Evolution Quantitativer Krankheitsresistenz gegen Nekrotrophe Schaderreger in Solanum Spezies.
Generalist necrotrophic pathogens like Sclerotinia sclerotiorum threaten many crops worldwide. The absence of complete resistance has driven breeders to rely on quantitative disease resistance (QDR), an incomplete yet broad-range plant defence. However, challenges in linking QDR loci to phenotypes highlight how poorly host regulatory factors are understood. In this thesis, I characterised the QDR diversity of wild tomato populations against S. sclerotiorum. I observed an astonishing diversity of the QDR mechanisms, including infection frequency, lag phase duration, and lesion doubling time (LDT), among and within different species. Using high-throughput phenotyping, I found no correlation between either of the three mechanisms, suggesting the existence of independent biological processes determining QDR. I investigated the shifts in gene expression of genotypes spanning an LDT gradient. Using differential gene expression analysis and different types of network analysis, I observed that basal and highly species-specific gene regulatory networks (GRN) determine LDT-driven QDR. I showed that the conserved NAC29 transcription factor co-opted a role in QDR in Solanum pennellii. Although NAC29 is conserved across all five species, it is only induced upon infection in S. pennellii and is linked to defence-related downstream genes, indicating GRN rewiring. This study demonstrates that complex regulatory rewiring underlies QDR, with lag-phase duration and lesion doubling time (LDT) controlled independently by the host. Evolutionary analysis highlights the role of paralog diversification, followed by lineage-specific co-option into QDR-related gene regulatory networks. These insights improve our understanding of how QDR mechanisms are regulated and evolve, thereby supporting the development of pre-breeding strategies for more effective QDR-focused breeding programs

Evaluating the Effectiveness of 3R (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle) Policies in Sub-Saharan African Cities: A Case Study of Lagos State, Nigeria
This dissertation investigated the effectiveness of 3R (reduce, reuse, and recycle) -based municipal solid waste (MSW) management policies in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), with a focus on Lagos, Nigeria. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study comprised three integrated investigations: (1) a systematic review and meta-analysis of MSW collection across SSA, (2 ) an empirical analysis of the Lagos Recycle Initiative to assess landfill diversion and factors of recycling motivation using integrated machine learning techniques, (3) a content analysis of the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law 2017 regarding its support for the 3Rs. The findings reveal a significantly low MSW collection rate in Lagos (10%) and a negligible recycling diversion rate (0.37%), reflecting gaps in policy implementation and public infrastructure. The study highlights the need for a balanced policy emphasis on the 3Rs and recommends actionable pathways toward achieving a circular economy in the region
Distribution of the four type VI secretion systems in Pseudomonas aeruginosa and classification of their core and accessory effectors.
Bacterial type VI secretion systems (T6SSs) are puncturing molecular machines that transport effector proteins to kill microbes, manipulate eukaryotic cells, or facilitate nutrient uptake. How and why T6SS machines and effectors differ within a species is not fully understood. Here, we applied molecular population genetics to the T6SSs in a global population of the opportunistic pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa. We reveal varying occurrence of up to four distinct T6SS machines. Moreover, we define conserved core T6SS effectors, likely critical for the biology of P. aeruginosa, and accessory effectors that can exhibit mutual exclusivity between strains. By ancestral reconstruction, we observed dynamic changes in the gain and loss of effector genes in the species' evolutionary history. Our work highlights the potential importance of T6SS intraspecific diversity in bacterial ecology and evolution
Monitoring benthic plumes, sediment redeposition and seafloor imprints caused by deep-sea polymetallic nodule mining
A deep-sea (4500 m) trial of a pre-prototype polymetallic nodule collector with independent scientific monitoring revealed that a gravity current formed behind the collector channeled through steeper seafloor sections and traveled 500 m downslope. The prevailing bottom currents dominated sediment dispersion up to the end of the monitoring area at 4.5 km distance. The maximum suspended particle concentration recorded 50 m from mining lanes was up to four orders of magnitude higher than ambient values but decreased rapidly with increasing time, distance, and altitude. Most of the plume remained close to the seafloor, with the highest concentrations at 1 m monitoring altitude and reaching background concentrations at 50 m. Rapid particle flocculation was followed by fast and substantial sediment redeposition. A mm-scale photogrammetric seafloor reconstruction allowed quantitative estimates of the thickness of redeposited sediment next to mining lanes of ≈ 3 cm and a minimum erosional depth of 5 cm
Climate science for 2050
Knowledge of the functioning of the climate system, including the physical, dynamical and biogeochemical feedback processes expected to occur in response to anthropogenic climate forcing, has increased substantially over recent decades. Today, climate science is at a crossroads, with new and urgent demands arising from the needs of society to deal with future climate change, and the need for the climate science community to refine its strategic goals to meet these demands rapidly. All possible—but currently unknown—worlds in 2050, with a larger global population, unprecedented climate conditions with higher temperatures, more frequent extreme weather events, sea level rise, disrupted ecosystems, changes in habitability and increased climate-induced displacement and migration, and the emergence of new geopolitical tensions, will require limiting society’s vulnerability both through mitigation measures to minimize further warming and through the implementation of innovative adaptation initiatives. The development of a skillful climate information system, based on the most advanced Earth system science, will be required to inform decision-makers and the public around the world about the local and remote impacts of climate change, and guide them in optimizing their adaptation and mitigation agendas. This information will also help manage renewable resources in a warmer world and strengthen resilience to the expected interconnected impacts of climate change. In this paper, we summarize the major advances needed to understand the multiscale dynamics of the Earth system. [...] Finally, we speculate about the values and ethics of climate science and the nature of climate research in a world that will be increasingly affected by global warming in a geopolitical context very different from that of recent decades
Observations of Solar Energetic Particles with the Electron Proton Telescope on Solar Orbiter
All the Time in the World?: Reflections on Time in the Framework of Inclusive Education at Primary School Level
This paper focuses time as a key concept for historical learning in the context of inclusive education at primary school level. Based on an overview on inclusive pedagogy and subject-specific inclusive pedagogy a structure for pedagogical reflections is proposed which allows to reflect on educational practice on time at primary school level by interconnecting reflections on personality, sociality and complexity. It is argued that it is not only children's unique and diverse starting points and learning strategies that are significant in connecting children's approaches to time with the curriculum-based requirements, but also the similarities among them in order to unfold the complexity and the fundamental meanings of a foundational concept such as time. Summarising, considerations are made on time as a possible link between child-centeredness and world-centeredness in inclusive education.
