(Un)Heilige Klänge: Lärmtoleranz und Religion in der Kolonialgeschichte

    Get PDF
During the Christian missionary efforts in the late 19th century, church members in West Africa complained about indigenous drumming rhythms during Sunday Mass. At the same time, the colonized population saw their local spiritual practices threatened by the loud church bells. Facing these conflicts, colonial administrations were pressured to enforce the promised religious tolerance. This article examines religious tolerance and intolerance between Christian missions and indigenous institutions in colonial West Africa, focusing on the religious disapproval of specific sounds as the basis for noise tolerance and intolerance. The study particularly looks at the interreligious and intercultural perception of bell and drum sounds, using the British colony of Sierra Leone as a case study, and explores how, despite this disapproval, mutual respect was either established or lacking between the conflicting parties. The colonial government attempted to protect both religious rituals with sound accompaniment and the secular right to quiet during the night, in order to meet its moral claim of religious tolerance. It is argued that competition, colonialist racism, and ignorance, in particular, amplified intolerance. The article suggests expanding the historical concept of tolerance beyond intellectual discourses of the past to include the sensory dimensions – such as mutual visibility and audibility – based on the ›disapproval-respect model‹

Identifying Subtle Motor Deficits Before Parkinson's Disease is Diagnosed: What to Look for?

    Get PDF
Motor deficits typical of Parkinson's disease (PD), such as gait and balance disturbances, tremor, reduced arm swing and finger movement, and voice and breathing changes, are believed to manifest several years prior to clinical diagnosis. Here we describe the evidence for the presence and progression of motor deficits in this pre-diagnostic phase in order to provide suggestions for the design of future observational studies for an effective, quantitatively oriented investigation. On the one hand, these future studies must detect these motor deficits in as large (potentially, population-based) cohorts as possible with high sensitivity and specificity. On the other hand, they must describe the progression of these motor deficits in the pre-diagnostic phase as accurately as possible, to support the testing of the effect of pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions. Digital technologies and artificial intelligence can substantially accelerate this process

Changes in Bacterial Gut Composition in Parkinson's Disease and Their Metabolic Contribution to Disease Development: A Gut Community Reconstruction Approach

    Get PDF
Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic and progressive neurodegenerative disease with the major symptoms comprising loss of movement coordination (motor dysfunction) and non-motor dysfunction, including gastrointestinal symptoms. Alterations in the gut microbiota composition have been reported in PD patients vs. controls. However, it is still unclear how these compositional changes contribute to disease etiology and progression. Furthermore, most of the available studies have focused on European, Asian, and North American cohorts, but the microbiomes of PD patients in Latin America have not been characterized. To address this problem, we obtained fecal samples from Colombian participants (n = 25 controls, n = 25 PD idiopathic cases) to characterize the taxonomical community changes during disease via 16S rRNA gene sequencing. An analysis of differential composition, diversity, and personalized computational modeling was carried out, given the fecal bacterial composition and diet of each participant. We found three metabolites that differed in dietary habits between PD patients and controls: carbohydrates, trans fatty acids, and potassium. We identified six genera that changed significantly in their relative abundance between PD patients and controls, belonging to the families Lachnospiraceae, Lactobacillaceae, Verrucomicrobioaceae, Peptostreptococcaceae, and Streptococcaceae. Furthermore, personalized metabolic modeling of the gut microbiome revealed changes in the predicted production of seven metabolites (Indole, tryptophan, fructose, phenylacetic acid, myristic acid, 3-Methyl-2-oxovaleric acid, and N-Acetylneuraminic acid).[...]. Therefore, this research suggests that each individual's diet and intestinal composition could affect host metabolism. Furthermore, these findings open the door to the study of microbiome-host interactions and allow us to contribute to personalized medicine

Ahmad Moftizadeh and the Idea of the Islamic Government: A Discursive Tradition Analysis in the Field of Political Islam

    Get PDF
This article explores the idea of political Islam as a discursive tradition within the context of Iranian Kurdistan. It challenges the prevailing essentialist and universalist approaches commonly used in the analysis of political Islam, advocating for a more adaptable and comprehensive interpretation. By conceptualizing political Islam as a discursive tradition, this study sheds light on the complex interconnections, configurations, and historical contingencies influencing Islamist discourses and movements. The paper argues that political Islam should be examined in relation to other phenomena and discourses, acknowledging its dynamic nature within specific temporal and spatial contexts. Focusing on an influential yet underexplored Islamist discursive tradition in Iranian Kurdistan during the 1970s and 1980s, the research acknowledges the hybrid nature of Islamist discourses, drawing from diverse traditions to fulfill particular objectives. In particular, it explores the perspectives of Ahmad Moftizadeh, a Sunni Kurdish Islamist and the founder of the Maktab Quran (MQ). This study investigates Moftizadeh’s views on the Islamic government, positioning it within the framework of discursive tradition. It analyzes his core categories and inquiries within Islamist thought, notably emphasizing Moftizadeh’s alignment of the Islamic government with the Islamic tradition of the Shura, highlighting its central role in the Islamist discursive tradition

Leaf Anatomical Adaptation and Chloroplast Ultrastructure Changes Upon Magnesium Foliar Application of Faba Bean (Vicia faba L.) Grown Under Drought Stress

Background Drought stress (DS) impedes plant growth and development by impairing the uptake of nutrients, such as magnesium, which is central to many physiological processes, particularly photosynthesis. Leaf application was proposed to be an effective strategy to compensate for inadequate Mg2+ supply from the nutrient solution. Aim The present study is designed to investigate the role of Mg2+ leaf application in ameliorating leaf anatomy and chloroplast ultrastructure changes in faba beans grown under DS. Methods Hydroponically grown plants were subjected to DS under various levels of Mg2+, that is, sufficient (0.5 mM), deficient (0 mM), and leaf-application (250 mM). Light and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were conducted to examine leaf anatomy and ultrastructural changes. Results Mg2+ deficiency alone and under DS significantly affected plant biomass and photosynthesis. Additionally, sucrose concentration, oxidative stress, and lipid peroxidation were increased. Accordingly, the excessive deposition of photoassimilates in source organs due to the inhibition of phloem loading results in a disruption of the thylakoid structures leading to chloroplast damage. In the current study leaf application of Mg2+ partially ameliorated physiological functions, most notably chlorophyll concentration, photosynthesis and transpiration rate, plant biomass, and preservation of ultrastructure of the chloroplast. Conclusion Although the Mg application via roots enhanced drought tolerance, compared to Mg2+ leaf application. However, Mg2+ leaf application was proven to be an efficient strategy in mitigating DS in field trials. Therefore, Mg2+ foliar application should be prioritized for further investigation under relevant environmental stress conditions

Magnesium and its alloys are being investigated increasingly as temporary bone implant materials due to their non-toxicity, biocompatibility, and biodegradability properties. The most challenging aspect of Mg-based implants involves adapting the degradation rate to the human body, which requires extensive in vitro and in vivo testing. Reliable computational models can aid by simulating the degradation and predict its rates. Initially, a comprehensive and in-depth review of the developed degradation models up to date, revealed the fact that developing reliable degradation models is challenging. This is due to the complexity and multi-scale nature of the biodegradation process. Furthermore, biodegradation models are inevitably characterized by uncertainty associated with different aspects of them, i.e. uncertain validation data, parameters, hypothesis and concept as well as simulator limitations. Therefore, it is critical to quantify the uncertainties within these models. Uncertainty quantification (UQ) provides several methods to quantify different sources of uncertainty within computational models. Overall, UQ methods are computationally expensive and require a substantial number of model iterations. Thus, surrogate modelling has gained significant interest in recent years, as these models can substitute expensive models within the UQ analysis. Overall, the current cumulative dissertation presents a clear workflow to quantify uncertainty within different types of biodegradation models. The published work and proposed workflow can serve as a foundation for assessing the influence of uncertainty on the reliability and robustness of the computational models of biodegradation while optimizing the ratio of accuracy and computational cost

Jahrhunderts bis 1990 (Russian Satire after the Collapse of the Soviet Union. Presuppositions of the 20th Century until 1990) - this is the title of the first volume of a three-volume project. After an introduction and a chapter devoted to questions of genre and mode, this volume focuses on central categories of satire: what means exist and can be used in the Soviet 20th century, which victims come into focus, how is the function and effect of satire reflected upon in literary works, and what roles can authors of satire perform? These questions are answered by referring to a broad spectrum of satirical works that deliberately transcend genre boundaries and that are contextualised with reference to 18th and 19th century traditions. This makes it possible to recognise the methods on which the satire of the perestroika years is based and how this changes; at the same time, however, the horizons that opened up for Russian-language satire in the Yeltsin era (Volume 2) and under Putin's rule (Volume 3) can be anticipated.«Русская сатира после распада Советского Союза.

The role of attention in the context of the weapon-focus effect

The weapon-focus effect (WFE) refers to the phenomenon that people’s memory for the appearance of a target person is impaired if that person carried a weapon. Current theories assume that weapons draw attention to themselves, reducing focus on the target. Two proposed causes of this effect are the threat posed by weapons and their unusual nature in many contexts. In the present study, central assumptions of these theories were tested directly by tracking participants’ eye movements as they watched videos of staged robberies. The results showed that weapon presence had no influence on viewing time on the target, and that weapons were not looked at for longer than other objects. The weapons were also looked at for a substantially shorter time than the people involved and were thus not the focus of attention. Instead, there were more complex, time-dependent effects of object type as well as different effects for the viewing times on the target's face and body. A direct comparison of the attentional effects of a weapon and a non-threatening unusual object revealed both similarities and differences. Thus, in addition to the unusualness of weapons, other factors such as threat also seem to be at play. Surprisingly, weapon presence did not generally impair memory of the target person. Thus, the WFE does not appear to be a universal phenomenon. Overall, the results show that under naturalistic viewing conditions, the attentional effects of weapons are more complex than the long-presumed attentional shift from the target to the weapon
