Nanoparticle synthesis using the atmospheric pressure plasma source HelixJet
Nanoparticles hold unique properties such as high surface-to-volume ratios or quantum confinement effects, making them viable for countless applications in various scientific fields such as biomedicine, catalysis, detectors and sensing, opto-electronics or energy storage and harvesting. This thesis focuses on the synthesis and surface modification of silicon and metal nanoparticles, as well as multi-elemental core-shell or Janus particles using atmospheric plasma jets as a tool. Both a bottom-up approach in the form of gas phase synthesis using the reactive gas silane as well as a top-down approach using solid state source materials are demonstrated. As a first step, the HelixJet atmospheric plasma source is modified for a long term operation at high admixtures of reactive gases. Particles synthesized in the gas phase are analyzed using a Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS) and their crystallographic structure is made visible using Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). For a suitable set of parameters, silicon nanocrystals with diameters in the range of 3 to 7 nanometeres are synthesized. Measurements reveal a strong photoluminescence (PL) intensity in the visible red spectral region for these silicon nanocrystals. The combination of silicon particle synthesis and a fly-through annealing stage results in the formation of Janus particles with a special half-sphere structure containing a silicon-manganese alloy. When introducing a source metal wire into the middle axis of this jet, metal particles are produced even from high melting point metals such as tungsten. The influence of plasma parameters, such as power and gas flow, on the particle morphology and crystal structure is investigated using transmission electron microscopy, revealing that the average size of the tungsten nanocrystals can be tuned
Nerve net formation in Hydra embryos - novel approaches and insights
In summary, this research highlights the self-organizing and activity-driven nature of neural circuit formation in Hydra embryos, offering insights into the evolution and fundamental principles of nervous systems. Using calcium indicators and immunohistochemistry, the functionality and topology of the emerging nerve net during the early development of embryos and hatchlings are compared and examined. A developed recording pipeline to perform long-term Ca2+ activity during early nerve net assembly allows for profound insights in the fundamental processes of nerve net construction and functionality at single-cell resolution. Furthermore distinct, unsynchronized neuronal networks in different regions of specific developmental stages, which later integrate into a synchronized nerve net in adult polyps are observed, shedding light on fundamental principles of neural connectivity. Examinations of temperature-related influences during the formation of the nerve net are shown, revealing that colder temperatures display a beneficial impact on the network assembly, whereas warmer conditions negatively affect the N4 population-specific involvement in the eating behavior, leading to deficits and a 40% mortality rate. Further, this work analyzed the microbial influences during embryogenesis by examining the nerve net construction and neuronal branches in wild-type, germ-free and recolonized hatchlings. The findings suggest a pivotal role of the commensal bacteria in the number of neurons and their neuronal connectivity. The findings in this work also have implications for understanding neural development in more complex organisms and the crucial role of environmental factors such as temperature and the microbiome on the nerve net assembly during early developmental stages
Visible Light Positioning and Communication Using Liquid Crystal Display Aided Receivers
To complement Wi-Fi and 5G, LED-based visible light communication (VLC) is required to support multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) communication scenarios, where multiple receivers are simultaneously provided with individual high-rate data links. However, these scenarios are among the main challenges of VLC, because neighboring light sources (LSs) cause modulated interference. As a solution approach, an innovative optical receiver has been developed at the Chair of Information and Coding Theory, Kiel University, which employs a liquid crystal display (LCD) as dynamic optical filter. This enables adaptive interference suppression. This cumulative dissertation continues investigations with the LCD-based receiver. In particular, a novel technique for angle-of-arrival (AoA) estimation of LSs is invented, which is based on the beamforming principle known from radar. Initially, a single LS is considered and properties influencing the AoA estimation are investigated. Then, the AoA estimation signal is modeled, the bar algorithm is developed to improve localization runtime, and compressive sensing algorithms are investigated. Further investigations reveal that successful AoA estimation of multiple LSs depends on their angular distance. For closely spaced LSs, a novel non-negative least squares (NNLS) algorithm is developed. Two experimental setups are built. The first confirms simulation results on LCD diffraction effects. The second confirms simulations on LS separation and includes the novel NNLS algorithm. To enable LS identification, the efficient joint light source identification and localization (JLIL) principle is developed. Simulations show that information on localization as well as on identification can be obtained jointly from the received signal. Furthermore, the JLIL principle resolves detection ambiguities
Photovoltaics on agricultural land: Competition for use, land use efficiency and profitability of different concepts
In the future, the expansion of ground-mounted PV systems in Germany will mainly take place on agricultural land, which can lead to conflicts of use with agricultural production. Against this background, this cumulative dissertation is dedicated to the following questions: (1) How high is the land use efficiency of ground-mounted PV systems? (2) What conflicts of use arise with agricultural land use? (3) To what extent and at what cost can land use competition be improved with the help of agrivoltaic concepts? With the following results: - In 2018, a total of 25,500 ha were claimed by ground-mounted PV systems, 52% of which were on arable land and 15% on grassland. This corresponds to 0.1% of the area used for agriculture in Germany. - The economic viability of ground-mounted PV systems depends heavily on the size of the system and the distance to the grid feed-in point. Larger systems can exceed the agricultural willingness to pay for the area more than tenfold. - Land use efficiency in the form of land energy yields is significantly higher for ground-mounted PV systems in the electricity, heat and transport sectors than for biogenic renewable energies. A change in land use could therefore increase land use efficiency. - In the case of agrivoltaic concepts with dual use of the land, it can largely continue to be used for agricultural purposes. However, the analysis of different agrivoltaic concepts shows that these advantages are associated with higher costs. The higher electricity generation costs lead to costs for maintaining one hectare of agricultural land that exceed the agricultural added value many times over
Pilot Study: Step Width Estimation with Body-Worn Magnetoelectric Sensors
Step width is an important clinical motor marker for gait stability assessment. While laboratory-based systems can measure it with high accuracy, wearable solutions based on inertial measurement units do not directly provide spatial information such as distances. Therefore, we propose a magnetic estimation approach based on a pair of shank-worn magnetoelectric (ME) sensors. In this pilot study, we estimated the step width of eight healthy participants during treadmill walking and compared it to an optical motion capture (OMC) reference. In a direct comparison with OMC markers attached to the magnetic system, we achieved a high estimation accuracy in terms of the mean absolute error (MAE) for step width (≤1 cm) and step width variability (0.88) of individual feet were still encouraging, but the accuracy was negatively affected by a constant proxy bias (3.7 and 4.6 cm) due to the different anatomical reference points used in each method. The high accuracy of the system in the first case and the high precision in the second case underline the potential of magnetic motion tracking for gait stability assessment in wearable movement analysis
Phosphoproteomanalysen identifizierten zahlreiche potenzielle Substrate, u. a.
Inclusive History Education, Historical Thinking, and Historical Consciousness
This paper discusses the research on inclusive history education with the aim of reassessing what might be formulated as a goal for history education in general and for students with special educational needs in particular. In English language research on inclusive history education, there appears to be a particular focus on the development of historical thinking in learners and, for this reason, the research has been mainly concerned with how educational interventions should be organised. Whilst this research is very valuable, it is argued here that there is a need to address what is perceived to be the aim of history teaching and a number of aims for history teaching are outlined. A view of inclusive history teaching inspired by the Gadamerian concept of historical consciousness is then proposed to broaden the scope of what we see as the goal of inclusive history teaching and to consider the different challenges that teachers and learners may face in the subject of history.
The Representation of the Writers’ Images in Works of Art (Anime / Manga)
The article explores the principles underlying the portrayal of real-life writers as characters in artistic works, using the anime Bungo Stray Dogs as a case study. As part of a broader investigation, more than ten characters were analyzed, focusing on the relationship between their biographical prototypes and their fictional representations, as well as the connection between each author’s literary work and the supernatural abilities attributed to their corresponding character. Based on the findings, a classification of different types of writer-character relationships was developed. This article presents two exemplary figures to illustrate these connections
This dissertation examines the development, implementation, and evaluation of a digital learning environment designed to support students’ conceptual understanding of chemical reactions in upper secondary education. The design follows the ECD4LPA framework, integrating authentic learning and assessment formats grounded in multimedia learning principles and domain related models of learning. The goal was to systematically foster competence development while generating rich data to trace individual learning trajectories and identify difficulties early on. Empirical findings demonstrate substantial learning gains and confirm that the environment effectively produces meaningful data for process-oriented diagnostics. Open-ended assessment formats proved particularly powerful for capturing complex reasoning that often remains invisible in traditional tests. Analyses of task and learner characteristics highlight the central role of prior knowledge and the influence of chemical representations on learning about chemical reactions. Additionally, the reconstruction of individual knowledge networks from open-response data revealed challenges in connecting key concepts, offering valuable insights for targeted feedback. At the same time, the work identifies relevant challenges, including implementation fidelity, assessment workload, heterogeneous digital infrastructure, and the need for teacher professional development to ensure effective classroom use. The dissertation stresses that digital learning innovations must align with curricular requirements and school contexts to be successful. Overall, this research provides foundational insights and practice-oriented implications for incorporating digital, data-driven learning environments into chemistry and broader science education. It highlights both the potential and limitations of such systems in advancing conceptual understanding and outlines important directions for future work
