Leaf blight caused by Didymella glomerata on blackberry in Turkey
The cultivation of blackberries has recently increased in Turkey, despite the fact that wild blackberry types have grown almost everywhere in the country. During the summer of 2011, leaf blight symptoms were observed in a blackberry vineyard in Karlisu, as well as on wild blackberry plants in Altinozu, Hatay province, Turkey. Based on morphology, fungal isolates obtained from these blighted leaf margins shared similar morphological characteristics and were tentatively identified as Didymella glomerata. To confirm the morphologic identification, the nucleotide sequences of a representative isolate's ITS, LSU, and tub2 regions of DNA were used. The sequences of three regions were 99-100% identical to D. glomerata isolate sequences in GenBank. Healthy blackberry suckers of the thornless blackberry cultivars 'Triple Crown' and 'Chester' grown in pots were inoculated with spore suspension on foliar parts under greenhouse conditions for pathogenicity testing. D. glomerata was extremely virulent, causing severe leaf blight in both blackberry cultivars. D. glomerata was constantly isolated from inoculated plants' leaf lesions. This is the first report of D. glomerata infection of blackberry, a novel host for this pathogen in Turkey and around the world. More research into the biology and management of the disease is required.Mardin Artuklu University [MAU.BAP.18]This work was partially supported by the Mardin Artuklu University Grant Number [MAU.BAP.18.KMYO.044]

Synthesis and characterization of a new eco-friendly dopamine derivative schiff base as an effective corrosion inhibitor for mild steel in acidic environment
The natural corrosion inhibitor behaviour of a newly synthesized dopamine derivative Schiff base (4-DBAB) has been inspected on mild steel in aggressive 1 M HCl using linear polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and potentiodynamic polarization techniques. The Schiff base was synthesized by eco-friendly pathway. Characterization of the synthesized new non-toxic inhibitor was performed using FT-IR and 1H-NMR spectroscopy techniques. The anti-corrosive efficiencies at optimum concentration of 4-DBAB inhibitor was 87.4% after 1 h and 98.4% after 120 h by impedance technique in acidic solution. The potential of zero charge of mild steel was also determined to elucidate the inhibition mechanism in the presence of the highest 4-DBAB solution. The atomic force microscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy researches performed on surface morphology to provide additional support on the interaction between the mild steel surface and 4-DBAB molecules. Adsorption behaviour of the inhibitor was also studied at different durations by experimental inhibition results and showed the Langmuir isotherm involving chemisorption.HighlightsA new dopamine-derived Schiff base (4-DBAB) with natural and environmentally friendly corrosion inhibition properties was synthesized. Characterization of the effects of acetic acid on the recovery of valuable contents from flotation tailings of non-sulfide metals
Non-sulfide lead flotation tailings draw attention in terms of their valuable contents. Dissolution studies have been carried out with strong inorganic acids, especially in ore form, but these acids have been unfavorable in removal in the context of metal recovery processes. Organic acids, on the other hand, are notable for their environmentally friendly properties and selective metal recovery opportunities. In this study, the effects of acetic acid on metal recovery from oxidized waste were investigated with different experimental parameters at a laboratory scale. Optimal conditions were determined depending on the increase in acetic acid concentration. At 0.75-1.0 M acid concentrations, 49-55% Pb and 49-54% Zn recovery efficiencies were obtained with grades of 7.0-7.2% and 19.5-19.7%, respectively. The recovery of Pb/Zn by the leaching process with acetic acid and the selective nonrecovery of iron were also observed through characterization studies. With the Rietveld XRD method, an increase in iron minerals such as goethite and a decrease in smithsonite-hydrozincite minerals were determined. These changes were seen as a decrease in the contents of these minerals in SEM/EDX analysis and as a decrease in smithsonite mineral bond structures in the FT-IR analysis. This study showed that acetic acid has many advantages in the utilization of zinc-lead-containing oxide flotation tailings, which have high economic value, such as selective metal recovery, easy biodegradability, environmental friendliness, and non-corrosiveness.Havadan MiningThe author wishes to thank Havadan Mining for their support
Multiple resistance to EPSPS and ALS inhibitors in Palmer amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri) identified in Turkey
Amaranthus palmeri was first reported in Turkey in 2016, and an immediate heavy infestation of the weed was found in fruit orchards and summer crops such as maize, cotton, and sunflower. There have been farmers' complaints about the ineffective control of Palmer amaranth through the use of glyphosate and some sulfonylureas herbicides. Hence, this study aimed to determine the possible herbicide resistance evolution in Palmer amaranth against glyphosate and acetolactate synthase (ALS) herbicides. Seeds of 21 Palmer amaranth populations were collected from five provinces of Turkey where control problems with glyphosate and ALS inhibitors were reported in maize fields. Seeds of certain biotypes categorized as resistant or susceptible were grown to obtain the F-2 generation. A single-dose experiment determined the possible resistance to ALS inhibitors and glyphosate among the 21 populations. Of this, 18 populations were included in the subsequent dose-response experiments due to evident survival. Based on ED50 values from the dose-response experiment, SNU-04 and ADN-21 biotypes had the highest resistance index for glyphosate which was more than 7. The biotypes ADN-21, OSM-15, and DIR-09 recorded the highest ED50 value with a resistance index of 9.21-10.35 after nicosulfuron application. Whereas, the biotypes SNU-04, OSM-15, and ADN-21 were with the highest ED50 value and resistance index of 6.41-7.44, after the application of foramsulfuron + iodosulfuron methyl-sodium. The increase in genomic 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS) copy number has been observed in suspected cases that have been accepted as the molecular basis for the development of resistance against glyphosate. The sequence alignment results for the ALS gene contained Ala122Val and Pro197Arg mutations related to target-site resistance against ALS herbicides.Turkiye Bilimsel ve Teknolojik Arastirma Kurumu [TOVAG 1230021]Turkiye Bilimsel ve Teknolojik Arastirma Kurumu, Grant/Award Number: TOVAG 123002
Determination of in vitro antimicrobial and antibiofilm activity of Hypericum crenulatum against some food pathogens and its phenolic content
The study investigates the antimicrobial effects of the Hypericum crenulatum ethanolic (HCE) extract against 14 different food pathogens and their biofilm-forming abilities in response to HCE treatment. The phenolic acid composition of the HCE extract was also determined using an HPLC-DAD detector. The antimicrobial activity of HCE extract was assessed using the disc diffusion and microdilution methods. According to the findings, the methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 43300, Listeria monocytogenes RSKK 472, and Listeria innocua ATCC 33090 strains exhibited the lowest minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values at a concentration of 2 mu g mL(-1). Based on the disc diffusion test results, the largest zone of inhibition of HCE extract against foodborne pathogens was seen against Bacillus cereus, and the diameter of the inhibition zone increased with the concentration of HCE extract ( P < 0.05). In terms phenolic acid composition of HCE extract, the phenolic acids with the highest and lowest amounts were caffeic acid (59.92 mg g(- 1)) and p-coumaric acid (13.61 mu g g(- 1)), respectively. Our study determined that HCE extract demonstrated antimicrobial, bactericidal, and antibio fi lm activities against some foodborne pathogens. These effects reveal its potential for improving food safety by inhibiting the growth of these pathogens

Evaluation of mandibular trabecular bone by fractal analysis in pediatric patients with hypodontia of the mandibular second premolar tooth
Background It is still unclear whether the trabecular structure of the jaw is different in individuals with hypodontia than in those without hypodontia; this is important for clinicians. The aim was to determine whether the mandibular trabecular bone structure of children and adolescents with hypodontia differs from the control group by using the fractal analysis (FA) method in this study. Methods A total of 138 panoramic radiographs of 69 cases and 69 control subjects (mean age 13.2 +/- 10.1) were evaluated. The age and gender of subjects in the case and control groups were matched. Three regions of interest (ROIs) were selected from the panoramic radiographs. ROI1 refers to the center of the ramus rising above the mandibular foramen. ROI2 refers to the area between the apical level of the mandibular molar and the upper border of the mandibular canal. ROI3, the missing tooth region, refers to the apical third of the mesial side of the erupting or fully erupted permanent mandibular first molar. Mann-Whitney U and Wilcoxon tests were used. p 0.05). The FD values of the case group were lower than the control group for ROI3 (p < 0.05). Conclusion The results of this study showed that the mandibular trabecular bone quality of pediatric patients with one missing tooth was different from the healthy group. The difference in the mean FD values from the ROIs indicates that the ramus has a denser structure than the mandibular corpus. Clinicians should factor this into their dental treatment planning process

Comparative Investigation of the Color Removal Efficiency of Different Mosses Species from Dye Solutions
In this study, Acid Red 88 (Sodium 4-(2-hydroxy-1-naphthalenylazo)-naphthalenesulfonate) dye solution, which is used extensively in textile industry, was used. Dye removal efficiency determination studies were firstly performed by using three moss species, Chiloscyphus polyanthus, Cinclidotus pachylomoides and Palustriella Falcata (Hedw). In the case of comparison of color removal efficiency of Chiloscyphus polyanthus, Cinclidotus Pachylomoides and Palustriella Falcata (Hedw), it was seen that the species with the highest color removal efficiency with increasing dye concentration was determined for Palustriella Falcata (Hedw). Furthermore, the effect on color removal efficiency was determined at specific concentration, pH and under UVA (Ultraviolet-A) lamp light by using a photo reactor with these mosses species. It has also been detected that these three mosses can be used in photocatalytic studies. Thus, these three mosses species can be employed as color removing material both separately and with UVA light
