Actual status of individuals with disabilities targeted for wheelchair seating intervention
Wheelchair seating is a method of supporting individuals with disabilities that utilizes modular wheelchairs and seating posture-supporting devices to maintain a stable posture, facilitating the execution of functional movements while using a wheelchair. With the cooperation of 18 physical and occupational therapists, this study examined the actual status of 164 individuals with disabilities for whom seating intervention was being provided.
The results revealed an association between decreased ability to maintain a sitting posture in a wheelchair and lower Braden Scale scores, indicating an increased risk for pressure ulcers (r=‒0.756, p<0.001). Likewise, among individuals targeted for seating intervention, the ability to maintain a sitting posture was also significantly correlated with Functional Independence Measure scores. This assessment demonstrated that poorer seating ability was associated with a lower total score (r=‒0.778, p<0.001) as well as with eating (r=‒0.727, p<0.001) and wheelchair locomotion (r=‒0.666, p<0.001). These results suggest the requirement for active assessment of and intervention for individuals with disabilities targeted for seating intervention to prevent the development of pressure ulcers and to support their activities of daily living.

Relationship of mental rotation task with motor imagery vividness and working memory
P(論文)Objective : Numerous studies have reported the use of motor imagery as a rehabilitation tool for stroke patients. Here we investigated the relationship of a mental rotation task for assessment of motor imagery ability with motor imagery vividness and working memory. Methods : Twenty-one healthy subjects (13 women ; mean age, 20.43±0.99 years), all right-handed, were recruited. We measured reaction times and error rates during mental rotation tasks of the hand. We used the Movement Imagery Questionnaire-Revised Second Version (MIQ-RS) for assessment of kinesthetic and visual motor imagery vividness. In addition, we also used digit span visual tapping span and kinesthetic tapping span to assess working memory ability. Results : The reaction times for both right and left inverted hand stimuli (180°) were significantly longer than those for other stimuli. The error rates were also highest at 180°. The reaction time for left hand stimuli was significantly longer than that for right hand stimuli. There was a negative correlation between the visual tapping span score and reaction time. The visual tapping span score also showed a negative correlation with the error rate. Conclusions : Visual tapping span as a parameter of visual working memory may be sensitive to the ability of visual motor imagery.departmental bulletin pape
