The goal of this thesis is a generalization of Kostant’s Convexity Theorem to the class of (split, minimal) real or complex Kac-Moody groups. Originally, this notion refers to an important result in Lie theory that is related to the problem of describing the group multiplication in a semisimple Lie group in terms of Iwasawa coordinates. In order to prove an analogue of Kostant’s theorem in the Kac-Moody setting, the thesis elaborates on the basic structure and representation theory of Kac-Moody groups & algebras and performs a detailed analysis of the geometry of convex hulls of Weyl group orbits in the Cartan subalgebra of a real or complex Kac-Moody algebra. In the “generic” case of an infinite Weyl group, these convex hulls cannot be investigated using the classical theory of convex polytopes. Instead, the theory of Coxeter groups and the notion of “coloured Coxeter diagrams” are applied in order to describe the face posets of convex hulls of Weyl group orbits and characterize these sets by linear inequalities. Using these ideas, two similar but unrelated results of Kostant, typically known as the “linear” and the “non-linear” convexity theorem, generalize in a natural way to real and complex Kac-Moody groups. In contrast to the usual analytic techniques of Lie theory, the proof favours combinatorial and representation-theoretic methods that extend more easily to this setting and provide an alternative approach in the classical case of Lie groups as well. As a complement to the main results, the thesis presents various applications of the convexity theorems to algebraic properties of real and complex Kac-Moody groups
Impacts of Information Access and Adoption of Soil Fertility and Water Conservation Practices on Smallholder Household Welfare: Experimental Evidence from Uganda
Uganda, like much of Sub-Saharan Africa, depends on rain-fed agriculture with limited input use, making it vulnerable to climate shocks. Rising population pressure, climate change, mainly drought, and the COVID-19 pandemic have worsened food insecurity and poverty, underscoring the need to raise agricultural productivity sustainably. Integrated soil fertility and water conservation practices, such as manure use, mulching, and trenches, can improve crop yields and household welfare while conserving natural resources. However, adoption remains low due to weak extension systems and poor access to information, mostly among women who are central to food production but face greater barriers. Our study implemented a randomized controlled trial in Uganda’s banana-growing regions to promote these practices using multi-channel communication, namely: radio (audio), video and in-person training (audio-visual), and farmer field days and demos (hands-on). We used intent-to-treat analysis to assess impacts on adoption, empowerment, and welfare outcomes including yields, sales, income, and food security. We used machine learning to explore heterogeneity and treatment-on-the-treated analysis to examine the effectiveness of different communication channels. Resilience was analyzed using the RIMA framework and growth regressions. Results show significant increases in the adoption of both individual and combined practices, with the combined yielding the greatest welfare gains. Audio-visual and hands-on training had stronger impacts than audio alone. Women’s empowerment notably enhanced adoption. Households with productive assets, credit access, and social networks showed higher resilience, while the campaign helped buffer against pandemic-related shocks. These findings support integrating mass media and practical approaches into extension and promoting women's access to information, land, and credit to improve adoption, welfare, and resilience
Synthesis and conformational analysis of D-altropyranose derivatives
The Trendermarsch sunken in the Wadden Sea (North Frisia, Germany) – reconstructing a drowned medieval cultural landscape with geoarchaeological and geophysical investigations
Located in the North Frisian Wadden Sea, today's tidal flat sediments cover a formerly cultivated area outside the present-day sea dike of Nordstrand that had been occupied by settlers since the Middle Ages. The intensive cultivation increased the coast's vulnerability to storm floods. Especially the medieval storm surges of the first Grote Mandränke (St Marcellus flood) in 1362 CE and the second Grote Mandränke (Burchardi flood) in 1634 CE destroyed large parts of the diked marshland. This study focusses on the investigation of the drowned part of the medieval Trendermarsch outside the modern sea dike of Nordstrand. [...] Using magnetic gradiometry, we found imprints of at least three settlement sites and a dike segment preserved in the recent tidal flats. Reconstruction of the natural local depositional environment, based on 13 stratigraphic units, initially shows sedimentation under lagoon-like brackish–marine shallow water conditions (unit A), followed by salt marsh formation (units C.1, C.2) and subsequent development of fenlands at around ca. 800 BCE (unit D). A hiatus between a younger marsh formation (unit C.3) at around ca. 650 CE and recent tidal flat deposition (unit G) reveals that evidence of colonisation in the High Middle Ages is mostly preserved as a “footprint”. Still, we found distinct evidence of terp enlargement that indicates different phases of settlement, presumably in response to the threats induced by storm flood events. Using brick-like ashes (unit F.1), we provide the first evidence of some type of (salt) peat processing on a local scale after the second Grote Mandränke and thus after the drowning of parts of the Trendermarsch in 1634 C
Natur - Denken - Handeln
This issue documents some of the results of the Henrik Steffens Masterclasses in fall/winter 2023/2024. The concept was to make these masterclasses a meeting place for Norwegian and German lecturers working on similar topics; at the same time, they were open to Norwegian and German students from the University of Oslo and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, as well as to the public and the Henrik Steffens Network. During these encounters, participants were encouraged to reflect on Norwegian-German differences and similarities in their approaches to key topics in the social sciences and humanities. The contributions presented here were written under the overarching theme Nature – Thinking – Action
Multi-environment field trials for wheat yield, stability and breeding progress in Germany
Multi-environmental trials (MET) with temporal and spatial variance are crucial for understanding genotype-environment-management (GxExM) interactions in crops. Here, we present a MET dataset for winter wheat in Germany. The dataset encompasses MET spanning six years (2015-2020), six locations and nine crop management scenarios (consisting of combinations for three treatments, unbalanced in each location and year) comparing 228 cultivars released between 1963 and 2016, amounting to a total of 526,751 data points covering 24 traits. Beside grain yield, ten agronomic traits, four baking quality traits, plant height, heading date, maturity date and six fungal disease infection indices are included. Additionally, we provide management records, including fertilizer use, plant protection measures, irrigation, and weather data. We demonstrate how this dataset can address four agronomic questions related to GxExM interactions. Further potential applications of the dataset include empirical analyses, genomic and enviromic analyses for breeding targets, or development of decision-supporting models for agricultural management and policy decisions
Polarized vision in the eyes of the most effective predators: dragonflies and damselflies (Odonata)
Polarization is a property of light that describes the oscillation of the electric field vector. Polarized light can be detected by many invertebrate animals, and this visual channel is widely used in nature. Insects rely on light polarization for various purposes, such as water detection, improving contrast, breaking camouflage, navigation, and signaling during mating. Dragonflies and damselflies (Odonata) are highly visual insects with polarization sensitivity for water detection and likely also navigation. Thus, odonates can serve as ideal models for investigating the ecology and evolution of polarized light perception. We provide an overview of the current state of knowledge concerning polarized light sensitivity in these insects. Specifically, we review recent findings related to the ecological, morphological, and physiological causes that enable these insects to perceive polarized light and discuss the optical properties responsible for the reflection of polarized light by their bodies and wings. Finally, we identify gaps in the current research and suggest future directions that can help to further advance our knowledge of polarization sensitivity in odonates
Unsere Aufgaben: Eine Übersetzung ausgewählter Aufsätze von Iwan A. Iljin
Историческая судьба и будущее России, статьи 1948-1954 годов, russisch, hg. von I. Smirnow, Moskau: Rarog, 1992.
Intersectionality and Dis/ability – A Relationship Determination From a History Education Perspective
Social differences and inequalities are constantly constructed and reproduced in historical learning processes. The diversity of students and teachers, as well as the consideration of complex inequalities in connection with the subjects of history lessons, cannot be captured with the help of rigid categories that are viewed in isolation from one another. Rather, to accommodate this diversity, it is necessary to break down one-dimensional perspectives on social inequality and binary thinking. Accordingly, the intersectional approach focusses on the interaction of social differences. Furthermore, the approach of interdependent categories is essential for intersectionality research in history education, according to which inequality relations are inherent in a given category, such as dis/ability. In this context, not only are open and research-led approaches to categories of difference necessary from a history education perspective, but the consideration of dis/ability as an interdependent category seems particularly relevant.
Holopoetry and Virtual Poetry challenge readers in several respects and require a new conceptualization of poetry. In both cases, the reader must become extremely active. It is not enough to interpret a given text, the reader often has to complete it first. In this respect, the boundary between production and reception becomes blurred. The poet creates possibilities in his poem that the reader has to actualize. In addition, in the realm of Holopoetry in particular, time and space become important parameters for the reception of poetry.
