Methods: A 20-item online questionnaire was created in English and administered 1830 general dentists and specialists in 13 countries. The first section of the questionnaire included four questions to elicit demographic data, and the second section comprised 16 questions focused on material preferences for conservative restorations, durability of composite restorations, and the most challenging stages the dentists faced during the composite restorative procedures. Results: Respondents decided most often to use composite materials for the tooth restorations (OR 997.4, 95% CI 233.8-4254.8, P value <.001). Most respondents indicated that the durability of composite restorations was approximately 7 to 10 years (41.5%). Among the factors affecting durability, maintenance of a dry cavity was the most often reported reason (47.1%) and the foremost challenge faced by dentists (61.0%) during the composite restorative procedures. Conclusions: Our study confirmed that resin-based composites are the most popular material for direct restoration in many countries. Although working with this material is difficult and involves multiple steps, maintaining a dry cavity during bonding, and material application may affect the therapeutic success and durability of these restorations. Clinicians need to be attentive to this issue and be prepared to adapt their decision-making and consider opting for alternative restorative materials, if appropriate. © 2024 The AuthorsUniwersytet Medyczny im.     Developmental Bibliotherapy with Extremely Shy Children

    Extremely shy children may find themselves somehow isolated from society and feel alone. This may cause them to experience different problems at home, at school and in the community. If this situation continues in the following years, the difficulties they experience in life will increase and the probability of their emergence as mental problems such as childhood loneliness, social anxiety disorders, depression and anxiety disorders that negatively affect their quality of life will increase. Thus, it is important to intervene in childhood shyness, social isolation, loneliness, and behavioral inhibition in order to eliminate possible problems that may be experienced in childhood and at the same time to prevent the continuation of the situation in adolescence and adulthood. Developmental bibliotherapy can be used in the context of both prevention and early intervention studies for shyness in early childhood with extremely shy children. In this context, the aim of this study is to provide an in-depth perspective on the concepts of extreme shyness and bibliotherapy, and to present an example of a developmental bibliotherapy session that can be experienced with extremely shy children who are between five to eight years old in early childood period and a sample book list that can be used in the sessions..\

    Analysis of Ionospheric VTEC Retrieved from Multi-Instrument Observations

    This study examines the Vertical Total Electron Content (VTEC) estimation performance of multi-instruments on a global scale during different ionospheric conditions. For this purpose, GNSS-based VTEC data from Global Ionosphere Maps (GIMs), COSMIC (F7/C2)-Feng-Yun 3C (FY3C) radio occultation (RO) VTEC, SWARM-VTEC, and JASON-VTEC were utilized. VTEC assessments were conducted on three distinct days: geomagnetic active (17 March 2015), solar active (22 December 2021), and quiet (11 December 2021). The VTEC values of COSMIC/FY3C RO, SWARM, and JASON were compared with data retrieved from GIMs. According to the results, COSMIC RO-VTEC is more consistent with GIM-VTEC on a quiet day (the mean of the differences is 4.38 TECU), while the mean of FY3C RO-GIM differences is 7.33 TECU on a geomagnetic active day. The range of VTEC differences between JASON and GIM is relatively smaller on a quiet day, and the mean of differences on active/quiet days is less than 6 TECU. Besides the daily comparison, long-term results (1 January-31 December 2015) were also analyzed by considering active and quiet periods. Results show that Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) values of COSMIC RO, FY3C RO, SWARM, and JASON are 5.02 TECU, 6.81 TECU, 16.25 TECU, and 5.53 TECU for the quiet period, and 5.21 TECU, 7.07 TECU, 17.48 TECU, and 5.90 TECU for the active period, respectively. The accuracy of each data source was affected by solar/geomagnetic activities. The deviation of SWARM-VTEC is relatively greater. The main reason for the significant differences in SWARM-GIM results is the atmospheric measurement range of SWARM satellites (460 km-20,200 km (SWARM A, C) and 520 km-20,200 km (SWARM B), which do not contain a significant part of the ionosphere in terms of VTEC estimation

    An Experimental Study on the Effectiveness of the Backward-Facing Step Technique on Small-Scale Horizontal-Axis Wind Turbine Rotor Blades

    The aim of this research work was to explore how modifying the design of small-scale HAWT rotor blades through the backward-facing step technique affects their efficiency under varying wind speeds. The study involved altering step parameters such as location, length, and depth to create four distinct stepped blade shapes and enhance the aerodynamic performance of a rotor with a diameter of 280 mm. A specific blade profile, NREL S822, was selected to meet both aerodynamic and structural criteria. The rotor models were examined at a Reynolds number of 4.7 x 104 for wind speeds between 8.5 and 15.5 m/s and tip-speed ratios between 2 and 5. The experimental results indicated that for certain geometric step parameter values, the efficiency of the rotor model (B3) increased by approximately 47% compared to the base model (B1), particularly for tip-speed ratios lower than around 3.2. However, beyond this point, the rotor efficiency dropped significantly, reaching approximately 60% in one case. Additionally, a hybrid rotor model (B6) was generated by combining the shape of the rotor model (B4) with the most efficient rotor model from the literature, generated using the leading-edge wavy shape technique. This hybrid rotor model enhanced rotor efficiency for specific values of tip-speed ratio and also ensured its smoother operation. Overall, the rotor model (B2), distinguished by smaller step parameter values and a shift as well as broadening of the power coefficient curve towards lower tip-speed ratio values, exhibited a higher peak power coefficient, approximately 1.4% greater than the base rotor (B1). This increase occurred at a lower tip-speed ratio, allowing the rotor to operate with higher efficiency across a broader range of tip-speed ratios

    Assessment of Bohme surface abrasion resistance of natural stones by simple and nonlinear multiple regression methods

    Natural stones are widely used in the construction sector and the physico-mechanical features are very important for them in terms of areas of use. Abrasion is an important phenomenon for causes to decrease in aesthetical and mechanical properties. The Bohme surface abrasion (BSA) test is the widely used test method to determine abrasion resistance, but it is time-consuming, very difficult, and expensive to apply. Because of such difficulties, this study has been conducted to indirectly determine the BSA value of natural stones by some practical methods. For this purpose, BSA, Point load index (Is50), Shore Schlerescope hardness (SSH), Brinell hardness (HB), Rock impact hardness number (RIHN), Coefficient of rock strength (CRS), Crushability index (CI), Impact strength index (ISI), Water absorption (WA), Unit weight (UW), and Porosity (Pg) properties of a total of up 119 rocks, mainly of Turkish rocks, were determined. The main objective of this article is to develop some estimation models for the BSA of different rocks. Two different methods have been utilized in the modeling of data, including simple regression analysis (SRA), and nonlinear multiple regression analysis (NMRA). In addition to the SRA performed using all data sets, the SRA analysis was deepened by classification according to origin, porosity, and strength. A large number of estimation equations were obtained by NMRA performed by applying three different models. The actual BSA values obtained from the laboratory study and the BSA values obtained from the models analyzed with SPSS software were compared using ANOVA analysis and various graphics. The most successful SRA equations derived using the entire dataset were obtained with HB, Is50, and SSH parameters, respectively. In general, there is a significant correlation between various rock properties and BSA, except CRS and CI. For NMRA models constructed with at least three independent variables, the highest predictive power belongs to the equations using (Is50 / HB / UW), (Is50 / HB / CRS), and (Is50 / UW / WA / Pg) parameters, respectively. Rock abrasion has a complex nature. The results of this study strongly support that it is an accurate approach to seek a solution to this complex problem by using parameters such as hardness, strength, and physical properties in the same model

    Alpine periglacial zones in Anatolia: spatial distribution and main characteristics

    Although alpine periglacial studies in Anatolia date back to the 1950s, the distribution of periglacial areas and their general characteristics are poorly known. At present, geographic information systems and remote sensing technologies facilitate the identification of permafrost and periglacial features. In this study, alpine periglacial zones of Anatolia were identified and classified using data on mean annual temperature, Köppen-Geiger climate type, number of snow-covered months, land cover, and terrain classification data, employing Multi-Criteria Decision Making. The periglacial regions in Anatolia are classified into three zones, namely weak, moderate, and severe, based on the coefficient value. Our results indicate that periglacial areas cover 92,362 km2, corresponding to 11% area of Türkiye. Most periglacial regions are in the weak periglacial zone, while only 2% are in the moderate and severe periglacial zones. Periglacial areas are commonly observed between 1750 and 3500 m, and their severity increases with elevation. The mean elevations of weak, moderate, and severe periglacial zones are 2200 m, 2600 m, and 3000 m, respectively. The severe periglacial zones correspond to the summits of high mountains where Quaternary glaciations occurred. The average temperatures of the periglacial zones decrease with the severity of the zones. The annual average temperature of 5.6 °C in the weak periglacial zones decreases to 2.4 °C in the moderate periglacial zones and 0.6 °C in the severe periglacial zones. Total annual precipitation and the number of months with snow cover increase from weak to severe periglacial zones. Weak periglacial zones are snow-covered for an average of 3.3 months per year, while moderate and severe periglacial zones are snow-covered for an average of 5 months and 6.4 months per year, respectively. This study suggests that global datasets can be used to effectively identify alpine periglacial zones in Anatolia, taking into account the characteristics of known periglacial areas. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.Türkiye Bilimler Akademisi, (TÜBA-GEBIP-2023
