Physical fitness level in university students : Assessment using physical fitness test of Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology
P(論文)The purpose of this study was to investigate the physical fitness levels of university students. A total of 162 subjects (113 males and 49 females, mean aged 18.2 ± 1.04 yr) participated in the study. The subjects performed 6 tests including a 20-m shuttle run, hand grip strength, and hamstring and lower back flexibility tests, sit-ups, a side-to-side jump and a forward standing jump. Compared with All Japan physical fitness tests performed in 2009, the hand grip strength among male students was significantly lower (48.0 ± 7.2 kg vs. 45.1 ± 8.7kg, p<0.001), the 20-m shuttle run was significantly faster in both male and female students. The flexibility of the male students was significantly higher (46.0 ± 10.2 cm vs. 51.1 ± 10.8 cm, p<0.001) and the number of sit-ups performed by female students was significantly higher (20.1 ± 5.5 times vs. 22.3 ± 4.7 times, p<0.001). All subjects participated in a sports and physical fitness class at university, which may be the reason why their physical fitness levels were partly higher than those observed in the previous research.departmental bulletin pape
Significance of and problems with pet companions owned by elderly people in need of care (2) Narratives concerned with "loss" and "support"
P(論文)In this study, the relationship between pets and elderly people who need care was examined through a narrative approach. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with four elderly residents of Nobeoka City, Miyazaki, and with professionals who have the ability to support elderly people's caring for pets (i.e. a social worker, home-care workers, a pet sitter and administrative officers). The interviewer asked about the relationship between the elderly people and their pets, specifically about any benefits or difficulties in their daily life. The results of the interviews revealed that even those elderly people who had lost their pets linked their own life stories to their pets, structuring them according to their relationship with their pets. In contrast, the professionals often emphasized the difficulties for elderly people in caring for pets. The study suggests that we need to construct a social support network, in particular, a `narrative community' to listen attentively to elderly people's narratives as a way of supporting the relationship between the elderly and their pets.departmental bulletin pape
Consideration of Social Support and Dreams of Left-Behind Children in Chinese Agricultural Villages : Summary of Fieldwork of Two Years
P(論文)This paper examines and elucidates how the ambitions of left-behind children in poor agricultural villages can be fulfilled in Chinese society. The following chapter (Chapter 2) verifies important government documents and considers the effect of Chinese educational reforms on the self-actualization of left-behind children and children of migrant workers over the next decade. Chapter 3 examines the state of living and the "dreams" of left-behind children from the children's perspective on the basis of a survey conducted in an agricultural village in Hunan Province, which has been the focus of participant observation for two years. Chapter 4 introduces and considers the significance of the implementation of social care, which is based on the survey results of economically developed coastal cities. to help the children in these cities realize their dreams, as these are areas which host migrant workers and their children.departmental bulletin pape
Changes in sense of direction with aging : An examination using Sense of Direction Questionnaire-Short Form (SDQ-S)
P(論文)The main purpose of this study was to examine age-related differences in sense of direction using Sense of Direction Questionnaire-Short Form (SDQ-S; Takeuchi, 1992). SDQ-S consists of two factors, i.e. awareness of orientation (Factor I), and memory for usual spatial behavior (Factor II). The participants were 33 elderly adults aged from 67 - 87 years, and 32 undergraduate students aged 18 - 21 years. A questionnaire, administered to participants, included SDQ-S, self-rating of sense of direction. There were significant correlations between SDQ-S and self-rating of sense of direction. A t-test revealed that there were no significant differences between elderly adults and undergraduate students in SDQ-S, self-rating of sense of direction. Two-way (age, gender) ANOVA revealed that a main effect of gender was significant in Factor I, and all were not significant in Factor II. The results suggest that : 1) there are no age-related differences in sense of direction; 2) although it was not statistically significant, males have better awareness of orientation than females in elderly adults; 3) in a further study, it will be necessary to control various attributes in elderly adults.departmental bulletin pape
Making programs of the rapid intravenous injection of potassium preparations and anaphylactic shock for an emergency-care simulator system
We made simulation programs to enable the reproduction of drug misadministration / condition changes for an emergency-care simulator system. We employed a Stan® simulator equipped with a personal computer. In these programs, the general clinical condition can be detected by blinking velocity, cardiac / respiratory sounds, heart / respiratory rate, body temperature and arterial blood pressure. As an example of drug misadministration, the simulation programs facilitated the reproduction of symptoms related to the rapid intravenous injection of potassium preparations. With respect to changes in clinical condition, it facilitated the reproduction of anaphylactic shock. These programs can be downloaded via the Internet. Experience of excess-dose drug administration / condition changes reproduced by the emergency-care simulator system is useful for checking patients' vital signs, and eventually for evaluating the drug efficacy, and confirming adverse reactions to drugs. Application of these programs will help teach pharmacy students how to check for vital signs (pulse palpation, auscultation, blood pressure measurement, and electrocardiography) in a school setting, not a hospital setting. Mastering these techniques may also allow pharmacy students to determine the efficacy of drug and adverse reactions.departmental bulletin pape
