Co-selection of antimicrobial resistance in livestock pathogens and zoonotic agents
This dissertation investigated the effects of post milking teat disinfectants on bacterial susceptibility, prevalence of culturable teat bacteria, and cross-resistance to antibiotics. Chapter one investigated effects of a 6 days intervention with chlorhexidine (CH), lactic acid (LA), and untreated at 2 and 13 weeks after the intervention. For this, 476 bacterial isolates from 224 milk samples were identified by MALDI-ToF MS. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of CH and LA was determined for 404 isolates, and mastitis antibiotics were tested for Aerococcus (A.) viridans (n = 36) and Staphylococcus (S.) haemolyticus (n = 85). The results showed, both disinfectants were effective against udder pathogens. However, selection of Corynebacterium (C.) spp. was sustained all time points compared to before treatment; simultaneously, a significant increase in LA tolerance was observed in S. haemolyticus and A. viridans. Antibiotic susceptibility, showed minimal changes. These results underscore the potential for adaption of udder pathogens to disinfectant and shifts in the teat microbiome, possibly due to subinhibitory exposure. Chapter two investigated in vitro effects of subinhibitory LA exposure. Where, S. haemolyticus (n=5), A. viridans (n=9), and C. bovis (n=6), were exposed to a subinhibitory concentration of LA for 30 days. Tolerance to LA was continuously assessed as MIC values using macrodilution. Changes in antibiotic MIC were measured before and after LA exposure using microdilution. Results showed a significant increase in tolerance to LA and β-lactam antibiotics in A. viridans, with a modest change in S. haemolyticus. No such change was observed in C. bovis. This suggests that A. viridans and S. haemolyticus have the potential to develop tolerance to LA and cross-resistance to β-lactam antibiotics
MEMS Technology for Adaptive Sensors
This research presents the design, development, and experimental validation of a bio-inspired MEMS-based acoustic sensor with dynamically tunable resonance frequencies. The objective is to develop a sensor capable of efficiently analyzing and processing information directly at the sensor level. Inspired by human auditory system, the sensor mimics the ear’s ability to selectively respond to different frequencies with high sensitivity. Dynamic tuning allows a wider frequency spectrum within a single sensor beam, reducing the number of sensors required. Two tuning approaches are demonstrated: (i) Geometric nonlinearity (ii) Ni-Ti shape memory alloys (SMAs) In the first approach, clamped-clamped micromechanical beam achieves up to 25% resonance-frequency tunability with low bias voltages (<1 V). DC actuation modifies the beam’s pre-deflection, shifting its resonance frequency. A nonlinear dynamic model based on the Duffing equation describes system behavior, including hardening and softening effects. Experiments validate the sensor’s ability to compensate for fabrication variations and perform frequency-component analysis of sound signals. In the second approach, Ni-Ti SMA thin films deposited on the sensor’s backside enable reversible frequency shifts via temperature-driven phase transformations, achieving up to 25% tunability. The shape memory effect imparts memory-like behavior with transformation hysteresis, enhancing functionality. This marks a step toward intelligent MEMS sensors integrating sensing, actuation, and SMA for autonomous adaptation without external systems. Combining both approaches enables frequency-selective sensing over a broader range. Applications include bio-acoustic monitoring, gas-flow detection, and frequency-selective signal processing, providing a foundation for advanced sensor networks with real-time dynamic adaptation and memory-based frequency tuning
Automated Oil Spill Detection System Using Spaceborne Synthetic Aperture Radar with Deep Learning-Based Algorithm
Oil spills are one of the major sources of marine pollution. They cause environmental damage and affect marine wildlife. In order to take early action in oil spill incidents, an automated system for the regular monitoring and detection of oil spills can be beneficial. In the frame of this thesis, such an automated oil spill detection system has been developed and its potential for integration into an early warning system has been demonstrated. The system identifies oil slicks in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images with a custom trained deep learning-based object detector and provides binary masks of oil as output using a segmentation algorithm. The system has been tested in the Southeastern Mediterranean Sea for a year of acquisitions in 2019, demonstrating the ability of using such an automated system in operation to reduce the effort of manual interpretation. Complete records of oil spills, especially those from illegal operations, are often missing or unavailable to the public, so collecting and annotating oil slicks is usually the first task when developing a deep learning-based method for oil slick detection. As a result, different published methods use different datasets, making it difficult to compare the diverse approaches. Therefore, a ready-to-use dataset has been published as part of this thesis, which contains oil slicks and look-alikes that originate from other phenomena but may be misinterpreted as oil slicks in SAR data. The performance of the object detector used in the developed system was evaluated on image patches from different sources, providing a baseline for other studies to use for comparison. In addition, this thesis provides a comprehensive explanation of how various oceanic and atmospheric phenomena manifest in SAR scenes, thus bridging the knowledge gap between readers with different backgrounds, such as remote sensing, oceanography, and machine learning
Paleogenomic insights into European Neolithic populations and the genetic basis of modern disease risk
Investigations of prehistoric populations through ancient DNA have transformed our understanding of the demographic processes that shaped modern genetic diversity. One of the most profound changes in human prehistory was the advent and spread of agriculture, which defined the Neolithic period and initiated major cultural and biological transformations across Europe. Modern Europeans are largely formed from three primary ancestral components that began to admix during the Neolithic: local hunter-gatherers, incoming Anatolian farmers, and later Steppe herders. With the recent increase in available ancient genomes, it has become clear that these demographic events were not uniform, but instead reflected a mosaic of complex and regionally variable processes. This thesis aimed to contribute to this growing field by addressing three main questions. First, I investigate regional population structure and dynamics for ten selected Neolithic sites across present-day Germany and Russia. Second, I examine the variation in immune genes belonging to the highly polymorphic human leukocyte antigen (HLA) system within these populations and assess how this variation was affected by demographic processes. Third, I explore how ancestral genetic components contribute to present-day variation in immune-related disease risk, with a focus on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a major chronic condition in modern Europeans. In this thesis, I demonstrate how the regional demographic complexity of the Neolithic not only shaped patterns of genetic diversity but also influenced immune gene variation and the ancestral contributions to modern disease risk, linking past population dynamics to health outcomes observed today
Condolences from Scientists on the Death of Max Planck in 1947
Max Planck was one of the most important scientists of the 19th and 20th centuries. His discovery of the quantization of electromagnetic radiation, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1918, made him world-famous. He was also held in high esteem as a person of integrity, which is clearly reflected in the letters of condolence sent to his widow, Marga Planck, from all over the world on the occasion of his death on October 4, 1947. This article summarizes some of the condolences from scientists and scientific institutions. Among them are 18 letters from Nobel Prize winners. The authors of the letters are by no means exclusively from the field of physics. They give an idea of the multi-layered and distinctive scientific network of Planck and of the high respect he had within the academic community during his lifetime.
This paper examines the concept of intersectionality from a historical, methodological, and education-specific perspective. It begins by exploring the theoretical roots of the term, which can be traced back to Black feminism research in the United States in the 1970s, among other sources. It then goes on to discuss the role of Kimberlé W. Crenshaw in the conceptual constitution of intersectionality. The following chapter addresses research-relevant debates surrounding the concept, discussing not only its (still untapped) potential but also its (theoretical and methodological) limitations. In the context of educational processes, possible intersectional approaches for schools are discussed as well as practical implementation options for various subjects, based on our previous considerations of the concept of intersectionality. The paper concludes with a summary of all the contributions to this anthology
The importance of communicating research findings to policy and practice has grown considerably in recent years. Taking the example of geographical migration research, this contribution discusses this development from the perspective of research ethics and intersectionality and proposes the intersectional multi-level analysis according to Winker and Degele as a framework for reflection on different transfer formats. Subsequently, the contribution looks at three formats of research transfer using this analytical approach: Fact Sheets/ Brochures, Focus Group Discussions and City Walks on local migration histories. The article concludes with thoughts on the better integration and in-depth reflection of transfer formats in the design and implementation of scientific research projects
In their article Maren Bienert and Sonja Thomaier explore how intersectionality shapes contemporary theological scholarship. They survey prominent approaches and insights across the main theological disciplines (biblical studies, religious education, church history, and systematic theology) with a special focus on how intersectional thinking influences Protestant religious education. Bienert and Thomaier offer a dual perspective: On the one hand, they ask how theological scholarship has responded to intersectionality, focusing especially on the well-established triad of race, class, and gender. On the other hand, they turn to the question of how theology frames religion as an intersectional phenomenon, illuminating diverse challenges, conceptual pathways, and areas where future inquiry is needed
The publication documents the exhibition Banned Books – Zensiert, verboten, verbrannt (Banned Books – Censored, Forbidden, Burned), which was shown at Kiel University Library in April 2025. The exhibition focused on banned books as witnesses to political and social shifts in power. It illustrated how books have been censored, burned or suppressed over the centuries—from antiquity to the present. At its core were works that stand for freedom of expression, intellectual independence, and cultural memory. Using selected examples, the exhibition explored mechanisms of censorship, the role of courageous authors, librarians and teachers, and the continued relevance of the topic in times of digital information control
