Studying the morphology of lyotropic liquid crystals formed by compositions of phospholipids and artificial azobenzene amphiphiles with in situ small angle X-ray scattering identified their shapes and mesophases and light-induced mesophase transitions from a lamellar to a cubic mesophase were revealed. The formation and transition between cubic mesophases are of high interest for designing drug delivery systems and to study membrane properties during membrane fusions. Embedding photoswitchable glycolipids containing an azobenzene switch into model membranes revealed changes of the monolayer structure and the possibility to control the head group orientation of the glycolipid. The changes in the layer thickness and disappearance of the head group ordering were observed with complementary in situ X-ray reflectivity, grazing incidence diffraction and neutron reflectivity studies. These findings show high potential for photoswitchable glycolipids to control protein and bacteria adhesion at lipid membranes. X-ray reflectivity and fluorescence near total reflection studies on surface near ions in aqueous sodium iodide salt solutions showed a deviation from the expected ion concentration in the bulk suggesting an enrichment of iodide ions at the interface at room temperature. Under UV laser irradiation, the data indicated a change of the iodide concentration at the interface. Studying ion enrichment and depletion at liquid interfaces contributes to understanding and explaining chemical reactions at liquid surfaces. Moreover, ions can be excited by UV laser pulses and the photoreactions occur on time scales of few fs to µs. In preparation to study such photoexcitation, the laser pump - X-ray probe setup at the LISA endstation at P08, PETRA III was upgraded within this thesis to extend the range of delays between the laser and X-ray pulses, to create a uniform laser intensity distribution for heat sensitive samples and to enhance operability

Assessment of Salivary Biomarkers of Gastric Ulcer in Horses from a Clinical Perspective

    Get PDF
This study arises from the search for non-invasive diagnostic alternatives for equine gastric ulceration (EGUS), which is prevalent, clinically variable and only confirmed by gastroscopy. The aim is to quantify five salivary biomarkers (IL1-F5, PIP, CA VI, serotransferrin, albumin) under clinical conditions by validated assays and analyse their diagnostic value. Horses were grouped in No EGUS (neither clinical signs of EGUS nor gastric lesions), EGUS non-clinical (apparently no clinical signs of EGUS but with gastric lesions), and EGUS clinical (obvious clinical signs of EGUS and with gastric lesions). The concentration of 5 analytes could be quantified using sandwich ELISA assays, with high precision (CV: 6.79-12.38%) and accuracy (>95%). Mean salivary levels of IL1-F5, CA-VI, serotransferrin and albumin were significantly higher in EGUS clinical horses compared to No EGUS horses, whereas PIP showed no statistical significance. EGUS non-clinical horses showed statistical differences with No EGUS horses for PIP and albumin. In addition, IL1-F5, CA-VI, serotransferrin and albumin showed moderate accuracy to distinguish between No EGUS and EGUS clinical horses (AUC ≥ 0.8), with sensitivity and specificity greater than 77% and 65%, respectively. Therefore, these biomarkers could be a promising starting point for screening horse that might have EGUS in practice

Impact of Gynecological Interventions on Pelvic Floor Disorders: A Descriptive Analysis of a Case Series in a Hospital-Based Surgical Cohort of 832 Patients

    Get PDF
[...] Patient characteristics-including age, body mass index (BMI), parity, mode of delivery, and symptoms-were collected from medical records. Associations between patient factors and surgical history were assessed using Kendall's Tau (KT) for correlations and relative risks (RRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to evaluate the impact of previous hysterectomies and pelvic surgeries on PFD. Results: First vaginal delivery and age were the strongest factors associated with PFD. BMI had a smaller impact, and multiple vaginal deliveries did not significantly influence apical (KT 0.037), posterior (KT 0.007), anterior midline (KT 0.015), or lateral defects (KT 0.015). Cesarean section was protective. Subtotal hysterectomy showed no significant association with PFD. Total hysterectomy was strongly associated with posterior defects (RR 4.750, 95% CI: 1.871-12.059) and anterior midline defects (RR 1.645, 95% CI: 0.654-4.139). Recurrent urinary infections were associated with abdominal colposuspension (RR 4.485, 95% CI: 1.12-18.03). Dyspareunia occurred more frequently after vaginal (RR 3.971, 95% CI: 0.78-20.14) and abdominal hysterectomy (RR 1.620, 95% CI: 0.32-8.15). Vaginal hysterectomy was linked to fecal incontinence (RR 5.559, 95% CI: 1.17-26.30), MUI (RR 2.156, 95% CI: 1.09-4.23), and UUI (RR 4.226, 95% CI: 1.82-6.85). Conclusions: The factors identified as influencing (PFD) offer a solid foundation for evidence-based patient counseling within our population. Our large dataset confirmed key risk factors, notably childbirth and advancing age. However, the influence of BMI on symptoms and anatomical defects appears to be less significant than previously assumed. Subtotal hysterectomy was not associated with new PFD in our cohort and may represent a viable option when hysterectomy is indicated, though further studies are needed to confirm this potential advantage

Tackling gender in progressive supranuclear palsy: Male patients present more apathy

    Get PDF
Gender differences in progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) may become relevant for clinical trials, treatment decisions and patient counseling. To study gender associated differences we conducted a retrospective data analysis of 191 male and 157 female PSP patients from a large multicenter observational cohort in Germany. While no differences in motor skills, disease severity, daily living abilities, global cognitive status and depressive symptoms were observed between genders, male patients showed significantly higher apathy scores, a finding also noted in other neurological diseases. In this study, apart from male patients exhibiting higher levels of apathy, no significant disease-specific gender differences were observed in PSP patients

    Get PDF
Jahrhunderts. On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the University of Zagreb’s foundation in 1874, this article examines the congratulatory message sent from the University of Kiel. Drawing on archival sources, it reconstructs how Kiel’s rectorate and faculty received the invitation to the opening ceremony, deliberated, and eventually composed a congratulatory letter in Latin. The study highlights linguistic misunderstandings concerning address and terminology, as well as the prominent role of Latin as a neutral lingua franca in academic communication. The Kiel message emphasized the dual purpose of the new university: to serve both the »salvation of the fatherland« and the »benefit of art and science.« This reflects the institution’s role in Croatian nation-building while remaining embedded within the Habsburg Monarchy. A comparison with Kiel’s own university and seminar traditions further illustrates the intertwined development of scholarship and national identity in 19th-century Central Europe

Effectiveness, safety and quality‐of‐life effects of guselkumab and ustekinumab in patients with psoriasis: Week 104 results from the non‐interventional, prospective, German multicentre PERSIST study

    Get PDF
Methods Patients (≥18 years of age) received guselkumab or ustekinumab as per routine clinical practice. Outcomes to W104 were examined separately in guselkumab and ustekinumab recipients. An ad hoc exploratory analysis of outcomes with guselkumab versus ustekinumab was also performed following propensity score matching. Results Overall, 302 and 313 patients received guselkumab and ustekinumab, respectively. Patients in both cohorts experienced improvements in disease activity and QoL that were maintained to W104, with 64.7% and 63.6% of guselkumab- and 54.6% and 64.4% of ustekinumab-treated patients achieving a Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) 90 response and a Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) 0/1 score, respectively. Propensity score matching yielded well-balanced baseline characteristics except for prior biologic use, which was higher in guselkumab versus ustekinumab recipients (51.7% vs. 32.0%). Achievement of PASI ≤1 at W104 was more common in guselkumab versus ustekinumab recipients (58.7% vs. 49.7%). The W104 PASI90 response rate was 65.6% with guselkumab and 56.0% with ustekinumab; corresponding rates for PASI100 were 44.3% and 28.5%. In guselkumab recipients, response rates were higher in biologic-naïve versus biologic-experienced patients (PASI90, 77.1% vs. 53.4%; PASI100, 55.0% vs. 33.0%). A high level of response for QoL outcomes was observed for both treatments. Conclusions Ustekinumab and guselkumab led to improvements in physician-assessed and patient-reported outcomes that were sustained for up to 2 years, with no new safety signals identified. Following propensity score matching, greater improvements in PASI outcomes were observed with guselkumab versus ustekinumab. Improvements with guselkumab were highest in biologic-naïve patients, highlighting the value of early treatment

The late Pliensbachian to early Toarcian (Early Jurassic, ~183 Ma) records profound environmental perturbations, associated with global rise in temperatures. Climate change was linked to greenhouse gases emissions, as inferred from a globally expressed negative Toarcian carbon isotope excursion (T-CIE). At some shelf areas, such as the European Epicontinental Basin System (EEBS), Toarcian warming favoured the development of oxygen-deficient conditions that culminated in the genesis of the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event (T-OAE). Upper Pliensbachian to lower Toarcian strata, exposed in the Hondelage Section (northern Germany) has been studied by sedimentological and paleontological approaches. These immature black shales provide favourable conditions for organic matter (OM) and biomarker perseveration. Thus, the section represents an ideal sedimentary archive to better understand the environmental changes during the early Toarcian, to study their impact on marine ecosystems, depositional conditions, and to identify possible contributing factors. This thesis is based on the parallel application of different geochemical approaches, including inorganic, organic and isotope geochemistry. The thermally immature sediments of the Hondelage succession preserve a diverse biomarker inventory. In particular Hopanoid biomarkers, often applied tools for paleoenvironmental reconstruction, are present as various diagenetic transformation products. This allows to trace diagenetic alteration of hopanoids, assess the environmental implications of their composition and hints towards potential precursor molecules and source organisms

    Get PDF
Classical mythological figures such as Odysseus, Penelope, Hercules, Medusa, Pandora, Athena, and Jason form an integral part of Western cultural heritage. Central to their transmission is Ovid’s Metamorphoses, which has left a lasting impact on literature, music, and visual arts from antiquity to the present. The reception of Ovid’s transformation stories ranges from Christian interpretations like the Ovide moralisé to secular-political uses in early modern iconography. This study focuses on the largely overlooked Summer Hall (1692) in the Liebenstein building of the Diakonie Stetten, richly decorated with scenes from Ovid’s Metamorphoses based on the emblem book by Abbé Michel de Marolles (1655). The imagery is analyzed in relation to the contemporary chapel in nearby Kernen-Stetten, commissioned by Duchess Magdalena Sibylla of Württemberg, who also initiated the Summer Hall. The study explores thematic connections between the two spaces and situates them within their broader historical context—addressing the Duchess’s biography and Swedish upbringing, the influence of Flemish baroque art (e.g., the Rubens school), emblem culture (possibly linked to the Fruchtbringende Gesellschaft), and Jesuit readings of Ovid. This interdisciplinary contribution sheds light on the cultural role of Ovid in early modern artistic and educational settings
