Exploring the sociolinguistic profile of Tima in the Nuba Mountains of Sudan
Exploring the sociolinguistic profile of Tima in
the Nuba Mountains of SudanThis paper discusses some of the defining features of the sociolinguistic
situation of Tima in the Nuba
Mountains situated within the larger national
cultural order of Sudan.
It attempts to answer two key questions: What is the
nature of the verbal repertoires of the individuals in the community?
Whether, and how, does Tima speech play a role in the producti
on of an
imagined sense of solidarity against the monoglot
standard ideology
of the
State.
The socioeconomically supported nationalist
regime
of language has
significantly led to differentially distributed and valued sociolinguistic
repertoires. We argue,
however, that it has paradoxically resulted in the
increasing ‘maintenance’ of the long subjugated linguistic practices in many
parts of the Sudan, including the Tima of the Nuba Mountains.
The sources
of the data for the study are a linguistic survey tria
ngulated with
ethnographic observation and historical documentation of metapragmatic
activities in Tima and Khartoum.
The paper is structured into four parts:
the
first part is an introduction,
the
second
part reviews
the conceptual
framework
.
The
third pa
rt presents the findings of the linguistic survey
, and
it
engages in a detailed discussion of the
ongoing
role of a translocal
language planning body (Tima Language Committee) in the ideological
enregistration of Tima speech with a new sociolinguistic prof
ile.

Micropiles for Structural Support
Micropiles for Structural SupportABSTRACT: This technical paper discusses the Micropiles brief history, Micropiles
Classification, Drilling Techniques, Grouting, Reinforcement, Design Concept, Testing
procedures and Guidelines of Micropiles. The paper provides a simplified step-by-step
design approach. These include geotechnical strength limit states, other structural
considerations, service limit states, corrosion protection and Micropiles testing
procedures
Capacities of Micropiles Cast in with Pressure
Capacities of Micropiles Cast in with
PressureThe use of Micropiles started in early 1950s in Italy for under pinning application of historic
building damaged during war II, Micropiles technology is a reliable pile system that can with
stand large capacity axial or lateral loads with minimal disturbance to the existing structures, they
become very popular due to their ability to transfer loads efficiently through skin friction and due
to their many installation advantage over conventional pile systems. A typical construction
sequence is shown in Figure 1.Micropiles are small diameter piles that can be installed in almost
any type of ground where piles are required with design loads as small as three tons and has high
as 500 tons
The relation of Micropile Diameters in case of Pressure casting and non-Pressure casting
The relation of Micropile Diameters in case of Pressure
casting and non-Pressure castingABSTRACT: The aim of this paper is to discuss the effect of pressure casting to Micropile on
the strength of Micropile and to compare it with the normal way of casting (casting with gravity).
With inference of finding a diameter equivalent to the Micropile casting with non-pressure gives
the same strength to Micropile that casting with pressure. Preliminary studies have been made in
Sudan in specific area, then an experimental works done for a number of Micropiles with
different diameters and different techniques of placing concrete with various amount of pressure
to find the relationship between diameters in the two cases (casting with pressure, casting with
non pressure) these relation were presented graphically. It was concluded that the Micropile
casting with pressure gives strength equivalent to Micropile with larger diameter that casting
with non-pressure
Estimation of micropile capacity grouted under pressure
Micropile, Finite Element, Grouting, Failure Load, Cohesive SoilAbstract
The aim of this paper is to study the behavior of micropile type B where neat cement grout is placed into the hole under
pressure. Numerical analysis is used to simulate this behavior. The model was verified against field test data performed on
Khartoum soil. These models are introduced briefly, and then used to investigate the effect of pressure grouting on
micropile. For micropiles of diameter less than 25cm a considerable increase in their capacities was deduced due to
increase in pressure. For any diameter larger than 30cm it is expected that, the pressure will have no effect on increasing
the pile diameter and thus the capacity of pile. This why micropiles diameter are assumed ≤ 30cm. Though the factor (f) for
micropiles with diameters greater than 10cm and less than 20cm can be estimated using certain equation developed in this
study. The results of the developed model are in good agreement with the experimental results
