The effects of shading parts of face on intensity ratings of facial expressions of emotion
P(論文)The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of shading parts of faces on the intensity ratings of
facial expressions of emotion. The participants were 72 undergraduate students whose age ranged from
18 to 31 years. The stimulus materials were photographs of faces showing six basic emotions (happiness,
sadness, surprise, disgust, anger, fear) and copies of photographs in which the upper or lower parts of
these faces were shaded. The models in the photographs were 6 Japanese men and 6 Japanese women.
The participants' task was to rate intensities for each photograph using a seven-point scale in terms of
the six basic emotions. Whole face (6.31) and lower parts (6.24) were rated significantly more intense than
the upper parts (5.11) in happiness photograph. Whole faces (5.67) were rated significantly more intense
than the upper parts (5.10), and the upper parts were rated significantly more intense than the lower
parts (4.51) in sadness photograph. Whole faces (6.19) were rated significantly more intense than the
upper parts (5.35) and lower parts (5.26) in surprise photograph. Whole faces (3.85) and the upper parts
(3.85) were rated significantly more intense than the lower parts (3.06) in disgust photograph. Whole faces
(6.20) were rated significantly more intense than the upper parts (5.79), and the upper parts were rated
significantly more intense than the lower parts (3.19) in anger photograph. The differences in rating
intensities were not significant among whole faces (4.03), the upper parts (4.04), and the lower parts (3.74)
in fear photograph. The results suggest that: 1) Happiness can be recognized by the lower parts; 2)
Sadness, surprise, and anger can be recognized by both the upper and lower parts; 3) Disgust and fear
can’t be recognized even if whole faces were shown.departmental bulletin pape
Study on the learning support program for junior high school students raised in a single parent household and the way of educational administration : Through a review of the K university Project in N-city
P(論文)One of the major social problems in Japan is children living in poverty, especially among those raised
in a single parent household. These households usually cannot provide additional education support or
well-balanced meals according to the children’s needs.
In late 2015, K university initiated the “Learning support for junior high school children from single
parent households” program (also known as the “J-Project”). The aim of the J-project is to improve
children’s learning capabilities and provide well balanced meals with cooking lessons. The initiative was
financially supported by N-city local government.
We analyzed the J-project based on the completion report submitted to N-city and found positive
outcomes as follows: ① most students have been able to concentrate on their studies more; ② all six
students of the third grade of junior high schools have joined high schools of their choice. However, we
also found some problems in implementing this project. The most serious was insufficient coordination
between the Welfare Sections and the Board of Education in the same municipality. We suggest that the
head of the municipality should show strong leadership in coordinating with all concerned sections,
especially the Board of Education, so that many children can be freed from the cycle of poverty through
this learning support program.departmental bulletin pape
