Development of a technique for 3D grain reconstruction of fine grained structures via nano diffraction: Implementation of nano grain mapping at the PETRA III beamline P03
Understanding the microstructure of materials is crucial in many research fields, from aerospace engineering to energy production. The mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties of polycrystalline materials are strongly influenced by their internal grain structures. 3D X-Ray Diffraction (3DXRD) microscopy allows for non-destructive investigation of polycrystalline materials. This technique is of great importance in materials science, as understanding grain size, orientation, and distribution is crucial for predicting material properties and performance. However, the resolution of these methods is inherently limited by factors such as beam size, detector pixel size, and the precision of the rotation stage used during measurements. This dissertation addresses the development and implementation of a technique for three-dimensional grain structure analysis of nano-grained polycrystalline materials. This technique was specifically developed for the beamline P03 at the PETRA III synchrotron radiation source to enable a high-precision and spatially resolved characterization of micro- and nanostructures in materials. The focus of the work is on the detailed development of the experimental setup, which allows the acquisition of 3D datasets of grain structures using hard X-rays. The setup includes components for precise alignment and rotation of samples, which enable high-resolution analysis of complex polycrystalline structures. Major challenges included achieving reliable rotation with high precision for the measurements and preparing the measurement data to ensure a successful reconstruction. The results of the first successful measurements are presented, confirming the functionality and precision of the developed system. It has been demonstrated that the developed setup provides detailed insights into the grain structure of polycrystalline materials, which were previously only achievable with destructive methods
Essays in Empirical International Economics: Corporate Responsibility, Firms' Foreign Ownership and Global Value Chain Participation
In this thesis, I aim at better understanding the relationship between (sustainable) corporate governance and firms' internationalization in the context of developing and emerging countries. The research questions are mainly addressed empirically using firm-level data from developing and emerging countries. This thesis is structured in the following four chapters, each representing a standalone paper. Chapter 2 adds insights to the debate about whether Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) represents a blessing for or an impediment to economic, social, and political development in FDI host countries by analyzing whether the presence of foreign investors impacts the occurrence of petty corruption. Chapter 3 also addresses the impact of foreign investment, but analyzes the effects of FDI on firm performance, more precisely on firms’ green management practices. Chapter 4 turns to the analysis of firms’ participation in global value chains (GVCs), more specifically, the role of GVC positioning for firms’ Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) investments. Finally, Chapter 5 goes beyond the role of voluntary corporate governance and analyzes whether mandatory changes in corporate governance affect firm performance
Vorwort
Wolf Vostell (1932-1998), who as the central protagonist of the Fluxus concerts and founder of European happenings, co-founded action art, a pioneer of video art and the plastic theory of and the sculptural theory of object art, is one of the most influential German artists of the second half of the 20th century. With his action art he exploded the classical aesthetic categories and created sensual spaces for events and experiences in which he repeatedly the categorical distance between artwork and viewer: Art became dangerous, active participation in the performative situations and distanced reception became impossible. This Vostell's early actions of the 1950s and 1960s in the context of an expanded concept of the image that goes beyond the visual and ties in with art philosophical discourses on the interaction between image and performativity.
Assessing Herbicide Resistance: Mathematical Models of Weed Management and Resistance Evolution
Since the dawn of agriculture, crop production has been challenged by pests, among them weeds, causing the highest potential yield losses. Ever since, farmers have been searching for strategies to protect their crops, such as hand weeding and later mechanical control measures. The commercialisation of selective herbicides after World War II has revolutionised crop production, providing an easy and highly effective solution to weed management. Today, widespread resistance threatens the sustainability of herbicides and cropping systems. Herbicide resistance is a highly replicated example of rapid adaptation to human-mediated selection, extensively studied for more than 60 years, primarily in terms of mitigation practices. Yet, the precise determinants of the rate and nature of herbicide resistance evolution and how management practices alter the underlying eco-evolutionary processes remain poorly understood – especially in perennial species. In this thesis, I employ population dynamic models to identify critical factors defining the probability, timing, and source of resistance adaptation in a perennial weed and evaluate strategies to limit herbicide resistance evolution. The approaches developed in the individual chapters are tailored to address specific aspects of herbicide resistance evolution and the management of seed- and rhizome-propagated perennials. In essence, I analyse how specific life history traits and details of the resistance mechanism affect the adaptation and assess the sustainability of management interventions. Capturing population-level dynamics in the active weed population and the dormant seed bank, the models allow me to study the role of a seed bank in herbicide resistance evolution. This work aims to provide mechanistic insights into the eco-evolutionary processes driving herbicide resistance adaptation, highlighting the value of weed population dynamic models for gaining a holistic understanding of these dynamics
Imaging magnesium-based implants and their biological surroundings
This doctoral thesis investigates the clinical potential of biodegradable magnesium (Mg)-based orthopaedic implants, focusing on their effects on bone remodelling, MRI artefacts, and RF-induced heating. A literature review on Mg alloy behaviour in MRI complements the work. The first study examines how Mg implants influence the lacuno-canalicular network (LCN), essential for bone remodelling. Using synchrotron-based X-ray microscopy, it compares untreated and plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO)-treated WE43 screws in sheep bone. PEO-treated implants promote healthier lacunar shapes, while untreated ones yield a more connected LCN, potentially enhancing trauma response. The second study assesses MRI artefacts caused by Mg implants through in vitro, ex vivo, and clinical imaging. Artefacts decrease as the implant degrades, especially when imaging is perpendicular to the implant axis. Compared to titanium, Mg-based implants consistently produce fewer artefacts, supporting their use in post-operative MRI. The third study explores RF-induced heating during MRI. WE43 screws were degraded in vitro, and temperature changes were measured. The highest heating occurred before degradation, with reduced heating as the degradation layer formed. Heating levels were comparable to titanium, highlighting the need for MRI safety standards to include biodegradable materials. Together, these studies advance understanding of Mg-based implants, supporting their safe and effective use in orthopaedic surgery and imaging
Miniaturisierung von Proteomics-Probenvorbereitung mittels digitaler Mikrofluidik
Approaches for mass spectrometry-based proteomics have experienced significant sensitivity improvements in recent years, making the analysis of limited sample amounts feasible. However, due to factors such as manual pipetting errors and the large volumes of reactants used, conventional proteomics protocols are not applicable for low-input proteomic sample processing. In nanoproteomics, sample preparation methods are tailored to the analysis of minute amounts of sample or even single cells. In this work, digital microfluidics as a liquid handling technology was introduced, adapted, and optimized for miniaturized proteomics sample preparation. This comprised four experimental sub-projects focusing on the development of suitable sample preparation steps and technical adaptations for digital microfluidics. The primary objective was to achieve both qualitative and quantitative proteome analyses of very small sample quantities
Teaching the Writing of Historical Narrations as an Instrument in Inclusive Learning Settings: Designing Culture- and Language-Sensitive History Lessons Through a Genre-Based Cycle, Bridging Foreign Language Teaching and Inclusive Education
Based on a broad concept of inclusion, this paper discusses the importance of language-sensitive history teaching and the practical implementation of language support. Using the genre cycle as a method to promote the deconstruction and reconstruction of historical narratives, students should further develop their narrative skills. By using the genre cycle, students should develop their competence in different text genres of historical learning.
